Has Former Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro ‘Rediscovered Jesus?’

Cuba’s ailing former leader Fidel Castro, 85, is certainly no friend of the United States. But new reports have some wondering if the former president is now looking to become a comrade of…Jesus Christ. According to media reports, Castro’s daughter, Alina Fernandez, is claiming that her father has become more friendly to religion as his life is nearing a close.
Now, it is important to note that Fernandez is estranged from her father, so it’s unclear just how much inside information she has regarding his faith views. See, Fernandez was born to one of Castro’s mistresses who fled to Spain with her daughter back in 1993 (Fernandez is now based in Miami). That being said, her words are still worth noting, especially considering news that has purportedly leaked from a Vatican source.
“He has rediscovered Jesus at the end of his life,” Fernandez was quoted as saying in La Repubblica, a popular Italian newspaper. The complete translation of her comments, as reported by ABC News, is as follows:
“During this last period, Fidel has come closer to religion: he has rediscovered Jesus at the end of his life. It doesn’t surprise me because dad was raised by Jesuits.”
This same article goes on the quote an unnamed, high-ranking Vatican official as well — an individual who is helping organize Pope Benedict XVI’s upcoming trip to Cuba.
“Fidel is at the end of his strength. Nearly at the end of his life. His exhortations in the party paper Granma, are increasingly less frequent,” the unnamed source said. “We know that in this last period he has come closer to religion and God.”
This is causing some to wonder if the former leader will be seeking out forgiveness and a clean slate with the Pople next month. The Associated Press has more regarding Pope Benedict’s impending trip to Cuba:
The Roman Catholic Church in Cuba has announced the dates and a partial itinerary for Pope Benedict XVI’s much-anticipated visit to the island, the first by a pontiff since John Paul II’s groundbreaking 1998 tour.
The church said in a statement Sunday that the pontiff will be in Cuba from March 26 to 28, following a visit to Mexico.
This trip is noteworthy for a number of reasons. To begin, Castro has a complicated history with the Catholic Church. He was excommunicated in 1962 and, considering his treatment of citizens and his nation’s isolation, he hasn’t always had the most favorable interactions with Christian leadership. However, since his brother, Raul, has taken over, conditions seem to be improving. NPR reports:
The origins of Pope Benedict’s upcoming trip to Cuba can partly be traced back to events at the church in the spring of 2010. At that time, government-organized mobs attacked the women outside the church as foreign television cameras rolled.
Cuba’s church leaders intervened, and in the dialogue with Raul Castro that followed, more than 100 jailed dissidents were freed. [...]
Under Raul Castro, Cuba‘s Catholic Church has recovered a degree of prominence it hasn’t had in 50 years. Castro said the island will welcome the pope with affection and respect, announcing he would pardon nearly 3,000 more prisoners in advance of the papal visit.
“This is a demonstration of the strength and generosity of the Cuban Revolution,” Castro said in a Dec. 23 speech to Cuba’s parliament.
All things considered, it is quite possible that the former dictator (Fidel) has renounced his past behaviors and is prepared to ask the Pope for forgiveness, while seeking to re-join his long-lost faith tradition.

JohnnyMidknight
Posted on February 10, 2012 at 2:28pmThere is the progressive talking point of the day. If you are against gay marriage, you simply hate them.
@ ShyLow
Actually, Santorum has stated at length that he supports equal treatment of gay and lesbians. However, his religion teaches that marriage is a religious institution and between a woman and a man in the eyes of God. After all, their union is before God.
Marriage is a religious institution, and a sacrament. The Government does not marry’ however, they can from civil unions and domestic partnerships. The error that you progressives make is calling it marriage, which would suggest that churches would need to conduct these marriages (which is against their dogma). Nor is the Government in the business of forming religious doctrine (as that is what the separation of church and state is really about).
Santorum has stated he would love and accept his son if he was gay. In fact, most conservatives would accept gays and lesbians that base their faith in the love of God (especially Jesus Christ). Some evangelicals may not, but that is a small faction of a large populace. So, to label each conservative as a hater would be equal to me calling you a pinko commie (and please read up on the term to know it is an oxymoron).

You *do* realize that even Hitler could have been forgiven by God. Whether he was or not is beyond me, you, or any of us, but God would have accepted his repentance and “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed (his) transgressions from (him).” ~Psalm 103:12.
Maybe Fidel won’t be there. If he sincerely repents, you never know. We may run into him on the other side but by that point none of us will likely even remember sins that he (or any of us, for that matter) committed, simply because of Psalm 103:12.
It’s a nice thought, but who knows for sure?

Hitler was murdering Jews by ethnic reason. Commies were murdering their victims by class- and other reasons.
But was it more pleasant to people to be murdered by a non-ethnic reason than by ethnic one?

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 9:43amOur holy and loving God, when Fidel Castro sins, give him the grace to repent quickly (2 Tim. 2:24-26). May he confess his sins, commit to walking in holiness, and forsake that particular sin. Father, may he not merely feel guilty, but sorrowful enough to turn from his sin (2 Cor 7:9-10), and bear fruit that proves their repentance (Matt. 3:8, see NET Bible; cf. Rev. 2:1-7).
Lord, I pray that Fidel Castro would know the joy of having a clear conscience (1 Tim. 1:18-19; 2 Tim. 1:3), and that by keeping short accounts with You, he would be protected from a corrupt (Titus 1:15) and seared conscience (1 Tim. 4:2).
Father, I thank You again for the promise that when we confess our sins, You are faithful to forgive us (1 John 1:9). Lord, Your Word says: This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:5-7).
Heavenly Father, may Fidel Castro repent like David in Psalm 32 and Psalm 51, humbly and truly seeking Your mercy and grace when he disobey You, experiencing Your washing and cleansing of their souls. May he ask You to create in him a clean heart to empower him to change, and may he know the joy and blessings of Your forgiv

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 12:14pmWell, as others have said, if he indeed sincerely repents (also see Acts 2:38 what they were told to do to be saved) — then great for him. I know to us, that doesn’t seem “right” considering all the horrible harm & destruction he has caused in his life – however, it reminds me of when people criticize Christianity and say how unfair it is that so many bad things happen to “good”, “innocent” people, etc.
Report Post »But you don’t hear how “unfair” it seems for good things to happen to “bad” people & mention how a lifelong “bad person” (especially like Hitler or murderers, etc.) are able to truly repent at the end of their lives and go to heaven for eternity also. Yet that’s the “good news” of the gospel and a mystery to all of us. It shows we don’t understand it all and never will simply b/c we are not God and must believe and trust what His Word, the Bible tells us for a lot of mysteries in life. And yes, you can prove the Bible to be true beyond reasonable doubt when researched with an honest heart. Many sites out there with that info.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 8:10amNon believers have no idea how hard it is to be a Christian. Many parts are difficult, forgiveness, understanding, acceptence, trust, accountability,to be nonjudgementle, and being humble. We all battle within ourselves at times. There are allot of temptations that we face every day. Not to mention being ridiculed and harassed. for our faith. A couple of things stand out for me, like why some people have to suffer and why some just die in their sleep? Why a murderer can go to heaven if he accepts Jesus and a non believer that has never harmed anyone will not? It is hard for me to pray for my enemies sometimes. Or why some have horrible lives inpoverty and are good people and evil people live in luxury? None of us are perfect and without sin. Why some are taken at a young age and others have longjevity? Why anyone has to endure extreme fear before they die? There are many things we are not meant to understand. There are many ways people interpret the Bible. It is often confusing at least it has been for me. Until I turned it over to God and put my life in his hands. I am not going to lie, bad things pop into my head at times and I wonder where it even came from. The difference now is that I am aware of it and seek forgiveness immidiately and ask for the strength and wisdom to combat it. Rather than ignore it like I used to. Life is a journey. If we learn from our mistakes they are lessons. Our time here is a passage either to Heaven or Hell, the choice is ours alone.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 2:00pmPAMELA KAY, you are so right. And, as Christians, we have the peace of knowing that we can trust the Lord with all of this, and the peace of knowing that it is through our weaknesses that Christ is made strong in our lives. We won’t know all of these answers here and now, but how great it is to have the confidence in Jesus Christ, who embraces our souls. Because of His love, we can release these fears, bad thoughts, mistakes and trust Him with all that afflicts us. That confidence, here and now, will carry us on our journey in this valley of the shadow of Death. He brings life to us here, along with the promise and glimpse of an eternity with Him, with no more tears.

It is hard for us to imagine that Castro or Jane Fonda could be found worthy in God’s eyes, but it is possible. It is a good example, with regard to our temporal existance and God’s eternal existance, of why we cannot understand many things such as war, a child’s death, etc. This is a good time for us to reflect on the fact that we are small and we are not the center of the Universe.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 3:13pmIt may be difficult at times…but, if one really accepts the ‘message’ of Christ, or the existance of God ….and that man’s earthly life is a gift of experience and learning…, it isn’t hard at all.
“Father forgive them for they know not what they do”; as alleged to have been spoken by Jesus Christ, is synonomous (so to speak) with The Lord’s Prayer:
Our father, in heaven;
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On Earth, as in Heaven,
Give us today our daily bread,
And forgive us our sins,
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, power and glory are yours
Now and forever, Amen.
Similarly, “It’s never too late“ and ”Anything is possible” applies.
>However, there are those who cannot earnestly give without expecting a reward.

Notice the comma after today and also paradise not heaven. Jesus had not ascended into heaven until 40 days after his ressurection. He is saying I’m telling you on this day not you will be in heaven today. He will be ressurected on the last day at the end of this system of things.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 1:11pm@greenwood,
I don’t quite follow you:
Luke 23:40-43 (NLT)
But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you are dying? [41] We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” [42] Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
[43] And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
As this man was about to die, he turned to Christ for forgiveness, and Christ accepted him. This shows that our deeds don’t save us—our faith in Christ does. It is never too late to turn to God. Even in his misery, Jesus had mercy on this criminal who decided to believe in him. Our lives will be much more useful and fulfilling if we turn to God early, but even those who repent at the very last moment will be with God in paradise.
23:42-43 The dying criminal had more faith than the rest of Jesus’ followers put together. Although the disciples continued to love Jesus, their hopes for the kingdom were shattered. Most of them had gone into hiding. As one of his followers sadly said two days later, “We had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21). By contrast, the criminal looked at the man who was dying next to him and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” By all appearances, the kingdom was finished. How awe-inspiring is the faith of this man who alone saw beyond the present shame to the coming glory!

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:45amHe is the man that we all love to hate except, of course, Mr. Moore.
Report Post »If he has an epiphany, and realizes he was wrong and re-embraces God, then we should, at the least, be happy he has. That said, he has a tremendous amount of atonement to do when he leaves the mortal world.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:55amNo, he wouldn’t have to atone – Jesus paid for all our sins, including Castro’s. No one could pay the debt we owed – except Jesus. If it is true I would expect to see some fruit, but only God knows the true condition of his heart.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 12:02pmWe’ll know his conversion is for real when we see hollywood celebraties turn their backs on Castro and bad mouthing him. Of course it doesn’t really matter what we think, only God knows his heart.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:38amI think the Jesus castro discovered was his landscaper, Jesus Gonzales….not Jesus Christ.
Report Post »Castro has a special room reserved for him in hell and I don’t thing the cancellation policy on his room allows for any changes.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 9:26pmDo you really think all Cubans are landscapers? This “Jesus Gonzales” you are conjuring up could have been his jeweler or a comrade. Landscapers can have profitable businesses too, but it’s curious the association you are making.
Report Post »Do you think that it’s Jesus the one who makes the reservations down there, or do we? Jesus takes us out of darkness.
