Herman Cain Fights Tears On Stage Discussing Cancer Diagnosis

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain got teary-eyed on stage in Iowa Saturday when asked about a great challenge he had overcome.

Seated beside some of his fellow GOP contenders for the Family Leader Thanksgiving Forum, Cain recalled the night he found out he had stage 4 colon cancer.

The Des Moines Register transcribed the exchange:

“I will never forget,” Cain began, “walking out of that surgeons office after she had just told us stage four …”

And then Cain paused. His eyes began to water.

Moderator Frank Luntz interjected: “Take your time.”

“It’s as bad as it gets,” Cain continued. “I will never forget before my wife and I were about to get in the car I said, I can do this…’

Cain paused again. The audience remained silent.

“She said, ‘We,’ ” Cain finished.

Cain’s hands covered his face. The audience erupted in applause. As Texas Gov. Rick Perry fielded the next question, Cain removed his glasses and continually cleared his eyes with a handkerchief.

It wasn’t the first time Cain has gotten emotional on the campaign trail: During a recent interview, he got choked up describing the role his wife would play at his inauguration, holding the Bible.

He also paused for a second time Saturday when talking about not spending enough time at home with his children when they were younger, calling it a “little failure in my mind” and a sacrifice he made to climb the corporate ladder.

“I always meant to be home and spend more time with them but I couldn’t because of the demands of my business life,” he said.

But Cain wasn’t the only candidate to have a raw moment at the forum: Both former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich got emotional as well, Santorum talking about his daughter born with a severe genetic disorder and Gingrich talking about a friend’s son who spent six years going through surgery to remove a series of tumors.

Santorum, whose daughter is still alive, said he did not let himself fully love her for the first few months of her life in order to steel himself for her expected death, the Register reported.

“I remember holding that finger, looking at her and realizing what I had done. I had been exactly what I had said that I’d fought against at the partial birth abortion. I had seen her as less a person,” Santorum said. “It does hurt to say that.”

For Gingrich, having watched a little boy struggle for years severe medical problems is a reminder for the year ahead, Radio Iowa reported.

“You look at that and you say to yourself, ‘All right, do I want some bureaucracy deciding that on a percentage basis this is not worth the investment?’ Gingrich said. “Or do I want a country that cares about every life of that depth? That is what next year’s all about.”

Change is inevitable. The debate isn’t about whether change is coming (or is already here, or is ever-present)… it’s whether we change for the better or for the worse. All of the candidates except romney/perry represent different types of change for the better.

Fiscal change is the most important, as every dollar that is looted makes capitalism as a whole weaker..

I thought this was a very good debate. Luntz should moderate all of them. He was fair and everyone had the chance to speak… finally. I kinda wish Bachmann hadn‘t played ’the woman‘s role’ and poured the drinks for ‘the boys’, though. I know it was an act of kindness, but I felt it made her look more like a secratary rather than a president.
I would rather my president not cry in public. I don’t like the demasulinization of men.

      @KT
Your comments seem dichotomous to me. You don’t want the woman to fill a womanly role, and you don’t want the men to seem “emasculated”. Pick a paradigm and stick with it. Either woman is different than man, and will presume a different course of action for any given scenario, or man and woman are 100% equal and should handle everything in the same manner so as not to offend anyone. God forbid. Why Michelle Bachmann is even campaigning is bizzare to me. Yes, she is a very accomplished woman who fits the conservative mold very well. Yes, I admire her. Yes, I think she could do a better job as POTUS than Bammo. She will never be elected. She has to know that. She probably won’t even win the Minnesota primary. She should forget about becoming President and get on with representing her State. For that matter, Huntsman, Paul, Perry, Cain and Santorum should get a clue as well. This is between Romney and Gingrich, and I don’t think Romney is a lock. My problem with Cain is that he has danced around the sexual harrassment charges. He has not enphatically denied them. He has “rejected” them, and said they are “false”. How about coming out and saying, “These women are lying! I deny all of these accusations! We are suing them for slander!” I like him, but I believe he is guilty to some degree. I also believe that many Republicans would vote for him for the same reason that millions voted for Samabo…they want to prove they’re not racists.

@pouncing He said very early on that the two women were lying; and he went farther and said he never did harass anyone and said that if anyone else made a claim that they were lying because there was nothing there. The last one that came out was absolutely lying in her “press conference”. A software that analyzes voice stress said she was lying – and so did everyone else who saw it. That software has a 95% accuracy rate. It said Cain was telling the truth too. Since they both said opposite things the test would have had to have failed on both in order for Cain to have been guilty. That’s a 0.25% chance. 1/4 of a percent. That, combined with bialek’s performance at the conference leaves little doubt in me that Cain was telling the truth. As for the complaints that were actually filed; the restaurant association said that one of the harshest things on the complaint was Cain saying “you’re about as tall as my wife”. There is no evidence against Cain whatsoever, there is evidence against Bialek, and you’re ready to discount him? Also, your last statement about republicans wanting to prove they’re not racist: total BS. Republicans don’t care. That‘s why it’s never the republicans who mention race. I’m tea party and you know what? My best friend is asian. I have friends whom are black, mexican, white, whatever. Racism is the dumbest concept ever. It’s just a frikin pigment in the skin. Anyone with a brain doesn’t care about skin color.

Really? Please direct me to where he used the word “lying”. I missed that one. I don’t care if your best friend is a blind Ethiopian midget-woman in a wheelchair. You still suffer from white guilt (i.e., you’ve got something to prove) if you’re willing to give Cain the benefit of the doubt in MULTIPLE accusations, and vote for him because it makes you feel good (ala Bammy). Stick a fork in Cain…he’s done. Cain himself has already played the race card. What he should have done, if he is innocent, was immediately filed a multi-million dollar slander suit against Buy-a-lick. To my knowledge he has neither done so, nor threatened to do so. He could probably get Levin to represent him pro bono.

“What he should have done, if he is innocent, was immediately filed a multi-million dollar slander suit against Buy-a-lick.”

I’m not sure he can do that now, as his running for President makes him a “public person” now. Different rules apply to public persons.

As to Michelle bringing out the drinks. I agree it doesn’t make her seem that Presidential. And there is nothing contradictory in saying bthat and decrying the emasculation of men. Political leadership is a MASCULINE job. Those women who take it on should excell at being like men in this regard. They should have more cajones than the men around them. Thatcher did.

I thought it was an excellent debate. The best of the year. Newt and Santorum rocked, and I got a clearer understanding of why I don’t like Paul. I thought he was better than many of the libertarian cranks that support him but his idea that the state should get out of the marriage business showed a historical and political cluelessness driven by ideology. I liked Bachmann but she seemed less adept at addressing various issues than Perry. Cain was the worst at being rather shallow in his reponses. I like him as a person but he makes it clearer and clearer that he doesn’t spend much time thinking about the actual mechanics of governance and policy.

@Islesfordian. Thank you for putting Porky straight – political leadership is a masculine position.
As for marriage, I don’t see any good reason for the government to involve itself with it. A state’s license is just a form of control – it will determine how you are taxed and what benefits/entitlements you receive, etc. There‘s nothing ’biblical’ about the state demanding you get its permission to consider yourself married. That should be left to you, your partner and the priest/pastor who officiates the union under the eyes of God.
Ron Paul said just that toward the end of the debate. Paul believes, as many Christians do, that government should not interfere with your oath to God. Marriage is a God-given right, and state’s have no right to prohibit that.
5 Reasons why Christians should not obtain a state marriage license

Putting me straight? I’m the guy who used the phrase “womanly role” to characterize Bachmann. I wouldn’t want a feminine POTUS anymore than I would want some hairy male nurse tending to me if I were hospitalized. My point was that you want the woman to act masculine (or at least non-feminine), but you want the men to be macho. You’re double-minded, and therefore unstable.

5 reasons why people SHOULD obtain state licenses to marry:

      1-Bigamy/polygamy.
      2-Incestuous marriages.
      3-Homosexual marriages
      4-Familial accountability.
5-State law requires marriage licenses and the Bible commands us to obey the laws.

Ron Paul is a whiney, sniveling little bee eye itch, and if he runs on a third-party ticket, he’s also a seditious traitor who will be personally responsible for four more years of Bammy. The Ron Paul supporters that I‘ve met personally aren’t that bright in the first place, and shouldn’t really be forming political opinions that could adversly affect the country as a whole. Just sayin’.

“As for marriage, I don’t see any good reason for the government to involve itself with it.”

That’s because you are thinking of marriage as a PRIVATE institution. It isn’t. It is a SOCIAL one, and the government is the representative of the society. There are three very good reasons why the state needs to be involved: wives, children and property. The weaker parties in a marriage need to be protected in case the marriage breaks up, and women give up carreer opportunities to raise children. Children do better raised in committed stable marriages and emotionally healthy children are good for society. So the state should encourage children born in marriages over children born out of wedlock.

A marriage license is just a tool for the State to control the finances of their Citizens. Marriage can always be defined by legal interpretation and lawful acceptance. How did we function without state managed marriages for more than 150 years? Our cherished Common Law (in most part, Christian principles) defined Marriage, and it was One man and One woman united for Life. Simple. It was the PROGRESSIVES that decided to create marriage licenses to further control the couple’s finances and offspring. Marriage Licenses have their history in the Progressives wanting the Law to accept biracial marriages, this then led to all marriages being licensed because they saw the effectiveness to control two free individuals united for life in one uniform State controlled process, with now the State having a say in most of the couple’s private and public decisions. Marriage Licenses were never a Conservative idea. As I said before, Marriage can always be defined by legal interpretation and lawful acceptance, as it always had been before

I am most concerned about Cain’s safety and am glad he now has secret service protection. Obama has identified himself with the Occupy movement and it is already coming back to haunt him. it Democrats that are running for reelection are trying to keep him out of their districts, one reason is that Americans are getting fed up with him and them. Cain has stood up against the Occupiers and Obama will have to defend his support. When Cain hesitates before reply to a “gottcha” interviewer, it proves to me that he is capable of deliberation before answering. That is what helped to make him so successful in the business world.

Truth, I am with you. The biggest threat we have is there are too many who do not know the Constitution. Our schools have been messed up for a long time. It takes people actually willing to stop listening to the establishment, the media, and research themselves. Instead of believing the lies, the minipulation of questions in debates and the blackout of certain candidates by the media, they should be going to the Congress website and look at the voting records of candidates that are in Congress, research the other candidates private dealings and look for how many times the candidates have changed their position on anything. If candidates change their positions, they are lyiing to you. Vote for the candidate that is a Champion of the Constitution, does everything according to the Constitution and will take his oath seriously to “Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States. What is wrong with our country is the fact that we have eroded the original intent of the Constitution and do not abide by the Rule of Law anymore.

Character does matter. To be fair to Newt – his first wife wanted the divorce but then you have to ask why she wanted one. Cain has been married to one woman for life. Marriage is not easy, but he has endured and enduring is the character trait I want in the White House!!!!!

I have given full support for Herman Cain on this board and I will continue to give that level emotionally and financially. He is a good and decent man. Many on the left ridicule him for not having all the foreign policy details at his finger tips………. neither did Ronald Reagan at this stage. I worked in the Reagan campaign and will continue honor him too. Herman, we, your friends and neighbors have a deep respect for you and believe you are the right choice.

Despite the recent polling showing Newt leading – Newt crested to early and he also will be vetted and the numbers will come back down for him. Cain will be there to pick up the votes. Many polls still show Cain leading in Iowa. There are also many undecided, I wish this debate was on TV. It was the best one so far that allowed them to speak openly about their faith and what made them into who they are today. Mitt made a mistake not going. Cain will reap the benefits in 5-6 weeks in Iowa.

I think if Herman can cram/study on some of the current events some very quickly that he can still be a very strong force. He also needs to come out with another 9-9-9 type plan for something like energy to draw the attention back to him. I fault his campaign management at this point. I think the man himself is very capable of running this Country. Foreign policy is very simple. Rebuild the military and say come with us or go it alone. Period!

I was told with stage 4, it’s a matter of getting it, beating it into remission, getting it, beating it again and again. I don’t know if his is the same or not. They said that it becomes like any other chronic disease, but it doesn’t stop the fear. I’ll have it the rest of my life. When I was stage 3 they said (of breast cancer) you’re never cured unless you die of something else. you’re always considered in remission.

Cain said something interesting on the Letterman program that is worth noting – that I wish he would have said in response to allegations at press conference. It wasn’t until Cain got into the beltway that these sexual allegations came up. Believe it or not … there are some white people who don’t like being held accountable for their job perfermance and/or told what to do … let alone by a black man or woman who happens to be the CEO. The beltway is a different breed. Cain found that out the hard way. Where are all the sexual allegations from the private sector and military sector that Cain worked in the other 39 years of his life. You mean to tell me he all of sudden became a sex manaic at the Restaurant Association? Beltway indeed! And liberal bias. Don’t fall for this crap. Cain 2010!
