Heartbreakingly Funny: 5-Year Old Loses It After Learning His Baseball Hero Has Been Traded

Probably the only thing worse than finding out you‘ve lost your Baseball hero to the world’s easiest-to-hate ball club is having your dad film your “freakout” and posting it to YouTube for the whole world to see — forever.
Chicago White Sox shortstop, outfielder, and second baseman Brent Lillibridge was traded to the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. One Lillibridge fan didn’t take the news very well.
“Brent Lillibridge is our favorite player. After I broke the news to my 5 year old son, he began crying and I didn’t know why,” the YouTube video’s description reads, “then grabbed my phone to record him after he stormed off to his room.”
Seriously, this video can never be undone. It’s on the internet. It’s forever. If this White Sox fan grows up to have the kind of friends we did in high school and college, we fully expect this video to play a prominent role in his life.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 7:55pmThis kid didn’t just happen to become a White Sox fan. This is the result of a father/son relationship that is clearly outstanding. The kid’s emotional reaction is based on an emotional investment in this shared interest with his dad. My hat is off to dad here. Good job.
I also think the video is cute. As this boy ages and his parents coach him on how to handle emotion, this kid’s commitment and passion will shine later in his life. He‘ll develop other interests and down the road we’ll all be better for it.
The negative responses to this video are useless, as almost all negativity is. This kid is going to be ok, and his dad is doing a fine job.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 7:16pmWow! You are some of the most judgmental people on the planet. The boy‘s reaction wasn’t out of character for a child his age. 5 year-olds do express emotion at some pretty funny things. It doesn’t mean his dad is teaching him that baseball is more important than anything else in life. That’s just asinine!! The dad is absolutely NOT a moron or a loser or any of the other very rude comments just because he got it on video. Get over yourselves. Its really not that big of a deal.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 6:29pmSome adults do not understand a child’s world, and will discount something that a child thinks is very important.
Report Post »You have to remember that children have a smaller view of the world than we do. They do not think of the big picture at this boy’s age. Children scaffold new information onto what they already know. It is a process. That is what growing up is all about. They are FORMATIVE YEARS.

Poor Kid. Why doesn’t the Dad explain to his Son, that sports isn’t important enough to cry over? That you should only be this upset over things that truly matter in life.
No 5 year old Kid should be this addicted to professional baseball. How is he going to handle a real tragedy some day?
The Dad wasn’t helping the situation at all. He was just after a good (viral) video to post on youtube. Exploiting and humiliating your child is never a smart decision. This should have been a private moment between Father and Son.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 6:08amYes, there truly are larger tragedies in life. Makes me wonder what kind of values (& their priorities) the parents are teaching their little boy. I feel sorry for him.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 6:08pmSports is a major part of the ruining of our nation, by turning our citizens into morons, as we can see by the father who uploaded this movie that helps prove his failure as a father in raising his son.
Very very sad..

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 10:48pmWhat is sad that you think sports is what is hurting our nation. Guess what, baseball has been a part of the culture since 1871, so we’ve gone about 140 years with baseball as a part of our pastime. Not to mention that the motivation and hopes that sports offers kids to work hard in school because for so many years now, it is the only so many kids can go to college through a scholarship. Your comment is just plain asinine.
Report Post »bravjim
Posted on June 25, 2012 at 11:04pmWhat is very, very sad is you. To say that sports are what is ruining this country is complete idiocy. Our sports is one of the things that makes this country great. Baseball has been a part of our pastime since 1871. It teaches kids not only how to compete, but how to work together as a team. Not to mention that sports provides motivation to so many kids to work harder in school, shooting for the opportunity at a scholarship, or just in making the grade and keeping the grades up so that they can compete.
Not only that, but to say that sports is what is ruining this country really undercuts the true reasons this country is in decline. Such as big spending, big government, the removal of God from schools and the resulting decay in morality and virtue, parents that think they can raise their kids by themselves just as good as if they had a partner, and other serious issues. Sports is one of the positives this country has, not one of the negatives. And for you to think otherwise makes you kind of a moron.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 10:07pmThe majority of Americans are fat dumb and stupid as we can see by their representatives they send to DC. Obama is just two notches worse than the average congressman…. This disaster is almost a hundred years in the making, as you would know if you had not wasted so much time with the trivial dribble as sports. It is a drug to amuse the population so they won’t pay attention as liberty dwindles away.
I represent the people that have tried to warn you for years as you were glued to the idiot box and your sports, saint that “America will always be number one”. Being completely ignorant of the fact that we have been moving towards socialism for the last one hundred years…
Alex Jones share the same sentiments:

@ Bravejim
Yes sports were around since the beginning, but it was kept in proper place. Listen, I enjoy a game of softball or basket ball with friends, but the endless hours spent following it on TV, or the years spent driving ones kids to practice and games, while neglecting to teach them morals, character, histor, economic or work ethic and while making them think they are accomplishing something with their team sports when less than 1% will make it to the pro’s.
The main thing accomplished is to discourage individualism, while promoting group think.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 5:23pmAre you kidding me? Get over yourselves! This little boy is precious, and I thank his loving dad for sharing this moment with us and reminding us of the little things in life that make us smile. We are an overseas active duty military family, and moments of levity like this are always greatly appreciated. Oh, and I’m pretty sure our 19-year-old daughter, who is in college in the states and is a huge Red Sox fan, was probably crying just like this little boy when she found out that one of HER heroes, Kevin Youkilis, was traded to the White Sox for Lilibridge. Some things are ageless…

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 6:08pmExactly! In addition he was manipulating the kid to make him more emotional for the video while acting like he was concerned. A good father would have put the phone down and actually hugged his child. The kid even asks “can I go?” at the end as he knew he was acting out his part for his dad. Pathetic.

Posted on June 25, 2012 at 4:45pmI love this dad. Do you hear the sweet tone he uses with his son? trying to make it better, and saying “I’m sorry” very genuinely. The dad captures endearing innocence, and it’s also funny because those of us who remember how emotional kids are at that age, know that a kid will have a good cry and then get over it just as quickly as the tears came on. Also, the fact that this dad obviously spends time watching sports and then talking about sports with his very young child is even further evidence that he is an involved dad – in my experience, that is generally hand-in-hand with good parenting.
I don‘t understand the commenters who have been so quick to criticize a person’s parenting so harshly. As a person who had a great childhood/parents, I don‘t know where you’re getting that. Seems a little sensitive, judgmental, my-child-is-my-best-friend, and there is no humor in life kind of perspective. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves, and teach our children to laugh at themselves, too. The world can’t function with everyone walking on eggshells. Jumping to conclusions and being harsh in judgment might be what’s wrong with our society.
This is not going to scar the kid, but it simply a capturing of a child’s developmental stage – call it science! If it were me, I’d be CRACKING up at this when I got older, and I’d especially treasure it once I became a parent and realized my kids are just acting the way I did as a kid.
