‘He’s On Skittles’: New Police Interview Raises Questions on George Zimmerman’s Story

Ever since the Trayvon Martin case hit the national spotlight, media sources have used any and all material possible to jump to conclusions as to the guilt or innocence of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who shot the eponymous teen. At first, it was incomprehensible to anyone that Zimmerman’s guilt could be questioned – after all, Martin looked so much younger, and weighed less, and was a model student in high school, and there were tapes showing Zimmerman talking about Martin’s race. How could you possibly question such an airtight case?
Then it turned out that the photos of Martin were four years too old, that he had been taller than Zimmerman and probably more physically fit, that he’d been suspended multiple times for dodgy activities and that the tapes were doctored. The flimsiness of the evidence produced by the prosecution following Zimmerman’s arrest only heightened the problems with the case. Suddenly, Zimmerman was the victim of a race-obsessed media and should be released immediately.
Actually, not so fast. The discovery process is still going. The trial hasn’t started yet. And there is genuinely troubling evidence. For instance, as part of the discovery process, one of the Sanford Police Department’s interviews with Zimmerman – in fact, the final one it conducted – was released today, and as the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart notes, it raises a lot of questions:
George Zimmerman has said repeatedly that he was fighting for his life the night he killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old who was found with a can of iced tea and a bag of Skittles. He was punched in the nose. His head was slammed repeatedly into the sidewalk. His mouth and nose were covered by Martin. But when Zimmerman sat for his final interview with Sanford Police detectives Christopher Serino and Doris Singleton, he was confronted with a pesky perception. His injuries didn’t match the severity of the story he told.[...]
Zimmerman’s cuts and lacerations were “not really coinciding with being slammed hard into the ground,” Serino said. “Skull fractures usually happen with that. I’ve seen them all.” Later in the interview, the detective apparently showed Zimmerman a piece of paper or a photograph and noted, “Once again, these are your defensive wounds, which are essentially nonexistent. I’m looking for bruising and scrapings and I don’t see. . . . You fared pretty well, probably because you had long sleeves on. . .”[...]
“What do you think his motivation was? The kid had no violent background. No violent tendencies that we can find,” Serino said. “What made him snap? He’s not on drugs. Can you fill in that blank? . . . What do you think set him off?” Serino asked.
“I don’t know,” Zimmerman replied.[...]
Serino concludes this line of inquiry with an instantly memorable line. “I want to know, everybody wants to know, what set him off. He’s not on PCP. He’s not on anything. He’s on Skittles.”
You can listen to the interview here and decide for yourself whether this strains Zimmerman’s side of the story. From our perspective, this just shows that jumping to conclusions regarding this case is an invitation to look foolish.

I am started to lean towards Zimmerman’s innocence . Trayvon was not a little boy, the video of him in the store shows a good sized young man, that had trouble in school..what kind of trouble. he may not of been the saint his mother portrays him as. She knows the truth about her son. Zimmerman passed the lie detector so his story is true.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 10:08pmToo bad I can’t serve on the jury. I‘d shred Zimm’s story to sub-atomic pieces. This liar has done a lot of political harm to America; mostly to conservatives who bought into his lies, hook, line and sinker.
When Zimm’s first court appearance was aired, I knew right away that his story didn’t add up. I’ve been sharing my analysis and conclusions here. Tonight, I will refer you to the article posted yesterday on the Blaze, where you can see what happens to a guy whose head has been slammed against the sidewalk. And mind you, THAT guy is a lot tougher, and full force was not used against him. Plus, judging from the audio tape and Zimm’s own words, his head was slammed on the concrete repeatedly — long enough to kill him or leave him in a coma, duh.
I also want to say that early on, when you were all going Uzi because Martin had “jumped Zimm from behind,” I insisted that was not possible. Now we know straight from the horse’s mouth that Zimm had turned around and was facing Martin when he was punched. I hope decent Blazers come to their senses and stop standing up for this liar. Let his lawyers defend him if they can.

You are ridiculous. The cop was baiting George, trying to see if he would let on to some hole in his story, there is no hole in this story.
Martin – a high school football player, criminal, drug user, suspended from school, living in a broken home, parents not married to begin with, thug. Only damage is sore knuckle and a bullet hole.
George – married citizen, civic minded, spots a thug casing houses, broken nose, cuts on the back of the head, endless 911 evidence that he was the one trying to protect himself and his neighborhood.
Open and close case. Martin deserved to die. His parents are at fault, society that makes excuses for a criminal, aggressive thug is at fault, and you are at fault.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 11:38pmI’ve hit my head in the past and momentarily felt as if I were about to pass out. No cuts, bruises, scraps, or bumps the next day. I think that the cop trying to put pressure on Zimmerman from the approach of “I’m not buying your story son” is a common ploy to see if the witness changes his story. Sometimes the cop will pretend to be compassionate ad other times dispassionate and then at others antagonistic if not outright abusive. It’s all to cause emotions in the witness and put them off their game and see if the story changes. Zimmerman’s has not.
The only thing I’ve been able to fault Zimmerman for is the phone conversation with his wife where they seemed to be misrepresenting the money they had access to. While that alone disturbs the hell out of me and calls into question his honesty, his story has seemed consistent about what happened with Martin.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 12:09amYou’re the joke, INBLACK. Martin a criminal? Zimm has a criminal record too — of physical violence, coincidentally. Now what exactly does being married have to do with guilt or innocence? Stalin was married and Mother Teresa was not. And how does being suspended from school or even stealing imply you like to murder? Many people do stupid things when they are 17. Maybe YOU never got into fights. Some men have low testosterone levels even at that age, when it peaks.
Now in re the wounds: Zimm’s claim that his head was repeatedly slammed against the sidewalk does not match the level of injury he actually sustained. OTOH, a solid punch from a stronger guy who knocked him to the ground, could very well have given him a broken nose, two black eyes and the cuts to the back of his head. Furthermore, his motor and verbal functions were visibly unimpaired, which is atypical for someone whose head was allegedly pounded again and again into the concrete. Those are just some of the holes in Zimm’s story.

Obviously you are aware that a lie detector cannot “detect lies,” per se. It’s a cat and mouse game. Here’s what the Committee to Review the Scientific Evidence on the Polygraph, National Research Council states:
“In popular culture and media, the polygraph device is often represented as a magic mind-reading machine. These facts reflect the widespread mystique or belief that the polygraph test is a highly valid technique for detecting deception—despite the continuing lack of consensus in the scientific community about the validity of polygraph testing…. Polygraph testing may work, in part, because it capitalizes on the mystique that is common to lie-detection rituals in many societies.
Important threats to construct validity [accuracy] for this theory come from the fact that the physiological correlates of psychological arousal vary considerably across individuals, from the lack of scientific evidence to support the claim that deception has a consistent psychological significance for all individuals, and from the fact that psychological arousal is associated with states other than deception. (CONT.)
Report Post »kryptonite
Posted on June 28, 2012 at 9:02am@BLACK (CONT.)
An indicator that is perfectly specific to deception is one that always shows negative when deception is absent (is positive only when deception is present). It produces no false positive results. The greater the proportion of truthful examinees who appear truthful on the test, the more specific the test. Thus, a test that shows positive when a truthful examinee is highly anxious because of a fear of being falsely accused is not specific to deception because it also indicates fear.”
=> “Most of the time the person giving it can tell if you’re trying to beat it”
Most of the time? Well that’s very reassuring, especially since people are going to determine guilt or innocence based on whether the defendant passed or failed a polygraph.

Zimmerman has a criminal record? You mean the one that the judge at the hearing threw out as completely and totally irrelevant? The one that he said wasn’t representative of any violent history? The one that the prosecution pushed hard to have counted against his bail and the judge didn’t bite at all, citing that it was pretty much a joke? The one where Zimmerman was young, drunk, and got a little mouthy with an alcohol enforcement officer?

Wow, look at what you just did, RAVEN. You cut Zimm some slack for attacking a law enforcement officer — not just verbally but physically BTW — when he was young and stupid, but Martin? Sccrew him; he doesn’t get special treatment. He had no right to punch a guy who was following him late at night and probably baited him. Justice is blind, ain’t it?
You know why the charges against Zimm were dropped. His dad was a retired magistrate judge and he is a protected Dim minority. The evidence is right under your nose, but you don’t get it.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 12:13pm@weknewbetter
I did look it up. In fact, having a medical background I have first hand experience with people who are on this concoction. For starters, working backward, people on lean have very little cognitive function, and don‘t even have awareness for the most part of what’s around them. They drift off to a fantasy land of their own creation, and DO NOT act rationally. If Martin was on lean, he would not have even been aware of where he was, let alone travel to a convenience store, make a reasonable purchase, call his girlfriend and engage in a conversation on the phone, walk a clear path back toward his house, engage a person who is following him (he probably would not have even been aware he was being followed), and then engage in a confrontation where even Zimmerman stated there was a conversation prior to the fatal fight. Second, your biggest hole in your theory about lean is that the man ingredients of lean are codeine (prescription strength cough syrup or Robitussen DM), antihysthemine or dextromethorphan. The drugs are mixed in either Sprite or Mountain Dew because of the carbonation and several of the added ingredients (not found in Arizona Watermelon drink), and a candy such as Jolly Ranchers is added for sweetness. So if Trayvon was making lean, then where was the cough syrup? Codeine and antihysthemine drugs are not quickly lost in the blood stream, and would have been found in the autopsy. So try another theory that’s not so obviously racist.

What about Martin’s photo with his punk azz flipping off the camera. The kid was a punk and didn’t like someone following him so he decided to beat on Zimmerman. He found out that day he picked on the wrong person!
Also Florida Stand you ground law DOES NOT make you prove you were in fear of your life, it does not even require you to meet force with force. It SPECIFICALLY states you have a RIGHT TO PROTECT YOURSELF BY USING DEADLY FORCE when protecting yourself or OTHERS.
The burden of proof is NOT on Zimmerman to prove he was in fear of his life. The burden is on the police to prove beyond a doubt that Martin never touched Zimmerman at all. Hardly the case!

Sorry, lefties and race gaiters, you can‘t pick and choose when to let cops ’gut instinct’ be adequate reason to convict a man… In fact, cops know their gut isn’t always right, but they should be allowed to let it impact the process… Just not serve as damning evidence in the face of opposing FACTS.

Maybe he and Shellie can share a cell?

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:38pmSorry, I don‘t think the Detective’s musing in any way negates Zimmerman’s statement. I still think Z is an innocent man caught in a terrible situation.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:54pmI agree. Maybe they should ask what motives Zimmerman could possible have to kill someone and end up in the situation he is in now other than protecting his own life. He was doing a civic duty and nothing more. Trying to help his community. Gosh, I’m sick of this. It should never have gone this far except for Sharpton and JJ stirring up trouble as they always do.
Report Post »PsychGen
Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:37pm““What do you think his motivation was? The kid had no violent background. No violent tendencies that we can find,” Serino said. “What made him snap? He’s not on drugs. Can you fill in that blank? . . . What do you think set him off?” Serino asked.”
These questions would be objected to in a court room as they call for speculation on the part of the ‘witness’.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:33pmZimmerman shouldn’t have agreed to the interrogation without his attorney present who would have instructed Zimmerman not to talk to the police.I know the police say the same thing,we’re just here to help you tell your side of the story,no you’re trying to put the suspect in prison, you‘re not his friend and you’re not his mother. Some naive or uneducated kid will buy that line that you’re just trying to help and talk themselves into prison.
You find yourself being interrogated by the police, shut your mouth and let your attorney do the talking, unless of course you believe the BS that the cop is your friend and just wants to help you.
Report Post »FedUpWithLibs
Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:43pmIf you’re a gangster or thug though, like Trayvon for example, tell the cops everything. They will not hold it against you. You probably don’t even need an attorney. They might even let you go if you confess. Don’t worry about you Miranda.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:52pmNot having a lawyer present is a mistake many innocent (including poor black men) men make because they think that because they are innocent they don’t need a lawyer. Lawyers are for guilty people. Don’t talk to the cops, even if you are innocent.

I don’t remember reading anywhere that the bag of Skittles were open. I seem to remember that Trayvon went to the store to buy Skittles for younger brother or nephew.
Did anyone listen to the interview? It’s very, very strange. There’s a link in the article.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:29pmFrom the violent and disrespectful postings online, the fight club video of him fighting, his embarcing and glorification of the thug culture, his gold grill, the obscene gestures tell me that he was much more of a hood and had a completely different persona than we were led to believe and maybe even than his parents realized. It does not surprise me that Martin attacked Zimmerman first, these cops did not have all this evidence at the time.

Dude, speed balling should be done before the 9th grade, cause it’s no real big deal. Let them snort xanax off some chicks belly in the locker room, to fit in better. Sure, uh huh. Lets let them drive to, maybe let them own long guns but hold off on the hand guns until 16 or so? Wait, 16 is now the 5th grade right?
Home school and keep your kids away from the this system on display.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:09pmYet cops beat folks daily for the crime of—walking with a concealed weapon while being a concealed carry weapon permit holder. Or for driving a motorcycle with a helmet cam. Sorry, someone slamming me into the ground will be met with deadly force.
The only difference between George Zimmerman and this cop is it probably would’ve taken the cop about 18 rounds to down Trayvon.
