DoubleTap: Smallest, lightest .45 on the market. (Photo: Heizer)
At the 2012 Shot Show, Heizer Firearms was introducing the smallest .45 caliber pistol that money can buy. It’s 5/8ths of an inch wide and weighs less than a pound.
Here a Heizer rep shows off the gun:
According to Heizer’s website, the DoubleTap is the world’s smallest and lightest .45 ACP concealed carry pistol on the market, and it has several patents pending. Two rounds can be stored in the gun’s chamber with two additional bullets in the grip. Here’s more info on the pistol from the press release:
The break-action features a patent-pending progressive barrel porting option that cuts muzzle rise and recoil. The ambidextrous thumb latch releases the action and automatically ejects the spent rounds.
Unlike any firearm, the DoubleTap features a truly revolutionary double-action trigger system that utilizes ball bearings for a smooth action and crisp trigger pull.

DoubleTap is not much wider than a smartphone. (Photo: Heizer)
DoubleTap offers more specs in the video below:
The aluminum and titanium versions start at $499 and $729 respectively. It also comes in a 9MM version.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 4:42pmThis is just a dumb gun. It has two barrels and only carries 4 rounds with a reload required after the first 2 and the reload is not a generic mag change but a specialty operation requiring hours of training and muscle memory to readily perform. This is for all the old timers who don’t want anything smaller than a .45 and don’t care about accuracy or ammunition capacity. Anyone who has ever tried to shoot a moving target in two shots with their heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, and while recovering from a state of confusion that accompanies being physically attacked at random will tell you that this gun, while better than nothing, will quickly become no more than a fist pack.

The purpose of a concealed carry gun like this one is purely self defense in very close quarters and more of a shoot and run scenario. It is not to hit a moving target, unless the perp is moving directly towards you! I guess you fail to grasp thereal concept of concealed carry and self defense scenarios.
This gun is an awesome answer to a dangerous problem.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 9:15pm@ Father of 10, Do you really think that I have no clue what I am talking about? Anyone that you point a gun at is going to move, hence, a moving target. Furthermore, once you have taken your two shots and missed because it was in the heat of the moment, you were startled, and taken off guard; you will become an easy target for the criminal that you shot at and missed or shot at and hit but only wounded. Ever seen the picture of the Marine Master Sergeant being carried out of a house carrying his Beretta after being struck with a metric crap ton of shrapnel and catching several bullets? A determined human being is one hard SOB to kill. Personally, I’d rather carry something like a diamondback, a pf-9, or another 9mm based weapon with a slim profile and enough rounds to at least get the neighborhood’s attention if nothing else.
Little note about human psychology, if you fire off a single round, or break a single pane of glass, no one will pay attention. It takes multiple instances of a strange noise to make a person question if something bad is happening. If they hear 2 loud bangs in quick succession and then nothing (which is what they would hear when your attacker stabs you in the throat) they will most likely take note and listen for more before deciding to do anything.
It appears that you are the one who has not thought these things through properly. The gun is a waste and is bettered by many guns already on the market.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 9:28pm@ Bob the moron, Well Bob; your name says it all. If you think for one second that a 7.62 X 39 cartridge is useless beyond 150 yards, then you obviously haven’t ever shot one in your life. Now, they won’t be as accurate as a good .308 hunting rifle, but they aren’t supposed to be. that said, they are good on a point target well past 150 yards and for an area target like a car or building, you can count them accurate to between 5 and 600 yards or further if you know how to take into account your bullet drop and adjust your sights accordingly. Sniper rifle it isn’t, but it is effective in the hands of a competent operator much farther than 150 yards.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:21amIt will have a two-fold purpose (I’d say “three” but its concealability is already rather obvious), a double tap under the chin of anyone who gets in that close (yes, you can say the battle is already lost if they get that close…but you’d be wrong), and a couple blasts to get their head down while you make a run for it.
There are a LOT of weapons capable of doing both, better than this…most are mouse guns…but you might consider this if the others are just to big to conceal in your work clothes.

Who would carry this as their only gun? There are much better choices. Want to carry a .45? Kahr makes a small one. You can buy a pretty small 357 Magnum that weighs not much more than that derringer. Of course, it’s going to kick like a mule, but you’ll have 5 rounds instead of two.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 3:28pmArticles like this really bring out all the John Wayne Rambo types. I love all the people talking tough with the cannons they carry and why they need it. You have obviously never been in combat or had any real training.
If you really need a full size and two magazines and all the other Rambo store crap- you’re in a fight that needs rifles and you are already outclassed. And if you are relying on pulling your gun in that kind of situation and it will impress someone into stopping, well, you’re an idiot. Or you are just using the gun as a woobie.
its perfect for a pocket pistol
its main drawback is the kick.
it will do the job its meant for- put it right up against your target and shoot.
These types of guns are gaining in popularity because they are much more concealable while the improvement of smaller rounds has increased their efficiency. That and more people are realizing the impracticality of carrying the full size cannon for SD.

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 12:17pmTruth be told, back in the 80′s we refered to this type of weapon as a punch extender. Most of the time I would envision the use of a weapon of this type the muzzle would actually be in contact with the target at the time of discharge. The target preferably would not even realize the conflict had become a gunfight until after impact. Brandishing a weapon is simply tactically stupid. If the time to employ deadly force has arrived, nothing is gained by letting the initiator know they have made a really poor choice in victims. Even if brandishing caused them to wave off and flee, you have just given them a chance to choose another target on another day.

Half the power of a handgun is the intimidation factor.
If you have a huge gun pointing at you — it makes you think twice.
If you have what looks like a cap pistol pointing at you – you think… “I can take this a-hole”

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:58pmWay overpriced. Just a fancier grade of the old derringer. Engineering, material, and overhead costs can’t cause it to cost that much.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:36pmI would file this under, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”. As a long-time proponent of
Report Post »the Second Amendment and a fan of the .45ACP, if I had to use this particular firearm, I would have already lost the encounter. Notice the porting, in such a short barrel, that will do more to reduce velocity and performwnce of the bullet itself, as this is not even a “bad breath distance” firearm, it would need to be a contact pistol to have much efficacy on the target. I will not be interested at all in this passing fad. There are far better and more reliable alternatives out there folks.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:46pmEven though you’ve never come anywhere close to being “in a pinch” firearm protection-wise doesn‘t mean you won’t be. And SOON. Just ask Glenn Beck. Hell‘s ’a comin’! And Van Jones is Comin’ with It, ya hear?! Van Jones is Comin’ With It!!!!!!

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:32pmAgreed Kaydee. I tried out a small Rugger for conceal carry. It was awful to shoot. I guess it would require more range time to get accurate.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:48pmI think we probably had the same gun – small and “cute” but hard to hold and hard to shoot – I couldn’t use it on the range for very long at all – hand fatigue from the strong trigger pull required and postion hand had to be in to hold it. Traded it for a bigger one can’t wear on my leg but does fit in my purse nicely

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 12:58pmHave you tried the Beretta RU-9? I like the way it shoots much more than the Ruger.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 2:29pmInteresting, but you can get a two shot derringer that will fire either .45LC or 410 shot shells from American Derringer Co. in Waco, TX, and I’m sure, from a few other companies.
