Allen West For Congress released on Wednesday a powerful new ad featuring former U.S. Army Sergeant Robert Delgado.
The video, titled “Body Armor,” begins with the veteran recalling his deployment to Iraq.
“When we got our orders to go to Iraq, my wife was eight months pregnant,” he says, “so it was a little nerve-wracking not knowing, you know, ‘will I get to see my unborn child?’”
“My commander was Lt. Col. Allen West and he said, ‘I’m going to make sure you come home to your wife your newborn baby,” Sgt. Delgado adds. “Before we went into Iraq, he gave me his body armor.”
The Iraq veteran then recalls a moment where, while driving through the streets of Iraq, his unit came under fire. He was shot by an AK-47 but, because of the body armor given to him by Lt. Col. West, the bullet didn’t penetrate his lung.
“Lt. Col. Allen West saved my life,” a grateful Delgado says. “Col. West gave me his body armor. Because of that, I’m here today.”

West. I don’t want bring race into the elections, but have to say, this is the black man that I wish was the first black president. The one we have right now just opened a lot of wounds (concerning racism) that need not have been opened. We have a polarizer and chief that may have done irrepairable damage to race relations for years. West did make a mistake with the tax deal a year ago last Summer, but he’s done more good then harm while in Congress and if I could, I would vote for him for Congress for another term no doubt about it. I know ultimately, this man would have my back unlike who we have in the Whitehouse now. :)

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:48pmThat’s a great question. Remember that Rumsfeld said that you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want. I well remember the beginning of the Iraq War when countless soldiers were requesting armor from their friends and family because it wasn’t being provided for them. Hell, they didn’t even properly armor the vehicles when they first went to war…STUPID! I guess the Neo-Con war-mongering faction of the Republican Party in 2003 just couldn’t wait to go to war, prepared or not, justified or not. Again…incredibly STUPID!

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:03pmWINEDUDE, I retired from the Army during Clinton’s second term. I guess you don’t recall Clinton cutting the legs out from under the military. The only government employee reduction that he followed through with his campaign promises was to reduce the size of the military. He then turned around violating federal laws by giving away tactical military vehicles to other nations and in particular African nations by not vetting the intention of use by these countries. He was the first president to filter funds through various military programs to provide funds to pet projects, and other nations when other wise Congressional approval was required. By the time that 9-11 occurred Clinton had so badly damaged the effectiveness of our standing active duty military that National Guard and Reserve units were amongst the first deployed to Afghanistan. Had this nation had the pre-Clinton military when 9-11 occurred, military reaction would have been faster, more effective, and the Guard as well the Reserve could have been just that, held in reserve. Oh BTW, military expenditures are roughly 7% of annual government expenditures while benefit expenditures reach close to 70%.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 1:54pmIn the invasion of Iraq, not all soldiers had body armor. During the invasion nearing 51,000 service members and civilians did not have it (interceptor vest). Body armor has really advanced since then and now you cannot deploy unless you have a flak. First was the interceptor, then MTV which was designed to help with IED casualties, and the plate carrier, which most use in Afghanistan. Depends on what theatre you are in to what kind of flak you are issued.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:16pmPRFCTLYFRANK, PLATONICIAN is correct. West’s unit deployed in the earliest times of our involvement in Iraq. His so called “War Crimes” incident occurred in ‘03. More than likely, the vest he passed along to SGT Delgado was most likely the PASGT that came out well before I retired 16 years ago. Even then, we were sometimes not issued the vests in some units. We got the old 1950′s era flak vests instead. Furthermore, where were you when there were outcries on the national news of parent, friends, and politicians screaming for the acquisition of more and even better body armor. It was in the news on a daily basis just a few years ago.
