Hear the Horrifying 911 Call Made After Model Walked Into Spinning Plane Propeller

Nick Stern/Double Vision Media

Earlier this week we saw the first pictures of 23-year-old model and fashion blogger Lauren Scruggs, who lost her hand and eye when she walked into a plane propeller last month.

Now, gossip site TMZ has obtained an audio recording of the seven-minute 911 call made after the horrific accident at a Texas airport.

A girl walked into an airplane prop! I need an ambulance immediately,” a female caller is heard telling the 911 operator. “I think it cut her hand off.”

As The Blaze previously reported, Scruggs had gone with a friend for a private flight to look at Christmas lights from the sky. Upon exiting the plane, she walked directly into the spinning propeller, with the blades slicing the left side of her face and severing her left hand. According to a federal report, the plane’s pilot said he tried to warn Scruggs about the propeller and to guide her to safety. When he thought she was safe he returned to his seat, only to hear someone scream, “Stop, stop!”

The Daily Mail detailed the call:

In the call, placed at 8:48 p.m. on December 3 from a private airport near Dallas, a male caller describes Lauren as conscious and breathing but bleeding badly with her face to the ground.

When asked exactly what part of her body she injured, the male caller says: ‘We don’t know, we haven’t turned her over.’

Lauren’s cries and moans become louder throughout the call as the operator instructs her relatives on how to stem the blood with clean towels.

He repeatedly tells the caller to keep her calm and to avoid moving her, lest they hurt her neck or back.

A male voice in the background is heard between her screams, saying: ‘Lay still baby. Lay still, sugar.’

An emergency crew arrived shortly after 8:54 p.m to help the terrified friends and family.

The pilot should have NEVER let her out before the plane was parked and off. It was his responsibility and fault. Used to fly on small private aircraft often, can’t imagine why the pilot would have let her out with the prop turning.

Many years ago I was lying on the street with a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding from a motorcycle wreck. Fully, conscious and surrounded by onlookers, I waited for the paramedics to take me to the hospital, where it took three months to recover. In the years since, I experienced two incidents of what could only have been PTSD, triggered by specific events. Listening to this call almost brought me to a third. I’m so glad it was audio only! This lady is very fortunate that a level-headed, professional operator answered the call and dispatched the fire/rescue team so quickly. I wish her the best in her recovery.

Little angry at the world Vicksvaporrub? Little hint, doesn’t revolve around you nor with the earth tilt on its axis if you stop pulling your dog-eared race card at every turn. For all the bleating I hear from the likes of the left claiming anyone on the right is a sheep–you sure have let the politicians and pundits steer you right into the game. And even better? Here you are on a forum displaying it for all to see FOREVER. Life sucks doesn’t it?

The dispatcher asked the questions that the doctors have outlined that he ask. The script he used is very standard, and he followed it almost perfectly.

BIG PAWS—– I should have explained that my impression was that she walked toward the backside of the turning propeller. The backside of propellers are normally painted all dull “instrument panel black” with no striping. This is for the purpose of reducing the glare from landing lights during night operations. It also helps reduce glare from sunlight in daytime. Any striping on the propeller is on the forward surface and not visible to anyone approaching from the backside. At least this was the procedure during my 50+ years of flight instruction. Thanks for agreeing that the engine should be shut down when loading or unloading passengers. Lets hope it never happens again. My best to you and the pilot and the victim.

This tears my heart apart! It sounded to me as if she was calling for her Mom at one point. You can hear the terror in her screams & moans. It has caused me to think of my daughter (early 20′s) & try not to think of her in similar pain. Oh, God help her & her family recover from this. Give them strength. …And Lord, forgive those who are mocking her & calling her names, for they have no heart or conscience.

I like Beck and I’m conservative, but many of the posts such as a lot on this story makes me think I’m in very bad company. To thinks somehow you can make a joke that works out of a story like this shows you’re nothing but trash and to put down this poor girl.

Out of all the low class, low IQ, postings I see on other sites, I’ve never seen so many as I do on the blaze and these posts on this story proves it once again. Who are you people? Do you realize your coming off as about as low class and low IQ acting as anyone could?

I’m with you, it’s disheartening. Many posts are trolls or other nasty people posing as Beck fans just trying to stir up problems. They really need to re-evaluate what they do with their time and lives. Most authentic Glenn Beck fans are focused on encouraging others and making the world a better place. It becomes obvious these people don’t listen or watch Glenn since they are bent on destruction and tearing down good people.

People often say things that are inappropriate in order to shield themselves from the horror of the moment and the thought that it could happen to them, their wife, their daughter, their sister, etc. Just like we cannot know what this young woman is going through or the distraction that caused her not to realize the danger she was in (maybe a bit deaf from pressure in ears and noise of just ended flight), dark (pilots look through a spinning prop all the time, while safely in their seats), and the excitement-adrenaline rush of the moment-the flight, an adrenaline rush that actually may have helped to save her life after the prop strike. Use this story positively–it may just prevent another such accicent with an even less fortunate outcome!

Actually, people get injured by props all the time, and even an navy guy ended up sucked into a turbine of a jet on a carrier. I seriously doubt if this was just a blonde moment, as so many conclude.

And the jokes and snide remarks, such sad people to turn a human life into an opportunity for disdain and humor. Not funny, none of the jokes are funny. They reveal a lot more about the jokesters than they do about anything else – mostly people jealous of a pretty girl.

My friend, there have been instances of professional pilots and aircraft mechanics being killed by walking into turning propellers. You must realize that even in daytime light a turning propeller cannot be seen. At night it is absolutely impossible to see a turning propeller. Please note that I am a retired professional pilot and my criticism is not of the girl but rather of the pilot. No passengers should ever be loaded or unloaded with the engine running. This pilot will live with this mistake the rest of his life, as will this injured girl.

Ok, Psychosis, let me be fair to all the repli-ers to this post. First, you are correct, you cant fix stupid. If this were truly a blond moment, her parents should have taught her to stay away from dangerous things…like spinning props. Second, to all your detractors who have posted these pathetic replies that resemble intense hand-wringing, I have 3 words….GET A LIFE!!! Third, Quencher, I applaud you for your take on this situation. You are correct. This pilot should not have allowed a hot unload. But I will disagree with you on one point. In an effort to make a spinning prop more visible, they are all supposed to have colored stripes painted on the blade tips.

So, in conclusion, to any who would call this woman an example of beauty, I would hit a dead dog in the a$$ with her. In addition, this is what she gets for not paying attention. As for the pilot who will live with this the rest of his days, you have my sympathies, sir. And as for the hand-wringers who have posted above, go sit in the sewer with the OWS crowd.
