Has Godlessness Truly ‘Doomed’ Great Britain?

It’s no secret that Europe has been shedding its religious identity for some time now. As time progresses, some leaders in religious circles have publicly pondered the impact this decline could have on various societies. Among those concerned is Rabbi Shmuley Boteach. In a recent piece for the Jerusalem Post entitled, “Godlessness Has Doomed Britain,” Boteach describes the negative impact that this movement away from faith and religion has had on Great Britain. He writes:
Britain today has become one of the most godless societies on Earth. Its principle ‘religious’ exports today are thinkers who despise religion. From Richard Dawkins, who has compared religion to child abuse, to my friend Christopher Hitchens, who titled his 2007 book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, the British have cornered the market on being anti-God – at least the Christian and Jewish varieties.
Boteach goes on to compare the disparities between the United States and England when it comes to stated belief. While 92 percent of Americans believe in God, only 35 percent of the British do. Startingly, 43 percent of Britons claim that they have no religion at all. A simple look at the percentage of individuals associated with the Church of England perfectly illustrates and corroborates the decline — a drop from 40 percent in 1983 to 23 percent in 2009.
But, what’s so different about America? Why do people here believe more readily in a higher power? Boteach writes that, “Religion lives and dies in America like a commercial enterprise, and is therefore highly entrepreneurial.” With no official state religion, there’s no one, on a national scale, defending the faith per se. So, in essence, there is a freedom to worship at will.
Boteach goes on to claim that Europeans often laugh at American evangelicals, while praising the decline of religion as a sophisticated move in the right direction. This, he claims, is not the proper way to view the issue. Instead, he laments Britain’s decline in faith:
This decline of faith and optimism may account for why Britain – once the most advanced nation on earth, which gave the world parliamentary democracy and inimitable centers of higher learning – is today more famous for exporting reality shows like Big Brotherand Project Catwalk.
For while religion affirms the infinite dignity of the human person, its absence robs life of its sanctity. Universal exploitation and humiliation for fame and fortune are the inevitable outgrowth.
Certainly, America — like Britain — has many social and political problems. But, Boteach contends that the “spiritual underpinnings of the American republic” ensure that citizens continue to debate, soul-search and engage in national discourse. He contends that England should rediscover its own faith so that the nation can find its “sense of purpose” once more.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 9:46amActually, the British has embraced socialism for some time now.. along with much of Europe. America is the last hold out and we are sliding down that road rather rapidly with our Marxist president who happens to be of color. Would we have embraced a Marxist president surrounded by radicals and terrorists if he had been white or Jewish? Possibly not. It only proves people see what they want to see–not the truth. Any journalist with half a brain and no ax to grind, could easily have discovered how deeply rooted our president is with Marxism and dedicated to social justice as long as he can assign it without living UNDER it. However, with the ACLU and the recent trends to eliminate GOD from the public sphere, along with Muslim populations expanding, we are going the way of the UK and Europe. However, if one is sane, you have to ask why would we do that now that we can SEE the disaster that awaits us? Socialism doesn’t work; it never has. I believe the removal of GOD and the shifting away from personal responsibility will be the downfall of America.

What pleases us (what we think pleases us) may not be pleasing to the God who created us for better things. Not condemning: been there, done most. Posted on July 6, 2011 at 9:39am“….Europeans often laugh at American evangelicals” Sam Kineson mocked them and I had a good laugh with him. Is it any wonder why so many Americans began to question God, the Church, their roll in the family when the parents were not doing their job in telling their own children where they fit into the family structure, society or community? Jobs were no longer available in the home towns so children were moving away from the family structure and no one seemed to mind or find this odd. Everything slowly broke up. Evangelicals were yelling at us about God and Jesus telling us how awful we were, the Catholics were doing naughty things to boys and couldn’t be trusted, social justice, well we all know about that now….the list goes on about how ‘the Churchs/religion’ fails, but God does not. God resides within. It is man who has fallen asleep, once again allowing another to lead the way because of ? (you fill in your own excuse). AWAKE once again and allow God to lead our lives and we follow.
America is the gift given to all of us and we have done a good job of trashing her. Do you really want to go on thinking and believing it can’t be taken away? It is being taken away. Bit by bit, inch by inch. Under the guise of a project called Agenda 21. Nafta is another and Rick Perry should start talking about this one for he has some ties to it too. These are as dangerous as the Muslim Brotherhood, ISNA (the front organization for the MB).

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 9:49amHere is where the problem lies, religion. Religion tends to be corrupted by individual theologies and traditions that have nothing to do with God or His Word, the Bible. The largest religions of so called Christianity have gone way off the tracks and have become large cults that are far from the message of the Gospel of Jesus that leads people to Jesus.
I am not a christian because the term christian has been tainted just as the rainbow has been tainted by the perverted people that use it for their symbol now. That is how Satan works, now that shows you the whole of the democratic party as well.
I am not a religious person but I am a devout reader, studier and follower of the Scriptures.
I am a disciple of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, a follower, one that has submitted ones self under the discipline and direction of Him.

Interesting that this article would criticize the exploitation of people in reality television and praise exploitation in the “commercial” religion of the United States. Besides, last time I checked all those Jersey Shore cast members wore plenty of crosses and proudly declared their Italian Catholic heritage. It seems their “divine sense of purpose” led them to trashy reality television as quickly as Christopher Hitchens led Great Britain to Big Brother.
I imagine Northern Ireland could do with a little more godlessness considering the recent religious violence there.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 9:20amIt would seem that England has forgotten “her precedence of teaching nations how to live”.
I don’t know about “doomed”. The problem is not so much godlessness as it is collectivistic godlessness—the elevation of society over the individual crushes him, and erodes the very bedrock of Anglo-Saxon, and, indeed, Western, civilization much more so than lack of belief. However, lack of belief in a Supreme Being Who has created Man (not men) in His Image, and endowed him with inalienable rights and, above all, creative power can (though need not—e.g., Ayn Rand) lead to the very collectivistic outlook that so undermines the individualism that is the very foundation of Western culture.
But, don’t count the Brits out just yet. I think they’ll wake eventually; they’ve just been under the “progressive” anesthesia a little longer than we have.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 9:55amAll lthe more reason to consider the grave possibility that we are in the End Times. And before someone flames me for being a “The World is Coming to an End!” messenger, I am NOT claiming that the end is tomorrow. But anyone who has read the Bible will concur that all of the signs are here. Christians are being persecuted, the U.S. is becoming a Godless nation – look at those who call themselves ‘Christian’ and are not (let’s start with Jeremiah Wright and Jim Wallis). The Christian faith is being infiltrated by false prophets. The trend is to throw God out of everything – out of the Pledge, out of cemeteries, out of speeches, out of sight. And the refusal to admit, in the overwhelming proof of our Founder’s history, that GOd is and always has been part of our country, is the slippery slope toward disaster.
The United States of America is the last bastion of freedom in an ever-shrinking world. It’s oppressors are calling for it to become just another socialist sibling in the world family. And when the end comes for us, it will be the end for everyone. There will be no one left to speak up for freedom and faith.
And THAT will bring about the beginning of the end. It might take a hundred years, or it might happen in 5. But the history of my faith, the Bible, is showing all the signs of it coming sooner than later. It also says, though, that only the Father knows the time, and I will not second-guess the Lord. I’ll just keep believing that whatever happens will be

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 1:02pmMany people use that scripture, but only the Jews are called by his name (Jew), or Israel. People should really read the bible through Jewish eyes, because it is a book written for Israel and the Jews. You should really stop thinking Jesus started the Catholic Church and replaced the Jews with Gentiles. How insane people can be, when God made a covenant with the children of Abraham and promised them the land over 300 times in the bible. He even raised his hand for this covenant, and to raise the hand is to swear by his word. I really wish many more people in America would ask God for revelation to what the scriptures really mean, and to start looking at their Hebrew roots and not false Christianity lies. We were grafted in to him, he was never grafted into us. And as far I can tell the heavens and earth have not passed away yet. So his Torah (law) should be our guide. Somethings do not apply today because there is no temple and there is no Bet Deim (Jewish court) to enforce all of the commandments such as slavery, adultery, etc. But an eye for an eye always has a place, that is equal compensation for mis deeds, not plucking out eyes or cutting off hands. Find a messianice congregation and listen to learn what you have been misguided about. Try El Shaddai Ministries. us for one. You will learn to love the Torah (word) as David Did.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 3:30pmReligion: A system of beliefs held by a person or group
Just have to say this, but being religious does not necessarily constitute a belief in God. Religion is whatever you believe whether it be in some god or gods, or whether it be atheism.
Anyway, just had to say that…lol. But I do agree with the article here. England and much of Europe is pretty much screwed if less and less people believe in God. Belief in god(s) (real or not) helps to form and create morals. Without belief in a sumpreme being, we would have no reason to be moral. Thankfully, most Americans still be in God, and hopefully we will start trusting in Him and listening to His word more. B
Another good point made is that England has a state sponsered religion and we don’t. When the state is defending a religion, it normally does not help the cause of that religion because now people are kinds forced into that religion and not necessarily voluntarily joining it.

Interestingly, I found that I had more in common with the Muslims in England/here (1 in 8 people in London are Muslim) as they agreed that Jesus was special and that there is only one God – in contrast, the people who acted surprised were the native Britons who couldn’t believe my faith in the God of the Bible because we Americans were to be a “progressive nation”. Consistently, while we engaged people on the street or door-to-door, once native Britons knew our beliefs – they would simply mock us openly.
I pray for the UK and Europe as a whole, as the Reformation sprung from there and sent missionaries everywhere – spreading the Good News. The big and beautiful church we stayed at (large estate worth $7 million) had only 19 parishioners (mostly very young and very old) as we learned that the older generations simply did not pass down the faith to the next generation well (JUDGES 2:10-15). How sad it is to see such another devastating plague strike Europe but with eternal consequences.
Here’s a well-put blog post on the decline of Europe of which he footnotes his sources – http://discipleshipjournal-buddy.blogspot.com/2010/08/decline-of-european-christianity.html

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 6:01pmAre you kidding me??
England has never been like America, ever. It was over freedom of religion that British citizens left their former homeland to come to the New World.
How can you even post that?
Americans and the British used to be Christian nations, but obviously things have changed. The facts Boteach used are facts that underscore our differences once again. We are still different in our beliefs, that does not take away from our common heritage.

Report Post »Its the Muslim invasion of the Isle that is dooming the UK.
Native british citizens are being out out-bred (native being those that accept the british form of government, and believe in the english way) by theocratic muslims that look at the UK as just another part of their caliphate.
The only factor involving athiesm is, they trust noboy of a faith….hang together or we will surely hang apart….

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 10:55amFor those who believe in the Bible and that we are nearing the “time of the end”, this should not come as a surprise.
II Th 2:1-3
1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
(KJV)
The falling away is well underway. All that is left is for the anti-Christ to be revealled… and no, it isn’t Prince whats-his-name.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 4:17pmAtheism,Christianity,Muslim,,,,,,you name it,,,which ever chooses to use Socialism destroys their Country,,not Atheism! I am an Atheist but I believe in small Government, low taxes, the right to bear arms and the freedom to believe what you want, even if that means a God,knock yourself out,,and most of all human dignity! That is not owned by the Religious in any way,,,,ask the Salem, Mass. citizens burned as witches if their human dignity was up held or slaughtered by the Religious? Don’t blame Atheism for Rotten Governments and Dark ages,,blame what ever ideology embraces Socialism or the enslavement of man!
