Hertz Suspends Muslim Drivers for Praying on Company Time, Teamsters Union Files SuitHertz rental car company has indefinitely suspended 34 Somali Muslim shuttle drivers at its Seattle-Tacoma International Airport location, claiming the drivers’ conducted their traditional, multiple daily prayers while on the company clock. Observant Muslims pray five times per day.

According to a report in Forbes, Hertz reasoned that the employees violated provisions of a collective bargaining agreement and a settlement with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached two years ago, requiring employees to clock-out prior to engaging in personal activities — in this case, reciting prayers.

But that didn’t stop Teamsters Local 117, which represents the workers, from filing an unfair-labor-practices suit with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging Hertz failed to give the union advance notice of the policy change.

“This is an outrageous assault on the rights of these workers and appears to be discriminatory based on their religious beliefs,” Tracey A. Thompson, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 117, said in a statement.

Forbes adds:

“Prayer is not as other people take it,” said Ileys Omar, who has been with Hertz four years and is the union’s shop steward. “It’s important for us, if you take prayer away, you’re taking a part of our lives … to be honest, we feel like we’re being punished for praying, for being Muslim.”

Omar, a 24-year-old mother of a 3-year-old and expecting a second child, said the company changed its rules suddenly. She understood that management allowed Muslims to take “mini-breaks” to pray, and didn’t have to clock out.

Meanwhile, Hertz spokesman Rich Broome stated, “The breaks were getting extended way beyond prayer time.”

“It’s important to understand that several Muslim employees who are complying were not suspended. It’s not about prayer, it’s not about religion; it’s about reasonable requirements.”

Broome claims managers spoke with the workers and posted the rule before suspensions took place. He also asserts Muslim workers who clocked-out to conduct their rituals were not suspended.

    EZ on the Freemasons thing…I’m a Christian and a freemason. I agree that we all need to educate ourselves as to what the Muslim faith is all about. None of it is any good or can coexist with a Christian nation. This might be why there is such a rush to marginalize Christians like we’ve seen so frequently in the media.       Y’all are more than free to be a mason, that is your business but since the very rules of freemasonry is contrary to the Bible means that it is impossible to be both. You are also free to say that you are christian as well as freemasons but there are a lot of gang members, criminals, entertainers (such as Madonna and others) that claim to be christian but saying it‘s so don’t make it so. Feel free to believe whatever you want though, everything will be proven one way or the other soon enough and no one will make it into heaven just because they say they are Christian (they truly have to be one), and no one will make it into heaven because of their intentions to be one or anything like that. God says that while it is good to have the right intentions to do something, WE are responsible to know what the Bible says and how it conflicts with what other organizations believe an do. If they don’t match up then no matter what is intended or wanted or desired will come to naught as to making it into heaven. Just mentioning that, I will be one of the first to defend your right to believe whatever you want to believe and whatever organizations you want to join. As long as I speak the truth about it then I am in the clear with God.

      They didn’t lay them off for praying, they laid them off for not clocking out before they pray. Muslims wanted to get paid for praying, and that’s unreasonable. You want to pray 5 times a day? Clock out, say your prayers and clock back in. I wondered about drivers and such, do they stop the bus, get down on their knees and face Mecca? That disrupts traffic, business and everything. They should take their breaks at that time, or clock off. I don’t see them letting me run an errand on company time.

      But, I’ll reply to other posts.
      I have considered becoming a Freemason, but wanted to wait until I was settled in my new home, here in Southlake.
      As a child, one of our Church elders had been a Mason, and was very high in the ranks. He resigned to accept a position of elder because of people who claimed it was demonic, etc. Of course, those same people then appointed him “elder” after he left the Masons. (If it was demonic, shouldn’t they have refused to make him an elder?)
      MANY… MANY of the most honorable, respectable people in my life have been Freemasons! I respect THEM, so my respect extends to Freemasonry. A lifelong best friend who died last year was founder of Widows’ Sons of KY. He & his brother were very active Masons, and fine upstanding, Christian men.
      No, sorry, I do NOT believe they are satanic or evil or anything else.
      I think it is a good bunch of men who do good in their communities.
      I have always believed secrecy and intrigue is what causes other to speak ill of them.

      This is America not a Nation of Islam if you don’t like this country and the companies rules who hired you and PAY YOU to “work” not pray on their time… find a Muslim based company where its agreed upon BEFORE you TAKE THE JOB … so you cant sue them later!

      More companies will NOT be hiring “you” for just this reason… even if they don’t tell you so.

      What ever the faith, I was saved from loosing my job by the grace of God. I nodded off only to open my eyes where I saw two pairs of patent leather shoes, I uttered, “amen” and jumped up from my slumber to greet the managers and went on with my job. That was God in action. There is a time and a place and Hertz got it wrong. There is only right and wrong and if Hertz would have assigned a dollar amount to the time lost and called it theft, there would be no defense. My God is with me always and I dont need to stop doing anything to talk to him.

      It looks like liar liar her pants are on fire. If it was so sudden and an unknown change then how did they have some muslims that were observing the regulations. As usual they are lying out of their teeth.       Anyway, this is a private company and they can hire and fire who they want. Every time you see cases like this and Muslims, Blacks or whomever complains and sues, companies stop hiring these people. Who wants to hire a potential lawsuit?

      All these “fair labor” laws are anything but fair. We need Government to get the heck out of all the “free market” dealings. This ain’t freedom anymore….it is strangulation of the free market.

      It‘s because they don’t just have a conversation with their heavenly father, like we do. they have to go through a ritual, which is what the Bible warned about the pharisees…..the ritual isn’t what makes praying. Praying is supposed to be the communication with God. I can send God my requests, thanks, etc at any time. But in order to hear his answer, I need to be alone and meditating on His word. Like I said in a previous post, nothing is stopping them from clocking out and praying, then clocking back in. They just don’t want to lose the money of the infidel.

But I read the article and it says those that were fired were not clocking out as required. Those that were clocking out did not get fired. End of story. I will not impede their freedom of religion but they do have to follow work place rules or face termination.

      I used to own and drive a truck over the road. In the bigger truck stops these pigs would come into the bathroom prior to their prayers to satan and wash their feet in the sinks and leave a huge mess. Never cleaning up after themselves.       Muslims have to stop all activity and face East to pray. The prayers are outloud and on a prayer rug and on their knees. Can’t drive and do that. This is why Jesus said to pray in a closet and silently because so many were making a show of their being so religious and yet not really listening to God at all just making a show.

      You should know that Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and lots of other atheists have spoken out against islam . You would know this if you listed to them instead of getting your information from those who are lying to you.

    Over there if you have a religion different from Islam you what? Live in a compound (where you’re pretty much free to do as you wish – you just don’t get to interact with the locals).

    Why don’t we reciprocate and keep all followers of mohamad in compounds where they can blow each other up as much as they want?

    They are going to lose this suit…. this wasn’t about them praying, Hertz gave them the time needed for their observances during the day. The problem was the drivers were abusing these periods where they were supposed to pray and then go back to work and weren’t clocking in/out and weren’t working basically… so the Union can sue all it wants, they are going to lose.

      If they win it will because of a liberal judge’s determination. And there are oodles of lib judges out there. If you want to live in the U.S. follow American traditions and values. Christians aren’t allowed to pray in public or school areas why should Muslims. Love America, follow the rules, or move to another Islam country.

    More lazy people trying to get out of work. There is a reason why muslim countries

      Oil, yeah, and who found that for them…???? USA “greedy” corporations that’s who..If we hadn’t explored they would still be on camels and only killing each other. We have helped everyone of our enemies grow strong and then helped them rally against us. We need to be producing our own oil, natural gas and coal so we can cut them off from us and watch them die without our “greedy” selves.
