Have Terrorists Stolen Libya’s Shoulder-Fired Missiles?

Obama’s top terrorism advisor has admitted the U.S. is very concerned that terrorists in Libya could get their hands on anti-aircraft shoulder-fired missiles — weapons that could be used to attack NATO aircraft or a civilian jumbo jetliner.

John Brennan, the White House Advisor for Counterterrorism, told the Christian Science Monitor yesterday that the possibility of Qadhafi’s extensive shoulder-fired missile stockpiles falling into terrorist hands remained a major concern for the U.S. and the Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC).

Brennan claimed the TSC is currently working with NATO partners to identify the means by which terrorists could acquire shoulder-fired missiles. Given that the Coalition in Iraq was unable to secure weapons depots despite a huge presence of U.S. boots on the ground, it appears the fledgling Libyan government is unlikely to prevent smugglers, rebels, or terrorists from acquiring Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS).

Here is Brennan, speaking to the Christian Science Monitor:

Brennan specifically referred to MANPADS in his speech like the Russian made SA-7. But that is a Soviet-era, 1960′s version of what may already be in the possession of unknown parties. The bigger threat is that the advanced, more dangerous MANPAD systems in Qadhafi’s stockpiles are or will soon be in terrorist hands.

The lack of government control and Libya’s vast, wide-open borders mean that any weapons that do fall into the wrong hands could be easily transported out of the country.

Brennan cited al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in his speech, an al-Qaeda offshoot that operates primarily in lawless areas of the Sahara desert. The E.U.’s chief counterterrorism coordinator stated just yesterday that AQIM is spreading out across North Africa.

Also, a rebel who may not have any ties to terrorism could decide the lure of black market cash is reason enough to hand a few shoulder-fired missiles to an AQIM member on the back of a pickup truck.

Clearly, if the TNC is still figuring out ways the terrorists could get their hands on weapons, it is likely they already have.

Case in point: The New York Times already believes missiles may have already been stolen in Libya — the only question is, by whom? The Times wrote yesterday that one of its reporters toured a weapons depot in Tripoli that had recently been pillaged.

Libyan authorities have since claimed that the site was guarded and anything missing must have been taken by TNC security forces.

But in the Times account there was also evidence that the highly advanced Russian SA-24 heat-seeking missile– which can shoot a plane down at 11,000 feet– was among stockpiles at the now unguarded Gadhafi weapons depot.

The reporter found crates with the Russian designation for the SA-24 written on them. And they were empty.

      I agree packsack. I don’t believe that they are acting like they are concerned though. They know that they aided the muslim brotherhood in getting control of Libya, in effect giving the country to muslim terrorists. Lets see; are they concerned that terrorists may have stolen Libya’s shoulder fired missles? NOPE, they weren’t stolen at all. They were just confiscated by the muslim brotherhood terrorists that obama gave the country to.

      As opposed to passenger jets, I could see these being used in Afghanistan to shoot down more helos…while I take the reports that an RPG nailed the helo carrying the Seals (and others) as the truth, kind of makes you wonder if they were actually hit w/ something like this. Imagine how difficult it would be to hit a helo, in the air, flying 100+ mph, with an inaccurate RPG; now imagine how difficult that shot would have been w/ one of these. Hope our boys (and girls) flying over there got some surface-to-air missle countermeasures that work…

      Stolen??? The U.S. and NATO may as well have shipped them to these terrorists. Supporting the Libyan “freedom fighters” (think “Che” when you hear a progressive use those words) guaranteed this outcome. Our military targets should have all been about taking out Libyan weapons, not supporting the “freedom fighters”.

    Why should this come as any kind of shock at all — the webnews in the UK and Europe has been on the ball about this for several weeks now; The Russian MANPAD’s they are speaking of may not be the best in the world yet they still can do the job, and even if they do miss the target, the sheer amount of chaos it will cause, and changes shoved down the throats of Americans, by the admin and Homeland Paranoia Insecurity Administration will be astronomical.

    I have to wonder if the “Rebels” stole the missiles or were given them, either by the administration or others; and one other possibility to consider, Quaddafi is on the way out for now (hopefully for good), and may have given them to terror allies of HIS OWN for revenge missions.

    Not to worry, Marine 1 and Air force 1 have adequate protections against these arms as long as they stay above 40kft, maybe! That is not as certain for commercial aircraft. You may note they all have to land some time. The good news you can now keep your shoes on while boarding commercial aircraft, These new tools of the terrorist have made the shoe bombs obsolete. As for our beloved president and his appeal to pass this bill. I recommend that when this bill is presented, it be shredded into palatable sizes, eaten then PASSED as the bowel detritus it is. PEPTO BISMOLE ANYONE.

    intentionaly provided by all parities that sponsored the so called nato response in libya.
    their is no other explanation, thier never was any discourse on who these so called rebels where and are and why we where arming them in the first place. We could of 100% taken care of qadaffi in a different manner that would not have through the country in chaos. however thats what this administration wanted and needed to have happen. for what cuase or end result is still to wash out.
    fast and furious does draw some parreles if anyone wishes to do some homework. above my risk tolerance though.

And now aiding-and-abetting-the-terrorists John Brennan, who not too long ago called Jerusalem al Quds, is saying he is very concerned. And I’m sure that is an understatement.

      Keep your citizens armed; well armed. You will not have to worry about such threats. That’s the beauty of the constitution and its provision for no permanent standing armies and its strong second amendment. The strongest deterrent against thieves and invaders(and tyranny) is the fear that any ordinary citizen can take you out. Laws punish lawlessness they do not deter lawlessness… um… that‘s why it’s called, ‘lawlessness’.

      Love of country is a odd thing…it tends to lead one to have strong emotions, especially when you see your nation being raped by its so-called “representatives,” left undefended by it’s president, robbed by an ideology that has been proven to fail everywhere it has been tried.

      If you don’t have strong emotions these days, perhaps it is because (1) you are living with your head where the sun don’t shine, or (2) you believe in socialism, and can’t wait for America to become one of the crowd…of third world nations…

    Most of his (Kaddafi) stuff was SA-14s. It’s an absolute surity that a bunch of those weapons were stolen. Same as what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan – as soon as the guard force runs away the looters go in and grab the guns and ammo. Its the reason why nearly every male in Iraq and AFG have an AK47.
