‘He Enjoyed Booze, Guns, Cars, and Younger Women Until the Day He Died’: Unrepentant Obituary Deemed ‘Best Ever’

Michael “Flathead” Blanchard’s obituary, published in the Denver Post on April 12, bears little resemblance to the standard “in memoriam.”

Penned by Blanchard before his death, the obituary notes, among other things, that Blanchard was “weary of reading obituaries noting someone’s courageous battle with death.”  Rather, he wanted it known that he “died as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctor’s orders and raising hell for more than six decades.”

“He enjoyed booze, guns, cars, and younger women until the day he died.”

He Enjoyed Booze, Guns, Cars, and Younger Women Until the Day He Died: Unrepentant Obituary Deemed Best Ever

After noting all those who preceded him in his death, the obituary continues: “So many of his childhood friends that weren’t killed in Vietnam went on to become criminals, prostitutes and/or Democrats.”

“He asks that you stop by and re-tell the stories he can no longer tell. As the Celebration will contain Adult material we respectfully ask that no children under 18 attend.”

Some are calling it “the best obit ever,” while others are saying, “I think he would have despised me, but that ROCKS!”

“RIP brother,” another commented.

The Denver Post published the article on Facebook, where hundreds have chimed in.  Some dismay Blanchard’s political opinions, but most look past it.

“Yeah Michael, I’m a Vietnam Veteran too and a lifelong liberal Democrat. If we had met in a bar and had a few beers, we could have had a punch out….or, we might have broken out laughing. Go in peace brother…”

    Edmund Vance Cooke laid more elegance at the feel of men like Mike “Flathad” than I could hope to, so here it is -

    Did you tackle that trouble that came your way
    With a resolute heart and cheerful?
    Or hide your face from the light of day
    With a craven soul and fearful?
    Oh, a trouble’s a ton, or a trouble’s an ounce,
    Or a trouble is what you make it,
    And it isn‘t the fact that you’re hurt that counts,
    But only how did you take it?

    You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what’s that?
    Come up with a smiling face.
    It’s nothing against you to fall down flat,
    But to lie there — that’s disgrace.
    The harder you’re thrown, why the higher you bounce;
    Be proud of your blackened eye!
    It isn‘t the fact that you’re licked that counts,
    It’s how did you fight — and why?

    And though you be done to the death, what then?
    If you battled the best you could,
    If you played your part in the world of men,
    Why, the Critic will call it good.
    Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce,
    And whether he’s slow or spry,
    It isn‘t the fact that you’re dead that counts,
    But only how did you die?
    ~~~
    Open roads and safe travels, brother
Solution—-Obama Care, and the death panels so they can kill of the baby boom generation early to save money….
      God comments can be non appliable to many people. God loves and died for those who he knew before the foundation of the world to be his bride, his people. God prepared things for those who love him. Though there is a scripture that says, “for God so loved the world”, that does not mean that he loves evil people for he has said, “Jacob I loved and Esau I have hated”. He even rains blessings on the unrighteous as well as the righteous. The unrighteous go on in life to fulfill destiny in a way they do not realize. Once a person is dead, it is too late to pray for the soul of anybody. They made their choice in life.
      People want to paint this unrealistic mamby pamby picture of God that he loves everybody and that a person can continue living like the devil his whole life and that God will love them. That is not simply true. God has to even issue the spirit of repentance to a person so that they can even come to repetance. It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance. So, when people say that God loves an evil person, they simply do not know what they are talking about. You have to know God for a very long time to even begin to know the mind of the Lord. He does not think like man and his ways are not our ways. There are the the sons of God and then there are the wicked seed, the tares. God did not die for the tares, he died for His People, those who are His.
      1Corinthian 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of heaven? Neither fornicators ( those having sex outside the confines of marriage) nor adulterers,nor homosexuals, nor idolaters,nor sodomites..nor thieves..nor covetous, nor extortioners, nor drunkards will inherit the kingdom of God..and such were some of you..but you were washed..but you were sanctified..but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor 6:16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For the two ,He says shall become one flesh 17 but he who is joined to the Lord is one Spirit with Him.
      It is thought by many partiers that hell will be one big party…It is not. It is my understanding that one will be all alone there separated from God..with the torment of knowing that they will stand before Jesus/Yeshua at the Great White Throne Judgement.. So you might be having your buddies back..but for what?
      Yeah, he was salty, but he was a defender of “those who could not defend themselves”. I think many will be surprised who they meet up with in Heaven and, in the case of our friend Flathead here, the process of how they ended up there instead of elsewhere. Plus, I’m sure there are heaven-points for going out with style.
      Don’t doubt the power of God, and don’t ever try to limit his love to only those you agree with. To do so is to declare yourself wiser than God, and that usually doesn’t end up working out too well.
I have nothing against anyone.. why would I have anything against this man?..but God does command to love even our enemies.. it is a hard thing to forgive ones enemies..but I would never hold anything against someone simply because they chose to live life their own way..Rather I am concerned for them out of love..What they choose to do..is allowed because God gives us free will..     Most will think Mr. Blanchard a rebel, something they deem as “cool”. But the truth is that there is nothing rebellious about living life after the things of the flesh that the entire world chases after. The REAL rebel stands for Jesus Christ and the fruits of the spirit. Because of this, they will be disliked, sometimes hated, and always villified & ridiculed. Perhaps Mr. Blanchard knew the Lord, only God can judge his heart, but we can judge his words and I fear for his lack of wisdom and repentence. The Obit will no doubt appeal to the lost, but the saved know that Mr. Blanchard is now on his knees before his righteous judge, and cutting a cool promo for the local newspaper is no longer the issue at hand. The question is now… “What have you done with Jesus Christ”? Eternity is FOREVER, such a shame to live selfishly for such a short finite ride.
    John 14:6- Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
    Mark 8:36- “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
    John 3:16- “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
      Well said. The world hears the gospel or at least questions life in general and we all make choices. Just a thought, one does not have to “journey” to the ends of the earth & swim through shark-infested waters or climb the highest wall or peak on this planet…it is so easy, however, many do not believe & will never believe and will suffer a second death and be seperated from God for eternity.
      I was on You Tube & watching & listening to songs..I had mentioned a song, “Two Faces Have I” in one of my post, so went back to listen to it. After many songs, came across an old country song that may sum-up a few things..written by Bill Anderson & what happened at a resturant that made him write the song and it was sung by Cal Smith…”Lord Knows I’m Drinking”.Here in Mt. years ago there were men like Michael….& they would live & probably think about others critizing them, “It ain’t non of your business”.
God gives us free will.. we can choose to live for Him…or we can choose to live for ourselves..If we choose ourselves..then that is all we get..if we choose Jesus/Yeshua..then we get to live in eternity with him..and as I understand..when the unsaved die..they go to a place of torment..I suspect it will be tormenting because they will no longer be in the presence of God..and they will await their fate at the White Throne Judgement.. the saved will go to a heavenly place of rest..and the millenial kingdom will be brought in shortly..that’s the thousand year reign of Christ..where there will be no sin..then at the end of that kingdom..satan is loosed for a short time to deceive the children of the millenial reign..then the White Throne Judgement and then Satan and the unsaved will be thrown into the pit..and the saved will live forever..being forever young and enjoying heavenly bliss in the service of our YHWH..our God.
      However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
      I live my life much like this guy did and I have ZERO fear of how I will be judged before God. Not because I don’t believe in God but because I believe he will judge us each individually based not on how much we read the bible or how often we go to church but on how we treated our fellow man and his myriad creatures.
      Personally I make every effort to help a person in need. I pull over at every car accident, help people stranded on the side of the road, give money to the poor, feed the homeless when I can, always offer to help a friend with anything and when needed, help nab criminals to the extent I can. Those are the things I believe we will be judged on, not how many beers we had each Friday or Saturday night or if we brought home a girl from the bar on occasion!
      Just my two cents.
      A unique quality of Christians is that we strive to live out the commandments of God and Jesus. So we talk about it because it is our individual compass and it seems normal. We don’t just live for Sundays and what you may think is “preaching’ is to us a fact. We judge ourselves by that measuring stick and look at life through those eyes.
      For years, may of us have remained silent-in the closet if you will. But we know our country (and many other countries ) are in trouble. We are standing now and we are standing for you too.
      PurveyorOfTruth,
      AMEN!!! Thank you for saying EXACTLY what I would have merely attempted to write had I not read your post. You nailed it. God Bless You!
      My editorial comments:
      1. No one but God knows the trail this man left behind in others lives living the way he did.
      2. Freewill is a myth. There is God’s will and there is sin. So many shades of grey and God sees them all the same.
      3. Be careful with man’s definition and description of hell, such as Dante. There is the Kingdom of Heaven, and hell is everything outside it. From the Bible, “a great gnashing of teeth.”
      I’d write more, but just I hope your post itself influences lives. Thank you for it.
      Purveyoroftruth is peddling no religion, Jesus was a rebel himself, according to the norms of his time. They crucified Him as a rebel, not a religious man. Jesus has nothing to do with any man’s religion. Jesus taught His followers not to judge: Jesus will be the true eternal judge. If you ask why man pushes religion all the time, well why do athiests push sin and rebellion all the time? Jesus pushed love and kindness to others above self. That is why he wey to the cross, he died for love’s sake. I myself would be proud and honored to die for Jesus but never for religion. Purveyoroftruth did just as his avitor states.
      I have seen responses about “free will”. This man practiced his free will. I am not offended by religion, just those that try to force it on others at every turn. Like gay people that try to force their beliefs on others. No one likes uninvited guests. Then there is the assumption that my comment is leftist. Simply because I disagree with one aspect of a topic does not make me anything other than disagreeable on one topic. I am pretty far from the left. I believe in my country, my guns and everyone’s right to pursue their own happiness as long as it does not impede someone else. I have yet to see any proof that any one religion practiced on the face of this earth is the “right” one. Just those that say theirs is right. Based on what appears to be the choice of religion for many on here I see many hypocrites. Maybe this sounds familiar Judge not lest ye be judged, Those without sin cast the first stone. I believe it is Gods place to judge, not anyone on here. Of course who’s to say God is. everyone seems to think it is there God.
      Who cares? He’s not forcing you to read his post. For many folks, religion is a way of life. They can’t disconnect from it, just because one person may not like it. They don’t stop being religious when they log on to the Blaze. Someone just died, and proudly proclaimed to live a rebellious and very socially liberal life, that, in the eyes of many folks, has EVERYTHING to do with religion.
She said she was going to throw a party I agreed, celebrate my life, not my death. Her and I have shared a lot of our lives over a bottle of wine. Relived all the good times. Death is just another part of life. I believe our souls live on, and I am going to the party……………….Cheers all.
      I wish more people of Christ would think this way. Instead of tossing out scriptures and declaring a soul lost with a sullen face and resisting every urge to feel humor, why can‘t more of us look at a person’s imperfect life and say “if I love that person, and I never even knew that person, how much more must God love that person?”
      God is love, and one of his wayward sons is finding his way back home into his Father’s arms while his older brother Jesus is walking beside him, teaching him and helping him every step of the way. This life, like all life, is to be celebrated.
      I personally think God has a tremendous sense of humor (he created democrats didn’t He?) Seriously, some who have posted here seem more than eager to “judge” others and would never think to look in the mirror. You know nothing about what a person holds in their heart and how spiritual they may be or what personal relationship they have with God. As for me? I’m living and loving life. I’ve accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior and He is the only perfect One. I’ve made mistakes…I’ll make more mistakes….as I’m human…. Life is a journey. It’s sounds like Mr. Blanchard loved many of life’s experiences, was a good and dedicated friend, bravely served his country and who didn‘t apologize for being true to him self thus wasn’t a hypocrite. Sounds like a fine chap to me. May God Bless you Mr. Blanchard and may you rest in eternal peace. (TBL) OMG 2012
      @Barber2 – you believe God is more concerned w/ “haters” than “partiers.” That would be nice. There are so many posts here that want God to be “nice.” He isn’t. We know God lkes parties – God commands the Israelites to hold celebrations & feasts; Jesus feasted; throughout Scripture, God tells us He will feast with us. And perhaps Flathead had one or two beers & went home except his words express a different relationship with alcohol. He speaks about “enjoying” younger women – again, it just doesn’t have a ring of respecting women but lusting after them; lust is a form of hate. His survivors include an ex-wife, God hates divorce. There’s so much Flathead said about himself that speaks of something other than a life well lived. He doesn’t remind one of Mother Theresa – she lived life to the fullest & partied too.
      God can forgive anything & I pray Flathead made peace w/ God & sought His forgiveness. We can’t know. We can say, just by reading his obituary, that much of what he was so happy about – the “raising hell” portion – is not behaving like a man who loves God & not actions we ought to copy. Yes, he did some good things, but God has told us that if the righteous man turns away from righteousness, his good deeds will not be counted: it’s not a point system w/ a minimum required for a passing grade. Rather, it’s following Christ & not stepping away from Him to raise hell but following him even when we party. That’s really living life to the fullest.
      Theres plenty of those types left…you just have to get outside the major urban centers to see most of them. I for one relate with this “character” and was raised in a similar fashion (in terms of being an individual responsible for MY own actions etc). The drinking and carrying on ….nothing wrong with that as long as the ‘fun” did not hurt others intentionally. I’d cut this guy some serious slack for one reason…Viet nam vet, end of story. Those guys endured unimaginable hardship not only from the enemy but thier own eadership and people back home. The average combat an infantry soldier saw a month in WWII was 7 days…by Viet Nam it was 30-60 days straight (search and destroy in the bush) with 2 days off at an R&R camp…then back into the jungle for another 30-60 days. Incredible stress that went on for the entire 12 month rotation (if they managed to survive intact or at all).
