Here‘s the History Behind Occupy Wall Street’s Creepy Guy Fawkes Mask

NEW YORK (AP) — Look at a photo or news clip from around the world of Occupy protesters and you’ll likely spot a handful of people wearing masks of a cartoon-like man with a pointy beard, closed-mouth smile and mysterious eyes.
The mask is a stylized version of Guy Fawkes, an Englishman who tried to bomb the British Parliament on Nov. 5, 1605.
“They’re very meaningful masks,” said Alexandra Ricciardelli, who was rolling cigarettes on a table outside her tent in New York‘s Zuccotti Park two days before the anniversary of Fawkes’ failed bombing attempt.
“It’s not about bombing anything; it’s about being anonymous – and peaceful.”
To the 20-year-old from Keyport, N.J., the Fawkes mask “is about being against The Man – the power that keeps you down.”
But history books didn‘t lead to the mask’s popularity: A nearly 30-year-old graphic novel and a five-year-old movie did.
“V for Vendetta,” the comic-based movie whose violent, anarchist antihero fashions himself a modern Guy Fawkes and rebels against a fascist government has become a touchstone for young protesters in mostly western countries. While Warner Brothers holds the licensing rights to the Guy Fawkes mask, several protesters said they were using foreign-made copies to circumvent the corporation.
Yet whether the inspiration is the comic, the movie or the historical figure, the imagery – co-opted today by everyone from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to the hacker group Anonymous – carries stronger connotations than some of the Occupy protesters seem to understand.
While Fawkes’ image has been romanticized over the past 400 years, he was a criminal who tried to blow up a government building. It would be hard to imagine Americans one day wearing Timothy McVeigh masks to protest the government or corporate greed.
Lewis Call, an assistant history professor at California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo, said the masked protesters are adopting a powerful symbol that has shifted meaning through the centuries.
“You can seize hold of it for any political purpose you want,” he said. “That’s the real power of it.”
Fawkes was a Catholic insurrectionist executed for the bombing attempt. In the years immediately following his execution, Nov. 5 was England’s official celebration for defeating Fawkes, said Call, who has written about the nexus of Fawkes, “V for Vendetta” and modern-day protests.
Call said over the next three centuries, people in England started using Fawkes’ image in different ways. Some used Fawkes as a symbol for putting limits on state power. Others held him up as a freedom fighter.

Then came the comic book, a nihilistic story set in a futuristic England. And the movie. People began thinking of him as a libertarian or even anarchist hero.
“Gradually over the centuries, the meaning of Guy Fawkes has dramatically changed,” said Call. “The reputation of Guy Fawkes has been recuperated. Before he was originally seen as a terrorist trying to destroy England. Now he’s seen more as a freedom fighter, a fighter for individual liberty against an oppressive regime. The political meaning of that figure has transformed.”

Nearly two years after the film “V for Vendetta” was released, the hacker group Anonymous wore the Guy Fawkes masks depicted in the movie during protests against the Church of Scientology. Then came Wikileaks and the Occupy movement.
At Zuccotti Park in New York, the Guy Fawkes masks have been worn over the past month by Occupy protesters ranging from self-proclaimed anarchists to drummers to those impersonating “zombie” bankers. Few wore them Thursday afternoon because of the arrests of masked activists. But they weren’t gone – just hidden.
One was in the left hand of 32-year-old Jason J. Cross – right under a protest sign. He had 20 more stashed in his tent, to be sold at $5 apiece.
“I had 10 here yesterday, and I sold out!” he said.
Cross said he’d purchased 100 of the Chinese-made masks online.
“The origins of this mask comes from the idea of rising up against the government,” he said. “Guy Fawkes represents the fact that the people have the real power.”
A man at the Occupy London protests on a recent day said the mask has become a potent symbol.
“It’s unifying the world under one symbol,” said the 33-year-old man who asked not to be named because he claimed to be a member of a group accused of hacking into government and corporate computer systems.
“People hide behind the masks, put the masks on and their identity is hidden. Therefore they can do a lot more than they would if they didn’t have the masks,” he said, after emerging sleepy-eyed from his tent.
The London protester said his brethren are trying to counter Warner Bros.’ control of the imagery.
He claims that Anonymous UK has imported 1,000 copies from China, and the distribution goes “straight into the pockets of the Anonymous beer fund rather than the Warner Brothers. Much better.”
Hudson Williams Eynon, a protester in Seattle’s Westlake Plaza, said the mask is not the only corporate product the Occupy movement is using. Smart phones, cameras and Internet service are used to organize. It is something unavoidable, he said.
“There’s a lot of inherent ironies in protesting corporations in a corporate world,” Williams Eynon said in early October.

Except that in the movie that made wearing this mask fashionable, the wearer was a terrorist and he accomplished what Fawkes failed at. These protesters like wearing these masks for the same reason the Klu Klux Klan wears there hoods. They can stay anonymous while committing shameful deeds.

It compares Timothy McVeigh to Guy Fawkes to demogogue those who wear the mask, when McVeigh blew up a Federal Building and was more than likely an INSIDE JOB perpetrated by our own government, which would make them the real terrorists. Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Parliament, big difference from just some Federal Building. To make that comparison, you would have to have McVeigh perpetrating 9-11 with all 3 planes hitting the White House or the Capital Building.

It is certainly a tactic of communists to make things so crappy and scary that you beg a strong man to take over and make you safe. Guy Fawkes mask and “legend” was just a tool of the hero V to give people something to rally behind. It has been coopted now by anarchists. Anybody pay attention to Van Jones’ Capt America logo?

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 8:09amGuy Fawkes was the leader of the Catholic English who allegedly tried to blow up parliament in order to restore the monarchy to the Catholic Stuart family. The Catholic king Charles I had been beheaded by the Puritan army of Oliver Cromwell, a military dictator, who ruled England for twelve years. When he died the English restored the Stuart kings to their rightful place. Many historians believe that the so called gun powder plot was a set up by Cromwell in order to justify his massacre of Catholics. It is believed that Guy Fawkes was the fall guy who was set up just like many Americans are being set up by Obamas FBI with bogus accusations of treason based entirely on the word of a government spy. Ironically Guy Fawkes represented the traditional English Catholic culture and not the revolutionary Protestant culture of Cromwell and his Puritans. The Puritans came to America and were the founders of the Ivy League universities; i.e. Harvard, Yale etc. Hence the deep rooted anti Catholic and anti traditional culture of America’s educated elite. Guy Fawkes was not a revolutionary but rather a traditionalist. However the unwashed American college graduates in the OWS movement have never been taught real history only newspaper blurbs.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 10:05amJohann. Talk about rewriting history from a Catholic point of view. You conveniently leave out the role of Elizabeth I who lived at the same time as Guido Fawkes. She killed her Catholic sister and other Catholics. Without her, there would not be the USA as we know it. She became the Virgin Queen to replace Mary and ran England like a business. Our institutions and industrial contracts began with her. Our founders were of protestant decent. Had they been Catholic, we would have ended up like all Catholic countries, ignorant and poor. Our Catholic population growth is in direct proportion to our decline. Beck is a Catholic and does not understand American history because of it. Catholics were kept out of the main stream for good reason. England and Europe had trouble with Catholics since the Romans who invented it to unite their empire. It is made of Greek mythology, Paganism and a sect of Judaism. Elizabeth became the head of the Church of England and George Washington began the Episcopal church in America for the same reason, to curtail influence of a foreign powers to form their sovereign nations. In China, where I have a home, Catholics are not permitted to recognize the pope. World governments and their tools never work. Nationalism prevails. A united Europe and a united world is against human nature. Beck always brings to our attention that history repeats if we don’t learn from it. How much longer do you think Germany will support the Catholic countries of Europe?

“Elizabeth became the head of the Church of England” – yes but it was her father Henry VIII who made the break with Rome and established the Church in England.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 11:30amThese lost souls want it to be on November 5th because it is ‘Guy Fawkes Day’. Nov. 5th 1605. He was one of thirteen Catholics involved in the ‘Gunpowder Plot’ to blow up the house of Parliment, aimed to kill all of Parliment as well as King James.
Report Post »Bloody Mary, a Catholic, was burning Protestants for 5 years, 1553-1558. Elizibeth 1st got in and started and continued to burn Catholics until 1603. King James, (son of Mary, Queen of Scotts, who litterally lost her head under the order of cousin Elizabeth), came into power. James was born Catholic, but was raised Protestant. All, Protestant and Catholic alike, agreed James to be the rightful blood heir of the whole Island. His crowning created ‘Great Britain’. Catholics hoped it would stop the persecutions. He didn’t.
For nine months, Guy and 12 others, secretly placed barrels of gunpowder topped with scraps of metal in Parliment’s basement. Fawkes drew the lot to set the fuse. One of the group had a wife, who convinced her husband to warn her brother not to be there. The brother got the note to the king, the wife’s huband was tortured, and Guy Fawkes was stopped. All 13 were executed. The expression, ‘the guy’ is coming to fix this or do that, is from ‘Guy’ Fawkes.
It’s celebrated in England every Nov. 5th. Holding a dummy of Fawkes, “Penny for the guy”, kids yell to adults. At night there is a bonfire of the dummies.
Thus, the Guy Fawkes masks on some protesters. Non-violent?

What the puppets & “useful” idiots will ultimately produce is a gov response – likely in the form of simple curfews or worse (e.g. marshall law). This because they don’t know who their real oppressor is. They protest “capitalism” – which they do not understand (like the protester selling masks – did they protest him?) and which we no longer have as a result of the govt – corporate superstructure (e.g. GE). What they bring upon themselves (& the 99% they DON’T represent) is exactly what the super structure wants and is far worse than anything they can imagine in their “substance-fueled” state & anything they presently protest. Because their “god” is materialism (why else take what belongs to another in the name of “justice”) & self-gratification, they’ve become like the god they worship & their end will follow. Their chosen path to enlightenment is to embrace national socialism (whether they know it or not). & if the 99% aren’t careful we will fall in the same trap (by insisting that someone crack down hard on the anarchy – regardless of the freedoms we have to surrender to do so).
If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 2Thes 3:10

As the story suggests, it’s a silly fad based on a silly movie based on a silly graphic novel. Those who wear the masks are reinforcing their solidarity with one another, as well as making a statement to the effect that “Things cannot go on as they are!”
Guy Fawkes masks are kind of uncomfortable and awkward to do anything in except stand around having your picture taken. The tiny minority among the protesters who are inclined to break windows and set things on fire will not be wearing Guy Fawkes masks, they will be wearing gas masks or wrapping damp cloths around their faces.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 7:51amI like the masks. In an age of government video cameras on every street corner, watching our every move, the mask conceals our identities and thwarts the government’s demand to know all and see all, to be omnipotent. Omnipotent is not what our government is supposed to be, it is supposed to be small and unobtrusive. And while I am not for the OWS folks, I understand the source of their frustration (too bad they themselves don’t, or else they would merely call themselves tea partiers and come join our peaceful getherings. We could use some drummers, and a few more flutes, lol).
Notice how NYC started enforcing the “no masked protester” rule? They need their video cameras to work, and the masks prevent that. That is the one thing they will arrest you for. That, and blocking traffic. But sure, you can poop on a police car or pee in someone’s doorway, no problemo.
So, yeah, I think the next big tea party should have some guy fawlkes masks. It’s OK to borrow the good parts. Being anonymous scares the bejeebers out of the politicians. Waves of anonymous people make them cower in fear.

Actually that’s not entirely accurate. The Founders held a lot of secret meetings in the years leading up to the Revolution, hiding out in bars even (The Green Dragon comes to mind), and staying on the lowdown. And there’s nothing wrong with that, it‘s kind of silly to announce to the troops you’re plotting to overthrow “Hey, we’re not even close to being ready to take you down, but we’re planning on it! Here we are, suckers!”.
It was only when they were ready to commit the acts of the Revolution that they came out into the open. Also, recall, that the Boston Tea Party had the patriots dressed as Indians to conceal their true identity.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 7:50amThe Occupiers are many things. Mostly the result of a poor upbringing which did not teach them rules, limits, boundaries or responsibility. ( a poor upbringing both at home and in our undisciplined public school systems ) They are like the child who throws himself on the floor in the supermarket because he wants something that even he, himself, isn’t sure of. They do not have the discipline to use the tools of a free society to seek change through influence and voting. They prefer bullying, “occupying,” destroying property , shutting down businesses, and intimidating other citizens with graffiti, car-slapping, drumming and obstructing traffic. And now, folks, we will see if the mayors, the police chiefs, the governors and, indeed, our politicians have the courage to teach these little spoiled anarchists what their clueless, overly permissive, immature parents never did – how to act maturely in a civilized society.

That says more than they think. (though, they don’t do much thinking, just wanting.)
What is the point of being anonymous? To protect your identity from the consequences of your actions. This enables them to do things that they know are wrong or evil and get away with it.
Who wears masks? did abraham lincoln wear a mask? did MLK wear a mask? does the pope wear a mask? Did jesus wear a mask?

Did the kkk wear masks? Do burglars and kidnappers wear masks? You can see where I am going with this. now.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 7:49amIt’s easy to call him a Catholic jihadist, but the English crown at the time, and Parliament, were openly hostile and prosecuting Catholics, as well as destroying their churches (or defacing them to the point of uselessness). There are still signs of major destruction on some of their ancient churches in England, seen it myself. If such a thing were to occur today with Christianity as a whole, let’s say the OWS “win” and religion is outlawed, you’d see rank and file Christians doing the same thing, and frankly, rightly so.
Because OWS chose this mask, incorrectly I might add but hey they really don’t know a lot about anything, doesn’t mean that suddenly we all have to recoil at Guy Fawkes. When people in your church are being dragged out of their houses and thrown in jail, or worse, and you feel that violence is wrong and let your kids go to the torture dungeons of London, well then sir, I personally find that reprehensible.
You’re correct about Christians and peace. Thing is, not a single Christian sect around today, except perhaps the Amish, are actually pacifists. The rest of y’all cheer the bombing of whatever group you feel is a threat, consistently and without hesitation. Point the finger outward and the rest are pointing back at you I’m afraid.
But no, sir, violence is not always wrong. If I felt that way, I would not conceal carry nor would I have served in the military during the Cold War. And surely I would stand up and fight a government that would torture and murder you because you’re a Christian, even if you wouldn’t.
