(The Blaze/AP) Herman Cain became the first Republican presidential candidate to receive Secret Service protection Thursday, requesting it from the Department of Homeland Security after receiving threats.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and congressional leaders approved his protection request Thursday, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed.
There have been threats against Cain, who had been experiencing a bounce in the polls, according to an official with knowledge of the situation who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the situation. The nature of the threats was unclear.
Donovan would not say whether there had been any threats or discuss why protection was being provided.
The campaign confirmed in an email early Friday that the candidate was receiving federal protection.
“Due to the recent surge in the polls and the large crowds of enthusiastic supporters at recent campaign events, we are appreciative of the extra level of protection provided by these elite professionals,” the Cain campaign said in a statement.
While it’s unknown whether a specific incident triggered the request, police reports show that Cain’s campaign has been the target of threats on at least one occasion.
On June 1, Cain’s campaign office in Stockbridge, Ga., reported receiving a call from someone who did not identify himself but who claimed he was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. The man said that Cain, who is black, should not run for the White House.
“Tell him not to run” and “there’s no such thing as a black Republican,” the man said, according to a written statement that Cain’s administrative assistant, Lisa Reichert, gave to the police.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the police reports using Georgia’s open records law.
Local police alerted the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service to the incident.
Secret Service protection is given to each major party‘s presidential nominee but can be provided earlier if the Homeland Security Department approves a campaign’s request.
When then-Sen. Barack Obama was placed under Secret Service protection in May 2007, it was the earliest ever for a presidential candidate. One of his rivals, Hillary Rodham Clinton, already had a protective detail because she was a former first lady.
In the 2004 campaign, Democratic candidates John Kerry and John Edwards received their protection in February of that year as they competed for the party’s nomination.
Federal law allows candidates to seek protection if they meet a series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.
Napolitano consulted Thursday with a congressional advisory committee made up of the House speaker, the House and Senate majority and minority leaders and the House sergeant-at-arms, the chief law enforcement officer in the House.

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 1:52pmRaise my taxes? Dude, do you even know what you’re talking about? A lot of my family members earn very low salaries (~24k) – it would still lower their taxes. It would save my parents. My dad makes close to 100k a year and he gets taxed at around 40% – just on income. That much money may sound good – but he was unemployed for 7 months and it’s a 33% lower salary then his last job. He’s gone through bankruptcy and may lose his house. Of that 40% about 28% is federal tax, dropping that to 9 would save him. That’s all before payroll tax as well (the tax they don’t even like acknowledging exists).

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 3:57pmI have doubts that it was the Klu Klux Klan. It is probably connected to the progressives. The Klan would be more apt to go after Obama than Cain. Not that I believe or want that to be the case. It is a way of making conservatives appear as racist, and we are not. Those statements about blonde women wer made to instigate such actions in hopes that some nutcase would threaten Cain. It is possible that it has provoked the Klan to go after Cain but remember those who made the statements will stop at nothing to cause chaos and get the snowball rolling toward the “crisis” that they have created. They can’t waste such a crisis, can they? Not if they are a progressive they can’t. As we all know, we have seen it many times and will continue to witness it until they successfully take over our country.

in 2007-2008 there brief newspaper mentions that the KKK had commanded its followers they would be voting FOR democrat obama, because of his anti-Israel hatred and his choice of anti-semitic churches, and it certainly mirrored theirs, for obama is just an african mulatto out of a white democrat communist mother, a brother in arms, and the white democrats would handle him…. and obama is not a 100% American Black, a descendant of their slaves, for that is something which they would NEVER allow in the WH.

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 10:30pmHey 71Forever,
I’ll give you some reasons why I like Cain, if you’re curious. :) He’s not a politician, he says what he means, he doesn’t do the whole “blather, blather, don‘t know the topic so let me get out one of my memorized slick lines of nonsense that won’t answer your question” thing- which is one reason he really floundered on the question about Libya and has taken so much heat. He didn’t want to just blow hot air, he wanted to really remember, get his facts straight, and answer seriously- I think he was tired, though, and it hurt him. That said, Cain has had a laser light on him and the media has been just waiting for the first opportunity to pounce- so considering the vast numbers of interviews he’s been doing, he’s a good speaker.
For policy: One huge reason I support him is the 999 plan, and the fact it will lead to the Fair Tax. That is real change, which will drastically improve the economy, and fast. Also, his views are generally very conservative. The border, fixing social security by privatizing accounts, etc- he’s willing to deal with the huge economic issues facing this country.
And he has a proven ability to take failing businesses and turn them completely around….I’d love for him to do that for our miserably corrupt government!
I also think he can beat Obama, and I’d love to see them interact nationally. lol…I’m out of space, but those are a few of my reasons. :)
Also, I believe he’s innocent of the harassment alleg

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 10:40pmGot to say, I’m sick of plastic people. I like that Cain isn’t as slick as Romney. Barf!
And from what I’ve read and watched, I think I’ve made as rational a decision as I can. And I’ve decided: Cain is innocent. There as too many factors which add up to a major smear job perpetrated by someone who is afraid of Cain getting the nomination.
I’ve got to say, finding out that the Obama campaign has over 200 staffer in Chicago alone was pretty interesting. And Bialek is from there (which is the tip of the iceberg with her), as well as the head of the Illinois branch of the NRA being a friend of Axelrod….it just all stinks.
Anywho. Cain strikes me as an honorable, exceptionally smart, exceptionally hard working and successful, red blooded American man. And he feels strongly that he can help turn this country around as President. And again, he’s NOT a politician!
People are so fearful, they don’t want to lose this election, and somehow the “not a politician” thing has been turned into a negative. Are people crazy? That’s a wonderful thing! It’s a huge positive! For all the Ron Paul supporters out there, I‘ve never understood how Paul couldn’t be considered an “insider”. He’s been in the House for 30-plus years.
Cain is a leader. He’s the only person running who has had the kind of proven leadership abilities this country drastically needs- and that will resonate in the general elections! That is why Obama’s campaign is trying to derail him n

Well, yeah, that’s probably part of it. There’s obviously a very scary (but small) racist element in this country- just look at the story about the ex-skinhead who had to go into hiding and went through repeated surgeries to remove racist tattoos. That’s creepy.
I even had an acquaintance in college back in I guess 2007, who, when politics came up, she stated she was not voting for Obama. I agreed and starting commenting about how he’s a communist, etc, and she was just like..”um, no, it‘s because he’s black”. Wow. It was bizarre. Really bizarre. She was so young, she must have been raised with that racist attitude.
Made me realize everybody has preconceptions about everybody else- sometimes to an extreme which makes them racist or bigoted. I guess it’s part of life- but I think one thing that makes America somewhat unique in today’s world is that, generally, superficial differences are way down the list and work ethic, character, all the things which should really matter (as opposed to who your father was, for instance) really are the most important things to us.
Randomness. Anywho. I think Cain could make a huge and really important stab at the culture of reverse racism, government dependence, and all the rest which has been created over the last 40 years by the democrats in this country. I’d say that was lower down on my list as to why I like him, but it’s a really, really nice thought.

During the time without it, 3 presidents were assassinated and of those, at least one was a tyrrannical dictator that tore the Constitution to shreds. Also, since the secret service, there has only been one assassination, and he just so happened to be the only president who challenged the federal reserve. the only thing binding obama to the fealty of the REAL KKK is his communist anti-semitic democrat view and he is backed by the democrat unions. they would dispose of him in an instant if he threatened them.
God bless Mr Cain for Trying, but
ANYONE BUT obama 2012.

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 1:55pmReally? The KKK are dem’s? That is funny but said that you may actually think that. I am a black man and have went to their parades and listened to them speak ( i live in a rural area of MD) and i can assure ou that they dont agree with anything the Dems have to say. When has the KKK advocated for same sex marrige? Or repeal of DADT? Or Gun Control? Pro-Choice? The KKK push for most of the things the Tea PArty stand for which is why David Duke ( Former GOP Congressman of LA) supports the tea party.
Wiht no votes cast in any primary i find it odd the SS assigned protection for Cain. He is pretty well off, shoudlnt he not waste tax dollars and pay it himself? When Obama got protection he was pretty much on his way to wrapping up nomination. Cain may not even make it past Iowa. The GOP is against wasteful spending unless they get something out of it.
The KKK talk about the evel libs and thier control of the media, just like the fools on the blaze. The KKK used ot by Dems i can agree wiht that, but the southern strategy of 64 changed that one and all the Dems that were KKK swithced partys ( excpet for Byrd , but from WV who isnt in the klan?)

I save this information on my laotop just for fools like you.
Historian Eric Foner observed:
In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic party, the planter class, and all those who desired restoration of white supremacy. Its purposes were political, but political in the broadest sense, for it sought to affect power relations, both public and private, throughout Southern society. It aimed to reverse the interlocking changes sweeping over the South during Reconstruction: to destroy the Republican party’s infrastructure, undermine the Reconstruction state, reestablish control of the black labor force, and restore racial subordination in every aspect of Southern life.
To that end they worked to curb the education, economic advancement, voting rights, and right to keep and bear arms of blacks.[30] The Ku Klux Klan soon spread into nearly every southern state, launching a “reign of terror” against Republican leaders both black and white. Those political leaders assassinated during the campaign included Arkansas Congressman James M. Hinds, three members of the South Carolina legislature, and several men who served in constitutional conventions.

EXCERPTS OF HISTORIAN DAVID BARTON’S BOOK,
“SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT:
AMERICAN HISTORY IN BLACK AND WHITE”
The republican Party was started as the Anti Slave Party. The original targets of the Ku Klux Klan were Republicans, both black and white, according to a new television program and book, which describe how the Democrats started the KKK and for decades harassed the GOP with lynchings and threats. An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964. Not only did the Democrats work hand-in-glove with the Ku Klux Klan for generations, they started the KKK and endorsed its mayhem.
“Of all forms of violent intimidation, lynchings were by far the most effective,” Barton said in his book. “Republicans often led the efforts to pass federal anti-lynching laws and their platforms consistently called for a ban on lynching.

Democrats successfully blocked those bills and their platforms never did condemn lynchings.” Further, the first grand wizard of the KKK was honored at the 1868 Democratic National Convention, no Democrats voted for the 14th Amendment to grant citizenship to former slaves and, to this day, the party website ignores those decades of racism, he said. “Contributing to the evidences was the 1871 appearance before Congress of leading South Carolina Democrat E.W. Seibels who testified that ‘they [the Ku Klux Klan] belong to the reform part – [that is, to] our party, the Democratic Party,’”
Barton writes. “The Klan terrorized black Americans through murders and public floggings; relief was granted only if individuals promised not to vote for Republican tickets, and violation of this oath was punishable by death,” he said. “Since the Klan targeted Republicans in general, it did not limit its violence simply to black Republicans; white Republicans were also included.”

Barton wrote. “Three years after the Civil War, and the Democrats from the North as well as the South were still refusing to recognize any rights of citizenship for black Americans.” He also noted that South Carolina Gov. Wade Hampton at the 1868 Democratic National Convention inserted a clause in the party platform declaring the Congress’ civil rights laws were “unconstitutional, revolutionary, and void.”
It was the same convention when Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first grand wizard of the KKK, was honored for his leadership. Barton’s book notes that in 1868, Congress heard testimony from election worker Robert Flournoy, who confessed while he was canvassing the state of Mississippi in support of the 13th and 14th Amendments, he could find only one black, in a population of 444,000 in the state, who admitted being a Democrat.
Eisenhower signed the GOP’s 1960 Civil Rights Act after it survived a five-day, five-hour filibuster by 18 Senate Democrats, (including then Senator Lyndon Johnson).* And in 1964, Democrat President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act after former Klansman Robert Byrd’s 14-hour filibuster, and the votes of 22 other Senate Democrats, including Tennessee’s Al Gore Sr., failed to scuttle the plan. (Johnson only signed the bill when it was politically expedient for his presidency and the Democrats).*

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 6:41pmRational Man . . . You and Mad Dog should compare notes. The KKK is not about Democrat or Republican – just labels. It’s about liberal and conservative – world views.
Here, I’ll show you the problem with your willfully obtuse obsession with labels – only a Republican would ever consider suspending habeas corpus.
