Have You Seen the Viral Videos of the ‘Pint-Sized Preachers’ Yet?

National Geographics Pint Sized Preachers

Are you ready for National Geographic’s “Pint-Sized Preachers?” The new hour-long documentary explores the lives of three kid preachers who give their all to spread Jesus Christ’s message.

While some believe that these children are being exploited my overly fervent parents, others see them as a beacon of hope. This latter group believes that, despite their youth, God has chosen to speak through them.

The bizarre part (and there are some very intriguingly odd pieces to this puzzle)? One of the three — 4-year-old Kanon Tipton — is barely out of diapers, yet he delivers fiery sermons and inspires faith in those who listen. National Geographic describes him as follows:

Still only a pre-schooler, Kanon Tipton takes the pulpit at his family’s church and like a seasoned evangelist fervently preaches the gospel, mopping his forehead, shouting, waving his arms, the congregation hanging on his every word.

Below, watch a clip of young Kanon in action:

Kanon’s story is a peculiar one. He began preaching to his local Mississippi congregation when he was just 21 months old. After he was born, rather than driving him home, the first place his parents took him was to the church alter. While he’s strikingly young, Christian evangelizing does run in the family. Kanon’s father and both of his grandfathers are also Pentecostal preachers.

Below, watch the viral video that first made Kanon a sensation (and, if you’ve never seen a baby preach, you certainly won’t want to miss it):

The second child, Terry Durham, is a 12-years-old Baptist minister in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who began preaching when he was Kanon’s age. Surprisingly, Terry was licensed as a minister at the age of six — an astounding accomplishment. His grandmother, among others at his local church, call him a “miracle child” and his self-proclaimed nickname is “the little man of God.” National Geographic writes:

According to his own Web site Terry Durham has preached in 39 states and nine countries, and has plans for a “crusade” in Africa, Pakistan, Haiti, and Brazil.

Here’s a clip of young Terry in action:

Last, but certainly not least, comes Matheus Moraes, another 12-year-old preacher who was born in Rio de Janeiro “after his mother claimed she received a prophesy that she would have a son.” The young man officially became an evangelist in 2003 and by 2006 he had delivered more than 200 sermons.

I have seen worse from adult preachers. Been to those more upscale Baptist churches with lots of doctors, lawyers, and the higher ups in the town. The preacher give little happy feel good messages, does not preach on sin, does not want to convict anyone, or offend, just wants to keep the money coming in. No bus programs going into the projects or poor hoods. Churches dead as last years bird nest.

He even pretends to wipe away non-existent sweat from his brow. I’ll give him credit, he is really good at acting like his father.

Matthew 16: 4 An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign. I am no judge but to me this makes a mockery of the Gospel. God does listen to prayer and can heal someone, but if these preachers had the gift of healing as the apostles did they should able to fix an amputee! The fact is that we have the infallible word of God given to us in the scriptures, and should not need magic tricks to believe.

As a minister in a pentecostal denomination all I see is a small child that is mimicking what he has been exposed to. It’s not the Holy Spirit. Bombastic preaching is a tired hopelessly out of touch speaking style that is all to often falsely associated with the anointing of the holy spirit. This video is not cute. I find it to be rather sad and patronizing.

You know what’s worse than C&E Christians? All those Christians who sit in the pew every Sunday whooping, hollering and shouting amen, but they never get off their fat butts and do anything. They sit around proclaiming to be co-heirs with Christ and name and claim all the blessings for themselves they can imagine. They go back home, or back to their jobs and don’t do ANYTHING for the Kingdom of Christ. They are dead weight to the kingdom, and are nothing more than candy to the ears of a preacher.

Finally as a Pentecostal pastor I am absolutely fed up with the powerless Pentecost. Our churches are filled with people who can shout and yell and jump up and down while speaking in tongues, but they don’t have enough spiritual power to knock a rooster off the hen house. They claim to be baptized in the Holy Spirit yet they are among the most viscous gossips, back biters and liars the world has to offer. The end is drawing near people. God brings judgement to his own house first! How many people who fill our pews and shout amen will find themselves screaming “Lord Lord, do you not know me?”

I had a cousin’s son talk to him about some video game (been a few years so I don’t remember which one) and my son said, “Jesus like this game?” My cousin’s son said, “Probably not.” So my son came back with, “Satan does.” What a sermon in 6 words.

      @ Searching for Truth

Hate to break it to but I am a real pentecostal pastor. I just don’t wear rose colored glasses, or sugar coat the truth. Preachers who still revel in the bombastic preaching style do not reach or connect with today’s culture for Christ. Instead they are mocked. Those who are lost shut their ears to it. Our culture, our younger generation is desperately looking for somebody who can LIVE the bible, and speak the bible with conviction and love while they watch their kids play together in the yard or while they help them paint their house. The power of Pentecost was never intended to be flaunted tossed around the walls of a church.

The power of Pentecost was given to GO… to get off your butt and GO and touch the lives of the people in your neighborhood, your work, and your schools and to be a living active vessel for Christ to move through! So yes as a pentecostal pastor i can tell you that churches are FILLED with people who can rattle off some jibberish, call it tongues and their lives remain ineffectual, fruitless and powerless. That is NOT what the bible says follows truly “pentecostal” people. Sadly there are far too few people who speak in tongues in the privacy of their prayer closets, and then get up, go out, and actually do the work of Christ, binding up the broken hearted, healing the sick and delivering those stuck in bondage. THAT is the evidence of a truly “pentecostal” person.

      DEMONIC. DEMONIC. DEMONIC.
Nothing but another spirit and DEMONIC.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2: 8 & 9
No amount of tongues speaking will save you in this dispensation of grace. Only God can by the faith that he gives to you. Not by your faith that you exercise for yourself – for that would be by works – but by simply giving up trying. God has done it all for us. He wants us to tell him that. He wants us to stop our selfrighteous works for … “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” … (Isaiah 64:6). Christ died for us, he did the work for us. God washes us in his blood. We can do nothing to apprehend or attain that gift from God. If we work for it in the least bit, it’s no longer a gift. We have no faith, otherwise we could as Jesus said …”If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:20). We have hope, but no faith. We still use heavy equipment to move mountains. Otherwise God is a liar.

This child is not qualified or trained in any way to have the responsibility of preaching the True Word of God. This is more like a carnival show…and the congregation should object it as the mockery of which it is. What is the christian world coming to..teaching children the profession of priestcraft at such an early age. We know how most of the holy roller end up when they become famous aka Benny Hinn, John Hagee, Ted Haggard, Jimmy and Tammy Baker, Jimmy Swaggart and other like them. To preach or teach for gain might usually be associated with monetary gain, that gain might also be things such as respect, renown, popularity, or favors that motivate the teacher/preacher. Whenever a person receives gain for his service as a religious leader, he is in difficult territory, for it can compromise his humility and standing as a true servant of God. Of course, there are those who preach only for gain and don’t care about their standing before the Lord. I have to question the sincerity of any preacher himself or their young protege’s they set up to be like them, when I see them flaunt themselves to the world with there riches, personal body guards, fancy cars, bid gold crosses. People that engage in this type of set themselves up as the light of the world are in jeopardy of losing their humility opening themselves to the buffetings of Satan. Mathew 23:28 and Proverbs 11:2 comes to mind. Our true source of light comes from Christ who truth, which is given to each of us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. When scriptures tell us to “let our light shine”… it referring to Christ’s Light, not our own. I cannot see or feel the Light of Christ from such as these.

I beg to differ. Ever hear of a bar mitzvah ? you are a man at 13, considering you were an OLD man at 50 if you lived that long, people lived full lives much quicker back then. Only in the US are you still a child at 26.

That said, I find this both a wonder and creepy at the same time.
Certainly God can speak thru a child’s innocence, but I have to wonder why just in the evangelical “style”. RIngs of “Paper Moon” to me….

well said. I agree with your comments. I do not consider it preaching, just a young boy wanting to mimic a preacher. He might one day be called to preach, might be a mechanic.

Some folks on here pretty excited and against it. While I may not agree, it is much better than him watching rap music videos, and wanting to mimic a dope dealing, woman abusing, ghetto, gangster thug. AMEN, You are exactly right, children mimic their parents, in every household.
it is so Obvious to me that this child, Kanan, was raised in a “Pentecostal” Church environment. My son who is now 7 years old, was raised up in my Church, an independent “Baptist” environment, and he also praises Jesus, speaks of Jesus and prays, even witnessed to kids his age, However my son does not have the spirit of God dwelling in him, because he has not yet made a conscience decision to receive God’s Christ, Lord Jesus as his savior, but I know that he will soon.
So, First of all, for this child to be spirit filled (New Testament, age of grace), he would have to be “Born Again”, and he would have to of had a full and clear understanding of this Biblical truth, in order for him to make a conscience decision to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior and understand his need for Christ in his life.
Secondly, this thing about speaking in “tongues”,if its being taught in this church, then it is being done unbiblical, (and knowing much about the Pentecostals, it probably is) ! Also, know that the doctrine in Holy Scripture which addresses the speaking in tongues is clearly explained, and it is NOT a babbling or strange utterance, known as the ‘language of angels” spoken to God. Tongues in the book of Acts and Paul’s writings is always, ALWAYS, referring to KNOWN languages spoken at that time, were as the one speaking had no prior ability to do so, and there is always an inte

In the Bible, when someone spoke in tongues, they were speaking an actual language that they hadn’t learned. It would be like me, having never learned German, suddenly telling someone in German about God. It also doesn’t point to the person speaking, but points everyone to God. I have to admit, I’ve only attended one Pentacostal church meeting, and they spoke jibberish and called it speaking in tongues. They also believe that in order to prove your babtised in the Holy Spirit, you HAVE to speak in tongues (at least that’s what this one taught). That’s against the Bible, because each person has a different combination of gifts, not the same ones.

      @loriann12

Look out, you are about to open up a can of worms on here.

I have heard it both ways, but have to agree with you (to each his own though).

If not mistaken, after Peter and others spoke in tongues at Pentacost (and yes, folks heard the message in their own tongue) the only time you see people speaking in tongues is in the church at Corinth. If not mistaken, this is the church that gave Paul the most problems, and I believe he advised that they not speak in tongues.

Have to agree with you on what I have seen from the pentacostal crowd. Much grand standing, and “hey, look at me, I have the spirit”. Once again, to each his own. Lucky for us, we have a 1st Ammendment that lets us worship the way we like. Personally, I like a preacher that can really teach, and knows the word. Kind of hard to listen when you got folks running around hollering jiberish.

Well some of my previous post somehow got cut short. I continued to explain the teaching of tongues, speaking in tongues, is not a strange utterance, but rather a known language of the world. It is the ability of spirit filled believer to speak in a known language of which he otherwise had no prior ability to do so. Also, there will always, ALWAYS be an interpreter there also to interpret what is being said, so that those hearing can be edified, This clearly is taught in the Book of the Acts and through out Paul’s letters mostly the Corinthian books !
This also is a practice no longer needed in our day and times. The reason for speaking in another language (tongues) in the day of “Pentecost” ( which means 50), was due to the diversity of people there of other languages. The Book of the Acts is a transitional book, to wit, the beginning of the New Testament Church (Saved by grace, that is believing in the finished work of Christ) mustered in, as was according to the will of God the Father. Which began the Preaching of saved by grace through faith in Jesus, God’s Christ, for eternal life, being delivered from a devils Hell, with the filling of the Holy Spirit of God in the new “Born Again” believer. So there was a need which God had meet, for those early disciples & (Apostles,) of which there are none today), to speak in another languages for to reach the lost who were there with the “gospel message, to those who spoke in a diversity of other languages.

Demons speak in tongues, cause people to behave ecstatically and frantically, so such antics in themselves are no sign of the Holy Spirit. Jonathan Edwards wrote as much 350 years ago during the height of the Great Awakening, an awakening he had a great hand in getting started with his sermon “Sinners in the hands of an angry God”, a sermon which he delivered in a monotone and STILL had people moaning with fear.

The real anointing of the Spirit is seen through the subtler signs of humility, repentance. self-control, patience, etc.

So if they are coached. Better for them to be coached in the name of our Lord instead of the name of the devil.

but that kind of priestcraft is about monetary gain. Did you hear the boy? He talked about MONEY! This is corruption, plain and simple. Poor kid.

Cute. But I got to church to get meat. I do not want a feel good tingly sensation, I want to hear a theologically sound message. Is there a place for feel good? Sure. I just hope these kids are not upstaging the message. They are a diversion, entertainment. Could they be called by God to eventually be real preachers? I pray it is so. We are all ministers of the Word. I pray they develop the talent to preach to a congregation. Just not the the expense of the real sermon.

You nailed it trolltrainer. I echo those same thoughts. Going to church is about worshiping, praising, and learning more about Jesus…and how to apply it to our lives. Then go out and spread the gospel and make disciples. But all too often today, people think church is about getting all “gussied up”, driving up in their nicest car, and being entertained for a couple of hours, And like you said, it’s more about getting a tingle up their leg (aka; Feelgoodism). Getting full of the Holy Spirit is absolutely part of it, but there’s a fine line. I’ve attended several Pentecostal churches and some black churches, and sadly, “Feelgoodism” has taken place of sound Bible doctrine and deep Bible study. They should be eating meat, but they’re still drinking milk (strawberry or chocolate no less). I play in the praise band in my church and I‘m contantly having to remind the younger players why they’re up there. Some think it’s a showcase for them to overplay and draw attention to themselves. I take that priviledge of leading worship very seriously and try to show reverence to the Lord by leading and not “entertaining”. Church is about being fed meat…and subsequently feeding others the same.

I think we should be VERY careful and not be to quick to judge. I have mixed emotions concerning these children. God can certainly use whom he pleases and there are guidelines in His Word concerning this. I would like to remind of the pharisses. They had great bible knowledge, but used it wrongly. I believe many ADULT teachers in this day are doing far more harm than these children. I

    Creepy. This is child abuse.

Something tells me they haven’t “found God”.

So what’s your view then? That they used their life experience? All that pain and sacrifice of learning the hard way? Channeled their thoroughly developed critical thinking ability to come to God?

He should write an autobiography. “Today I had a poo. And found religion.”

I bet if this was a video of Muslim children you wouldn’t be so defensive toward it.

      1. God can use anyone to preach his messege.
      2. I’m not big on the whole screaming and yelling type preaching. It really distracts from the messege.
      3. If it were muslims kids they would be calling for the death of all infadels. Not really the same thing.

      N37bu6:
Check out the video of the Van Jones using 10 year olds to push the “Contract for the American Dream.” Also, I don’t know where the other video is of two children talking about how evil the TEA Party is over reducing the budget by saying they were trying to starve kids and old people. I am sure both were using their life experience as well.

yes God can call anyone, but that does not mean that all who claim it are called. I agree with the others that this is a distraction…these children are not old enough to feel the passion with which they are speaking, which to me means it is false…and I‘m pretty sure we’re not supposed to do that. Doesn‘t mean someone can’t be saved through these kids…even the worst people can be of assistance to the Lord
