‘He Always Had a Smile’: Names of Victims Emerge in ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Shooting

AURORA, Colo. (AP) — Ashley Moser drifted in and out of consciousness in the ICU, bullets lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen. In her waking moments, she called for her 6-year-old daughter Veronica.

Nobody had the heart to tell the 25-year-old mother that Veronica was already dead, the youngest victim killed at a Colorado movie theater in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

“All she’s asking about, of course, is her daughter,” said Ashley Moser’s aunt Annie Dalton. “She was a vibrant 6-year-old. She was excited, she’d just learned how to swim. She was a great little girl, excited about life – she should be at 6 years old.”

A sports blogger who recently wrote about surviving a shooting in Canada, a man preparing to celebrate his first wedding anniversary, and a young woman were all among the 12 people killed when a gunman barged into a crowded Colorado theater, set off gas canisters and opened fire as spectators dove for cover. Dozens of others were injured, including 11 in critical condition.

On Saturday, Colorado authorities released the names of those killed– eight men, three women and six-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan. The oldest victim was 51-year-old Gordon Cowden.

All died of gunshot wounds, according to the release by the Arapahoe County coroner’s office.

For Alex Sullivan, it was to be a weekend of fun: He planned to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at a special midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

“He was a very, very good young man,” said Sullivan’s uncle, Joe Loewenguth. “He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart.”

Micayla Medek, 23, was also among the dead, her father’s cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press.

“I hope this evil act … doesn‘t shake people’s faith in God,” she said.

A blogger who recently wrote of surviving a Toronto shooting was also among those killed, the woman’s brother said.

The death of Jessica Ghawi, who was also known as Jessica Redfield, was a “complete and utter shock,” said her brother, Jordan Ghawi.

He has been using his blog and Twitter account to update what he knew about his sister’s condition throughout the day. He also appeared on the NBC “Today” show.

Jordan Ghawi said on his website that a man who was with his sister at the theater described the chaos, saying he and Jessica Ghawi dropped to take cover when the gunman first started shooting. Jessica Ghawi was shot in the leg, her brother wrote, describing details relayed to him by a man identified on the blog only as a mutual friend named Brent.

Jessica Ghawi began screaming when she was shot, and the friend tried to calm her and stop the bleeding, according to Jordan Ghawi.

The man was then shot, but he continued attending to Jessica Ghawi’s wound before he realized she had stopped screaming, Jordan Ghawi stated. The man said she had been shot in the head.

Jordan Ghawi said the friend escaped the theater after being shot twice, but he was expected to survive. Jordan Ghawi praised the man, saying his “actions are nothing but heroic.”

Jessica Ghawi, 24, moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago and friends and colleagues described her as outgoing, smart and witty.

“She was always kind of a sponge as far as how she could be an even better journalist and sports broadcaster,” said Peter Burns, a radio sports show host with Mile High Sports Radio in Denver, where Ghawi recently interned.

Jessica Ghawi Colorado shooting

Jessica Ghawi

Ghawi blogged at length about surviving the Eaton Centre mall shooting in Toronto that killed two people and sent several others to the hospital. Burns and his girlfriend, Lauren Anuskewicz, both said the blog reflected everything she told them.

“She was like, `You guys would never believe what happened,’” Anuskewicz said.

Jessica Ghawi wrote of the Toronto shooting: “I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders’ faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don’t know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath.”

Anuskewicz said Jessica Ghawi had been in Toronto visiting a boyfriend and “it obviously was a very scary situation.”

“And to be just so close to it,” she added. “It’s just impossible to imagine that not even a month and a half later this would happen, and she would be involved. It’s just awful.”

Yet, Burns said, Jessica Ghawi seemed more enlivened than intimidated by surviving that shooting.

“After the Toronto incident, I think she even looked at that like, `Hey, even after that, I’m able to pursue my dream,’” he said.

Burns said he was close to her family. He moved to Denver from Texas a few years ago and talked with Jessica Ghawi about establishing a sports radio career there, he said.

Former colleague Mike Taylor, a sports host at KTKR-AM in San Antonio described how she reluctantly changed her name for her career, taking the name “Redfield” as a play on her red hair because it was easier to say than her given name.

Jessica Ghawi was a prolific social media user under the new name. Her last tweet stated in all capital letters, “movie doesn’t start for 20 minutes.”

On Saturday morning, parents of John Larimer released a statement that Navy officials notified them about midnight that their 27-year-old son was one of the 12 killed.

The family said that Larimer’s brother is working with the Navy to take his body home to Crystal Lake, Ill. He was with a unit that belongs to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. Tenth Fleet at Buckley Air Force.

An Air Force reservist who worked at Buckley also was among the victims killed. Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, was a cyber-systems operator, the Air Force said in a statement. Another reservist was treated and released after also being wounded in the shootings.

The other victims were Alexander J. Boik, Jonathan T. Blunk, Rebecca Ann Wingo and Alexander C. Teves, according to the coroner’s office.

Aurora, Colorado: Home of Buckley Air Force Base. The targeted movie theater, Century Cinema 16, is in front of the Aurora Town Center. My main concern is that nobody, and I mean not even “The Blaze”, nor Glenn Beck are talking about the fact that this place would be the main place that military personnel coming out of that Airbase would go to see a movie. If you check the demographics of the people who died or were injured in the shooting, you will realize the amount of military personnel or military families involved in the shooting is higher than their proportional representation in the general population. Anyway, just a thought. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

Nope, you’ve pretty much said it all. Not many military personnel will be armed off duty to begin with. And that fact of the matter is, MSM will always look the other way when the Military is involved, unless it’s something the military is directly involved with and “on the wrong side” of things. But I’m not sure Beck and the Blaze are aware of the area in particular, so I really can’t speak for them per se…

Since my family is no longer involved with daily ongoings in the Military , I wonder if these families involved were informed to be vigilant at all times, considering what’s been going on with public unrest and the sort as of late? It used to be when you were overseas, they’d inform you to be on the look out for anything strange or odd people walking around. But nobody would expect having to do likewise state side . You’re more likely to drop your guard around familiar settings…

A christian? From where you got that? My bet is that he’s an atheist, through and through. That is not to say atheists are necessarily more violent. Just that deep psychological problems + atheism can be a dangerous mix, as there are no boundaries delineating concepts like sanctity of life.

Just because he comes from a mostly Christian country does not make him a Christian. Timothy McVeigh was an atheist (NOT A CHRISTIAN). But you will hear the government-run-liberal-media making that assumption mostly when they are trying to defend radical Islam or betray their Christian roots.

Why do you say he was Christian? Because he was white? Because he showed up in a church once? He could have been scoping that church out for a possible attack for all you know. In the meantime, what he said or says isn’t important, but what Christ says. Jesus said his followers would be known by their love, or their fruit (love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, goodness and self control? Did James Holmes show any of these characteristics?

Maybe not mass murders, but Christians (non-conforming/ non-practicing types….) have been involved with serial killings in the past. Example, BTK was an Evangelical…

But that has nothing to do with this guy, his religion has nothing to do with his mindset or ideology. ANd if this guy was in fact, a member of Black Bloc, just remember who touted Occupy and called them “peaceful”. Everything about him spells out Black Bloc…

The point is that “Christian” isn‘t something that is true just because that’s how you label yourself. Just because you go to church doesn’t make you a Christian either. Christianity is a state of being, and anyone who would commit an act like this has abandoned Christ and is not a Christian.

All Theaters MUST be required to install devices on Emergency Exit Doors that do not permit the doors to remain open. A LOUD ALARM must SOUND if the door REMAINS UNLOCKED FOR LONGER THAN A PRESET TIME.

Further Security is required to deter a person from inside a theater opening a FIRE EXIT DOOR to allow one or many possibly armed accomplices to enter the theater.
Devices are available with a 15 or 30 second delay before the door will open after the bar has been pressed and initiates a warning alert that the bar has been pushed.

Such devices may have thwarted this killer or at least reduced the advantage he had by entering a dark theater from the outside after leaving the door open earlier.

Until changes are made, theater-goers should be alert to anyone that goes near exit door even before a show or film starts and if they see one that is unlocked they should alert management immediately.

When something like this happens the police and prosecuters have to make sure that every i is dotted and every t is crossed. If they mess up then a mass murderer could walk free on a technicality. The defense lawyer will also plead the case to be moved to a different location on the grounds that the defendant will not get a fair trial in the town/city in which the tragedy occured. All of these motions will take time.

TommyG524: Wall Street didn’t make both parents work. Liberal feminism created a “low class” for
women who stayed home raising children (the most important job in the world) That made them feel
less than those who worked outside home. Everyone working created more money and an ability for
a much higher standard of living. A result being many of our exceptional teachers took other jobs). Coupled with the want factor and the ability to use credit (not the responsibility) created the “bigger and better” goals. Then at the same time we had Big Gov growing programs discrediting the males in families and ultimately breaking down the black family (70% out of wedlock births or higher). The rest of the population is now closely catching up on out of wedlock births. There is a reason for family. Our high school homecoming queen ran as mother of 2 and proud of it. When I called school principal and district office questioning that children needed role models they said, “There is nothing we can do, it would be the same case if she were a lesbian.”
When a society has no boundaries, no moral guidelines, no mores of mutually good (all coming from
a true biblically based set of commandments) – Anything and everything is good and accepted. Now there is a continual onslaught of discrediting the Bible. Our founders said as long as we were a moral society, our Republic would survive.
My opinion is, we at testing that one! Thank you blaze for reporting what others

More validation for women who choose to stay home with their children would definitely help to bring the tradition back to being the norm. I think women began to feel ostracized for staying at home. I can’t for the life of me understand how raising children is not seen as work. It most definitely is the most important job of them all.

My wife brought her business into a home office so that she could be with our children. There are ways of keeping cash flow into the household and still be a mom. If that is not possible, then there has to be changes in lifestyle. The studies are very clear that children are much less likely to have problems as adults if both parents are present and involved. I wonder what America is going to look like in another 20 years with the rampant unwed births and the lack of both parents being present in the children lives.

If just one person had been killed it would have barely made the news. Now all of the professional victims will want to turn the movie complex into a memorial. And every year they will hold candlelight vigils. If the studio ever makes another Batman movie the news will be full of recaps about the shooting.

The anti-gun nuts will renew their calls to ban guns. The pro-gun nuts will resist. If any criminal wants a gun all he has to do is take one from a cop or burglarize a couple of random houses.

Colorado has the death penalty, Charge the guy with numerous counts of first degree murder, convict and execute him by the end of the year and stop whining like a bunch of babies.

Jessic’s powerful words after Toronto are meant for us.
    We are heartbroken, sad…angry.
Did the chaos/ stirring in the world spur this madman on?
Terrorists will learn from him… we know soft targets are very hard to protect.
Do whatever you can to protect your family and loved ones as most are predicting more of this and who knows where?
These people had no idea their lives were about to end.
Try not to be caught in a sitting duck situation because those who commit these acts seem to use that for maximum effect.
To be afraid to go the movies or fly etc. is a win for terrorism.. to die by a madman’s/terrorists act is a
    win for them too.
Re-read the book on being a survivor..
Be prepared. Newsmax recommended carrying tight swim goggles, a bandana, and a sm. bottle of cider vinegar in a small plastcic bag.. which would help greatly in an incident involving tear gas.. This might be something to consider when you are going to a big event or somewhere that may be an enticing soft target for terrorists.. where there are lots of people. Can’t hurt
    Pray
    Pray
    Pray
Be thankful for whatever we have because we have our lives.
Live in the moment.. cherish each day…because, like Jessica, we are reminded of life’s unpredictable

Both sides need to stop politicizing this and other cases for political gain! We have moved from a society of laws and order to a society of who can gain the most political points through corruption and misrepresenting the truth.

“….but hey, lets blame it on the left.”

I do. Think 50′s. A man in the family going to work, while the wife staying home and caring for kids… And being able to afford it. What happened? A large inflation of workforce, with women entering into it in droves, prompted by feminism, which is one of the tools of leftist political toolset.

The increase in the workforce figures forced a downward trend on wages and an upward trend on inflation during the 60‘s and mainly 70’s. There was no corporate conspiracy, just the need to deal with economic facts on hand, and because the process was rather gradual, it did not light a lot of light bulbs.

But the fact is that leftists think tanks, like Frankfurt School, were aware of this forcing because it was their brain “child”, they had planned to introduce it and as far as history is concerned, did so successfully. The main reason behind it was to reduce the middle class, introduce a mild economic hardship with gradual increase trending, to create a degree of dependency–in the long term to eliminate the middle class they viscerally hated despite most of them being from it, to exchange any vestiges of individual freedom for institutionalized state “security”.

As the corporations go, some of the largest figured out that socialism may work in their favor–by supporting the left (Dems) they get in return conditions of virtual monopoly, or at least a form of “protection”.
