Hell-Skeptic Ex-Pastor Rob Bell Headed for Hollywood

Rob Bell has become quite adept at sending shockwaves through the evangelical church.

Hell Skeptic Ex Pastor Rob Bell Headed for Hollywood

His best-selling book Love Wins sparked a huge controversy earlier this year, questioning if anyone actually goes to hell. Then just a week ago Bell dropped a legion of jaws after announcing his resignation from the pulpit of the 10,000-strong Mars Hill Bible Church to pursue “strategic opportunities” related to “sharing the message of God’s love with a broader audience.”

Turns out the first of Bell’s opportunities is penning the pilot of a TV show based loosely on his life.

Stronger is about a musician, Tom Stronger, who becomes “a benefactor and spiritual guide,” according to New York’s Vulture site. Bell will executive produce and write the potential ABC series with Carlton Cuse, one half of the duo responsible for the megahit series, Lost.

Here’s how the pair hooked up, according to Vulture:

Bell and Cuse first met up a few years back, at Time magazine’s 100-most-influential-people-in-the-world dinner. They kept in touch and ultimately came up with the idea of a series that would be loosely based on Bell’s own life story as a musician who ended up founding his own church, Michigan’s Mars Hill Bible Church… Stronger is…expected to explore spiritual themes but without being as on-the-nose as other recent series that have tackled these issues, such as 7th Heaven and Touched by an Angel. There’s also expected to be a narrative twist to the project that will make it a bit unconventional, but for now, that detail is being kept secret (this show is from a Lost-ie, after all).

And this Vulture tidbit should please Love Wins fans:

While based on biblical principles, Bell’s brand of spirituality is not about hard-core evangelical, fire-and-brimstone teachings. Instead, his goal is to service folks’ spiritual needs without the overlay of religious dogma (see also: Oprah).

The hip, outspoken ex-pastor has had quite an eventful 2011. His unorthodox views on hell angered scores of evangelicals who called him everything from a heretic to a universalist. Rev. John Piper—an evangelical elder statesman, author, and pastor—weighed in with his now-famous tweet, “Farewell Rob Bell.”

Even left-leaning MSNBC host Martin Bashir couldn’t swallow Bell’s stance, charging that with Love Wins he is “amending the gospel”:

But amid the tidal wave of criticism, many Christians have supported Bell’s views—including one pastor who lost his job after sticking up for Bell.

Here‘s Bell’s trailer explaining his intent with Love Wins:

Bell reportedly told the Mars Hill congregation last Sunday that among his plans was a move to Los Angeles and a speaking tour called “Fit to Smash Ice.”

A statement on the web site of Mars Hill in Grandville, Mich., near Grand Rapids, addresses Bell’s resignation and reads, in part:

Feeling the call from God to pursue a growing number of strategic opportunities, our founding pastor Rob Bell, has decided to leave Mars Hill in order to devote his full energy to sharing the message of God’s love with a broader audience. It is with deeply mixed emotions that we announce this transition to you. We have always understood, encouraged, and appreciated the variety of avenues in which Rob’s voice and the message of God’s tremendous love has traveled over the past 12 years.

A lot of what is said about Christian beliefs based on the Bible, whether here or elsewhere, are misunderstandings. It is not true for instance, that the Bible or even many evangelicals, specifically teach that people who have never heard of Jesus are automatically consigned to hell. Yes it IS true that only through Jesus is anyone saved from hell, but that was also true for Moses despite the fact Moses never heard of Jesus (since Moses lived before Jesus was born). What the Bible does say specifically is that God has always spoken in some form or another to every person on the face of the earth. Responding to that message, whether you are a person in China staring at the stars on a clear night, or in Dallas listening to a Billy Graham sermon, is what is necessary to avoid hell.

it is appointed for people to die once–and after this, judgment– (Hebrews 9:27) Corpses can’t really face judgment so yeah, there would have to be a resurrection from THIS life for both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Love can simply be defined as selflessness. Since God is Love (selflessness) he gives love by giving himself. No one can possess God’s love but must humble the self and simply become a riverbed for him to flow to others through you. This is how one experiences God’s love by humbling the time created and therefore illusion oriented self identity and Jesus (the living word from Eternity) came to teach us how to do this.

Eternity is not a segment of time but simply Un-relative Oneness with the Eternal One. There is no eternal place of torment but one day the Eternal Fire of the Truth is going to destroy all illusion along with those who decided to walk in it because it suite the lust and desire of self and they will cease to exist even in memory after judgment.

Those who PRACTICE sin shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (New American Standard Bible)

9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not (B)inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [a]effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

I happen to think Glenn Beck has some of these views too. I doubt he would admit that but his heart sure sounds that way. You saw the Restoring Courage event right? Did you see how Glenn, even though you know he does not believe the same teachings as Muslims, Jews, and some Christians. He stood with them, and let them tell their story’s, of their own faith too. He does not condemn them like many of us do! He knows GOD was with them that day and GOD was using them all for that purpose. But most Christians unfortunately label individuals as hell-bound based on their beliefs and do not believe Jesus was sent to SAVE THE WORLD. Well I have news for them, Jesus WAS really sent to SAVE THE WORLD and he will not fail. Thy will be done.

      OK enough about GLENN BECK…

L Ray Smith does great work, tentmaker ministries has good stuff too. I also recommend J. Preston Eby and Ray Prinzing.

As far as Rob Bell I think its good that he is getting people to think but I think he is too soft in his beliefs and leaning toward a profit based religion, NOT GOOD. But at least he has opened the door for some to see who god is.

      I will close with this…
1 tim 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.
That’s right, a believer can be worse off than an unbeliever.

So then, let us assert that it is possible that God so providentially ordered the world that all persons who never hear the Gospel are those people precisely who would never have accepted it in the first place. Put another way, “Anybody who never hears the Gospel and is lost would have rejected the Gospel and been lost even if he had heard it.” So, we can make a fifth premise affirming:

    5. God has created a world which has an optimal balance between saved and lost, and those who never hear the Gospel and are lost would not have believed in it even if they had heard it.

Is this fact? No. Possible. Yes. As long as it is possible, then it is compatible that God (in His love, knowledge and power) and Hell (in its vileness, darkness, and torture) both coexist and that people who reject God can go to Hell. Further, on a specific note it seems that Scripture does touch upon this idea of optimal balance between saved-unsaved and the providential nature of God:

The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and . . . gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man He made every nation of men , that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17.24-27).

So, (3) and (4) do not seem to be necessarily true, therefore, (1) and (2) seem to not be contradictory. Thus, Mr. Bell’s God-Hell Argument is logically inconsistent.

But let us go a step further. Let us affirm that it is logically acceptable that there be an all loving all powerful God AND multitudes of people going to Hell. How can this be compatible? Well, we can affirm a third alternative – an option that, if EVEN POSSIBLE (not necessarily true) – means that God and Hell are compatible.

Third Alterntative (possibility): “It is possible that in order to achieve a multitude of saints, God had to accept a multitude of sinners.” In short, for God to have millions of saves, He had to accept the creation of millions of sinners (NOT predestined but in His foreknowing He knows how we will freely choose).

Now, the outcry may be made: God would NEVER create people who He knew would be lost, who had they heard they would have believed! But the retort can be made: How can we know such people even exist in the past, present or future? It is reasonable, it is POSSIBLE, to assume that many people who never heard or hear the Gospel would NOT have believed the Gospel even if they had heard it!!! You cannot guarantee that those un-evangelized people who never heard the Gospel WOULD have had they heard it! There is no way to know that.

So (3) is not logically necessary – therefore it falls. But what of (4)?

Argument (4): Just for argument sake let us assume that there is a possible world in which God created every person to hear the Gospel and freely accept it. Now, we need to ask, “Does God’s being all-loving oblige (compel) Him to prefer the ‘universal-salvation-world‘ over a ’some-lost-some-saved-world’?” I do not think so necessarily. Why?

It might be that a “universal-salvation-world” (USW) would have other “over-riding deficiencies“ that make it less preferable to the ”some-lost-some-saved-world” (SLSSW). How so? For example: it could be that a USW would possess only a handful of people who hear the message and are all saved -verses-a SLSSW of millions who hear, with thousands lost and thousands saved. (If God were to create any more people in the USW, then He could not guarantee that no one would not reject His grace).

So we can ask: Must God prefer the sparsely populated USW of only a handful of saved over the SLSSW multitudes of saved, even though in the SLSSW multitudes freely reject His grace and are lost (in Hell)? It does not seem that that is necessarily how God should act. “So long as God gives sufficient grace for salvation to all persons He creates, God seems no less loving for preferring a more populous world, even though that implies that some people would freely resist His every effort to save them and be damned” (William Lane Craig). So, (4) is not ne

Bell’s God-Hell Argument seems to logically be this:

    1. God is all-powerful and all-loving.
    2. Some people never hear the Gospel and are lost.

Well, there does not seem to be an explicit logical contradiction between (1) and (2). Therefore, Mr. Bell must be affirming some hidden premises or assumptions within His argument to make God and Hell incompatible (to make (1) and (2) incompatible Bell needs more premises). Let us build some further “hidden” premises or assumptions Bell must be asserting:

    3. If God is all-powerful, He can create a world in which everybody hears the Gospel and is freely saved.
    4. If God is all-loving, He prefers a world in which everybody hears the Gospel and is freely saved.

Now, if (3) and (4) are logically necessary then it follows that (1) and (2) are incompatible – therefore Mr. Bell’s God-Hell Argument must be correct. So the question is, “Is (3) and (4) necessarily true?” I do not think so.

Argument (3): It is true that God COULD create a world in which everybody hears the Gospel. But it is not true that it could be GUARANTEED that every FREE WILLED person who hears the salvation message would accept that message! You cannot logically MAKE someone FREELY do something! This is oxymoron jargon.

So you just throw out the parts of the OT that you don’t like? I don’t get it. God is a jealous, spiteful dude in the OT, then he has himself born in human form and all of a sudden changes his perspective on everything. Maybe that’s why the Jews never accepted him; he was nothing like the OT god. The OT condemned a lot of people to death for religious infractions and, if followed to the letter, would condemn the majority of the world. It seems rather convienient to be able to ignore the parts of the OT you don’t like while following the parts you do like. Did Jesus ever say to throw out the OT?

You need to do your homework on what being a Christian really is, because it’s NOT about living a “perfect” and sinless life. We have a savior that did that…….just for us, so that WHEN we fail to do so (and are invariably mocked by some DOUCHEBAG who think he (just like Satan), found a “gotcha”), we can count on His sacrifse to cover our sins.

Let us take care to still show love even to those who speak falsity – we cannot harbor hate; we love the person but hate the sin or, in this case, the argument raised by Mr. Bell.

Mr. Bell’s argument is deeper than the issue of God and Hell – it resides in His opening discussion on Gandhi. In short, the issue, which I believe Mr. Bell struggled with, is on the Destiny of the Un-evangelized. What happens to those who have never heard the salvific message of Christ? (like those in the backwoods of India, China or Africa) Well, to answer this we should not laps into universalism or pluralism as Mr. Bell has done.

First, we must affirm that Scripture teaches that God desires all to be saved: “The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance” (2 Pet. 3.9). But it also teaches that salvation comes through Christ alone: “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4.12). Mr. Bell cannot overlook passages like this and remain a true believing Christian – unless he decides to twist their meaning and corrupt the minds of people with false teachings.

Secondly, let us address, Bell’s logically inconsistent argument on God and Hell.

Bells God-Hell Argument seems to be saying this:

      1. God is all-powerful and all-loving.
      2. Some people never hear the Gospel and are lost.

Now, if this is as far as Bell’s argument goes on God-Hell I must say that between (1) and (2) there does not seem to be ANY explicit logical contradictions. Another words, he cannot be arguing logically against the existence of Hell and God if (1) and (2) are his only premises! But, in Bell’s view its seems he does think there is a contradiction – but where is it if it is not in (1) and (2)? Well, Bell must be affirming some “hidden” implicit assumptions apart from (1) and (2). He must be affirming:

      3. If God is all-powerful, He can create a world in which everybody hears the Gospel and is freely saved.
      4. If God is all-loving, He prefers a world in which everybody hears the Gospel and is freely saved.

Now IF (3) and (4) are proven to be NECESSARILY true then (1) and (2) can be established as logically incompatible! So, we can ask, “Are (3) and (4) necessarily true?” I do not think so.

Assumption (3): It seems fair to say that God COULD create a world in which everybody hears the Gospel. But it does not follow that in creating it He could GUARANTEE that people would freely follow Him (and thus not go to Hell). It is IMPOSSIBLE to GUARANTEE that all FREE will people would choose salvation (thus not going to Hell). You cannot freely force people to do something – this is oxymoron. Thus, (3) is not necessar

“TEA SUCKS” – What a well-reasoned, compelling argument. I hope you plan on working in the Obama re-election effort. If you and enough people like you do the conservatives can’t lose.

Hey Obama>Jesus– nice try, but you have no understanding of the Bible. Jesus came to fulfill the old laws with a new covenant (the new testament, God in the person of Jesus), hence, those old laws are not needed. This is the fundamental difference between Christianity and Islam, the religion your beloved Obama reveres so much. Christianity as practiced by men has also undergone a reformation. Keep scouring through that bible in hopes of zinging me though (and maybe try to understand what you’re reading in the process).

“Either God is all powerful and does not care, or God cares and is not all powerful”. Since when are those the only options. They are false options ment to deceive. God is all powerful, God cares, God gave us free will, we suffer the consequences of our choices, we suffer the consequences of others who choose to go against the will of God and the very universe he created. Call it tough love. There have been generations who have sinned against God. The commulation of generations of sin in the world have led to world suffering. God sent his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life. Mr. Bashir does not get it or believe it, neither, it would seem, does Mr. Bell. Oh well. Ignore the word of God and get more of the same – you will suffer the consequences of not believing the maker of heaven and earth. Light came in to the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light. Go ahead, continue to ignore God and see where it will get you. It is like pretending that gravity does not exist and jumping off of a cliff.

If Rob Bell believes in Jesus he is saved regardless or whether or not anyone agrees with him so what is all the fuss about? We are saved by faith alone no? If Rob Bell is wrong in his thinking why is his sin any worse than any one elses sins? I find it odd that Christians will swear up and down that we are saved by faith alone but at the same time if they disagree with someones theology that person is going to Hell. There are 30,000 (possibly more) different Christian denominations in the world and all differ on many aspects but what difference does it make if all accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour????? Either you are saved by faith alone or you are saved by faith and your theology……..and the things you do, which is it?

      @snooop1e,

      1. Teachers are held to a higher standard and judgment.
      2. Rob’s teachings are EXTREMELY dangerous in a world filled with people looking for an excuse to NOT change their behavior. Rob has handed it to them on a silver platter.
      3. He uses the cloak of religion to validate his rebellion against the very teachings of Jesus – using Christ’s name to validate his lies.

I’m no expert on this individual or how Christians view Heaven & Hell. Coming from a Jewish background I’m not sure about Heaven or Hell but I know there is possibly an afterlife. Everyone has their own views on life and death.

That’s very true. But it’s also true that for the Christian doctrine there is no either/or scenario. Preach what the Bible clearly teaches or you are a heretic, and not representative of Christ.

If you don’t already have one, get a copy of “The Chumash” The commentaries on the different Parashas will give you a lot of insight into the Jewish Sages. I have one, and I am not Jewish, but I really like to see the understanding behind the verses of scipture from a Jewish perspective.

@VENNOYE: I have the Stone edition of the Tanach (Hebrew bible), A book on the Talmud, a book on Jewish laws, and so on. Most of the books come from the company called Artscroll. Which is a Orthodox Jewish website.

Those are good…The Chumash is the Stone edition from Artscroll. I also have The Complete Artscroll Siddur, and Ethics of the Sages: Pirke Avot (not from Artscroll though).
When I started digging for the basis of my faith, Isaiah 48:1 ¶ Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.
jumped out at me….so I had to go back and study and learn about your faith to get to the root of my own!!
Think what you are doing is great!! You have such a rich heritage behind you..know you will enjoy seeing how much your people have blessed the world!!
