Shocking: Reports Indicate Suspect of ‘Dark Knight’ Shootings Was a Camp Counselor

Bill Dedman, an investigative reporter for msnbc.com, is reporting that the suspect in the horrifying shooting in Aurora, Colorado was a camp counselor in the summer of 2008 for underprivileged children in Glendale, California.

NBC News has more information:

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles confirmed that [James] Holmes was a cabin counselor, responsible for 10 children at its Camp Max Straus for children ages 7 to 14 from Los Angeles. Holmes was then a 20-year-old student at the University of California, Riverside, and neighbors have said he was active in the Presbyterian church that the family attended. The camp is nonsectarian.

A statement from the group said, “His role was to [ensure] that these children had a wonderful camp experience by helping them learn confidence, self esteem and how to work in small teams to effect positive outcomes. These skills are learned through activities such as archery, horseback riding, swimming, art, sports and high ropes course.”

A fellow counselor told NBC News that Holmes seemed shy.

“The entire staff was really close, considering we lived together, except for James,” said the counselor, who asked that she not be named. “He really kept to himself and hardly ever went on any trips with the rest of the staff. He was very shy and reserved.”

According to NBC, photos of the staff show Holmes goofing around with other counselors.

NBC continues:

“It is sickening,” the fellow counselor said, “knowing that he killed kids the same age that he once cared for.” The youngest of those who died in Friday morning’s shooting is Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6. Holmes, who has not been charged with a crime, is scheduled to have his first court appearance on Monday and is expected to face 12 counts of homicide and many counts of attempted homicide.

The CEO of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles, Randy Schwab, told NBC4 Los Angeles that Holmes had no disciplinary problems. “It is with shock and sorrow that we learned of the incident in Aurora,” Schwab said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends of those involved in this horrible tragedy.” [Emphasis added]

      JZS knows that Anders Behring Breivik had no relationship with American Conservatism or Christianity. He knows that unlike the muslims (who celebrate when their own commit mass murder), American conservatives do not protect or advocate Breivik, and would hope he gets the death penalty.

      Actually a more substantial clue can be found by the fact I’m not reading anything political about this murderer in Colorado.       But to your comment, the way Breivik described himself sounds a lot like you. He wrote that he was “100% Christian” and a proud Islamaphobe. He was fond of Pamela Geller and her website Atlas Shrugged. He also identified with the far right, that’s why he killed a bunch of liberal kids.

      Well, that’s not really why. The real reason was that he was simply crazy.

    Ha what a joke I have known people that take care of mentally handicapped people most do care but most are as mentally disturbed as the people thy care for in their own way. They are a strange bread and most are the very liberal kind. I don’t dough this guy was a camp counselor at all they are a very odd ball group of people.

    Matches what I know of these people 100% don’t be fooled by the fact they are helping these people that doesn’t make them saints or even NORMAL.

      By the way my experience of them is from the 80′s and a group of them working at our place with their supervisor some kind of work program for the mentally handicapped so two people were doing the job of one and even then they were always behind and backing the rest of us up. Sorry but they should not be working a regular job and can be violent too boot I know I had one toss me into a set of lockers just because I walked by him. The answer I was in his space wow wish they had warned me of that little problem.

      I think the whole narrative of this article that he was a camp counselor and he killed people the same age as he once “cared for” is just nonsense. Irregardless of the fact that people who go to “midnight matinees” tend to skew younger….he wounded around 70 people shooting randomly. There is no irony to the report. It was useless carnage by a deranged individual who instead of being one of our best and brightest flipped out to the dark side.

    Not surprising considering community service is required to graduate high school in most districts (I graduated four years before him and had to log at least 24 hours). Also, there’s pretty much no way to get into grad school without some sort of volunteer record. Just because he volunteered doesn’t mean he enjoyed it or got anything out of it, it was probably just for his own selfish reasons.

That is why all the really expensive protective gear that not even our military gets to wear ie. the leg protection. If there was an armed citizen in the crowd with thousands of hours of marksmanship training and range time/battle experience, they would have had a hard time finding a good shot.       This is exactly why the argument you all try to make, “if more people were armed there would have been fewer casualties” makes no sense. He anticipated the possibility and protected himself against it. If more people had been armed, there would have been more gunshots going on in a dark, smoke filled, chaotic theater, and there certainly would have been more innocent people hit.

      was it even functional? all we have heard is witnesses describing black body armor. I’ll bet it was part of a batman costume just so this nut job could feel like some kind of movie hero (or villian).     Who were his friends? He had to have some. What courses had he taken besides the Neurosciences?
    I will interested to find out everything this man did from birth until now and get some kind of picture of who he really is. Did he travel? There is a lot more to this, possibly than we know. It is hard for me to believe someone just wakes up and decides to do murder even if it is planned for some months on a strategy to carry this out. There had to be some underlying philosophy and/or motive that put him on that track. There had to be something he believed in strongly or something that made him so angry he took his anger out on innocents. This should not be swept under the rug, whatever it is.

    This is a problem we must solve in America. Psychological problems are ignored, repressed denied… and this is the way how we help what can exploit one day as a severe neurosis or even sociopaths.. We do not speak freely about many issues, and keeping it under the rug may be a recipe for disaster.

    The only inference that can be made by this story is that the suspect’s moral integrity degraded over a four year period. If he was camp counselor at the age of 20, and a pornography loving mass-murderer by the age of 24, he obviously compromised his moral values a great deal along the way. It just goes to prove that once God is removed from the picture, things can go downhill awfully fast! Even Stalin was a former seminarian.

    How does someone with no criminal background get access to the type of body armor, tear gas, and SWAT gear that he had on? How does a PhD become a functional expert in these wapons as well as explosives/traps? Why would he go to those lengths to set up the appartment traps, and then warn the police about them? How does an unemployed student get the money for this equipment (at least $10,000)?

    I hope Glenn searches for these answers over the next few days. I have heard that a big UN small arms treaty is expected next week….Seems very suspicious to me

      Saw it, never bought it. Been in the biz too long, their stories of midnight raids on their home only works in movies. In real life they were picked up at work. They gave tried to give classified info to a newspaper, sorry but that is illegal and they knew it.

      Interesting post. How about some simpler. He is a psycho POS going to college on mom and dads money. They send him money to live on and spring break, but he decides he’s going to use that money to buy weapons and ammo to kill people.

      My biz, for the last 20 yrs it’s been Intell, before that launching nukes and before that jarhead. As far as what I know, unlike with the folks we are discussing, I do not divulge info. The credibility gab should be with those that betray their oath to safeguard information. Take it for what it’s worth, but anyone in the Intell field would say the same

There are some inconsistencies with other whackjobs who go on a shooting spree that bring up additional questions. I do believe a wise man would seek out answers to them. It‘s not like there won’t be simple answers as you suggest, but there’s no harm in looking.

      May be a case of strange coincidences – maybe not. Either way, make sure you are aware of the upcoming UN small arms treaty…It is a doosy. People are saying that it is unconstitutional but as we saw with Obamacare, all the government has to do is attach a tax to it and the supreme court will look the other way….

      You re silly. You do not need to tell anyone how many rounds of ammo you buy. I can visit 10 stores in one day and take home 10K rounds of ammo. It’s actually not that big a deal. I have more than that in my office. When you are an avid shooter you go through ammo like crazy. I can shoot 1000 rounds easy of shotgun in a weekend. Unless I want to be driving back to the store all the time, I stock up. Just to have it on hand. Your comment shows you do not understand guns and ammo in any sense.

      Who is going to monitor that? That’s not as much as you think. Competitive shooters, while most of them load their own rounds, sometimes buy in bulk for practice. I don’t know if it said he bought all of it in one day and from one place. Maybe you have better info on that. S03 is right, you can easily go through 1000 rounds in a day, especially with buddies shooting too. Those of us that shoot competitively or just for fun understand this. It’s not how many rounds this POS had, it’s how he used them.

      You must understand this was multiple purchases from multiple Internet sites over the span of 2 months. Internet companies do not share purchase information with other Internet companies. He bought 500 rounds here, 1000 rnds from another site etc.

      I asked this question on Twitter, was 6,000 rounds a normal amount of rounds to have for everyday hunting or target practice. The answer was one individual uses 200-500 rounds during his practice shoots. That to me seems excessively high, but I don’t own a gun, yet. He also stated gun companies will usually give a discount on bullets when you buy by the case, which can contain 500 rnds to 1000 rnds of ammo.

      So in this case, no flags even if in place, would not go up.

    Hey yall, that MIGHT just indicate that he was TRYING to do GOOD at one time. But obviously he saw the world in a different light at some point in time. I’m guessing that point was a continual build up of , I can’t afford these education loans, I can’t take this bullying anymore, I can’t get a job even IF DO complete my doctorate, I cant I cant I cant eventually tuens into I dont want i dont want to because it’s not worth living in this conditional world, PERIOD. Why ??? Because humans are CONDITIONAL, unlike animals where they all drink from the same well, prey or not. THINK man think.
