Glitch? Here‘s How To Beat Wikipedia’s Blackout

At midnight last night, a long list of influential websites like Wikipedia, BoingBoing, The912-Project, and even some of the Occupy Wall Street sites have “gone dark” in a brief protest of House Bill 3261 or the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

If you do visit Wikipedia’s homepage today, this is what you will see.

Wikipedia Blackout Work Around, Cheat Method

Wikipedia is hoping that the denial of access to the free online encyclopedia will inspire millions to reach out to their representatives and voice displeasure over the proposed legislation.

The block is irritating, but it is possible to get past it and still use the site.

If you absolutely MUST search Wikipedia today, here is how you do it.

As the site starts loading, hit the ESC key – the good old home page will appear.

When you type your search data into the form and hit the enter key, you must also hit the ESC key again.

We tested it this morning, searching for “GBTV.” Here’s what we saw.

Wikipedia Blackout Work Around, Cheat Method

As you can see, the blockade can be broken, it just requires a little manual dexterity.

If you are not familiar with the details of SOPA, CBS News has a handy summary of the bill, why it matters to Hollywood and the media producers, and the reasons that many in the online world oppose it.

According to CBS News, this is where the legislation stands;

The Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote on PIPA on January 24.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, who sponsored SOPA, said Tuesday he expects the committee to continue work on the House bill in February.

All of the blocks should be lifted tomorrow.

What is wrong with you Blaze?? Don’t tell people how to do this! Nobody absolutely has to see anything on Wikipedia today. You’re ruining the whole point of the blackout, which is to draw attention to how SOPA and PIPA and the like are garbage attempts at fascistic power grabs.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! And seriously, Glenn, if you don’t speak out about how wrong and unconstitutional these bills are, why should I believe when you talk about anything else??

The only people supporting these bills are the elite of the movie and music industries, and the politicians they’re bought off. These bills will hurt and hamper EVERYONE else, and if you don‘t think you’ll be affected, just wait until your favorite website is blocked because one of their competitors made a bogus claim that your favorite website is using copyrighted material.

And remember I said the word CLAIM. Because that’s the kind of power that SOPA and PIPA has, you don‘t need to prove in a court of law that they’re doing something wrong, you just need to accuse them of it!

Shame on you blaze for reporting this! If you had any integrity, your site would be blacked out today too.

Whats wrong with cheating with the Esc key? If Wikipedia is against SOPA that means they’re cool with illegal content and piracy right? That doesn‘t mean I’m for this bill, but it‘s totally obvious to these sites why they’re against it. So why can’t we pirate Wikipedia too?

You guys clearly missed the first 10 minutes of the show today, where he said that he doesn‘t like the bill and doesn’t want it passed.

That said, I’m sure there are enough annoyed people out there who want to use the site and are going to figure this out anyway.

Personally, I’m against the idea of giving more control over the Internet to anyone, *but* (let’s face it) online piracy IS an issue. The answer is to use laws already in existance, not to create a new one.

Of course, that option wouldn’t allow anyone in D.C. attatch riders for pork or one Statist program or another. Of course, we wouldn’t want that to happen (sarcastically speaking, of course).

      @MarkGL

“If Wikipedia is against SOPA that means they’re cool with illegal content and piracy right?”

Really? I’m sorry, but what an incredibly naive and sophomoric way of looking at the issue. They (Wikipedia, not to mention hundreds of other sites) are against the bill because of the broad scope and unconstitutional power it gives. Don’t believe me? Read about it for yourself at http://americancensorship.org/infographic.html and http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/technical-examination-of-sopa-and.html

Or if you’re not going to bother with that, at least read this from wondermark.com “Massive entertainment companies, mainly movie studios, have presented these bills to Congress as a means to curb online piracy of their content. But the bills are written in a very broad, dangerous way.

To combat the problem of movie piracy, SOPA and PIPA give the government the power to firewall the entire U.S. internet.

This like planting dynamite under a busy highway bridge in order to catch fleeing burglars, then handing the trigger to someone who hates cars.

      What’s likely to happen?

      • What burglars there are, will take another route. (SOPA/PIPA do not target pirates, but rather sites that link to alleged piracy. Real pirates can easily sidestep the restrictions.)

      • Law-abiding business trucks, scared osf the dynamite, will ALSO take another route. (The huge legal and financial burden of compliance with the new law will discourage startups, stifling ind

      • The dynamite is likely to go off whenever the trigger person sees anybody who looks slightly suspicious — burglar or not. (Claims of “piracy” could be used as a weapon against websites to silence them for competitive or political reasons.)

Despite the fact that nobody in Congress can agree on health care, the budget, or anything else, bought-and-paid-for politicians from both sides of the aisle have lined up to defend these bills. It’s pretty disgusting. Movie piracy is simply not more important than the safety and integrity of the entire Internet, which is my whole livelihood.” – from wondermark.com

And no, XYSKALLA, I’m not telling The Blaze what they can and cannot post, I’m saying that its *wrong* of them to show how to defeat the blackout. Its no different than any of the (minuscule amounts of) reporting on the blackout for SOPA by other news agencies that I’ve heard. NONE of them have said that there are sites doing a blackout in PROTEST of SOPA…they never use that word protest, they only say something like “drawing attention to”.

I‘m not saying it shouldn’t happen. I’m saying its *wrong*. Most of you people who’ll roll your eyes and look away from something like this would be setting yourselves on fire if Congress was trying to do this with the printed press. Well WAKE UP PEOPLE! I just loaded all the pages that I thought I would need onto different tabs before the blackout last night. Guess that I didn’t need to go through all that trouble.

I’m against SOPA, but I am not in favor of illegal content. The problem with SOPA is that it is too broad and doesn’t really take into account the way that the Internet works today. For example, although I have two domains of my own, most of my writing is done on sites that also host work done by thousands of other people. If one of those thousands of people is a pirate and posts things that they should not, the entire site could be taken down, along with that source of income for me and thousands of other honest people.

Additionally, there are other things that SOPA doesn’t take into consideration:

      1) The vast amount of content on the Internet from years ago. It is nearly impossible to scour everything that you wrote for the last 10-15 years (if you’ve been writing for the Internet that long; I have) and make sure that you didn’t post something that offends the law years ago.
      2) Other people passing along copyrighted material as Public Domain or Creative Commons. Many content producers use these works legally, but if someone posts a copyrighted object as creative commons, people might innocently use them.
      3) All it takes is an accusation and your site gets taken down for a while. Great to use on your enemies.

This law won’t just affect the piracy of movies, software, and music.

I agree that Glenn seems to be transitioning from a more libertarian stance to a theocracy. This is where I always split ways with conservatives/ republicans.
Just today he was talking about the founders and how they wanted a libertarian society but the only reason why it would work is because they had morality through their beleif in God. He can’t support a a full libertatian movement becasue people are not moral enough. I really would like him and Rick Santorum to clarify if they supports legislating morality. That is my biggest concern with Santorum and slowly becoming a concern I have with Glenn.

I detect hypocrisy here…, or perhaps you have no respect for copyright laws. I mean if copyrighted material is being ‘stolen’ (by unauthorized usage), then what is your basis for complaint about such activity being curtailed. Is the problem that YOU want to make unauthorized use of copyrighted material?

I am an anti-big-government person, but a primary responsibility of government is to protect private property, and that is central to this issue. I am surprised that so many are knee-jerk reacting to this as ‘limiting free speech’, ‘limiting access’, etc., etc.

There needs to be some rational discussion about the issue. The rights of the property owners legally, and more importantly, morally, supercede some ego-engaged ‘need-to-know’ of everyone that sits down at a keyboard.

On the contrary, I am quite opposed to piracy and copyright violation. I am a web application developer and I have had work stolen from me before; I understand the sins of such violations and I go out of my way to avoid using other people‘s works without permission because I wouldn’t want it done to me.

The problem with SOPA isn’t that it protects copyright owners. It’s that it goes too far in assaulting web hosts and places an unfair and unreasonable burden on them and it opens the door for heavier government regulation of the Internet.

There are already laws on the books that will allow you to sue the pants off of someone that steals your material and posts it online. Does that work 100% of the time? No, but neither do laws against shoplifting.

To expand on the shoplifting analogy: If SOPA were against shoplifting, it would allow Matel to shut down Walmart because someone stole a barbie from the store. (Not a perfect example, but it goes against the host for the crimes of the user, so it’s not a terrible analogy.)

Youtube actively peruses copyright violations as do many other user-based content sites. This law would effectively shut down such websites and label them as piracy havens.

I understand that people pirating movies and music all day long via bittorrent and the like is bad for the industry and I don’t condone such actions. But a big government overreaching law is NOT what is needed. ISPs are already beginning to crack down on piracy d

oops… my textwall hit the character limit. Continued….

ISPs are already beginning to crack down on piracy due to bandwidth limitations as is. Netflix is eradicating a lot of piracy due to the legal availability of instant movies. Music purchasing services are becomming prefered methods of getting songs. The free market is correcting much of the problem that SOPA seeks to go nuclear on.

Many news and political sites could be shut down under SOPA when it is clearly not the intent of the law. If it could only target blatant theft, that would be one thing, but SOPA is a power grab that is simply not justified.

We have given and received nothing in return. In fact it seems that the courts are now taking the few things that have leaked into the public domain and taken them back out.

And about the “…and just support christian films and christian actors,” we aren’t all the same religion or even type of christian as you, so don’t try to ram it down our throats. I sure hope you aren’t implying we need the government to regulate what films can be shown…

The powerful want, and must have, control of the internet. It is too large a weapon for citizens, because it enables us to check and report the real truth instantaneously. When there was no internet, they controlled the message. With the internet, we control the message.

What do you expect for free? Government needs to stay out of the internet and stop trying to control its content so they can dish out more propaganda. I’m tired of “but the children” “the children!” Parents need to be monitoring their children not government. Are we going to become China, who blocks everything except the propaganda they want fed to their people? In China, the government controls the internet and its contents. If you are caught going somewhere you aren’t suppose to be, you can face some serious charges, up to and including death. Congress needs to get its powers back from these “ABC” bureaucratic types, they are becoming irrelevant.

It’s not about WIKI at all, its about our Government and control. We are supposed to be a free Nation and the reason we are losing our freedoms is because as you say “It doesn’t effect me who cares” It is the principle of a free society granted by our Constitution to protect ALL of our rights. You will be the first one to cry when YOUR freedoms and rights disappear. If you can,t see that this Administration is trying to control every aspect of our lives. Then I truly feel sorry for you.

Ha .. but really we should contact our representatives and stop this soon .. it’s not just about sharing copy-written material, it’s limiting your ability to get information … this will limit stuff getting out and it will again be controlled by the few. There are enough laws that protect the copyrights … enforce them. Anyway all this will do is hurt the nations hosting companies, since effected sites will flock to freedom overseas … therefore losing American jobs!!

This is about Obama and his ilk getting control of the internet. It‘s not about copyright infringement just like Obamacare isn’t about health care. We conservatives get our news from the internet. Can we rely on the “news” networks for the truth? The internet is our conduit to the truth and libs want to get their foot in the door and this is the way.

      Ohh Please

Anyone that uses the Phrase “If you have do nothing wrong you have nothing to fear” is a moron and should not be listened to

Further anyone that has followed the absolute ABUSE of CURRENT law content providers have done knows that SOPA is a TERRIBLE law and should be opposed by EVERYONE.

Further if you have any regards to online Security, esp DNSSEC, then you also know that SOPA makes the Internet Less Secure

So save the Hyperbolic “save the children” non-sense, only a moron would buy in to that

Fortunately, even Godaddy came around and dropped their support of SOPA after a huge backlash. These charges of Wikipedia and Google supporting the exploitation of minors is just an absurd charge. I would try to make a compelling argument against it but if you believe that then I don’t see how any amount of logic can get through.

Saying that Wikipedia supports that is like saying that Obamacare will fix the healthcare system or that Gingrich will clean up politics.

Please. I’ve never searched Wikipedia. There are far too many places with accurate information much more in depth than some “honor” system definition derivative.

What is it that you need to see or hear to prove to you that their “IS” no individual honor any longer? Dogma, indoctrination and the totalitarian state are all that matter any more. You won’t get 100%of the truth 100% of the time from a socialist philosophy corporation.

@Westcoastpatriot, What college are you attending? With your errors in grammar, I’m surprised a reputable college would admit you. Your phrase, “so bad at inaccuracies” is nonsensical mess. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, no teacher above fifth grade will accept an encyclopedia as a reference. Encyclopedias are brief summations of generally available knowledge over a broad number of subjects. A university would certainly not allow you to site any encyclopedia, not just Wikipedia; but you are able to begin your research with an encyclopedia, to familiarize yourself with subject before getting into serious materials. Wikipedia also has original source material referenced in the footnotes which could be sited if you actually read the material. College professors may no let students use Wikipedia, however, there are growing numbers of college professors who assign the writing and submitting of articles to Wikipedia as a learning tool. The professors want their students to be able to research and explain complex subjects, often scientific, in at a middle school level, to people unfamiliar with the concept.

I use Wikipedia all the time, and sometimes as a source (I don’t write college papers though). Of course, Wikipedia is never my only source of information; many of the times when I use it in articles, I usually am using it to verify something that I already know or to find a hard-to-dispute fact (when did Steve Jobs die, in what year did the Spanish Armada attack England, etc.).

While I don’t write pages for Wikipedia, I do edit the pages whenever I see a mistake. I generally only have to make minor edits, although I did have to remove vandalism once.
