Have You Seen Herman Cain‘s New ’Smoking’ Ad?

The new ad from GOP front-runner Herman Cain has pundits scratching their heads, using it to tie the candidate to lobbying money from big tobacco, and in some cases, just laughing out loud.

Watch the ad in question:

That’s Mark Block, Cain’s chief of staff.  While it may seem curious that the Cain campaign has decided to use a high-ranking official as a spokesperson, it is even more curious to some that the ad shows Block smoking a cigarette.

During the opening segment of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the hosts were tripping over each other’s words to express their surprise, shock, outrage, etc. Mika stayed in her role as hall monitor of the show and confiscated the pack of cigarettes that New York Magazine writer John Heilemann brought out as a comedic prop.

Michelle Goldberg, Senior writer at Newsweek and the Daily Beast did not seem to be concerned about the smoking, but she did take issue with the smiling image of Herman Cain at the end of the ad:

Over at The Atlantic, Cain’s ad was the all Senior Editor Garance Franke-Ruta needed to tie both Block and Cain to Big Tobacco.

Before joining the Cain campaign, Block served as Wisconsin state director for free-market advocacy group Americans for Prosperity, which has opposed state smoking bans.

Cain also opposed smoking bans during his years working in Washington on behalf of a restaurant trade lobbying group.

I guess you can call it a “smokin’” ad.

BTW – The song heard in Cain’s ad is from Krista Branch. “I Am America” has been the official Cain theme song for a few months, but it has been heard at 9-12 Project and Tea Party events for over a year. The YouTube post of the song has been viewed over a million times.

    I liked the ad – didn‘t have that ’big production’ feel to it but rather a no nonsense feel. Would have liked a bit more content about his (Hermans) ideologies. The smoking did seem odd but I’m not a smoker. On a side not – if Mika tried to grab my ciggies (or what ever my poison of choice) she would pull back a bloody stump.

      I forgot to add – Cain is committed suspected fraud with campaign donations. He has redirected nearly a million dollars towards his private company. The FEC is now investigating to see why that is happening.

      Maybe Cain knows that the anti smoking lawyer groups and the whole business was a scam totally. The intitial suit was against the oil companies because of the smog from the cars. Somehow the oil companies got off the hook. One rumor was the oil companies shut off the oil in the 70‘s to press the Gov that they were part of National Security and coundn’t be sued. The next profitable company linked to lung cancer was cigarettes. It was a perfect scenario, smoking and smog for a person with genes not capable to fight was a slam dunk. Another rumor was the big pharma’s funded some of it just to supply the pills and patches to every state at a cost of billions only to be given away for free. The anti smoking groups bad mouthed the smell but they were the ones sitting in front of their fireplaces watching the equivilent of thousands of cigarettes go up in flames and feeling cozy inhaling the smoke and getting in their cars and sitting in traffic consuming exhaust while listening to music. It’s all a scam for money.

      Who cares if the Democrats won’t vote for him–since when did we need that shrinking minority anyway?

      The ad’s a nice way of saying, here’s your civil liberties back.

It’s all about controlling the population by isolating those they do not approve of, making them appear to be outcasts. Just like trying to convince conservatives that “process” is more important than principles when choosing our candidate for President.       Anyone else feel like The Blaze is not an avid proponent of Cain 2012? They’re always spinning stories negatively about him. I love The Blaze. Read it every day. ANYway, this ad is fine, but the smoking is uncategorically weird and unnecessary. I don’t get it. What was the point of that? Cain’s COS is obviously is attempting to stress the point that this is a free country and he can smoke if he wants, but I’m not quite sure WHY he is. It has nothing to do with Cain’s candidacy, from what I can tell. If so, please enlighten me. That said, CAIN 2012!

      Cain turned out to be a master manipulator. Whether you are for smoking in public places or not, realize that this is nothing but a DAMAGE-CONTROL ad. Cain scr*wed up big time with his “govt take your hands off my right to murder my baby,” so now he puts out an ad with no facts, but with a subliminal message, namely “government don’t mess with my individual rights.” Essentially they are the same “govt. hands-off” message, except that this one appeals to the other side of the aisle. And yes, his smile is creepy.

      Unlike V-Man, I thought it was funny too. V-Man, I like Ron Paul. I think he has the strongest grasp of Constitutional Issues. I like his plan for cutting the deficit more than any other candidate.

      Unfortunately, I don’t think he has the communications skills needed to convince the majority of the voters on these issues. He comes off as professorial and that is not the kind of person that will get elected to the Presidency. I am also somewhat ad odds with his views on Foreign Policy. I think that his statements regarding Iran were naive at best. I don’t want to see us in wars oversees, but just bringing troops home regardless of the outcomes does not seem to me to be a viable policy.

      I agree that the ad was good. It seems like you can cut the hypocrisy with a knife.The same liberals who would likely strenuously argue for the legalization of Marijuana, are now arguing for the banning of tobacco. Smoking marijuana is far worse for you than tobacco, though I personally do not recommend either. “In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50-70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.” nih.gov

      So, recently liberals everywhere have been pushing for smoking bans everywhere. Even in a persons own private residence or car. This is prohibition all over again.

      They feel if they ban it for a while people will revolt for their nicotine fix?

    Personally, I am allergic to cigarette smoke, and my kids hate the smell – but I wouldn‘t want to infringe on anyone’s right to do it. It’s legal, and a result of having the liberty to make one’s own choices in life. You make your choices, and you learn to live with the consequences. No excuses.

    And that’s one thing I want my children to learn about life.

      So am I, didn’t realise it until my husband stopped smoking in the house. He later quit, but too late, he died of lung cancer. I hate the stuff, but I believe smokers have the right to smoke, just as people have the right to drink. I don’t have to like it, but I respect their rights. We now have many little liberties taken away because we allowed smokers rights to be infringed on. Rush Limbaugh called it spot on.

      Smoking is not a right. Second-hand smoke is deadly, but we have been brainwashed into believing it is a right. A cigarette not only releases poisonous gases into the air, but small particles of highly toxic pollutants which stay in the environment for hours. Nobody has a right to harm other human beings.       I really like Cain but he needs to clarify what he’s proposing as far as his tax plan and his foreign policy stances.He’s a lot more experienced and credible than what Obama was when he was running and promoted. This ad does stand out, but weird and a bit creepy. It‘s not the typical one of the candidate with the sweater tied over his shoulders as he shakes a senior citizen’s hand in a coffee shop, through in a golden retriever. I hope that there will be better ads for Cain though. This one won’t sell….. and makes no direct statement.

      IMO, you can‘t change a person’s perspective about life with laws… you have to change their hearts. However, the federal government needs to stay out of the decision as to whether abortion is legal or not – it’s not a constitutional right to abort a child.

      I also believe that life begins at conception, and that we have a personal responsibility to respect life at all stages. It‘s why I became my mother’s guardian when she was diagnosed with alzheimer’s. Otherwise, my brothers would have had her living in her home and she would have died quickly, not receiving any help or care at all. They are Democrats. I’m a Conservative.

      I think that the smoking is a symbolic “finger” to liberals who want to control our lives. Kind of like don‘t tell I can’t have fries at McDonalds. While I am no smoker and do like staying non-smoking motel rooms and don’t like eating in smoke, smoking was one of the first successful social engineering projects, unlike prohibition.

    I saw this ad this morning on CBS, and I wondered about the quick shot of Mr. Block smoking his cigarette; but you know, roughly 20% of Americans smoke despite the scare tactics by the CDC, FDA and Surgeon General, being banned from public venues and egregiously taxed.     I actuallly like the ad, and I like the fact that Mark Block takes a drag from a cigarette. The outrage people have shown over the smoking speaks volumes to me. Our rights (even to do harm to ourselves) are being taken away everyday. This ad says to me, “I’ll smoke if I want to”; this is America, the Land of the Free. Smoking, transfats, sugar….I once was a child who needed direction, now I am an adult who is capable of making my own choices. Hands off!

      Excellent way to slip the vote.. Why not just pull the obama lever because when morons as yourself write in a name, they are essentially giving the other side the vote.. You write in his name and I vote for the nominated one , guess what ? My vote gets cancelled out ,but if you vote for the nominated one then that is two votes towards our cause and AGAINST obama, which is the important thing.. Don’t be stupid, I know you want him but he isn’t going to get the nomination.. Sorry but that’s just the way it is..

    I am thinking that is the point to this ad as everyone has gotten so uptight in this Country.

      Edgy and/or subtle humor I think is best left to SNL and stand-up routines. For wider audiences the humor should be light and fairly obvious, broad humor leaving no room for misinterpretation. If people don‘t find the joke funny that is not as bad as them not knowing it’s a joke.

      I think the point was they want to bring back liberty and freedom to this country. I don’t smoke, but I know the persecution smokers go through these days. it‘s no one’s responsiblity but the smoker if they want to smoke or not. I frankly don’t care, as long as they don‘t smoke next to me when I’m trying to eat. If I happened to go to a bar (which I don’t) I would expect there to be smoker‘s there so I’d live with it. Freedom is the key.

      Rolling your own is huge right now, for very real economic reasons. Most of the state/local taxes levied on cigarettes is “per pack”. Even though the Obama tobacco tax did raise the cost of loose cigarette tobacco slightly, it is wildly cheaper to buy loose tobacco and roll your own.

      Even cheaper yet is to go back to smoking your grandpa’s pipe, as pipe tobaccos did not get the Obama tax hike. Two weeks worth of Prince Albert pipe tobacco cost about $25.

      Evidently Mr. Block is a “Frugal McDougal”

      Yeah, to me the image of him smoking a rolled cig gives him a lean and mean, scrapyard dog quality. Maybe he thinks that communicate to certain people a quality about Herman’s campaign: that it’s scrappy and not a pushover.

      It’s very very weird. Very counterintuitive for normal political campaigns. But maybe that’s the main message.

      I can tell you this, SNL is going to go wild mocking that ad. I would if I were them. I can think of a number of ideas already of things Block could be shown doing that are politically incorrect or gritty. But Maybe that will still work to his advantage.

    And he really should start telling people how his ‘opportunty zones’ will most likely be democrat strongholds becaue that‘s where most of the po’ inner city folk live. So he’ll be helping out the dems with his 999, building up their areas while giving no tax relief to republican areas.
    Oh, and if the Cain – Newt debate happens with no one else joining in, you know which one is going to be shredded to bits – and it aint Newt.
