Over the weekend, we were warned of a solar storm that would bombard Earth’s magnetic field with particles from Saturday through Sunday. Although it was only expected to have a minor effect — if any — on the power grid, airlines and other systems influenced by such storms, it at least resulted in magnificent auroral events seen from the U.S.-Canadian border and northern Europe.

Here are some of the top time-lapsed videos showing the aurora borealis caused by the charged particles from the sun interacting with our magnetic fields.

Sheboygan, Wisc.:
Pitts Meadows, British Colombia:

Dubuque, Iowa:
The solar flare that sends the highly charged particles toward Earth at 3 million miles per hour was the sixth solar storm in 2012, none of which have had a significant impact on the daily activities of earthlings. The storm was part of the sun’s normal 11-year cycle of solar activity, which is supposed to reach peak storminess next year.
In severe cases, solar storms can cause power blackouts, damage satellites and disrupt GPS signals and high-frequency radio communications. Airlines are sometimes forced to reroute flights to avoid the extra radiation around the north and south poles brought on by solar storms.

what I want to know is the time lapse factor. Was the 30 second film 2minutes, half an hour, two hours? I have not seen this phenomenon in person and just would like to know.
Does anybody know???????????????

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 10:58amOf course it’s mankind that regulates temperature on earth. Not that giant self-sustaining and volatile nuclear blaze that’s so large a million earths could fit inside. How preposterous to think otherwise!

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 11:56amI don”t think anyone is claiming that mankind regulates the temperarure on Earth, but rather the sum total of human activity has an effect on the climate. That the human population has an effect on climate is indisputable. The amount of influence, however, is highly debatable as we all know.

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 12:31pm@Soul — actually there are climate scientists who would debate you on that one. Have you read: “Unstoppable Global Warming”? It details how the earth warms and cools quite naturally on a cycle of 1500 yrs or so.

Report Post »Al Gore and his followers seem to think so. They were the people who coined the word “man-made global worming.” Our contribution to earth’s climate is extremely minute. Volcanos spew more C02 in a year than any factory. The sun and oceans control our climate and weather.

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 1:54pmEven if global warming/cooling IS man-made, the cost to cease or reverse that change is far greater than the damage done to the Earth. Further, it is impossible to prove that those changes weren’t going to happen anyway, so the best possible plan is to industrialize and create as much wealth as possible.
Man adapts. It won’t be the end of the world. Really.

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 12:18pmHe is such a magnificent Artist! Mind-boggling when you consider how most of His art will never be observed by anyone but Himself (for example, no two snowflakes alike, yet no one can see all that amazing variety except Him). He truly loves His creation to put all that variety and beauty into it.
