PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It was the purse seen round the world, and now it’s for sale on eBay.
Ginger Littleton snuck up behind a man holding fellow school board members hostage at a meeting in Florida this week and used her big brown faux crocodile handbag to whack his arm.
She wasn’t able to disarm him, and he fired at other school board members before fatally shooting himself. No one else was hurt and video of the incident was broadcast worldwide.
Littleton’s mother-in-law gave her the Brahmin purse, worth about $300, because it had gotten too heavy for her to use. Bidding was up to $910 by Friday afternoon.
Proceeds will go to a charity that donates bikes and toys to needy children.
It was started by Mike Jones, the district security chief who shot and wounded the gunman.

Update:
CNN:
On Friday, Littleton said the idea of putting her faux crocodile leather purse for sale on eBay was an easy decision after she was contacted about the idea from a local TV station on Thursday. The auction was supposed to benefit Salvage Santa, a program run by Mike Jones — the security officer who, police said, shot Duke before Duke killed himself.
“The hero of the day was Mike Jones, who is our safety officer who took the shooter down,” Littleton said. “He takes old toys and bikes and fixes them up and gives them to children who need them at Christmas.”
WJHG-TV anchor Joe Moore said he came up with the idea to auction off the purse and said Littleton agreed.
“I thought, wow, what closure for everyone,” Littleton said. “This was a way to tie everything up.”
But Moore said eBay pulled the auction of the purse because legal requirements weren’t met. He said the bidding reached $1,225 at one point.
It was not immediately clear what requirements were in question, though Moore said Jones‘ solo venture might not meet eBay’s charity guidelines. A call to eBay was not immediately returned.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 7:21pmWhy would anyone want a useless object, said to be a weapon of a hero? The purse did not offer aid, although it DID aggravate the shooter. Why would anyone think a purse would save the day? She put herself and the others in more danger by swatting the man with her sad purse. I would be embarrassed.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 10:49pmEbay charity auction requirements:
You can list items for charity without eBay Giving Works if:
You’re soliciting on behalf of recognized, tax-deductible charitable organizations (for example, 501(c)(3) or equivalent status with the IRS).
You receive advance written consent from the charitable organization for the solicitation—and include the following information in your listing:
A readable photo or scanned image of the written consent. (This proof can’t be a link to a website.) The letter must be on the charity’s letterhead and signed by one of the organization’s officers
The charity’s tax-deductibility status
Your name or eBay user ID, dates of event or listings, and the donation amount (percentage of the final sale price) you’ll be donating if your item sells
I did see the original auction and a letter from the charity was not included in the listing.
Report Post »It would be simple to say boo hiss, but, in Ebay’s defense, they do need to prevent scam charity auctions.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 8:44pmI am very proud of this woman! She did what she could to try to help. The men seated behind the table had just been shot at & were probably in shock. I think I would still be under the table praying if I had just cheated death from some nut case. The shooter tried to commit suicide by cop. When that failed, he shot himself to death. There is your coward who acted stupidly.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 5:00pmIt was a very stupid move on her part ! She had to know a purse was not going to hurt or stop him and he could have just started shooting at that point ! Now don’t get me wrong here, we need folks that will stand against these idiots, but use some common sense. What we need is for everyone to have the ability and freedom to be trained to carry and use a concealed weapon ! If everyone or even a few in that room had weapons on them this nut case would never have even tried this !

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 4:39pmAs I posted before about this incident, and after watching the press conference of these people, they are arrogant, ignorant a-holes. That lady was no hero, she didn’t possess extraordinary guts, she was stupid, plain and simple.
Go watch their press conference. It is easy to see that these are your typical local school board clowns that possess less than a combined IQ of 10.
Pathetic .. and this stupid auction idea just proves it .. Pathetic

This woman did what most anyone of us would have done 30 years ago. Now we just have a bunch of ******* that call themselves men.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 2:06pmeBay is a monolithic dynasty that answers only to the CEO, John Donahoe… Donahoe took over from Meg Whitman, and many believe that his role was to turn eBay into the royalty/serf relationship between eBay and Sellers that it has become… John Donahoe is to eBay what Cass Sunstein will wind up being to the U.S. if we don’t rid ourselves of the current administration in 2012… Donahoe ruined the entrepreneurial spirit that existed on eBay for the first 6+ years… It is now tightly controlled (regulated) and joyless… No competition and no choice… Hmmmm… This sounds familiar…

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 12:44pmI find it strange and unfair that such praise is placed on the security guard as the hero in this case. The lady who risked her life for her fellow board members seems to me to have been the real hero. Next is the board member who offered his life in place of his fellow board members. After them I would give such recognition to the security guard who was armed and shielded and who waited until several potentially fatal shots had been fired by the gunman until taking him down.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 5:03amall 3 are heros. the school board member who tried to get the guy to focus on him and let the others go. the lady who hit him with her purse and the security guard who shot him. all 3 are examples of people who we should be proud of and call heros. how sad is it that this is even a debate? we call people who play sports or music or act as idols, yet we have the balls to debate people who risk their lives to defend others. where in the hell do we get off thinking we have a right to have others die for us whether is police, fireman, or soldiers? the saddest part is the nut job himself gave himself his punishment. if he had lived there would be some lib out there defending his actions and prob suing the lady or the guard.

The community taking care of those in need, not the “BIG” government…
Way to go!!! All those school officials seemed to keep cool heads during the whole ordeal. They were all surely blessed and were being watched over by a much higher and powerful authority than any government entity.

We all need to stand and fight when we can in such circumstances, granted we are not putting others in harms way. We should not let others take us hostage if we can fight! Either fight as one or fight together what ever the case may be.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 1:59pmI used to sell on eBay years ago… eBay has been ending auctions for the vaguest of reasons for as long as I can remember… They are now, and for the most part, have always been rather PC… The new guy that took over after Meg Whitman is married to a flaming Progressive… I don’t know what his political bent is, but you know if Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy… They can relist it and try and figure what caused it to be pulled… They may eventually figure out “the code”…

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 2:58pmSondergard, not down with your personal definition of the word “hero”…as if it depends on the outcome of the situation. There are heros out there everyday that do the right thing and step up at personal risk and sometimes it has immediate positive outcomes and sometimes not as immediate or at least immediately observable by the world. What iffn‘ someone like you’re doing belongs to sportfans. My grandpa said, “ when ”ifs and buts” are candy and nuts, it’s Christmas all year long”. It went down the way it did and it is what it is….save the replay video for games. She risked her life to help others, distracted him, and the end result was good for everyone except the man with the maliscious intent.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 4:55amsondergard- she is a hero, she put her life at risk to help others. so if she got shot then yes she would still be called a hero. your argument could still be used against the security gard too..what if he shot and missed the guy but hit an innocent bystandard? a hero puts them selves at risk to help others. i would hope that more people are like her. honestly you sound like one of the people who watches someone get rapped or robbed rather than help, because ‘its the polices job’ we need more people helping eachother rather than waiting for someone else to come to the rescue. and i hope if (god forbid) im ever in that situation. I show as much courage as she did
