Here Are Five of the Most Expensive Military Weapons on Earth

Earlier this month, The Blaze brought you the single most expensive piece of military hardware ever — the new Ford Class USS Gerald Ford Aircraft Carrier.

But military spending in 2010 was $693 billion — nearly half of all military spending on earth. So other than aircraft carriers, where is all that money going?

Take a look below to get a good idea. With an eye to the dollars and cents of major U.S. military programs, the website 24/7 Wall Street has put together a list of the most expensive U.S. military weapons. Cost figures come from documents published by the Department of Defense and the Government Accountability Office.

Check them out. All are amazing pieces of hardware, but you’ll have to determine for yourself if any of them could be considered a bargain:

U.S. Military Weapons Include V 22 Osprey, Trident II, Arleigh Burke Class, F 22 Raptor

1) F-22 Raptor

> Type: stealth fighter jet
> Total Cost: $79.2 billion
> R&D: $40.5 billion
> Procurement Cost: $37.9 billion
> Total Units: 188
> Price per Unit: $211.6 million

Many people say the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is the best fighter jet in the world, hands down. One thing is for sure — it’s the most expensive at $211 million per unit. The DOD budget has 188 on its current budget. Other countries want them, but so far Congress has banned the sale of Raptors to any country.

The Raptor is a hyper-maneuverable, stealth-enabled fighter and can eliminate targets long before they even know it’s in the sky. Equipped with two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, six medium-range air-to-air missiles, a 20 mm gatling gun, two 1,000 pound bombs and eight 250 pound bombs, it gives the U.S. complete air dominance capabilities.

U.S. Military Weapons Include V 22 Osprey, Trident II, Arleigh Burke Class, F 22 Raptor

2) Virginia Class Submarine

> Type: nuclear submarine
> Total Cost: $83.7 billion
> R&D: $7.2 billion
> Procurement Cost: $76.6 billion
> Total Units: 30
> Price per Unit: $2,552.6 million

The Virginia Class subs are among the most useful strategic tools in the DOD arsenal.  These nuclear submarines can carry 38 different weapons, including Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, mines and torpedoes. While eight are currently in operation, the Department of Defense has 30 of these $2.5 billion mobile undersea missile platforms budgeted.

Here is a video overview of the Virginia Class Sub, courtesy of the Military Channel:

U.S. Military Weapons Include V 22 Osprey, Trident II, Arleigh Burke Class, F 22 Raptor

3 ) Trident II Missile

> Type: ballistic missile
> Total Cost: $53.2 billion
> R&D: $16.8 billion
> Procurement Cost: $35 billion
> Total Units: 561
> Price per Unit: $65.7 million

The Trident II is the most advanced U.S. Navy ballistic missile. Equipped with a thermonuclear warhead, the Trident II is carried by most Ohio-class submarines. According to 24/7:

“The missile is 44 feet long and weighs 80 tons. Equipped with a three-stage rocket, the missile is capable of traveling at more than 13,000 miles per hour, and has a range of 4,600 miles. The Department of Defense currently has 561 Tridents on the budget, each worth more than $65 million, not counting research and development costs.”

U.S. Military Weapons Include V 22 Osprey, Trident II, Arleigh Burke Class, F 22 Raptor

4) V-22 Osprey

> Type: tiltrotor transport plane
> Total Cost: $57.8 billion
> R&D: $13.6 billion
> Procurement Cost: $43.5 billion
> Total Units: 459
> Price per Unit: $95.2 million

The  V-22 Osprey is a hybrid plane/helicopter design — called a “tiltrotor aircraft” – which means it can engage in extremely short take-offs and landings, as well as hover in place.

But when the rotors come forward, it has much longer range than a helicopter. The Osprey is a transport craft that can travel up to 390 nautical miles without refueling at speeds surpassing 260 miles per hour. The 459 Ospreys include in the Pentagon budget cost a cool $95.2 million dollars each.

U.S. Military Weapons Include V 22 Osprey, Trident II, Arleigh Burke Class, F 22 Raptor

5) Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer

> Type: destroyer
> Total Cost: $101.8 billion
> R&D: $5.1
> Procurement Cost: $96.6 billion
> Total Units: 75
> Price per Unit: $1,299.3 million

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, also known as the DDG 5, has been part of the U.S. Navy’s fleet since 1995. These days there are about 60 in active service, with 15 more in the DOD budget. At more than 500 feet long, stem to stern, the larger generation of Arleigh Burkes displace roughly 9,200 tons, with 350 servicemen on each vessel.

The newest generation is equipped with two vertical launching systems for tomahawk missiles, a 5″ gun, torpedoes and an advanced mine-detection system.

For even more super-pricey weapons systems, you can check out a longer list here via 24/7 Wall Street.

From a guy who did a tour on the class before the Virginia, I can say that a lot of what is spent on the building of the ships is SAFETY, for both the men and equipment. Unfortunately, or actually not, proving that safety is very expensive, ( IE NDT testing, pressure tests, periodic maintenance….ETC, goes on and on) Nothing much worse than telling a loved one that your son or daughter died from lack of oversight/maintenance.

That said, I have also seen a myriad amount of overspending, and product overrun, or waste. Its a big business, and a big spender in general, on all lvls, if the gov was private, it would be out of business in 1 quarter.

As someone who worked DoD, I can tell you ONE of the biggest cost of any project undertaken for then United States Navy goes towards pay and benifits for the union ship-yard workers.. Retirement cost for Newport News Shipyard and Norfolk Naval now outpace their active pay-roll by over 20%. And Affirmative action doesn’t help cost, either…..

That $100 billion wasted on “green” assets would pay for 750 F-35 “Joint Strike” fighter jets or 40% of last year’s net cost for Medicare … so it IS a meaningful amount.

Long past time to be bragging about our superior military. If after ten years in battle with fourth world forces brings you no closer to a resolution than when you started, a little humility is in order. Especially when we refuse to pay for the things we brag about and pass the bill on to future generations…we have the best military and healthcare in the world! And we are only borrowing a trillion dollars and some change per year to pay for it!

Unfortunately we live in a world where such weapons are necessary.

New Zealand would not be able to buy these weapons, and as such NZ, and the rest of the free world for that matter, owes the USA and the American taxpayer an enormous personal debt for this investment.

I, for one, thank the US taxpayer from the bottom of my heart, and I bless the USA for this arsenal and the freedoms that it continues to defend. While our military contributions in Afganistan and previous conflicts throughout the last century are tiny compared to America’s, I think that most of my countrymen and women are proud to do what we can and of what we have done (socialists excluded, obviously).

(in)SANE_MAN: Considering that Barry did nothing but follow the George Bush playbook on Iraq and Afghanistan, there is not much that can be said about him that was truly his idea. Oops, I forgot, there was the change of the ROE in Afghanistan which made it much more difficult for our troops to get at the Taliban terrorists. He also change the intent of the war from wiping out the Taliban to “protecting the Afghan people”. In effect changing the war from one of offense to defense. He also screwed up the negotiations for the follow-on Status Of Forces Agreement with Iraq which forced a complete withdrawal from the country instead of the “training and security” forces which Bush wanted left in place to help prevent the resurgence of violence we‘re seeing in Iraq now that we’ve cut and run.

On the other hand, massive fiat money creation to pay for unnecessary military hardware, causing inflation and malinvestment on a rather large scale could bring down the entire US society and force 330 MILLION Americans back into poverty as the money becomes worthless.

Which is TRULY the greater threat? “Our national debt is our biggest national security threat,” said Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I’d listen to that man.

Umm….I get the feeling from your comment that you don’t like all that stuff. Of course I don’t know what country you hail from….but the fact is this….the development of those weapons employs millions of people…including some of the smartest and brightest on earth. Many many aspects of the technology winds up having a fabulous purpose in the medical community and other areas that save lives and make living a much longer and healthier experience. Yes the United States spends serious money on it’s military complex….but the next time you have a bad headache and your physician directs you to receive a modern MRI or some nuclear based diagnostic equipment….it would not be a conflict of your own disdain for American weaponry to thank your lucky stars you have access to such life saving technology. Sometimes I just don’t get folks who think like you might think given your comment above. Would you rather live in Somalia or Afghanistan or some other “backwards” thinking broke a$$ country? Do you really think Obamacare is going to make health care better by spurring research and development all by itself????? Seriously? Don’t be a military hater…..our military saves lives…including yours. Nearly every modern device you can think of has it’s roots deeply wrapped around a prior military application or as a result of some military research. And yes…that costs money. So does giving people food stamps so they can slouch for another month.

Why do people think its okay for the government to prop up jobs in the military industry yet everything else brings cries of socialism? This stuff isn’t securing our border. It isn’t helping us find home grown terror cells. It isn’t making killing extremists any easier, although admittedly I guess since the planes faster it will get there a minute or two faster (hooray worth the money!).The Osprey alone had its budget balloon to over 200%. Fiscal conservatives should be sickened by the immense waste going on here. No one can question the technological superiority but the price gouging is part of the reason we have a 15 trillion dollar debt and patriotism for how awesome the military is is blinding people to how much they are screwing us. Besides, I’d rather see us order one less plane and fund more CIA operations and start taking out bastards like those motorcyclists did to that Iranian Scientist.

As an example Principle #5 of the Rio de Janeiro report held way back in ‘92 that Obama made law states: All States and all people shall cooperate in the essential task of eradicating poverty as an indispensable requirement for sustainable development, in order to decrease the disparities in standards of living and better meet the needs of the majority of the people of the world.

SOCOM usually has smaller numbers of relatively inexpensive specialized weapons…relatively inexpensive since they normally only require small arms, radios, intel, etc. The big bucks items for SOCOM are included in such items as the Virginia class boats (which are optimized for SEAL operations) and such items as the Osprey which can be used for personnel delivery and exfiltration. Our favorite spooks are not being neglected.

I hate to nitpick, but since I didn’t see the article on the Gerald Ford, I wanted to point it out here. The Gerald Ford (CVN-78) is not a Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier. It is the lead ship in a brand new class of Air Craft Carriers.

I wasn’t aware that the follow-on to the Nimitz carriers was already being built. The H.W. Bush is just now coming into the fleet and will be testing many of the new systems that will go on to the “Ford” class carriers…such as the magnetic catapults, etc.

“ chicoms ” n. A huge country, with a huge military, located in asia, (goes by the name “china”), which has a horrible “communist” government. Abbreviated to the very familiar “chicom”. To most americans it denotes the brutal, hateful, murderous, inhumane, antihuman government of china. Not to be confused with the billions of wonderful, peace loving, beautiful people of china. Get it!!

For your edification. ChiCom. A noun. The government of a huge country with a huge military, located in Asia. The sole purpose of said government is to continue the enslavement, the butchery, the murder and torture of its citizenry, and the propagation of its own ideology and welfare over the welfare of it’s citizens.
Can you wrap your head around that, Mr. sanity ? If not perhaps history lessons and current events class‘ wouldn’t be wasted on you.

Barry is already authorizing another trade of nuclear scientists with China. The last time that happened the Chinese were able to steal much information on our latest nuclear weapons before they were detected.

Much of that billion dollar re-election fund that Barry has was also provided by the Chinese (through “anonymous” donations) and this is the expected payback.

Yes we DO have all that stuff. BUT we sank almost all our ASW platforms when they got rid of the Spruance Class Destroyers.

We’ve got WWII destroyers in the moth ball fleet, but we sank ships built in the 1970s. I often wonder how much money we could save if we actually THOUGHT about spending decisions.

The latest gen Destroyers and Cruisers have superior ASW capabilities. I was on FFG46 but many of my friends went to the newer ships and I was blown away by CIC. All of these ships have very capable sonar suites, they no longer have to use Tubes and analog equipment. I can get into details, I used to be a Sonar Tech.

      * Make securing our borders the top national security priority.
      * Avoid long and expensive land wars that bankrupt our country by using constitutional means to capture or kill terrorist leaders who helped attack the U.S. and continue to plot further attacks.
      * Guarantee our intelligence community’s efforts are directed toward legitimate threats and not spying on innocent Americans through unconstitutional power grabs like the Patriot Act.
      * End the nation-building that is draining troop morale, increasing our debt, and sacrificing lives with no end in sight.
      * Follow the Constitution by asking Congress to declare war before one is waged.
      * Only send our military into conflict with a clear mission and all the tools they need to complete the job – and then bring them home.
      * Ensure our veterans receive the care, benefits, and honors they have earned when they return.
      * Revitalize the military for the 21st century by eliminating waste in a trillion-dollar military budget.
      * Prevent the TSA from forcing Americans to either be groped or ogled just to travel on an airplane and ultimately abolish the unconstitutional agency.

And anymore, the average infantryman is a technician in his craft. It’s no longer just a matter of giving a man a rifle, teaching him to shoot straight, and sending him into battle. The weapons are much higher tech, the comm systems can keep him in constant contact with his squad leader, and newer systems are being researched all the time….It won’t be too many more years and the science fiction of the “mobile infantry” may be the infantry of today. The average “grunt in the field” takes over a year to train up as opposed to the infantryman of WWII who could be turned from civilian to soldier in a matter of a few months.

Hey i find this technology as fascinating as the next guy…and i believe in coming down hard on those that attack us (not their neighbors or the same colored skin people but actually the attackers). But what do you think happens when you just provide no assistance to those in need? You end up with a massive mess. A bigger mess than the one we have. We can do both if we do it intelligently. Reform is always good, but social services are not wholesale a bad idea in all regards. To be fair you did say “most”.
