Hawaii Teacher Allegedly Hits Student in Head With Hammer (Content Warning)

A Honolulu teacher has been put on Administrative leave this week pending an investigation into allegations he hit one of his students in the head with a hammer. The injury suffered by the student included a two-inch gash on his head that required multiple staples:
KITV reports:
The incident happened at a Kailua High School wood shop class.
“I was told there had been an accident and a hammer had hit my son in the head. When I got the call from my wife — I’m thinking the kids had been clowning around in the classroom,” said [the boy's father Tim] Bitanga.
After the shock of seeing their son’s injury, the Bitangas were in for another shock. It wasn’t another student throwing things around, they were told — it was the teacher.
“I was definitely pissed off like most parents would be, to find out it was the teacher that had done it. You wouldn’t expect that to happen in the high school setting,” said Bitanga.
According to the Kailua High School principal, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave while the school investigates what happened in the classroom.
But as upset as the Bitangas were over their son being injured, they were also disappointed in the way the school handled the entire incident.
Bitanga said their son was kept at the health room for hours until they took him to the emergency room. “This was a head injury, there was blood all over the place. I would have liked to see an ambulance involved,” said Bitanga.
The teen’s parents would like to see changes to the way the school responds during an emergency.

We have not heard the teacher’s side.
The father did not say what the son told him as why the teacher hit him in the head.
Possibilities are. the kid was un-ruly and threathened the teacher.The teacher hated the kid for no reason and just wanted to show how much he hated the teen. The teacher came onto the teen and got rebuffed and maybe told his friends who then made fun of the teacher.
He refused to pay attention/follow instructions and the teacher lost it and hit/hurled a hammer at him, in which case the teacher should have been fired immeiately. probably cant. Union thingy ya know.
The school hired a deranged person as a teacher.
We need more info on this incident from both parties involved.

…BUT, according to the pubic-sector union’s collective bargaining agreement, the teacher will receive a BONUS increase in his taxpayer-funded GOLD-PLATED BENEFITS and HUMONGOUS PENSION for the “mental anguish” he suffered while whacking the student with a hammer.
AND, the student’s parents will have to buy him a new hammer.

All kidding aside the one thing I didn’t see was the parents asking what their kid may have done to provoke the response from the teacher.
Remember the days when your parents would kick your butt up and down the street if you got disciplined in school and they found out about it? I’m not saying we should encourage our kids being hit by teachers but some personal responsibility would be a change.

The only acceptable situation would be the child actively using deadly force with a weapon to attack the teacher or other students. And unless that was the situation, the teacher should be arrested, charged & prosecuted. If the student was misbehaving – talking in class, mouthing off to the teacher, disturbing other students etc – he should be punished accordingly.

I can‘t tell from the details if this was an accident or deliberate on the teacher’s part. The teacher should be jailed until the details come out.

With a blow like that to the head (if the picture is of that particular teen’s injury and not a file picture), he could have gone into a coma. Were they trying to get in touch with the parents or their lawyers? Head wounds, especially gashes like that bleed alot. What were they thinking?

If the teacher did this, and with malice, then let them face a judge and jury for their fate to be decided in accordanced to the law; If it was an accident and the teacher did it, then at the least their job is to be forfeit.
The everloving unions need to stay out of the matter.

If an employee done something like that in the private sector they would be fired instantly. I would like to hear the teachers side of the story but given the information I have been able to get this is ridiculous. When you send your children off to school you have a reasonable expectation of them arriving back home in the same shape you sent them. Yes accidents happen but by a teacher, the school will end up paying dearly for this one.

Then they needed to look up the emergency number in the yellow pages.
Why all this animosity toward unions? The union teacher was trying to deliver a lesson to the errant youth. Actually the youth was pretty lucky. The second half of the lesson included a demonstration of the sickle.

The school should be investigating the ability for the teacher to be employed and that’s it. If I were the parent of this kid I would be pushing for this teacher to be arrested and booked on felony charges. What gives? Maybe there is some of the story missing like the kid took after the teacher and he was defending himself, don’t know but sounds like the police should have been involved right away no matter what.
