Nicole Graham was taking a ride along the Australian coastline just south of Melbourne when her horse stepped and sank into a pit full of “quicksand-like mud.” There Graham stayed with the horse for three hours until it could be freed by rescuers.

The Daily Mail reports that Graham was on a ride near Geelong with her daughter when 18-year-old horse named Astro got stuck. Graham then shouted a warning to her daughter, Paris, but even that was too late. The younger girl’s horse sank partially in the muck. Graham is reported as saying the experience was “terrifying” and “heartbreaking”:
We went straight down and under. There was mud everywhere and every time I moved it sucked me back down. It wouldn’t let us go.”
After ensuring her daughter and her horse were safe, she returned to Astro and prayed that rescuers would arrive before the tide engulfed the horse.
She added: “I’ve been riding here for 20 years and never had a drama. I’ve never seen any signs and didn’t realise it was so boggy.
“When I saw the dust from the rescue trucks I was so relieved. I was starting to get overwhelmed.”
Fire lieutenant Roger Buckle, who was among a team of helpers, said: “It was like a quicksand.”
Fire crews worked with a local farmer, who provided a tractor, and a veterinary team. The firemen used hoses and a winch, but none of this equipment was successful.

Watch this Reuters’ report of the rescue:
The Daily Mail reports that a helicopter was even on hand as a last resort. Aside from being dehydrated and exhausted, Stacey Sullivan, the horse’s vet, said he was doing fine.

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 5:01pmIt’s nice to know that there are other people in the world just as silly and sappy about their animals as we are! :) (You should see my family and our dogs!) Is it a weakness of Western Civilization? We would of course call it a strength and vow to never change, but I do wonder… I also wonder if there were any huge group efforts to save individual animals in the 19th or 18th centuries when life was much harder and not so ‘plentiful’ or sentimental…

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 11:19pmSo glad that story had a happy ending, BUT….
It is a lesson well learned as well. NEVER take a horse..or any animal…on ground you are not sure is safe. On the beach it should have been expected. Even on sandy ground, GET OFF AND WALK! You lead the horse, and it trusts you. Too many good horses have been put down because the rider made a bad or ill-informed judgement.

I completely agree, but earlier in the article it says she rides there all the time and has never experienced this before or even heard of it. Try to give her a little bit of a break.
The Blaze this is a good story and a happy ending. I think conservatives everywhere need a little encouragement. Rush talked about it yesterday and I’ve been thinking about it too. We need to act a little bit more like we’re at a pep rally and start getting ourselves pumped up. I keep hearing conservatives everywhere and while we have good reason to be disheartened we have no excuse to get down in the dumps. Please The Blaze help us and put more stories like this and encouraging stories for the conservatives out there so we can bolster ourselves up a little bit. We need passion and determination and fire in our belly and we need to stop believing the media when they try to convince us that we’re already defeated. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE with GOD. We can take back our country. We will!!! Thanks for the uplift.

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 4:55pmUmmm, Screwed- read the article before inserting foot into mouth. But you are right: don’t bring your animals where they could get hurt. After all, it isn‘t like feeding them imported food isn’t going to hurt them.
Report Post »Then again, if all swimming pools were drained of water, no one would drown in them, either.

Report Post »Wolf
Posted on March 1, 2012 at 4:44pm@Valkaneer- there‘s a difference between ’caring and concern‘ for an animal and ’having’ sex with one. Yes, I read the article about the Canadian and his dogs- and I also read the one where the POS pOTUS Oturd wants to allow beastiality and homosexuality in the military. Neither has anything to do with showing concern for animals, just pure satanic lust.
