When 22-year-old Jefferson Bethke created “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus,” the now-viral video about Jesus and religion, he had no idea the response would be so fervent. As of today, the short clip has been viewed 15.8 million times on YouTube and has gained wide-spread media attention. Christians and non-believers, alike, are buzzing about it, while showering the young artist with both praise and criticism.
On Friday, Bethke spoke with the Blaze’s Editor-in-Chief Scott Baker on GBTV’s “For the Record,” addressing the controversy, his intentions and his strong faith perspective.
Scroll down to see the GBTV interview with Bethke

Here are a few of the lines from the original video that caused angst among some who felt that the artist’s insinuations about religion were too harsh and unfair:
What if I told you Jesus came to abolish religion? [...]
I mean, if religion is so great, why has it started so many wars?
Why does it build huge churches but fails to feed the poor? [...]
Not realizing religion’s like spraying perfume on a casket
See, the problem with religion is it never gets to the core
It’s just behavior modification, like a long list of chores
Supporters claim that his lyrics were likely intended to encourage viewers to focus faith upon Jesus rather than traditions, rituals and “works.” But lines like those presented above (others, including “Jesus and religion are on opposite spectrums” and “So know I hate religion, in fact I literally resent it” only added fuel to the fire) offended those who consider religious confines important to their worship experience.
For a refresher, here’s the original video:
In addressing these comments, particularly those controversial remarks at the beginning of the clip, Baker asked, ”Did you want this to be…a punch of the face to traditional religion?”
“No, not necessarily,” Bethke responded. “My hope in that beginning was trying to draw in the people who I engage with on a daily basis in my Seattle college context. And those are just some of the lines and some of the paradigms I see.”
Bethke went on to explain that he created the video so that he could share his struggles, while highlighting Jesus’ attributes. His goal, he said, was to take on the common characteristics of religion he sees in his local area.
In addressing the controversy over his words, he was candid, saying that he believes that much of the divide over his take on religion centers upon semantics.
“In my context, I’m in Seattle — religion, in shorthand, is defined as legalism, self-righteousness, self-justification,” he explained. “Once I put the video out, I realized a lot of people in the nation don’t define it as that.”
He went on to further clarify his stance, saying, “Religion as the institution and as the church — as Jesus’ bride — that is God’s plan A and there is no plan B. So I don’t want to abolish that. I don’t want to turn from that. And that’s where God is manifest.”

In the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Jonathan D. Fitzgerald delved into reaction to the video:
Kevin DeYoung, a blogger at “The Gospel Coalition,” a popular Reformed Christian site, wrote that “amidst a lot of true things in this poem there is a lot that is unhelpful and misleading.”
Mr. Bethke, he notes, “perfectly captures the mood, and in my mind the confusion, of a lot of earnest, young Christians“ who interpret the word religion to mean ”self-righteousness, moral preening, and hypocrisy.” The problem, Mr. DeYoung notes, is this is not what religion is, and Jesus didn’t hate religion. Jesus was an observant Jew, Mr. DeYoung points out. Jesus clearly said he didn’t come to abolish the law or ignore the prophecies but to fulfill them. In fact he founded the church and instituted the sacrament of communion.
Fitzgerald went on to state his own qualms with Bethke’s video. He addresses what he sees as mischaracterizations, particularly when it comes to charity, violence and religion with no restrictions. In addition to making a case for religions and related generosity, he mentioned the fact that most prominent mass murders in the 20th century occurred for nonreligious reasons and he noted the problems that can arise when pastoral rhetoric goes unchecked.

Fitzgerald concludes, “…advocating for a kind of Christianity that is free of the ‘bondage’ of religion opens the door to dangerous theological anarchy that is all too common among young evangelicals and absolutely antithetical to biblical Christianity.”
On Christianity Today’s Her.meneutics blog for women, Laura Ortberg Turner also addressed these issues. While she seems to understand why some believers find frustration in the video, she offers a more moderate perspective on Bethke and his take on religion:
I’m guessing Bethke doesn’t actually hate religion. In fact, I would bet my last dollar that he loves it. As we are told in James, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” In fact, it sounds strikingly similar to where Bethke claims ‘religion’ falls short: “Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor/Tells single moms God doesn’t love them if they’ve ever had a divorce?” [...]
In all of this, Bethke has remained a picture of grace and humility. He has responded, with class to those of us who have been quick to criticize and condemn. What Bethke was really protesting, it would seem, is faith without works. Empty rhetoric and selfish thinking. Building testaments to our own greatness and abandoning the widow and the orphan. What we need now is not less religion, indeed, but more than ever.
In terms of his purported “grace and humility,” Turner also noted Bethke‘s response to DeYoung’s critiques. The artist responded to the blogger via e-mail and was entirely honest and open about how he’s processing the response to his video. In addition to being humble in addressing criticisms, Bethke even said that, if he could do it again, he would further elaborate on some of the more sensitive points he addressed. Bethke wrote:
I just wanted to say I really appreciate your article man. It hit me hard. I’ll even be honest and say I agree 100%. God has been working with me in the last 6 months on loving Jesus AND loving his church. For the first few years of walking with Jesus (started in ’08) I had a warped/poor paradigm of the church and it didn’t build up, unify, or glorify His wife (the Bride). If I can be brutally honest I didn’t think this video would get much over a couple thousand views maybe, and because of that, my points/theology wasn’t as air-tight as I would’ve liked. If I redid the video tomorrow, I’d keep the overall message, but would articulate, elaborate, and expand on the parts where my words and delivery were chosen poorly… My prayer is my generation would represent Christ faithfully and not swing to the other spectrum….thankful for your words and more importantly thankful for your tone and fatherly like grace on me as my elder. Humbled. Blessed. Thankful for painful growth. Blessings.
Atheists, too, got in on the criticism. A well-known non-believer who calls himself “The Amazing Atheist” posted a long-winded response, explaining why he hates both Jesus and religion. You can watch it, below (caution: strong language):
Bethke’s video, it seems, has taken Tim Tebow’s place as the most talked about contemporary faith controversy. Of course, considering the power and fury of viral news and content, this could quickly change. And on the Tebow front, well — there’s always next season (i.e. the famed football and his signature “Tebowing” will be back). For now, it’s all Bethke, all the time.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 2:22pmCan I just say, as an atheist that I love the message this young man is spreading. I have never had a problem with the figure of Jesus, or his message. It has always been the message of the church that turns my stomach. Jesus himself was a figure who rebelled against society and doctrine, who questioned authority, and who brought to us a message of peace and brotherly love. In short Jesus was a hippy, a rebel-rouser. The modern church, if he were to come back, would not only not include him within their church, but would be threatened that his message would again destroy the power they hold over the masses.
When atheists argue against christianity, this is what they argue against. Not jesus, or the message of Christ, but the church and their doctrines.
I applaud this young gentleman, and I wish, WISH all religious folks were as intelligent and warm as this individual.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 5:59pmI want you all to think on this:
In it’s pure, original form religion was a compliment to faith. But over time there has been a load of corruption. The Church (Catholic of the Dark Ages) asking for Indulgences, The Inquisition, pedifile priest cover-ups, the witch trials, and so on are just the glaring examples of religion with no true faith.
Even on The Blaze, you see “religious christians” striking out in arrogance and hate when questioned about their religion.
What you all miss is there is a divide between the faith (beliefs in God, Jesus, the Word and teachings) and religion ( the organizations and structures that rule like mini-governments). I don‘t know if that’s what this young man was seeing and commenting on, but that‘s what I’ve seen on The Blaze since Christmas and for decades before.
And it’s all made worse when “christians” argue that “their religion is better than your religion” when the faith is supposed to be the same. Same Jesus, same God, same faith… different church and religion.

It IS the same faith in the Christian church, wether people are Catholic, Protestant, Morman, etc. As long as they believe Jesus is the Son of God and risen from the dead for them personally. I have seen some bashing of the Mormons but that is mainly from people who don’t like Beck. We all have some error in our beliefs depending on our church teachings, but Christ will set all of that on the corrected path someday. There has definetely been bad words about Muslems on this site, including from me. They are sworn to kill us if they get the opportunity. As far as Islam is concerned, they DO NOT worship the same God. They worship Satan who is lying about his name, but their deeds tell the truth abut who their god really is. I appreciate your comment and can agree with you in many ways. I just felt a need to clarify about other religions, especially the evil one. Different churches or deniminations are not the same as different “religions”.

A True Muslim does worship the same God. The Majority of Muslims have been corrupted in the middle east. Muslims do not worship Satan. And while you seem to have a completely clear view on your fellow Christians, your view on Muslims is extremely distorted. It also appalls me that some people translate the Qu’ran incorrectly, and sometimes it is blatantly on purpose. The only Qu’ran quotations you can trust are ones in Arabic.
Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (for the right); they rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous. Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right (3:113-115 AYA).
Nearest among them in love to the Believers wilt thou find those who say, “We are Christians”: Because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant (5:85 AYA/82 MP).
Muslims do not worship the devil. It is an atrocity that some Muslims have “strayed from the path of righteousness” and do not “befriend the People of the Book, as they worship the same God, and follow God in The Torah and the Bible”. I beg you to study the Islamic religion before giving all Muslims the same ‘brand-name’ as the Terrorist

The “Old Testament” of the Qu’ran is almost exactly like the Bible. I ask you to read the first part of the Qu’ran. You will be familiar with it. However, if you read the second part of the Qu’ran, it is very violent and exactly what many Terrorists/Suicide Bombers/Al Quaida “Muslims” follow. Someone between the years 570 and now someone has gone back to the Qu’ran and added this section. They also conveniently added to it that “The latter words of the Qu’ran supercede the former”. Some radical Muslims took to this latter part of the Qu’ran, and they did what Liberals do; they go after the children. From the age of 2, they indoctrinate children in the Middle East to believe that the U.S. is evil, that People of the Book should be killed, and it’s horrible. I only hope that this problem will eventually be gone, that we can beat these terrorists, and that they will fix the Middle Eastern Schools.

You deserve a thoughtful response to a thoughtful & peaceful post. I appreciate what you are saying, however I have these things to offer regarding the God of the Bible & Allah of the Qu’ran being the same God.
If the God of the Bible & Allah of the Qu’ran were one & the same, shouldn’t their words agree? If not shouldn’t we conclude that they are not the same? Sticking w/ the non-violent half that you assert is the original, uncorrupted version I offer this:
You quote the following:
Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (for the right); they rehearse the Signs of Allah … they hasten … good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous. Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right (3:113-115 AYA).

What does the Qu’ran (the good half) teach regarding the Jews?
The God of the Bible makes clear He is the God of Avraham, Yitz’chak and Ya`akov (Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob) – over 10 times does he refer to Himself by that name in the Old Testament & 5 times in the New. Essentially He has identified Himself by His relationship w/ Israel. Nowhere in the Bible does He refer to Himself as the God of Ishmael – clearly if He intended such He would have done so before Mohamed (who came on the world scene ~600 yrs after Christ was crucified &

A faithful, biblically sound, Christian will acknowledge that our God is a Jewish God – and His Christ Yeshua (Jesus)- the Son of God – the Son of David – the Son of Adam: in His flesh is Jewish. We cannot ignore that, & we cannot ignore the warnings of the Apostle Paul (also a Jew, an Israelite) regarding the forsaking of the natural branch (Romans 11), nor the fact that when He (Jesus) returns to establish His Kingdom on earth it will be from the throne of David in Jerusalem (Luke 1:32).
What does the Qu’ran teach regarding the person of Yeshua (Jesus) Christ? God or a prophet?
Jesus never claimed to be a prophet – on the contrary He claimed to be God. He forgave sins & accepted worship – something only God has right to do (e.g. Mark 2, Luke 5:18-26, John 20:28)
Jesus Christ claimed to be the voice of the burning bush (Exodus 3:14), the great “I AM” & held all accountable for knowing it. Read John chapter 8 carefully & see two key verses in particular:
Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I AM you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)
Yeshua, Christ, never even mentioned Ishmael nor did He prophesy regarding Mohamed – on the contrary He stated that the Law & the prophets were till John the Baptist

(meaning that John was the last prophet), for one Greater than John was here (speaking of Himself – the Son of God) – John 5, Matthew 11 & Luke 16.
Christians (disciples of Christ) acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (meaning He too is God) & that His sacrificial death on the Cross atoned (paid for) man’s sins before the Holy, Just, & Righteous God (made up of Father, Son, & Holy Spirit). Does the Qu’ran, did Mohamed, teach that Jesus Christ is God & He atoned for the sins of mankind? Or does it call Him a prophet & does it say that your own good deeds will make you right w/ Allah?
Christianity (the Bible) teaches that all men sin & fall short of God’s glory. They are hopelessly lost, however Jesus Christ (Emmanuel – God with us), while we were yet sinners died for us. He IS the Passover Lamb. He became sin on the Cross so that we could have His righteousness & stand before God justified (Isaiah 53, Psalms 22). We cannot earn our way to Paradise – it is the free gift of God who gave His only begotten (of the same kind) Son that whosoever believes upon – trusts in, clings to – Him shall never perish but have everlasting life.
We can conclude that the God of the Bible & Allah of the Qu’ran are not the same as they clearly contradict one another (both in the nature of Jesus Christ & purpose & method of Salvation). So either the Bible is the true Word of God, or the Qu’ran, or neither – but they both can’t b

Keep in mind there is also a difference in this way:
the idea is to desire relationship with Creator… Elohim.
through all the ages, all the generations, The goal was to return to Him.
YahShuah (Jesus) was the Ultimate manifestation of God’s Love for His Creation….
to once and for all establish The Way.
“Religion” has always devolved through corruption and man’s usurpation of leadership.
Ideally, yes, the children of YHWH should all have similar attributes and characteristics that could be described as their “religion”, yet even the meaning of the word “religion” has been diminished and diluted to the point that it’s primary definition now is merely what, an “ideology of worshiping a deity or higher power”?
I don’t like using the word religion either.
I didn’t “get” religion – I personally know my Redeemer.
I came to understand that I was Created because my Father loved me and wanted me to come to know Him. I sought YahShuah and asked forgiveness because I know this flesh – this existence – ends at the grave. If i set my heart to follow and seek God’s Truths, He is Faithful to never forsake me.
I would much rather have that Assurance, than to worry whether i have the right membership card, you know?

Awesome, awesome postings…..
FantaGirl, one of the things that has also caused the confusion with “religion” are the lies of satan into the ears of the children saying there are all these various “manifestations” of god….
if you think about it, the very act of choosing “how i will worship my god” – by joining a “selected ”religion” or establishing a regime, or “process of works” – wouldn’t that be a disobedience to God, who wants us to worship him in Truth?
And what is Truth?
That He Created us to be in fellowship with Him. There was no sin…. there were no other gods. It wasn’t until we disobeyed, and corrupted everything.
If we agree that God – the Creator of the Universe, Creator of Adam, Eve -
bringer of the Flood, God of Abram.
If we agree that “that” GOD was the same, and it is from HIM that all the different “factions”, interpretations, conceptions (as well as mis-conceptions), and ultimately all the different “religions” have come from, it is obvious that man’s attempts to create and understand God in “our own understanding” has really messed things up.
God gave the Israelites the Torah… and established the Law … temple sacrifices… is Judaism then the cultural religion? Why sacrifices for a time, but now?… no longer.
It was temporary because He wanted our relationship to be “personal”… not “ritual”

So if someone is of the opinion that religion is the root of all evil then I would tend to agree, if you see religion with this definition in mind.
However the “religion” of Christianity, for example, has founded hospitals, orphanages, world disaster relief organizations, gives to the poor, helps the unfortunate, the alcoholic, the murderer, the unkind, the lonely and the unloved. In fact, Christianity is not a religion. It is a relationship with none other than Jesus Christ. In the early days of the founding of the church the word “Christian” was a derogatory word given to those people who followed Christ. They were called “those christ-ones”.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 5:16pmHe has unfortunately missed the point.
Jesus didn’t preach against religion he preached against religiosity.
That is, he preached against those think their religion makes them better than others.
He preached against those who think the things they do can earn them a passage to heaven.
He preached against those whe think they can save themselves.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 5:38amI don’t think he necessarily cared what Jesus said. Odd.
It’s like “I love Jesus but don’t care to read his thoughts/words on things that don’t fit my opinion”.
I think the only way you can arrive at that is if you discredit the Bible/New Testament as incorrect in their portrayal of Jesus.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 10:06amI think that all he meant was to separate out formality and processes within the framework of many organizations from relationship with Christ. Someone above this post commented about being worshipers in Spirit and in Truth- not on this mountain or that, or not based on this denomination or that. When human organizations stifle that individual relationship, and do not serve the advancement of the greater Body of Christ on Earth, they can work contrary to what Christ taught.
Jesus taught us to not pray with many, prescribed words, but to speak directly to God as Father, and to Him as friend. Nobody needs to go through any man. We are to learn from God and not be pulled away by the teachings of man.
Having said this, I will tell you that God specifically told me to go to church. And I need to resume my participation. We are made to be as one on earth, as He is one with the Father- or so He says. But we are to make sure that man‘s precepts don’t get added onto or wrapped around to choke out the Spirit of God, but rather is the gathering of believers in an organized manner in order to accomplish more for Christ than Islands working alone.
We humans tend to put our faith in preachers, structure and feel-good easy answers. A successful church brings a believer closer to Christ in relationship, to deepen their ability to love, trust and obey Him. There is nothing wrong with asking these questions. I do believe we are in need of revival- individually and corporat

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 10:15amMany millions of our youth have taken hold of this video because they believe in it’s message. This guy isn’t saying churches are bad- he clarifies this in the video. I believe he is trying to inspire honest looks at the organizations we place our faith in, to remind us that it is relationship with Christ that matters more than church ordinances. Who can’t relate with the idea that many who sit on the pews are more concerned with the appearance of godliness than the living power of Christ within them?
Can we honestly say that our churches inspire the transparency, faith and action that growing churches in third world nations do? Are we playing church at times, or is it real? For many, the answer is certain, and their church, and they themselves as members, are fulfilling the purpose that God has for them. But what is wrong with the question???

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.”
if you add to or take anything away from this Bible.
Books that add to and take way from the Bible are the Book of Mormon, the Urantia Book and the Koran. Jesus is the only contributor to a Bible is no longer in his grave – all other are still in their graves.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 10:29amAnd do we need a dose of real-ness in our faith organizations in America. Apparently, the youth believe so, and they are all screaming this same message as loud as they can. The words the young man uses are heard in youth groups all across this nation, and they are passionate about this message- and I frankly agree with them.
We are called to participate and to help make the physical organizations we attend more like the True, larger Body of Christ. Let’s make it so and stop being defensive if someone is ASKING us to look at it? “Well churches do more good…” An athiest can say this, many believing going to church brings social benefit.
But I will state clearly that denomination does not define my place in eternity. Good ministers, God bless them, will not teach in heaven. We will not need the Bible in heaven, because we will hear from Christ in ways that we could never understand while on Earth.
And He is calling us to relationship with Him and relationship with others (I need to grow in this area, for sure). It is good to ask these questions. The boy isn’t trying to tear down, he is trying to build. Just like Jesus teaches that it is the refining process which is sometimes painful, which produces the purest gold.
The video asks us to desire transparency. To look ourselves and our churches in the faith, and tear down anything that would keep us from walking even closer to God. Fountains and stained glass alone don’t cut it. God wan’ts more.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:52pmBethke’s ideas are wrong on many levels, but the main problem with his system of thought is that he tries to eliminate any efforts to compare Christ to other gods. This could be just another attempt by the left to eradicate religion from our midst, but one of the main intentions of our forefathers when they penned the constitution was to allow for free and open debate on many issues, including religion, in the public square. The strongest argument for Christ rests on His comparison to other gods, through which He wipes out the competition (no other god offers free salvation through such a loving and selfless act). Bethke may be attempting, intentionally or unintentionally, to weaken the argument for Christ in public debate by arguing for the removal of all comparison.
This may be just another example of how the left in America is highly involved in the devil’s bidding.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 10:39amI agree also, and as iron sharpens iron (not just as used by people as relates to scriptural knowledge), in the aspect of causing some introspection- the poem is great. God wants so much more form us than the sleepy little habits in our lives that often include church attendance without passion, conviction or Spirit. America would not be in the problem she is in if we were in a state of revival. But too many are asleep, satisfied in their knowledge that they are doing the right things. We should all ask the question and seek that which is greater- closeness to God which inspires love of others, which in fact (as the poem indicates), causes us to gather with others.
But are our organizations and our behavior within them reminiscent of the early church at all? Or have we created layers of organization that often cloud what is meant to be transparent, and stifle what is meant to be free? The Holy Spirit mingling with our own. This comes from God and relationship to Him. The poem is nothing more than a reminder of this.
I hate that the more scholarly are making this kid apologize for a heartfelt message that is opening many people to the possibility that church can be CHURCH, and life can replace and strip away pretense. America needs a dose of this message about now.

Remember Jesus accusations against the popular religion of the day; “Ful well ye reject the commandments of God that you may keep your own tradition.” There is only one true religion, and that is the one Jesus has established, and which He is the “cheif cornerstone.“ That religion is based on ”let a man deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” This fleshly presentation is actually promoting a false tradition of man, which makes obedience to Jesus commands, optional rather than mandatory. Classis calvanism, but primarily and example of ‘twisting the scriptures to ones own destruction.’ This is the “error of the lawless.” Better take heed of Jesus warnings in the parable of the ten virgins, and the unprofitable servant. “If the righteous scarcely (with great difficulty) be saved, where will the ungodly and sinner appear?”
