‘He Provided Me the Opportunity to Survive’: Woman Describes How Military Boyfriend Took a Bullet for Her During Shooting

A woman who survived the deadly Aurora, Co. movie theater shooting said her military member boyfriend laid on top of her during the gunfire, taking a bullet and sacrificing his own life to save hers.

Jansen Young said she didn’t realize at first what was happening when alleged gunman James Holmes opened fire on the theater where she was seeing “The Dark Knight Rises” with boyfriend Jon Blunk, according to NBC’s “Today.”

She described an object first sailing into the theater over the audience, which police have said contained an unknown gas.

“It flew up behind us…and it just went boom,“ Young said Saturday on ”Today.”

When the shooting started, she said Blunk immediately shoved her to the ground.

“He pushed my hips to the floor and he’s like, Jansen, Jansen get down and stay down,” she said. “He kind of pushed me in under the seat and pushed on me real hard and he was laying up against me, he kind of whispered in my ear, ‘There’s someone with a gun and he’s shooting people.’”

“I didn’t know, but he knew immediately that it was real,” she said.

The Pentagon said Friday that one sailor and two airmen were wounded in the shooting, and that one sailor was unaccounted for. Their names have not been officially released. A total of 12 people were killed in the shooting and dozens other injured.

Young said that even as the shooting was happening, she had a hard time believing it was real.

Young said there was a woman in the row above her screaming “I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot” and said she felt wetness on her body, which she later realized was blood.

“I didn’t really know what that was, and then it was like a whole bunch of wetness everywhere and I started thinking this is — that’s definitely a water balloon, that’s too much wet to be anything but a water balloon.”

She said someone stepped on her on their way out screaming “Jessie’s been shot!’”

Young said it wasn’t until she tried to get out of the theater herself that she realized Jon was lifeless.

“I tried to shake him and was saying his name, and like Jon, Jon we’ve got to go,” she said. “I kind of poked my head up at that point and realized oh my gosh, nobody’s in here, it’s just us. There were like a few other heads here and there I could see leaving the theater but really the theater was empty…that’s when I got out and I kept thinking that was…oh my gosh, I think Jon just took a bullet for me.”

“I was thinking about what a great hero he was and he provided me the opportunity to survive,” she said. “He wasn’t just a hero last night, he has been a hero forever,” she said.

She said Blunk had planned to re-enlist in the military, telling her once, “Jansen, I was born to serve my country.”

“He was re-enlisting it was just what he wanted to do and he loved it,” she said. “He saved me and he gave me the opportunity to live, he would have done it for anyone that day…that’s just who he was.”

Young said she doesn‘t know what she’s going to do now.

“I can’t fathom not coming home to Jon,” she said. “I don‘t even know at this point if I’m willing to stay in Colorado. Three days ago I was coming back to Colorado because I was going to live with Jon, be with Jon. What am I coming back here for?”

Bronze Star for this one. As it is defined in Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 ..”that it may be awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. As a medal it is awarded for merit, and with the “V” for valor device it is awarded for heroism”

Brave young man. My heart goes out to his family and the young lady. I am so very sorry for your loss.

My question now, where were all the folks with their concealed weapons permits and weapons that could have stopped or limited this attack?

No one had ever try something like that with me around as I will kill them — Kimber .45 — no debate – no regret!

Again, may God bring peace to the lives of all those that have lost someone. This is a very difficult time and we all know it. Our prayers are with you all.

How do you raise a kid that is okay with shooting strangers, unarmed strangers. Who wires his apartment to kill more people? Who can shoot a 3 month or 6 year old child? How do you do that? I know that the modern medicine can make people totally crazed, but this guy has been planning this for months. I would shoot my kids first before I let them hurt anyone else. Seriously. I have to wonder why this mother “knew” that they had the right place when they called? I also would NEVER let him use any Attorney for anything but being prosecuted. HE HAS NO DEFENSE. AND…if he didn’t tell the truth about how his apt. was wired, I’d have water/boarded him myself. What about these parents? WE ALL have the responsibility to raise our kids to appreciate LIFE and know right from wrong. There is NO EXCUSE for these “loners” – tough..figure out how NOT to be alone… Maybe this is also a result of trophies for nothing. WE all have a lot of cleaning up our society to do. It begins with getting the Progressive, PC, Liberals out of office. Their entire life-philosophy is opposed to Christian Teaching. I’m sorry for those Victims and all around them.

Marine 1: learn about the laws in Colorado before chastising those who voluntarily take on the responsibility of concealed carry. In Colorado, a person can carry a concealed weapon only in those areas specified by law. One qualifier is that a private business can ban weapons, concealed or otherwise from their premises. The theater chain in question here BANS LEGAL CONCEALED WEAPONS FROM THE THEATER. So in order to obey the laws of Colorado, CC license holders must leave their weapons outside when attending movies at that theater chain….

No, not a Bronze Star, please keep that for military action, and besides his actions go beyond the definition of all military awards.

However, these actions would clearly be covered by the Presidential Medal of Freedom or Congressional Gold Medal. Both of those are more towards what this man did, and they are more towards what this man deserves, other than his life back.

C SCHWEHR…The more I thought about your rebuttal the more I realized that the people of Colorado really need to change their gun laws. Businesses need to allow concealed weapons as well.

This is a prime example of what happens when liberals and progressives rule. The people become the victims. If there had been one well trained person that had their weapon on them in that theater fewer people would have lost their lives.

The people of Colorado need to take this very sad event as a wake up call and change their gun laws. More people need to have their CWP’s and carry all the time.

If the liberals continue down their intended path no one will have guns or a way to protect themselves anywhere. Let’s hear it for Arizona!

Can’t agree more! I always wish the media could use a bit of psychology in thier coverage – still cover the story truthfully – but make an effort to highlight stories of heroism on the part of those targeted by these sickos – and whenever they focus on the murderer, protray them as cowardly, week, shameful, pitiful, etc. That might go a long way in discouraging the copy cats – it seems they want to have all the attention, induce terror and fear, be godlike in their power of life and death. I say portray them in ways that make them seem small, pathetic, powerless – that is why they stooped to murder, because they were a wimpy, pathetic loser who had no other way to feel powerful. Also – less focus on them and more on the heroism of those targeted? Not sure if I’m on the right track but maybe it might help?

You are so right. I think I (being a veteran) am more man than those that ran, thinking only of themselves. And it IS the plan of the left to feminize our men. I’m one of the lucky women who has a real man for a husband. He would have done the same thing, pushed me to the ground and protected me. Had I been there alone, I would have been trying to protect those weaker than me, the children. Because of my military training, I would have tried to protect anyone. It’s a shame that the only way he could have been “taken out,” was if someone chose to disobey the law and carry a weapon. Gun laws will only make criminals out of honest Americans.

You know what, you both are right. No Democrat or liberal would do anything to save his family. He would just run out of the theater like a little girl screaming. When we look back through history, if there is only one constant, it is that Democrats and liberals would never do anything to protect or save their families. They are all just immoral, evil people.

However, if history can teach us one thing, it is that the minute you become a conservative, you will immediately be willing to take a bullet for your family, something that no Democrat or liberal has ever done in the history of the world.

You two are really despicable in thinking that this has anything to do with being a liberal or conservative and that a liberal man wouldn‘t take a bullet for his family or that he wouldn’t do anything in his power to protect his family.

Godfather, a liberal would certainly do anything to protect his family. He would do anything if that list of available options includes hugging it out with the perp, trying to empathize with him, offering him some sort of victim status to justify his horrendous actions, and possibly holding a discussion panel to talk about alternative ways for the bad guy to express his criminal rage. Looney libs don’t want anyone to have any means of defending himself or his family because it might somehow violate the sensibilities of the criminal. Notice how the very first thing libs screamed about was taking guns away from everyone? So yeah, being a conservative makes one far more inclined to think of himself and his family instead of the rights of and the possible excuses for the heathen criminal element so precious and dear to the liberal mindset.

Typical example of the Normalcy Bias. People you need to break out of the sheep mindset. This great American Hero was not a sheep. He saw the world for how it truly is and this is why he made the choice to give his life. If he had a gun on him there is no question in my mind that he would have dropped that crazy syco in a heart beat!

You are correct and I take note that you are being attacked by people like mormons for stating a TRUTH. I also note that the mormon noted that many religions are gathered together and I believe that is what the one world end time government is pushing for.

Remember this is a Glenn Beck site and he is the front person with the “we the religious people must band together” movement

I pray that that young man believed upon the death burial and resurrection of Jesus
