Is this the iPad 3 backshell? This supposedly leaked photo is floating around the Internet. (Image via 9to5 Mac)
Last summer and fall we brought you coverage of the iPhone 5 rumors and leaked photos, only to have Apple announce everything but an iPhone 5 at its highly anticipated event held in October. The rumor mill is churning again but it’s not for iPhone 5 — well, there are rumors for that too but what we’re talking about is the iPad 3.
A couple photos have been leaked and there are reports that the new tablet could be available by March. The Verge points out that the iPad 2 was released in early March last year, suggesting March could be the drop dead date this year. Although, it also cleverly speculates that the last iPad was released on a Wednesday (March 2, 2011 — available by March 11). With 29 days in February thanks to the leap year this year, that puts the 29th on a Wednesday, which The Verge says could be paired with a theme like “It’s time to leap ahead.”
All Things D, though, is pretty firm in its belief that the announcement will come the first week of March.
But enough about speculation of the timing of its release. What are some of the actual specs rumored to be featured on the iPad 3? Here are a few from The Verge according to “people familiar with the product”:
- Double resolution display: “a true iPad Retina Display, clocking in at 2048 x 1536″
- A one millimeter increase in thickness
- The A6 CPU (central processing unit) could support a more powerful GPU (graphics processing unit)
- A supposedly larger camera lens
ComputerWorld states that it has heard the battery will be larger as well.
Of course, much of this is speculation, based on information from unnamed sources and leaked photos.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 10:58amI would still rather have my Core i7 powered laptop. I can do so much more with it. I have all the entertainment options that the tablets do and I can also use it do do my job and make more money. I like money, don’t you?
I can also do video and artwork on it (my hobby) and not on “the cloud” where some jerkoff hacker might be able to hack into and steal. Not really sold on “the cloud”. I like a local hard drive that I own.
Hey, if a tablet were a little cheaper, like the netbooks originally were, I might buy one just to have something setting around that I didn’t have to open a lid on and wait a few seconds for it to boot up……..ha ha or maybe not?

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:12amFor real work…. I’d rather have a desktop. For real work on the go… I’d rather have a laptop. For games… I’d rather have a desktop (big monitor, mouse and keyboard). For games on the go I’d rather have a gaming laptop (again, mouse and keyboard). Plus with a laptop I have a real hard drive, real interface options, etc.
But when I’m sitting down on the couch and I want to cruise the net, or I’m on vacation and I want to look something up on the net (it’s incredible how the internet has become so essential) or just stream a movie from xfinity…. etc…. the iPad is nice. It has definitely found a niche in my electronic life….

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 4:54pmDRFROST has got it right, except that there are better tablets out there than the iPad…
Dell sent my dad a windows 7-powered tablet to try and we were laughing out @$$es off as we watched it run through a full boot cycle. Then again when eventually I got a BSOD, and couldn’t select a boot option (like “start windows normally) since there was no hardware keyboard. What were they thinking??

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:55pmThe reason I bought an iPad was because the weight of carrying my laptop around for work was causing my shoulder joint and my elbow to separate. I paired it with a Kensington keyboard and have been using it quite well. Our house also has two Intel iMacs, plus a few Apple laptops. My on site work is done on the iPad and then emailed to one of the iMacs. It works out well.

Most people choose one or the other, so you don’t see a lot comparisons.
I love my ipad. I use it for professional artwork. After an accident that crushed my drawing hand, I’m happy and grateful for a device that helps me continue my work at the speed and efficiency that I had before the accident.

I’ve had more than I can count and have kind of a mac museum in my man cave. I stopped trying to convert my friends from the dark side (pc). It’s like trying to beg someone to leave a burning house. Posted on February 10, 2012 at 12:08pmI think it’s called brainwashing.
Report Post »patriotfirst1776
Posted on February 10, 2012 at 12:52pmAhh, it is insulting to insinuate that people who use Apple products and in any way, shape or form “brainwashed”. It shows shallow thinking and true lack of insight into the real world value of Apple products for people who rely upon them in real-world situations.
I have run several global ad agencies and found that the Apple line of products were the most durable (don’t mind paying a bit more for THAT – it is referred to as “value-per-dollar-spent” and increases your ROI over the life of the product cycle). Also, their software usability in real life situations is the best we found. The ease of training new hires increased when they used Apple products. The syncing features between platforms alone saved us so much time and aggrevation (Time=money).
So, before you pull out your “flame thrower” …. put the products into action and see how they work in VERY intense, corporate environments. That is the true test of a product’s effectiveness.
For you to insinuate that Apple users are brainwashed is downright silly. Then, again, it is so easy to sit in a tree and throw nuts down on the people below.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 10:11amHumm that comment seems a bit hypocritical…you bought a different type unit from CHINA but screw Apple because their quality products are made in China? Also your second class item wouldn‘t even be on the market if Apple didn’t innovate the iPad in the first place. Common sense?
Report Post »PapaKOA
Posted on February 10, 2012 at 11:41amThe only thing innovative about the iPad was how they marketed it. Hewlett Packard and IBM were making tablet PC’s a decade ago.
