Heart-Wrenching Image: Dog Keeps Watch Over Fallen SEAL’s Casket During Funeral

Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson was laid to rest Friday in Rockford, Iowa, where an estimated 1,500 mourners came to pay respects for the fallen Navy SEAL, including his dog Hawkeye. In fact, Hakeye’s loyalty to his owner at the funeral was visible, creating a heart-wrenching image as he laid down by the casket of his owner during the entire service:
KIMT-TV captured the scene on video:
The 35-year-old Tumilson died Aug. 6, when a rocket-propelled grenade disabled the helicopter he was in. It crashed, killing 30 Americans and eight Afghans. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
“‘Hawkeye is/was his loyal ‘son’,” wrote Tumilson’s cousin Lisa Pembleton in an email to The Blaze. ”To say that he was an amazing man doesn’t do him justice. The loss of Jon to his family, military family and friends is immeasurable.”
Fellow Navy SEALS told KIMT-TV that Jon was someone with unmatched work ethic and character.
Last week hundreds of people were out at the airport to welcome the plane that returned his remains home, video from Northern Iowa Today:
Perry Beeman of the Des Moines Register writes that Tumilson wrote a class paper when he was 15 about how he wanted to spend the next 20 years as a Navy SEAL:
“‘J.T. was going to be a Navy SEAL come hell or high water,’ friend Scott Nichols said of Tumilson, who was born in Osage on July 1, 1976, the nation’s bicentennial year, and grew up in Rockford.
Outside the service at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock gym, two cranes hoisted a huge U.S. flag in Tumilson’s honor.
‘If J.T. had known he was going to be shot down when going to the aid of others, he would have went anyway,’ said Boe Nankivel, another friend.
Tumilson leaves behind parents George and Kathleen, sisters Joy and Kristie, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and of course, Hawkeye.
A relative of Tumilson wrote to the Blaze that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frogman238 Memorial Fund, First Security Bank and Trust, 201 West Main Ave., Rockford, Iowa 50468, (641)756-3361, to honor Tumilson’s memory.

There is a different kind of bond that people share with their animals, dogs and yes, even cats. You will never know that. People think I am empty inside because I don’t believe in god? Posted on August 23, 2011 at 6:16pmNo, dogs are that way due to thousands of years of domestication. They evolved with us. We bred them to be like that. This is why wolves are close to impossible to domesticate and why wolf hybrids can lean either way and possibly end up turning on its owner. It is also a reason why apes don’t make good house pets.

Which is odd because you would think apes would be the closest to us since we come from them as you say. I do not know the breeding history of dogs and it actually may be something I’ll check into. However, I believe you would find that’s the way they are because it was in their genes to be so as designed by God for, as I said the very purpose they serve. But, you can believe as you wish. That does not make you heartless, just heavenless, but that shouldn’t matter to you.

Dude, your an idiot. My dog Sammy loves me as I do her, She is sad to see me leave for work and happy when I come home, Ever seen a dog wag its tail becuse its happy??? She kisses me to says she loves me, She feels my sadness or pain and nurses me to help me feel better. When her boyfriend/mate died we mourned together. When I cried, she comforted me. She loves me, and I love her… more than my own kids. My four best friends in life have all been dogs, and I have had some very good friends. I would save Sammy’s life before most humans, she is that important and special. Your ignorance only shows that you have never had a bond with a dog. Mine would lay her life down for me and I would lay down mine for her. All dogs go to heaven, I have two boxers, Bono and Brutus, that stand guard with US Marines at the gates. Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:02pmIf there is any animal out there that serves as the perfect example that animals feel and express emotion, it’s a dog. And I do believe they have a soul. Of course we hope that Officer Tumilson’s family will get through this dark part of their lives, but there’s no mistaking that this dog loves his master. Last year there was an elderly man on my block who had adopted an adult dog because he had always wanted one. He would sit out on his chair and she would be at his feet. When he was unable to walk her, our neighbor volunteered to help out, and my sister and I would sometimes accompany her. This dog had lots of spirit and was loyal to the old man. Sadly, he passed away not a year after adopting his dog. The lady that would come to look after him took the dog in until they could find her another home, and apparently poor thing whimpered a great deal after her master died. Thankfully, the little dog has a new home, and she got a second chance (was a shelter dog) thanks to our neighbor.
Animals may not be people, but they do have feelings and sometimes can sense things that we can’t. Judging by how Officer Tumilson’s dog Hawkeye is reacting to his death, it appears that the two had a tight bond, and I think it’s safe to say that Officer Tumilson would want you to include Hawkeye in your prayers for his family.

I believe they are wild creatures and should be left well enough alone in the wild rather than doing cheap tricks for us and kept in environments they shouldn’t be in, eating food they shouldn’t eat, etc… Just because you share a significant amount of DNA with another creature doesn’t mean that creature is going to automatically warm up to you. That’s not what genetics is about. We share a common ancestor with them and still have much to learn from them. If we had selected a chimpanzee to be our companions rather than dogs all those thousands of years ago, perhaps things would be different. Report Post »Having shared my life with many animals including wof hybrids over the years, I have had the pleasure of being part of THEIR lives. Wolves & hybrids cannot be treated as most people treat “dogs”, they have to be handled the way you’d treat a human. Any less and you are taking your life in your own hands. They are just as loyal, if not more-so that domestic dogs, because they consider the family their pack and will lay their life down for it/you. IF you earn their respect. But to take a full-blooded wolf and confine it is a dis-service to the animal. Even the hybrids ned to be handled with kid golves, but will return the treatment in spades. Apes are totally different, but again SHOULD NOT be kept or sold as “pets”. The general public is ignorant of the care requirements of these creatures..
As far as God goes, wait til you have your life on the line and then who will you turn to? Lonely life you choose…

You‘re going to have to talk very hard and fast to try to convince me that dogs can’t reason. Someone who I hadn’t seen in a long time came back unexpectedly and surprised me. Pepper thought I was being attacked and actually became aggressive. We were actually shocked because we had always assumed she would lick a burglar to death rather than growl and show teeth. We were wrong.
A deaf friend acquired a golden retriever who figured out A was deaf. The dog appointed herself A’s guardian even though she belonged to another family. The families worked out a joint “custody” deal. The rest of us knew you never, ever approached A from behind without greeting the dog and the town relaxed their rules about dogs on the beach for this dog who would become quite frantic if A went swimming without her.
So it’s going to take ALOT of convincing to change my mind.

I have never responded to any of the riduculous things that you have said. I don’t know if you are for real or say the things you do to just get reactions. I cannot believe you are real.
However I wish there was a way the brave Soldiers that fight for our freemdom and your Right to spout your filth could protect only the one’s that care and leave the others to their own devises. They however would protect you anyway. That is the way they are. Do you not realize that they are protecting you and your ridiculous beliefs. You truly make me nauseous.

What you fail to realize is it is not about sharia law at all. These people are not the enemy.

Traitor, daring to use the Flag as your avatar, traitor. How dare you call those jihadists “brave men.” They are despicable cowards who terrorize and murder their own people. Petty Officer Tumilson died for country, but he also selflessly sacrificed for the weak and oppressed in a foreign country, so that they too might live in freedom. At times like this I feel like firing squads are not such a bad thing after all.
RIP American hero, and may God watch over your beloved dog.

There is a time and a place to comment about the value of this war. This is not the time and place. Based on the comments from his friends, Petty Officer Tomlison was a dedicated Seal who served proudly. He may have been part of the team that killed Bin Laden. I suspect that the killing of Bin Laden justified the war in his mind. He is called a patriot, not because he was defending the Constitution but because he willingly put himself in harm’s way. Pay your respects and that is all.
