Hasidic NY Community Divided Over…Tank Tops for Women

Hasidic NY Community Divided Over...Tank Tops for Women

The Brooklyn Paper:

Williamsburg has a new voice for women’s fashion — Hasidic rabbis.

A spate of Yiddish posters calling on Orthodox Jewish women to avoid wearing “tank tops,” T-shirts and “clingy dresses” were papered all over South Williamsburg this week as temperatures climbed into the 90s.

And the women are heeding the admonishion.

“It could be 105 degrees out — you’ll never see any of my body,” said a Williamsburg woman, Sara Stern. “Our way of life is beautiful — very discreet.”

The tank top ban is the latest edict from the Central Rabbinical Congress, a council of rabbis known for enforcing strict moral codes on Hasidic women.

While plenty of folks will find the edict to be a sage guideline, you may not be surprised to learn that others are not as positive about this campaign.  Here’s Gothamist to explain:

The flyers, which are in Hebrew, were issued by the Central Rabbinical Congress, a group of rabbis known for enforcing “strict moral codes” on Hasidic women. The signs are an attempt to dissuade women from shopping for the revealing clothing available at Manhattan department stores. Apparently there’s been a handful of “bad apples” more interested in fashion than modesty, and the CRC is on a mission to keep them covered. But Baruch Herzefeld told the Brooklyn Paper that the group is intimidating women in the neighborhood, saying “These men think they are doing God’s work, but they are fanatics — everyone in Williamsburg hates them.

Well, maybe not everyone.  This neighborhood is not exactly South Beach:

The Council’s edicts appear to be having an effect.

Several Williamsburg residents said that the posters’ message primarily detours young women from buying revealing blouses, shirts, and tops available in Manhattan department stores.

“A very small percentage of women wear this kind of clothing and even if they are they’re wearing them over long-sleeve shirts,” said a proprietor of Englander Dry Goods on Lee Avenue.

The neighborhood’s strict Orthodox women typically wear below-the-knee skirts, shirts whose sleeves go well past the elbow, and blouses that cover up the neck. No, it’s not exactly a burka, but put it this way: There is very little risk of sunburn on even the brightest summer days.

Hasidic NY Community Divided Over...Tank Tops for Women

Stern said that the traditional dress is part of a thousand-year tradition of modesty among the Hasidic people — though there are a few “bad apples,” who flock to the latest trends.

There are huge differences between Hassidic Jews and the Muslims. Jews have never demanded special accomodation, in fact, if you‘re a really religious Jew then you’re probably gonna study at Yeshiva University, Baruch College, or maybe Brandeis if you want something more liberal but with kosher food. By the same token, they often live in their own neighborhoods, mind their own business, are productive citizens, send their kids to private religious schools, and as long as they don’t force tank top laws on women, they’re not doing any harm.

I respect their traditions and admire the Hasidim for adhering to them. More woman should be modest instead of flagrantly flaunting their bodies. Now if the Hassidic parents and community would only put pressure on those perverted rabbis who are having sex with young girls and your boys, to resign and or turn them in to the police for prosecution. But instead they shame the young victims to keep silent while these perverts continue preying upon unsuspecting children, ruining the victims lives forever.

If the Hasidic garb is only based on tradition…not the Bible…then, the women have a case to wear something not as heavy. Cover up ladies, please.

I think the gal in the pic above actually looks nice. But if she is punished for wearing something else, then that is a horse of a different color. Rule of thumb; wear what you want. If it is revealing, fine. As long as it is not too revealing. If it is a frumpy baggy sweater, fine too, and if you want to cover everything but the face, also fine but it is YOUR call, not Allah, the Mullah, Rabbi, minister, Priest or your man’s choice. I don‘t care if they’re “ho’s” (must be what you think all women are, Red Bubba) or religious. My problem with the religious is the women don’t have a choice and if you think Chasidic women have a choice, you’ve got another think coming. In Middle Eastern culture, a woman’s shoulders, arms and ankles are considered particularly sexy. A scantily dressed woman is considered morally loose and provocative. She wants the attention of men. That is a truth. A woman who dresses immodestly may not be doing so deliberately or knowingly, but she is conveying that message to men.

Most women think men are “beasts” for being visually oriented; they have no concept of how different men are physically, emotionally and mentally. Women demand that men be like women but they not only deny men their rightful place in God‘s design but they also don’t accept their own beautiful femininity. Each sex complements one another if rightly understood.

Men, if you love your woman, encourage her to dress modestly, especially because we live in a society where pornography is rampant. Treat her like your cherished one, the jewel in your crown. Protect her from lewd looks and sexual assault. You are the guardian over the ones you love. Encourage your female children to dress modestly as well.

Has this society descended so much that stating a desire for a moral standard is ridiculed? Is the depravity of the recent MTV awards is the new norm? Guys are visually stimulated creatures. By ALL means, I appreciate women who dress attractively and at the same time are comfortable but some go to the point of being a distraction. Isn‘t it the religious leaders’ duties to raise their concern within their communities? I definitely don‘t agree with certain views but as long as the women aren’t abused or harmed by the dress code, is it THAT bad? I‘m at an age that I don’t think people would appreciate ME in a muscle shirt. A bit of restraint, folks, on all sides, please.

As a non-orthodox Jew, I have a problem with this signage. Admittedly, the signs are directed at devout followers of chasidic traditions – not the general public. The general public doesn’t read the Hebrew anyway. But, since it is directed at traditionalist chasids, this message would be best delivered in schul (temple). The devout attend services regularly enough to receive the information either directly or through tight family/social network within the chasidic community.
The issue of ‘tank tops’ makes this appear that this is a sexist warning. As witnessed by this thread, the general public couldn‘t possibly know it isn’t sexist.
Unlike the misogynistic Islamic culture, chasidic males also conform to modestly restrictive & religiously appropriate apparel and hygiene (beards, long side burns, black top hats, coats, long sleeves). Unlike their fundamentalist muslim, male counterparts, the chasidic male does not enjoy shorts or wife-beater t-shirts in public on the hottest days either.
Although the Chasidic community will not enforce their dress code on the general public, I do find these posters unnecessarily provocative to the non-chasidic community at large.

Agreed and doesn’t both the Bible and Torah say if something offends you to pluck out your own eyes? Religion likes to blame women for men responding to them sexually. According to the ancient books, men can’t control their urges so women have to be controlled. If religious men are so distracted and put off by a tube top and shorts, then maybe they should blind themselves. I lived in the middle east for a long time and though I support Israel as an independent democratic country, they aren’t that much different from the rest of the arab world when it comes to women. Agreed and doesn’t both the Bible and Torah say if something offends you to pluck out your own eyes?

Actually red the Bible says if your eye causes you to sin to pluck it out. Mat 18:9, if you’re a Christian woman there is good reason to dress modestly. “[It is] good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor [any thing] whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.” In other words if you dress provactively and you cause your brother or sister to stumble into sin you as well are in sin. Also God commands women to dress modestly, “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes’” 1Timothy 2:9 The reason is that us children of God should not bring any undue attention to our selves by the way we dress, wear our hear, or jewelry. Although this scripture addresses women I believe this also goes for men as well. Just that women are more into attracting attention we are supposed to be attracting attention to our Lord, not us. However, if you’re not a Christian woman then dress the way you want, however if you’re a Christian woman I would suggest reading these scriptures and pray the Lord show you how you should dress.

After walking away, I just pictured in my head the kind of responses the above post would get. Half misquoting the Biblical verses on uncovering nudity (and, yet again, READ the verses people, don’t quote what just what you think they say) and the other half talking about men being animals who can’t control their sex drive.

I’ll answer both – first, nudity (let alone walking around in swimwear at the beach) isn’t sinful. The verses on uncovering nudity deal specifically with incest and incest-by-marriage. Read them. To the contrary, we have a verse of a female in the Bible rushing to greet her unmarried lover, naked, at night. (Song of Solomon 5:2-8). Plus, Adam and Eve in their sinless state were naked, and not ashamed. Shame comes from sin.

Secondly, women are kept well-covered in order to prevent them from “enticing” men with their bare skin. However, this paradoxically results in the opposite result. In cultures with the greatest repression of women (the Middle East), you find high levels of rape. Certainly a woman covered head-to-toe in clothing can’t be enticing men with their bare skin! And yet you see high levels of sexual predation. Likewise orthodox Jews and fundies get inordinately turned on by rather tame displays of flesh. But on topless beaches in France, the opposite is true. The lesson, brothers and sisters, for those of us worried about the temptations of the flesh, is that making something secret and mysterious inflames desire, rather than sooth

This response is to Footbear. First, like the name Footbear, cool. Second, this is not the format to get into details on modesty, feminism, and the Torah’s position on nudity. However, let me briefly answer by telling you it is an issue of repsect for men and their nature that women voluntarily agree to “cover-up.” It is also a response to feminism, who started off proclaiming that women are equal to men. However, the feminsim that won the internal feminist argument, was to say women are the SAME as men, which is why you find the girls today take off all their clothes, to show they are NOT men. The real feminism, the kind Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman live says that women are equal, but different. The Orthodox women are sending the same message. There is something to be said about modesty as Kaydeebeua said.
You are correct Adam and Eve were naked, until they REALIZED they were naked after eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The KNOWLEDGE they were naked and that they put clothes ON was a recognition of what the knowledge does to the sexes. Nudity is not a sin, knowing you are naked and understanding nakendess is different.
Jewish communities are freely chosen, mostly because they agree with the Rabbi’s.

You’re right, and I might add that it is really not difficult to dress trendy and stylish yet also modestly. I know; I do it every day. There’s stuff out there that can flatter and be attractive without being trashy. I want a guy to appreciate me for who I am, not because of how much skin I’m showing!

They like it over here in America,,,,that’s why they are trying to change it and make it just like where they came from.

It’s their neighborhood, if they want to put signs advocating anything, that’s a first amendment right. Besides, if it was a Muslim neighborhood, they would not be asking, they would be beating you up if you don’t conform with their laws. Call me crazy, but when was the last time a gang of Hassidic Jews raped a girl? Oh wait, Jewish gangs don’t exist.

Women (and men) who dress modestly are more attractive.

Just put a classy dressing, dignified woman next to one who dresses shabby, revealing all her goods and the difference is obvious to most real men.

      WhiteFang,
Good to see your still here.

My thought is, dressing with modesty is a indicator of self respect and by extension, respect for others. Some who dress overly casual usually have a low opinion of themselves and is a indicator of their personality. On occasion I will dress very casual around the house and if I have to go to the store real quick for some milk, hopefully I won’t meet a friend to see me in that embarrassing condition.

      Its odd.

Everybody rushes to criticise islam for dictating women‘s dress code but when Rabbi’s do it, the response is, at best, muted.

I agree that they are not calling for the full burqua but it is, frankly, none of their business.

Foobear said above; “nudity (let alone walking around in swimwear at the beach) isn’t sinful.”

I don’t think we are talking about sin here, isn’t it about dressing to either elevate our dignity or dressing down to damage our worth in the eyes of others. There is a lack of class in our society that is regrettable. Just walk around in a WalMart and you can see it. :-(

@Oldtrucker: Sure. There’s people that can dress well, and people that can dress badly – but this is true of how much or how little clothing they wear. But these are all questions of taste and social expectations. As much as I hate to see a man wearing a speedo, this is considered acceptable by Europeans and professional swimmers. It’s not a religious issue, though, in and of itself.

They call the Hasidic men penguins in the strip clubs and by the hookers on the avenue. They go to bed with garbage and take the sexual diseases home to their wives and that folks is the dirty little secret in the Hasidic community in NYC. By the way there call penguins because they dress in black and white.
