NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Someone with a gun opened fire on a street as students were let out of school Friday afternoon, killing one parent who had tried to shield children from harm and injuring an 11-year-old girl and another parent, police and school officials said.
The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m., and police were investigating whether the shooter fired from a nearby rooftop where shell casings were discovered.
A 34-year-old woman, Zurana Horton, who had hovered over students to protect them as shots were fired, was struck in the face and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was five months pregnant, according to reports.
“Moments before, she was seen hovering over several children to protect them,” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told the New York Daily News.
A 31-year-old woman was hit in an arm and the chest and was hospitalized.
The 11-year-old girl, a sixth-grader at the Brooklyn school, injured one of her arms and had a graze wound on her cheek. None of the victims were related, police said.
The victims were on a street corner at the back of the elementary school when the gunshots rang out, Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said.
It’s unclear how many shots were fired. Seven shell casings from a 9mm semi-automatic pistol were found on the nearby rooftop. Five other shell casings were found on the sidewalk in the front of that building, police said.
Three men were seen fleeing the scene, and police were questioning at least one person. The shooter was being sought, and police offered a $12,000 reward for information in the case, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.
The school’s neighborhood, Brownsville, is located in southeastern Brooklyn and is among the most crime-plagued in the city. It’s also where tens of thousands of people, mostly black and Hispanic men, are stopped, questioned and frisked annually by police. Critics say the men are being unfairly targeted, and only about 10 percent of stops city-wide result in arrest.
Police say the tactic is a necessary crime-fighting tool that helps get illegal guns off the streets.
“Police conduct stops of individuals evincing suspicious behavior in areas where shootings occur in order to prevent, or at least lower, the frequency of tragedies like the one in Brownsville today,” Browne said.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 9:54amThis woman is a TRUE American HERO! She shielded children with her body, God will bless her many many times over for what she did, with no regard for her own life. I can’t say enough about how brave this woman was. May God bless and hold those who know this woman and her family. Her legacy will live on. I’m so sorry that she had to lose her life in order to save those children. God help those who did this awful awful thing. I hope they are caught and face the harshest penalty that can be meted out. This is what happens when guns are taken away from law abiding citizens. This woman did not have to die in order to protect her babies but the state of New York has taken away citizen protection. The police are there to INVESTIGATE and CATCH the criminals. They were NOT there to PROTECT. May the Lord bless and comfort the families and friends of those killed and hurt. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess”

I mourn for the child inside her that had its life stolen too. I hope NY has a law that acknowledges the life inside her as the human child it was.
I also pray her daughter has family to go to, and I so pray that through donations they can get this child out of this neighborhood. I could not imagine having to face the blood stains where my mother died at my school everyday.
No, moving won’t help the neighborhood, but it will help this young girl.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 12:27pm@grannyjojo:
You’ve hit on a very good point. Unfortunately people in the urban communities blame the police for crimes in their neighborhoods instead of the criminals. The woman in the video is a good example. Although she’s sincerely attempting to make her neighbors safer, she‘s been ’trained’ (brainwashed) into thinking it’s the fault of the police/city/whites/Republicans (depending on the political issue of the day for Al Shaprton, Jesse Jackson, etc.), instead of focusing on the real problems:
1) The breakdown of the family unit in these communities – too many “baby daddies” instead of husbands.
2) Not cooperating with the police to catch the criminals and get them off the street.
3) And the biggest problem? WELFARE! Their own black politicians and leaders are keeping them slaves of poverty out of their greed for money and power. They keep them supplied with iphones, flat screen tvs and cash for drugs and guns, instead of incentives and training to care for themselves. They need their vote and voice (and eventually plan on their brawn) to keep them in power. What ever happened to ‘instead of giving the hungry a fish, teach them how to fish’? If they cared about these people they’d be teaching them to fish.
The people of these poor communities need to wake up and realize that the new generation of ‘slave owners’ are the black politicians and Democratic leaders. They should be protesting at the front doors of their mansions, instead of Wall St

I do not mean to detract from your sentiments about the brave and heroic act she did, but do want to remind people that even Heroes have to accept Christ in order to have God’s blessing upon them.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 9:53amOur city just had an incident last month that happened during a vigil for a resident who died in the community. Someone spotted a guy acting suspiciously who was wearing a hoodie zipped up on a day when it was 75 degrees outside. They called the police and the police were able to locate him and following a search recovered a hand gun. That was bad enough, but the ammo they found was really scary, hollow points and a few others that are referred to as “cop killers”.
Had he started shooting in the crowd, there would have been a bunch of dead residents and probably at least one policeman.
The police can’t be everywhere all the time, but somebody in that community acted wisely. Nothing happened and no one was hurt or killed because somebody dropped a dime. Thank God!

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 10:46amThere is no such thing as “Cop Killer” bullets, it’s a term made up by the media and Hollywood to scare people who know nothing about ballistics.
Report Post »I carry Hollow Point (HP) ammunition in my CCW gun every day ( yes I have a permit ) because I want those bullets to expand and stop in the body of someone I may have to shoot. The Police carry HPs for the same reason. They don’t want a Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) bullet to over penetrate and possibly hurt an innocent bystander when it passes clean through.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 10:53am@Smith — I have to disagree with you in part, while carrying rounds with FMJ will over penetrate and endanger others and the HP’s are the best to stop the target, check into a type of rounds once known as the “Eagle Talon”, “Talon Claw” and the “Black Rhino.”
Mind you, these were the names I knew the things as when I worked with the Escambia Sheriffs dept.
They are rounds that were made to penetrate body armor and shred you to peices. The making of them is supposed to have been outlawed in the late 1990s.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 11:09amThis if it is true, bothers me. Should we call the police and report people who look “suspicious” to us? What is the definition of suspicious? Would you report someone for wearing a turban or burka in a non Muslim community? How about a scary looking man dressed like a biker with a beard? Did he have a permit?
I have carried a hand gun every day legally with a permit as a private citizen for the past four years. No one has been hurt and my wife feels safe when we are out in public. If we are in a situation where people are getting hurt badly it is within my power to stop it right there without waiting for the police to show up and draw chalk lines around the dead.
I myself carry a Taurus Judge, 45 long colt with “critical defense” rounds in it. Large, evil scary things meant to make liberals tremble with the mere mention of them. Every gun related murder is reported by the media, but where are the reports of lives saved by guns? Here are the facts from The GOA in America.
-Guns are used 2.5 million times a year.
-Firearms are used 80 more times to save lives than take them
-Citizens shoot and kill twice as many criminals than police.1,527 opposed to 606 by police last year. The error rate for civilians is 2% as opposed to 11% by the police. Civilians kill less innocents.
-States that passed concealed carry laws reduced murder by 8.5%, rape by 5% and assault by 7%.
-200,000 women each year fend off sexual abuse with a firearm.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 11:15amBlack talons and other notched hollowpoints are called cop-killers because of the expansion and fragmentation qualities of the bullet. They may have been outlawed, but a skilled gunsmith can notch and hollow his own slugs.
The Glaser Safety rounds (frangible bullet) are becoming more popular because of their effectiveness and low penetration. They have tiny buckshot in a plastic tip. And they’ll tear your target up good without penetrating something even as thin as drywall.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 11:41amHollow points are illegal in some cases in some states (NJ) and for military use but are still sold at most ammunition retailers because they are safer for by-standers than penetrating bullets, most police and CCW owners still use them.

Report Post »Black talons and other type bullets don’t penetrate body armor, but they do send fragments through the body to increase stopping power and lethality. Cops use these rounds along with the glazer safety slug and others of this sort. Fact is, a .22 can kill you just as dead. The funny thing is, HP, black talons, and the others would violate geneva conventions if used in war, but our own police can use them against us…something to think about.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 12:05pmThe first “cop killer” bullet legislation frenzy was in the early 80′s and at that time, no cop had ever been killed by one. Nevertheless, we are stuck with the term. The original bullets that were legislated were armor piercing. While I don’t know the exact composition of these, they were military rounds, having a heavy metal “penetrator” cast into the bullet itself. Like a modern armor-piercing tank killer round, the rest of the bullet would simple stop at the armor, while the hardened penetrator kept on going. Just another example of the chosen words defining the argument.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 2:01pmI‘m afraid you’re mistaken “Smith”, Black Talon used to make a Teflon coated 9mm round that would penetrate most body armor at the time (mid eighties) which were used several times in the killing of police officers. They were referred to as “cop killer” rounds. I’ve only heard of them being made in 9mm cal., but I guess some could have been made in .357 as well.

Report Post »The black talon was not Teflon coated, it was just a standard hollowpoint with a black nitride coating for looks, you can still get it today under the name Winchester Ranger and is exactly the same minus the black paint. The Black Talon could never penetrate body armor, the issues with it were the sharp edges or “Talons” would cut through the rubber gloves of EMS crews or doctors if they reached in the body cavity to grab the bullet and expose them to possible AIDS contamination.

Like you, I have a CCW. I am well aware that gun owners frequently save lives. I can’t give you any identifying details on this, but trust me, the guy was acting suspiciously. For someone in that neighborhood to call, he was drawing attention to himself. As for the type of bullets, I’m not at liberty to say, but the gun was a large caliber.
We’ve had a back and forth gang war going on for about three years now and I think we are up to four murders on it now. FINALLY the black population is getting sick of flowers, candlelight vigils and funerals. There were over 300 people at that gathering, and a lot of kids. The suspect was not local, was on parole and had no business being on the grounds of that housing project.
The important part is that he is back behind bars and from the sounds of it, he’ll be there awhile. Apparently there were other warrants out for him in other towns.
