Harry Reid on Team USA’s Chinese-Made Olympic Uniforms: ‘Put Them in a Big Pile & Burn Them’

Ralph Lauren Olympics Made in China

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Thursday he believes Team USA's Chinese-made opening ceremony uniforms should be burned. (AP)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is so disgusted that the U.S. Olympic athletes will be wearing uniforms made in China that he thinks the outfits should be burned.

“I am so upset,” the Nevada Democrat told reporters Thursday. “I think the Olympic Committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms and put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again.”

He added, “If they have to wear nothing but a singlet with ‘USA’ on it painted by hand, that’s what they should wear.”

ABC News reported Wednesday that no part of the Ralph Lauren-designed opening ceremony uniform was made in America.

“We have people in America, in the textile industry, who are desperate for jobs,” Reid said. “What the Olympic Committee did is absolutely wrong.”

Asked why the athletes’ uniforms were not manufactured in the states, the U.S. Olympic Committee told ABC: “The U.S. Olympic team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors. We’re proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company.”

Bradley Scott, a New York fashion designer, told The Blaze in an email he found the “Made in China” labels “simply embarrassing.”

“Besides the trade imbalance that exists, we consistently accuse China of slave labor, an underage workforce, forced abortions, imprisonment, manipulation of currency, state controlled media and livelihood,” Scott wrote. “Yet, we contract them to make the uniforms to clothe athletes that represent our country which stands for everything the Chinese do not.”

He pointed to first lady Michelle Obama’s past championing of young American designers, and said those who contribute to the president’s re-election campaign “should be livid they were not asked to do this.”

“Are they only good for dressing the first lady when she wants to make a statement?” Scott said.

Lauren’s Team USA opening ceremony uniforms are similar to the ones he designed for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, which also featured blazers and berets.

From ABC, here’s a breakdown of how much each item is retailing for online:

Men:
Beret – $55
Tie – $125
Belt – $85
Shirt – $425
Blazer – $795
Trousers – $295
Shoes – $165

Women:
Beret – $55
Scarf – $58
Belt – $85
Shirt – $179
Skirt – $498
Blazer – $598

The Olympic Committee only has so much money for uniforms. Ralph Lauren was cramed down their throats by Jo Biden(Good Friend). These same uniforms made here in the USA would be 3 times as much. Ralph Lauren’s name on them is what is costing so much money. If you supplied Fruit of the Loom underwear with Lauren’s tag on it it would be at least $45.00 bucks each.

Will this be Comrade Obama’s civilian army uniform during his second term? What happened to the brown shirts MO loved so much?

The rumor is that China is running short on the brown dye needed to make the millions of uniforms ordered by MO. Therefore, it will have to be blue, if the uniforms are to be ready by January 2013. The reports are that MO cried.

It has nothing to do with the clothes being made in China. Reid could care less.

This has everything to do with Romney having a past history with the Olympics and that’s it.

When Reid criticizes the Olympics he is criticizing Romney. Just wait, they will make the connection very soon.

The uniforms look like what the Communist, “killing machine” murderer that the Left (of course that includes Hollywood) loves……. Che Guevara wore, especially the beret. Che…the one the Obama poster was modeled after, of course. The one that Jane Fonda (the traitor who sat on the Communist North Vietnamese anti-aircraft guns and conspired against our soldiers…the guns that shot our guys out of the sky…she bashed our Prisoners of War to the media and caused them to be beaten and tortured more)…the one that Jane Fonda admired so much she said she wished she had had sex with him, Che Guevera was known as the “killing machine” because he killed people to help Communist Dictator, Tyrant, Fidel Castro into power. Che is the one that Rachel Ray wore on her purse…the one that Cameron Diaz wore and a bunch of Hollywood “stars” wear and that Obama campaign HQ had his picture on the wall and Obama followers love Communist, anti-freedom, anti-art, child rapist, murderer Che Guevara. Why did anybody vote for Obama again??? Thanks a lot you idiots who did.

And check out the prices. So much for the customer benefiting from the cheap labor. Which of course is the real dirty little secret with many of the BRAND named products that have been outsourced to China. The cost goes down significantly more than the retail price. And management gets big bonuses for reducing costs and increasing profits while hurting the US economy. Rule of thumb for brand name products is take the retail price and divide it by 4. That’s the cost. Company makes 100% on costs, retailer makes 100% on the way through. Online prices are lower to account for shipping. Most of the great American companies have become nothing more than marketing and distribution companies.

Reid is an idiot – OF COURSE it is shocking and disgusting that our athletes are wearing uniforms made in the sweatshops of our communist ENEMY, China, BUT – democrats’ pro-union, anti-business policies over many decades are to blame for the fact that the U.S. textiles industry and, more broadly, the entire manufacturing sector have been eviscerated and all the jobs have gone overseas. AND – Reid helped create/supports obama’s disastrous policies over the past 3 1/2 years which have destroyed millions of jobs. It is completely ridiculous that ANY democrat would whine about American jobs when they have worked so hard to purposely put Americans out of work, and enslave them on the government plantation – sounds like MORE FAKE OUTRAGE from Reid. What a POS.

I agree with your assessment. I worked for a very popular jeans manufacturer (ones with a ‘W’ on the back pocket) and you can not buy a pair of these that are made here in the states. I also worked for serveral textile related companies over the years and every one has moved out of the US. That is due to our policies that favor the economics of manufacturing elsewhere.
