Harry Reid: ‘Seniors Love to Get Junk Mail…Only Way of Communicating or Feeling Like They‘re a Part of the Real World’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday claimed senior citizens “love” junk mail and cited them as a reason to pass a United States Postal Service reform bill.
“Elderly Americans rely on the United States Postal Service,” Reid said in a Senate floor speech. “I’ll come home tonight here to my home in Washington and there’ll be some mail there. A lot of it is what some people refer to as junk mail, but for the people that are sending that mail, it’s very important.”
He continued, “And when talking about seniors, seniors love to get junk mail. It’s sometimes their only way of communicating or feeling like they’re part of the real world.”
The cash-strapped agency in February announced a plan to cut about 260 mail processing centers as part of a cost-cutting move.
“Unless we act quickly, thousands of post offices – as I indicated, there are more than 30,000 in America, many of them rural – will close. I’ve said this earlier today, I repeat it: These rural post offices [are] the only way that people have who are in those small communities to communicate with the outside world. Maybe some medicine they’re getting, maybe keep in touch with their family. It’s their way of keeping in touch with the world.”
According to The Hill, Reid said the Senate would vote on a motion to proceed on the measure Thursday.

So Harry my friend I’m pretty sure that Seniors and most everybody else does not want any more junk mail. And to CATB as a reident of Elko NV where the “National Cowboy Poetry Gathering” takes place every January I can assure that we are not pleased with Harry Ried for dragging us into his demented world. The Cowboy Poetry Gathering is not a bunch of wanabes spouting off “Oh Home On The Range” on the taxpayers dime. The Gathering is a week long celebration of the “Western Way of Life” through Music , Poetry, Film and a multitude of Hands on Workshops that help keep the Western Way of Life ( like family, hard work, love of your country, religious freedom you know, that kind of stuff) alive and brings in a huge boost to the local economy at a very slow time of the year. Please remember that We didn’t all vote for Harry Ried, but here in the rural areas of Nevada our votes are over shadowed by those in the more populated areas like Vegas and Reno so please know that Harry Doesn’t speay for all of us.

Last week went into local library and looked around and of 16 computers – 13 were in use and 11 of those were seniors. Now as to junk mail I open and if it has a postage paid envelope in it I stuff their junk back into the envelope and mail back to them. The rest goes into the trash. What makes me mad is about a year ago I got a letter from a church in Chicago wanting me to send $5.00 to them and the Rev. would send me 6 Lotto numbers that were blessed and sure to win.. His cost was Bulk rate $.11 while I was paying $.42. I’m sure he made a bundle and retired. If you charge all the same the PO will survive. It worked back in Ben Franklin’s day.

I get advertisement daily from Citi Cards and when I tried to unsubscribe to it, they wanted my Social Security number and I told them where they could stick it. Along with a few others like AARP, Mutual of Omaha are weekly and such a waste. I’m sure it is all comig back to bit us taxpayers in the butt.

Most of it wants me to buy life insurance or supplemental insurance for Medicare (I’m retired military and have tri care for life). They want me to borrow money or take a reverse mortgage. Lately they want me to donate to political campaigns (I tell them I can’t because I spend so much money on gasoline so I can get to the Drs.)

Junk mail is junk mail. Most of it is directed at seniors that live either alone or with an elderly spouse. They are normal trusting people who have never cheated or dishonestly taken money for something that was not going to benefit that person. Junk mail should be sent at the same rate as my mail. It is advertizement just the same as the million dollar commercials on the football supper bowl. The same goes for junk E-Mail, I pay for the service and I want to use my E-Mail for my own personal use. Spammers are a nuisance. I also want the wasted paper used by the junk mailers to cost them more. My trash pickup is costing me instead of the junk mailers and that’s not right.

Since the Founders didn’t know from texting and e-mail, their original intent clearly was that actual paper letters and actual packages should be conveyed by some government agency. Of course, what the Constitution does not say is precisely how many post offices Congress should establish–perhaps none, perhaps millions. Perhaps one in each state capital?

Matter of fact – I take the crap they mail me and stick it back into the postage paid envelope and send it back to them at their expense – they just had to pay double postage! GET A LIFE!

The post office should have never developed into the huge bureaucracy it is! they want to keep communications government controlled vs private carriers (which do cost too much for seniors) but all these public jobs…have in their contracts the unions must buy the government bonds they are about to issue, with pension money…things just get better and better!

But since the government fails to do its job, companies like UPS and FedEx have come to fill the gap. They will continue to fill the gaps the government leaves behind. Although the government will surely leave a heavy bill for the American people.
