Hero Who Saved NM Girl From Abduction Admits: I’m An Illegal…But ‘I’m Not Worried’

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The man who chased down an alleged child abductor and saved a 6-year-old girl from what could have been a horrible fate will be honored as a hero Friday. But he is also gaining a new kind of celebrity: as a poster child of sorts for immigration rights in state and national immigration debates.

(Related: Obama accused of ‘backdoor amnesty’ after changing policy on automatically deporting illegals)

Antonio Diaz Chacon, 23, is married to an American and has been in the country for four years. But Chacon says he abandoned attempts to get legal residency because the process was difficult and expensive.

Diaz Chacon revealed his immigration status to Univision this week and confirmed to The Associated Press that he is illegal, prompting chatter on the Internet and social networking sites that his case underscored immigrant rights positions in two ongoing political debates.

Some argue he is an example of the kind of immigrant the federal government will now largely leave alone. The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that deportations would focus on criminals.

“As exceptional as his story is,” said Christina Parker, a spokeswoman for Border Network for Human Rights in El Paso, “It points to the fact that most undocumented immigrants living in the United States are not criminals. He’s more than not a criminal now. He’s a hero.”

Others used it to blast New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez’s ongoing attempts to repeal a state law that allows foreign nationals, including illegal immigrants, to obtain a driver’s license. The governor has put the repeal – which was defeated in the regular session earlier this year – on the agenda for a September special session.

Diaz Chacon‘s status didn’t play a role in Albuquerque’s decision to honor his bravery. Mayor Richard Berry planned an afternoon ceremony to recognize the fact that Diaz Chacon jumped in his pickup and chased the alleged abductor until he crashed into a light pole. Diaz Chacon then rescued the girl as the driver of the disabled van ran into the desert. The suspect was arrested later by police.

In deciding to hold the ceremony, city officials said the question of Diaz Chacon’s immigration status never even came up.

“Today’s proclamation for Mr. Diaz Chacon is to celebrate the heroic actions that he demonstrated when he saved the life of a 6-year-old girl in danger,” the mayor’s spokesman, Chris Ramirez, said in a statement. “Mayor Berry is proud of Mr. Diaz Chacon’s actions and joins the community in honoring his heroism.”

The governor‘s office said it’s position was unchanged and accused immigrants rights groups of exploiting Diaz Chacon.

“The Governor believes foreign nationals here legally, whether through work permits or visas, should be able to receive driver’s licenses, but is opposed to giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants” said Martinez spokesman Scott Darnell. “The radical special interest groups shamefully exploiting this man to further their cause cannot ignore the litany of well-documented cases of this policy that put the public at risk, one of which occurred literally a few blocks away at a Denny‘s restaurant in 2009 when gang members from El Salvador who had driver’s licenses committed a murder.”

Marcela Diaz, with the Santa Fe-based Somos Un Pueblo Unido, said the larger question was the fact that Diaz Chacon could admit to being illegal in New Mexico without fear of being deported, but the same might not be the case in other states.

“The question I would ask is, `Would this have played out the same way if we were in Arizona, or Georgia or Alabama?’ ” she said.

For his part, Diaz Chacon, a father of two, isn‘t worried and said he doesn’t regret saving the girl.

“I’m not worried. Why should I?,” he said. “It’s not like I committed a murder or a felony.”

One reform we need to make is fixing the process for non-US nationals really married to US nationals to get their “green card” more readily.

I have known of others in the same situation. It’s wrong to expect the spouse to return to Mexico and wait in an unknown city for months on end. This is not to say we validate sham marriages for the sake of green cards. Just fix it for those who are married can be together.

They don’t have to return to Mexico (or other country of origin). They can file for an “adjustment of status” and stay right here.

this doesn’t sound like a sham marriage. He has two kids with his wife. If its a sham, great sham. But regardless, the question is how did he come in? Work vise, green card, or illegally. If he came in legally he should be promptly given a green card to stay with his family. But, if he snuck across and then got married for legit reasons, we need to honor the action he took, send him back, and give him the fast track to legal immigration.

Thank you Mr. Diaz- you are a hero sir. We hope you enjoyed the ceremony. If needed, I will gladly pay the money needed to have professional photographs printed, so that you can forever remember this incident…in Mexico.
If I commit even the smallest misdemeanor offence and do not face the law, a bench warrant will be issued for my arrest. If I was then the one who saved that girl, I would be recieving my thanks- in jail.

I am pretty hard on illegal aliens being sent home immediately, but this young man seems to have more of an American heart than politicians in DC. The crime here is that for him to become an American citizen was “too difficult and expensive” that he had to give up. If we enforced the laws already in place, built a fence, laid down the law to the Mexican president and gave HONEST Mexicans (or anyone else for that matter) a reasonable, thorough screening entrance (including inexpensive), America would be all the better for it.

@NOYOUCANT I agree with you there. I find it mind boggling how backward our immigration policies have become. Instead of keeping productive hard working and educated immigrants we send them packing while keeping all the blood sucking no good bum immigrants here.

I think they should call for amnesty for all illegals on a specific date, at specific locations and times. Once their all gathered up across the US use the military to detain them, and then look at a few simple things.

One: see if they have ever used welfare, free clinics, and other government aid. (Aka leached off the system)

Two: see if they’ve paid taxes or not. (Contribute back to the community)

If they have leached send them packing. If they’ve not taken a dime, and contributed back by paying taxes etc. then give them citizenship. Simply put, keep the ones that are willing to make this country a better place, and get rid of the parasites.

Another thing that bothers me is why in the heck are getting rid of the educated and keeping the uneducated. We export more college grads than any other country. They come here on student visas, become doctors, physicist, engineers, and once graduated we send them packing. Aren’t those the people we should be offering green cards to? Just mind boggling…

However, if you actually look to any other news sources beside the Blaze and Glenn Beck, you will find that more people have been deported under Obama than Bush. Uh…you‘re assumption that it’s our worldview is wrong.

I’m not at all surprised, because Bush was a Progressive. He was constantly arguing for more lenient positions on illegal aliens.

Bush’s worldview was almost perfectly aligned with most of his very outspoken critics. Every time I hear someone “blame Bush”, I chuckle at the stupid. That’s the most common case of Progressives “eating their own”.

I guess from a Progressive’s perspective, you can do that if you‘re a globalist and the other guy isn’t. That’s the biggest distinction between Bush, Romney, Perry, and those who support Obama. Obama and the Clintons are globalist Progressives – The UN should govern the world.

Bush and those like him are Nationalist Progressives – The US should govern the world.

Not much difference. They all advocate for the same kind of socialist safety nets, expanded government, fewer individual choice and freedom, etc, etc, etc.

      @Godfather.1

Apparently you don’t get your news anywhere but the Huffington post and the Washington post. His results are misleading.
The chart is misleading for at least two reasons:

      * It shows fiscal years. A U.S. government fiscal year begins on October 1 of the year before. As David Frum points out here: One-third of fiscal 2009 was presided over by the Bush administration. As the Obama administration got itself fully in charge, however, enforcement has drooped away, reports the Washington Post on March 10 of 2010. The WaPo report is here.

      * The figure for 2010 is a projection and based on the same deportations memo discussed in the WaPo article and which the Department of Homeland Security said was “inconsistent with the administration’s point of view”. The last bar of that chart is based on a projection from a memo that the DHS doesn’t support.

Why is it that, for one faction, enforcing burdensome regulations and taxes on those who (would) create jobs is never a problem, but any attempt to mitigate illegal immigration — short of essentially legalizing it — is automatically condemned as being too costly, oppressive and bigoted?

      loriann12

Maybe the 400,000 is a project, but that doesn’t negate the fact that as of June 7, 227,000 deportations have occurred. Are you suggesting that after June 7 deportations will cease? Furthermore, Obama has been focusing on deporting criminals, people who actually pose a threat.

The point is, conservatives and tea partiers continue to argue that Obama doesn’t enforce immigration laws, but that is simply not true. There may disagreements on what the exact numbers are but you can’t dispute the fact that record numbers of illegal immigrants continue to be deported under Obama.

Why is the process to become a legal immigrant so complex, take so long and cost so much? I waited 24 years for relatives to become “qualified” to come to the USA. By that time, some of their children became unqualified and the family had to separate. Does this even make sense? Why, at the last moment did all in the family have to undergo DNA testing to prove they were part of the family? We NEED REAL immigration reform in the USA. Let us get about good background checks for each immigrant. Use our CIA and other resources for something important for once. Immigrants are NOT ALL bad as proven by this article. We allow drug dealers the right to come across our borders, even Al-Qaeda can cross, but good people are denied everyday! Why is our society and the world so up-side-down? Logic and common sense should play a role in every government action.

Many immigrants have went through the naturalization process and are very proud and thankful they could come to live here permanenly. While thankful he saved a life, he is still illegal and should want to become a citizen just like his wife and children. That is if his wife is a citizen.

My guess is that he never had a passport and doesn’t want to pay the $125 for one or do the work. I assume he has a job or his wife is on welfare. The problem is, the law simply isn’t the same for everybody, nor are other laws.

He’s obviously a good kid and I would hope authorities treat this as a “don’t ask, don’t tell” situation. Go after the dirt bags.

Good for him for being a hero. Now if he’s take the proper steps to register as a citizen (as he’s married to one, it really can’t be THAT hard, right!?) then we’d be glad to have him stay.

Follow the rules. No one is saying that illegals are bad people: but they are breaking the law. As long as there are valid legal options there’s no way “it was too difficult” is an excuse.

I’m all for giving him time to make things right by his immigration status, but with his ‘I’m not worried’ attitude, I doubt he’ll even bother.

There are plenty of good people waiting in line to get here legally.

Looks like he’s a good guy & I commend him for his action but he is breaking the law by being here. I know many people are calling for changes in our immigration laws but until or if that happens he is a criminal. American citizens who break the law are punished accordingly. Yet people who are here illegally get a pass.

I guess I don’t understand. He is married to an American, unless that is a reference to a Canadian wouldn’t that give him legal residence?

If he crossed illegally, then married her it isn’t a valid marriage. He would have had to have a visa.

He may not have reached the minimum time for being married to get his green card. Or he may be referring to that process being too expensive to carry out. Either way, he is a hero for saving the little girl but he still a criminal based on state and federal immigration laws. The law is the law, immigration laws HELP to prevent unwanted criminals from entering our country, such as those pesky terrorist. By not having strong immigration policies, we welcome in everyone, good or bad, into our nation without knowing who or where they are.

I’m not bring racist in wanting stiffer immigration laws. My mothers side of the family had to fight in a war to get their legal status in America all those many years ago. They were given asylum in America for their involvement. They earned their ticket into America. Simply running across the border without getting caught is not enough to earning yourself citizenship.

If his wife is a US citizen, upon marriage, she could have filed paperwork to sponsor him for his temporary green card. Unless things have changed over the last 15 to 20 years, if they remain married for at least 5 years, then they can apply for his permanent resident alien (green) card. It is up to the alien at that point if they wish to pursue citizenship. Unfortunately, I did this for my now ex-husband when we got married. The process was anything but difficult and expensive so this guy is full of it.

There’s more to his story than just being too broke and lazy to go through the proper channels. He did a terrific thing, but he’s still breaking the law. Adios, muchacho.

The criminal was more than likely illegal which makes this Hero’s actions a wash as far as the political argument is concerned. So they are trying to make a movement based on this one persons actions. LOL.

One story of one illegal hero and the left will paint every illegal a hero. If I take that same positioning and just as stupidly say; we get one hero illegal for every one criminal illegal.

Ridiculous that they can create the argument that we should legalize all illegal aliens b/c there might be a few Hero’s among them. And people are so ignorant that many will fall for it…
