The debate has been raging for months and months, but legislators in Hawaii — the state at the center of the controversy surrounding the birth record of America’s 44th president — are taking a new entrepreneurial track in their latest attempt to end the dispute.

A new bill introduced in the state legislature would make President Barack Obama’s birth records available for anyone who wants to see them — if they are willing to pay the fee.

In exchange for a $100, the bill’s supporters hope access to the documents will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere.  The Associated Press reports:

The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member.  The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House’s Democratic leadership and committee chairmen.

The idea behind the measure is to end skepticism over Obama’s birthplace while raising a little money for a government with a projected budget deficit exceeding $800 million over the next two years.

“If it passes, it will calm the birthers down,” said the bill’s primary sponsor, Rep. Rida Cabanilla. “All these people are still doubting it because they don’t want the birth certificate from Obama. They want it from our state office.” …

The new legislation to release records may run into similar legal problems because of Hawaii’s strong constitutional privacy protections, said Rep. John Mizuno, a co-sponsor of the bill.

“If people really want to confirm Barack Obama is born in Hawaii, that’s fine,” Mizuno said. “I don’t have a problem with looking at innovative ways to bring revenue to the state. The taxpayers deserve a break.”

The $100 fee would help offset the extra work by state employees who handle frequent phone calls and e-mails from people who believe Obama was born elsewhere, Cabanilla said.

But the number of birther requests has been declining from the 10 to 20 weekly inquiries received early last year, according to the Department of Health.

“Requests have decreased significantly over the years. Currently we receive anywhere from zero to five per week,” said department spokeswoman Janice Okubo.

The Health Department is still reviewing the bill, Okubo said.

House Health Committee Chairman Ryan Yamane didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment on whether he would hold a hearing on the bill.

Also, Gov. Abercrombie has said these records are private and making them public would violate Obama’s right to privacy.  Why would it be okay to legislate away a single person’s right to privacy?

    It’s amazing that so many on the left are sudden clamoring for his birth certificate. I have no doubt that a certificate will emerge at a most convenient time for Obama.
    At this point, how can it matter that much except for Obama’s benefit?

    Hmmm, I don’t really think that you can charge a fee to view something that is SUPPOSED to be public record, I know they charge for copies of public records. I don’t know exactly what Obammy is trying to hide but why exactly would you spend some ungodly amount of money to keep something as inconsequintial as a birth certificate and school grades and transcipts from public knowledge?

    Glenn Beck claims the Constitution is important. Why does he continually dodge this issue, probably the most important matter right now as far as the Constitution is concerned? The president has to be a loyal American and this is why there is a Constitutional limit upon who can hold that office. There is no proof Obama can qualify. He must resign. Mr. Beck, you either care about the Constitution or you do not. Which is it??

    Cheezwhiz, the answer to what has changed………………….the birth certificate. Or did it? I have to wonder how many years before the truth is revealed one way or another. As far as the state of Hawaii charging to see it, that is just ridiculous. Didn’t the govenor of Hawaii have one drawn up because there was no public record found at any hospital in that area? So why would anyone but a fool pay to see it in the first place?

    Seems like his mom was leaving country and was mad she had to give up her citizenship or just leave but she had to leave but she would be back.. Not positive been awhile…
    Well if he is illegal President would explain alot even why he would make illegals paperwork non important and to get all the benefits he has let happen for them. I still think knowing the mom’s story could determine alot. Too many missing links.

    Cheezwhiz, what changed? answer………….the document. I have never been a birther but lately some of the statements coming out of Hawaii are getting more and more strange. However, I am still on the fence. I can not believe that the state of hawaii is considering a charge to see this birth certificate. Or is it a real birth certificate? I wonder how many years it will take to find out the truth one way or another. The mystery continues.

    This is absolutely the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of in my life.
    Why on earth should the Truth be available only to those who have 100.00 they can or are willing to spend on something all American citizens have?
    I guess if I get stopped by the police and asked for my driver’s license, I’ll ask for a 100.00 to show it….I wonder if that will fly?
    I thought all these progressives thought that wealth should be redistributed equally……..maybe Truth not so much.
    Still, how does this explain away the Natural Born Citizen issue…or the Connecticut SS#…..

    Someone said on internet he wasn’t born in regular hosital and no medical person signed off on it. That noone actually wittness the birth. So what good is his birth certificate. Noone seen him born? Democrates just need to throw another party for the pres so of course turn to the hard working Americans to raise the money. I believe the well is dry.

    Look, Barack Obama‘s mom was an American citizen so it doesn’t matter to me where he was born – he’s an American citizen. I’m more concerned by children who are born on American soil and are considered to be “citizens” when neither parent is an American citizen. That‘s this Country’s real problem.

    However, I think that Barack Obama should just show his birth certificate with the Doctor’s signature on it just to stop all this nonsense. Obama has proven himself to be “unqualified” to be President in so many other ways. Does anyone in their right mind believe that Obama has become “Reganisque”? He’s still the far-left Socialist who will continue to have Big Government take over every aspect of our lives if he is reelected in 2012. Save the USA – don’t vote for Obama in 2012!

    You know..if this was an issue with me, and I was in office. There would be a barrage of people to vouche for me.The next door neighbor that changed my diapers, the staff at the hospital, the woman that babysat my brother while my mom was giving birth to me…etc…and I am 51 yrs old.Hear a thing from those about Obummer? Other than his neighbors and childhood friends in Indonesia where he attended a Muslim school…not so much.

Funny no one remember him in any college he is supposed to have attended except his first year at Occadental where they thought him and his rich prince were lovers. No one remembers him after that. No exgirlfriends. No friends period. Nothing until he started community organizing.

    Although I would not consider myself a “birther”, after all the questionable “live birth” information and the failure to provide the “long form birth certificate” to meet qualifications and the recent news I have to admit… I‘m now wondering if there isn’t something to this. ANY American citizen can show a birth certificate and if lost can request a replacement. So, now I have to wonder why the president of the United States cannot provide a simple piece of paper to make the question go away.

    Generally when proof is not/cannot be provided then the GUILT is without doubt. I’m wondering if this president was elected while not qualifying and now as it would be a great embarrassment to this country the FEDS are covering it up. Come 2012 he better be prepared to show the REAL birth certificate or it will be the end of progressive liberal reign.

      Amazing…simply amazing. The more the President stonewalls on this, the greater the interest becomes. The reason that the number of calls has dropped from 10-20/week down to 0-5/week, is because more and more people have become convinced that Hawaii does not have a full birth certificate for B.O. Even if he released the full, long form notarized certificate tomorrow in triplicate with the original footprints intact, I’m not sure I would believe it at this point. Too much work has gone into stonewalling.

      B.O. is going to be remembered as the bowing President without a birth certificate, Now, isn’t that just so special?

      I was just going to say that… I hope at least half the states pass that eligibility law for 2012 b/c Barry Dunham, Soetoro, Obama or whatever his name is will be screwed.

      Let me guess they will want at least 5-6 figures to show it and it will be in a dark room with SEIU, AFL-CIO, Soros Org, and the rest of the Alphabet Organized Crime Families goons supervising the viewing where it will be a quick flash of “here” then its taken away!

      They will do anything for revenue here in Hawaii. The Democrats have run this state for over 40 years and the result is not pretty.       Just take a trip to Ripley’s Believe It or Not in St Augustine, FL and you will find things more believable than what Hawaii is trying to pass off as BO’s birth certificate. It does cost a good deal of money to have a document done well, hence the admission fee.
