Last fall, 24-year-old Amanda Clayton struck it big when she won $1 million playing the Michigan lottery. That’s life-changing. And in many ways, it was: she bought a new house and car. But in at least one way, it wasn’t: hidden cameras found she’s still using food stamps to pay for her meals.
WDIV-TV got a tip from a viewer saying Detroit resident Clayton — who took a $500,000 lump sum payment — was using the taxpayers to foot her food bill. So the station followed her. Sure enough, she was. And the reporter confronted her about it.
“I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” Clayton, who gets $200 a month from the state, said when asked if she thought it was right. When asked if she thinks she has a “right” to the food stamp money, she said yes. “I mean, I kind of do.”
“I feel that it’s okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she added. “I have two houses.”

And when asked if she would keep doing it until the state cuts her off, she admitted “yeah,“ adding things are ”hard.”

And while the story and Clayton’s reaction may be mind-numbing, what she‘s doing isn’t illegal. But that could soon change in Michigan if one local politician has his way. State Rep. Dale Zorn is behind a bill to stop and prevent lottery winners from cashing in on food assistance. It would require those on the dole to be cross-checked with lottery winners.
“Public assistance should be given to those in need of public assistance, not those that have found riches,” Zorn told the station.
Clayton isn’t the first Michigan lottery winner to cheat the system. Last May, we brought you video of a $2 million winner also admitting to getting public assistance. Additionally, in August 30,000 Michigan college students were taken off of food stamps after it was found that they technically qualified for the service.
Zorn’s bill has passed the Michigan House and is now in the Senate.

How many of us are not on the government dole in one way or another? Again, it is rhetorical, you need to answer for yourself, don’t reply with indignant posts back to me…
It is hard to turn down free money. This is the main fight: Freedom or free ride. This is why this country will eventually go down the drain. Ms. Fluke, OWS, and this woman are just the big, overt signs of the underlying problem most of us have. Until the vast majority can walk away from the free ride we cannot win.

This is the truth he has no physical disability,and if you didn’t know him you would think by talking t him that he is an ok guy.I swear to you he has not worked a total fo 12 mo in his life.
He usually finds a woman with a couple kids who is drawing a check from the state,and lives with her.When he is between women he lives with his mother who also never has worked in her life.
I know this is hard to believe but he applied for disability,and so far was turned down,but he will get it with back pay.When my dad told me that my nephew had applied,he asked if I knew what disability he told them.He told themhis reason was that he had never learned to work.
My father is 86 yo,he retired from a steel mill after 33 years and that was only because they shut down.He was in the hospital for an appendectomy a few years agoand when he got out he stayed with us for a bout a month.When we refused to take any money from him he said if we didnt take it he would go home.
I retired at 62 after working as a carpenter since I was 18.People like us have just done what we thought we were expected to do and thought everything would be ok.
It took all these years for us to see what we should have known would happen to our country.

I am the man in my household but I do the cooking and shopping. What gets me is when I am in wally-world I take notice of what folks are buying. It is a game. We make good money, not rich mind you, but very comfortable even in these hard times. Yet I mostly buy Great Value brand. Some things you just have to have the name brand, but mostly I go generic. I also cook from raw ingredients and stay away from heat up dinners. While I am buying Great Value sugar, flour, dried beans, rice…I see folks with carts loaded up with name brand soda and snacks. While I am eating chicken, pork chops, turkey hot dogs…These folks are buying steaks, ground chuck, and Johnseville meats. Then we get to the register…
And 9 out of 10 times if their cart is full of name brand and lots of meat and lazy man dinners…They are paying with their food card…****** me off every time…
I eat chicken while they eat steak…On MY dime…

They get food stamps, heating assistance, reduced mortgage on a home they just bought (they filed for bankruptcy 2 or 3 years ago), free medical, free cell phones, and on and on. We figured up what he gets one day and it’s close to $40K in all the free stuff they get. He’s talking about having another child (or course he is when they’re worth that much to his income!).
Getting $40K a year of FREE stuff (well, you and I pay for it, so not so free), what incentive is there for him to go out and get a real job? Top that off with you go to the welfare (or whatever it’s called today) office and the people work there have an incentive to keep you on the welfare roles, else their jobs could end.
Until we put an end to this nonsense, it will get worse and worse. I am all for helping those in need. However, when you have a family that’s one welfare and NOT disabled, one of them at the very least can do some work for their income. There are plenty of streets and roads, flowerbeds and gardening, that could use some maintenance. Hell, the government could start some food gardens for them to work in to help feed the needy. And if they refuse to work, or are just too stupid to do such an mentally unchallenging job, then NO more welfare. I’ll bet a large majority of them would find a real job.

I can personally say that Amanda Clayton’s thinking is the majority thought of most people in Lincoln Park and the surrounding communities. I hope legislation to prevent this passes the legislature but Michigan republicans, who control both houses and the governorship, are really democrats-lite. Politicians double dipping on pensions, government workers getting more in their pensions than they earned while working, uber wealthy people using every means to pay less in taxes than blue collar workers. After buying a house, which looked very modest and an equally modest car she‘s probably thinking this money isn’t going to last forever. I don’t condone what she is doing but I do understand.

They come down here, supposedly for opportunity, then whinge about the lack of union-scale jobs and the inhumanity of having to have some history of residence before collecting unemployment or other bennies. Oh, and they drive too damned slowly. If you want to drive 25 in a 45 zone, get out of the left lane!
And I do mean ALL Michiganders….although, to be fair, Yoopers seem to be a bit more self-reliant and responsible. Sure can’t be the proximity to Minnesota and Wisconsin, though.

Granted, $500,000 isn‘t a lot of money these days and she certainly can’t retire (not that she’s working now or seems like she will anytime soon) on it, however, I bet the house and car she bought weren’t modest ones. If she made smart decisions with her money, she could make it last for quite a while and then build upon it.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 9:19amIf you’re going to be on food stamps I think it should be run like Habitat for Humanity (I realize that Habitat is a private charity which only furthers my point.) They should have to contribute in some way to the organization (state or county organization) that is footing the bill. NOTHING should come for free. There are ways even disabled persons can “give back.” There is a wonderful school I heard about on Turning Point in Las Vegas where the principal there has worked her tail off getting private donations to help the underprivledged in their community get everything from food, to haircuts, clothes, dental and even medical assistance for kids and their families in that school. The catch is though that in order to keep getting the privately funded (by donations) assistance for your family the parents have to “give back” in some way to helping in the food pantry and other services. It gives them a sense of pride back and helps them feel a little less like a charity case. Improves esteem in the kids and the families. Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas. Check it out, they are doing it right and everyone should be trying to follow their example. This is the way out of this mess and off the government teet for all of us. Wonderful example to follow. States and Feds look and learn.

Report Post »IT IS SET UP THAT WAY ON PURPOSE!, The system is designed to keep you down once you accept help in the first place. I have a friend that has MS. She is allowed to earn $14K per year. Any more and she loses all her government help including medical. Would it not make sense to allow her to earn more? If she was allowed she could be OFF the government dole only getting medical benies. But because they WANT her dependant, she has sec, 8, food stamps, the whole nine yards! She said she would need a $50K per year job with free health care just to MAINTAIN a very humble life style. She does not like it and wants off, but the game is rigged and the GOVERNMENT prevents her from bettering herself. They do this by design to keep her down and dependant. Ditto for a non-custodial parent if the child is receiving state aid. Why would there not be a clause that requires a percentage of windfall profits to go back into the system that was feeding them? Second, what changes have been made since March? 0.
FYI, last year as I was driving across the state (for work), I kept hearing on the radio an advertisement from the state of MI. If you recommended a child to the state that qualified for state insurance, you would receive $50. Where do you suppose the money comes from for the bounty and further…what comes next? I suppose if you do not put your kids on support and are happy to take care of them yourself – the state will charge you with neglect? Seems about right…then more union thug social workers can tap the taxpayers even more.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 4:01pmEveryone who takes ANY welfare or food stamps or public assistance should be required to return to the community or state a minimum of 20 hrs. per week working to repay a portion of what they get.
Could be working at community things, dog shelters, washing school buses, picking up side of roads,
helping in kitchens at shelters. There are many ways they could help and not be 100% burden on the honest working folks, plus, they might decide it isn’t worth it and go get a job.
This woman should return all the money she got plus interest & fines after winning her lottery.

Not sure how it is in Michigan, but I don’t think she would be permitted to use her “bridge card” to buy lottery tickets. Regardless, one would think that someone struggling enough to truly deserve public assistance wouldn’t have cash to waste on playing the lottery. It would take someone on minimum wage 20 years to earn what she just won AFTER taxes. She knows exactly what she’s doing continuing to use her bridge card. She’s not only unethical, she’s nauseating. I would bet her lottery winnings she voted for O’Bama (if she voted at all).

I’m in the military, and they asked if I was interested in receiving free food, but I told them, “No, my paycheck is plenty to feed my family.” Then they asked if I deployed, which I had, and they said, “Oh, well then you might qualify! Because your monthly income during those months is not taxable, your declarable income is probably low enough!” When I again said, “No” they got mad and said, “You Officers always say that! If we don’t get enough people to sign up, we lose our funding!” GOOD! I WANT YOU TO LOSE YOU FUNDING! That would mean people are taking care of themselves!

We survived with me staying home, my husband on unemployment for a year, paying our rent and utility bills plus other bills, on $12,000. We DID NOT accept food stamps or cash assistance. We did not have health insurance, even though we could have qualified for medical assistance. We even refused WIC. God really watched us over that time. We had help from NO ONE and we made it.

Just kidding. Lottery winners should have to pay back any and all monies receiving from the State they live in for any assistance received prior to winning the lottery, that would be fair.

Obviously she does not need help with buying groceries and if she feels that she does let her sell her house. I am sure there is tax payers out there that would love to be able to have help buying groceries, but most would not accept food stamps. It is called “pride”. When you are starving because you don’t have money to buy food than it is time to apply for food stamps. End of story and I hope this cheat gets caught up to.
