‘Have You Stopped Beating Your Wife Yet?’ NBA Commish Lashes Out at Host for Asking if Draft Is Fixed

Things became heated during an interview on “The Jim Rome Show” after Rome decided to ask NBA commissioner David Stern a question regarding the league’s draft lottery.

“You know, New Orleans won the draft lottery,” Rome said, “I know that you appreciate a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy. Was the fix in for the lottery?”

Apparently, Stern didn’t appreciate Rome’s line of questioning and responded with Groucho Marx’s classic no-win question: “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?”

Needless to say, things didn’t go very well from there, as the two argued back and forth about the legitimacy of the question (the NBA does, after all, own the New Orleans Hornets).

“It was a marked difference from the pair‘s usual collegial attitude displayed on Stern’s regular appearances on the program,” writes Deadspin’s Timothy Burke.

“Obviously Stern’s referring to the loaded question fallacy and not actually implying Rome is a domestic abuser, but would Rome’s audience get the philosophy class reference?” asks Burke.

And to be fair, as Burke notes, Rome didn’t actually ask a loaded question. He asked if  and not when the lottery had been fixed. There is a difference.

Still, despite the fact that the interview is pretty awkward, we have to admit that we laughed. Not because Rome has the type of personality that practically begs to be asked trick questions, but because the interview reminds us of this.

Hmmm…Unfortunately I believe Rome as the Western Conference Finals defied all logic. Watching those games live and the phantom calls and no calls…no team can win 5 on 8. A team with a 20 game winning streak loses 4 in a row??? NBA wanted to ensure LeBron had his title!

Every time I watch an NBA playoff series I go away with the same feeling …. its all fixed. The NBA is no better than watching wrestling on TV. Ever since the Sacramento Kings got screwed the word has been out on Stein and all of his ilk. Now I only watch the NFL

White blaze posters say nobody cares about the NBA. Look at the game 1 rating and tell me nobody cares. 11.6 rating.

Compare this to the NHL, a white dominated league that white racist blaze posters probably watch more, it got a 4.0 rating.

the kia nba pregame show got a 4.6. A pregame show beat the nhl final game 6.

Stern needs to be hazed after he made sure the Lakers wouldn’t be in the Finals by nixing the Chris Paul trade, yet allowed Miami and Boston to stockpile 3 superstars.

NBA isnt what it used to be. They stopped following rules like traveling (I see it on just about every play) and they give their star players special treatment on the court. The Republican party has had the same problems – forgotten about the constitution for far too long and our country has suffered.

David the dictator Stern is a complete jackass. If he didn’t fix the lottery, why would he act like a teenage bully on a national radio show? Jim was giving him the opportunity to clear the air and simply say “No, it is not fixed, that’s absurd.” That’s it, then move on. Instead David the dictator acted like an idiot like he did when he 86ed the Chris Paul trade, fixed the Ewing trade, tried to get professional adult basketball players to play with a rubber basketball, implement the WNBA that no one watches, and now give the NBA’s team the lottery pick.

Whats next Dave, you going to have a ref fix the calls of a game? Oh wait that happened. What if we ask you about it, are u going ask us if we abuse our children?

For those here asking who watchs B-Ball, I do! I hope the Thunder knocks the snot out of the Heat. What should I watch instead, the primetime soap Dallas? Stern is going senile, and I don’t have time for sports talk shows. I already spend way too much time on the computer and watching news, and doing school work. Some B-Ball, or Hockey, or football is a good break from wanting to pull my hair out, and with the exception of Barkley and Van Gundy the lib and racist talk is kept to a minimum.

Jim Rome is highly respectable in the biz. It wasn’t like Rome tossed the question at Stern like a wet fish or anything. Stern became salty afterwards, but his response has usually been something of the effect of “That’s nonsense, of course not.”. But today, you’d think somebody gave him a wedgie and lit a stink bomb underneath him. Very condescending today, Mr. Stern was…

What is happening to men accused of domestic violence is no joke. The radical feminist, Obama administration works overtime to drive dads from their kids lives then hypocritically pretends it cares about fatherhood and families.

Marxist-Leninism has historically supported the break up of traditional families, with the driving out of dads as its primary goal. Joe Biden‘s Violence Against Women Act has been one of the main weapons in the Obama administration’s misandrist war on males, touting a fraudulent gender based violence scam as its primary justification. If Obama really cares about dads, the first thing he should do is stop “Witch-Hunting Males” as shown in the video of the same name at Youtube. http://tinyurl.com/65dpzwu Destruction of men, families, children and yes women through the Obama administration’s war on traditional families (using domestic violence law as cover) is no joke.

      @ Conservativeslie:

It’s clear it’s you are the one who needs to “get a grip.” The Democrat party is a multi-tentacled hate movement that has metastasized into many areas with cancerous evils (policies and laws), especially under Obama. You obviously don’t like to hear the truth and try to dismiss it with an impertinent (and very ignorant) tack, but just because you can’t handle the truth doesn’t make it any less true.

Peddle your low I.Q., leftist drivel to your usual audience of the addled – Democrats. They’re to brainwashed to think and to dimwitted to care. :-/

      Ray-

I can’t handle the truth? Ray it is what you perceive as truth that is the problem. Your paranoia and tin foil hat thinking is actually what is wrong in this country today. The extreme amount of misplaced polarity of our political parties prevents any policy from moving forward. So go ahead and keep buying into this Fox News created drivel and let the country become less functional everyday.

Yeah get a grip (and possibly some medication) Ray!

@ liberalliar – also known as the fraudulently titled, conservativeslie:

Peddle your disingenuous Marxist agenda somewhere else. We factually informed conservatives, and many in the general population, are onto the lazy, crazy, freeloading Democrat scams.

Your reference to a “tin foil hat” is obviously a Freudian projection from your extensive use of one. You and Obama’s psycho leftist agenda has America on the fast track to ruination. Americans don’t need any more “medications” to help tear down this country. Clear minded, rationale thought like that in the conservative camp is what’s needed – not more drug addled, tin foil hat, psycho Democrat delusions like those spawned in the 1960s and promoted by Marxist-Leninist Democrat losers to this day.

The last team to win the lottery in the NBA while having the 4th best odds (same as the Hornets did in this draft) was the Spurs and you ended up picking David Robinson. Was it a conspiracy then? Was it a conspiracy that the Cavaliers won the lottery the year after Lebron James left? David Stern was just tired of the constant insistence that the lottery is fixed. Jim Rome got what he deserved.
