High School Basketball Player Body Slams Referee

Note to the high school basketball player in this video: when you are upset for getting ejected from a game, the proper way to protest is not to attack the referee who threw you out. It’s especially not advisable to body slam said ref.
Apparently, the Desoto High School basketball player referenced above does not understand any of what I just wrote. After getting tossed from a game for a minor on-court scuffle with an opposing player, he started pleading his case with the ref. When that didn’t work he got physical — real physical (fast forward to about 1:20):
SWFL Hoops, which uploaded the video to YouTube, explains what has become of the incident:
The game ended in forfeit after the player from Desoto High School in Arcadia, FL attacked the referee after being issued a technical foul and was ejected from the game. The player has been banned from all extracurricular school activites according to the coach, suspended till January 10th as of now, and a police report has been filed. However, the official involved chose not to press charges at this time.
It also issues the following advice regarding the player and the school:
Please do not let the actions of one teenager generalize the future potential actions of other individuals. This individual obviously made a bad decision. However, there has not been any other on the court incidents by other team members that we have knowledge of, and this player just transferred into the school this season. Therefore please do not unfairly associate his actions with the other players on the team. We posted the video because it is newsworthy but not with the intentions of it branding a team, coaches, school, country or area in the same light. We feel that the school, coaches, and anyone involved handled this very well, as it could have escalated even further but did not.

You should be helping this poor youngster whom I am sure is just a victim of unjust rules and regulations that keep him from expressing his inner feelings and emotions. Basketball is this child’s dream, his only chance to achieve greatness in his life, if you deprive him of his “right” to play basketball how will he ever be able to earn a living and provide for himself?

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 12:16pmBlazing.. I only mentioned that it appeared the other guy was the one who did the first foul, as I found it quite ironic. Nothing more, nothing less. And as for his response, to the other player, that was nothing out of the ordinary, in a contact sport such as basketball. His reaction to ref is of course what needs to be looked at.
I believe that you and I agree.. but that maybe I didn’t state my points very well.
Oil Robb.. I didn’t mean to sound as if I were making excuses for him.. nor did I suggest (necessarily) any jail time. There are other ways to punish those who do such things, and that is something that the courts can decide on. And yes, that would have to include civil courts. And again, I was not blaming anyone but the dude who decided to go after the ref.. I’m not at all sure where you came up with that.
Sinista.. thank you. You made my points more clear. My opinion is that some sort of community service is what would best “punish” this type of crime. But make no mistake.. it was a crime.
Report Post »Rowgue
Posted on December 15, 2010 at 1:02pmSorry that doesn’t fly. The other kid may have fouled him by bumping him as he ran down the court, but that’s something taking place within the context of normal play. Once you start pushing that becomes a non-basketball action and you are going to get a tech every time. He then pushed the other player again with as much force as he could manage after the whistle had already blown and play was clearly dead. Another technical and in basketball that’s an automatic ejection.
I’m not sure what video you were watching but nobody was slapped in the face. Did a foul occur that the other player got away with? Yes. Was it some kind of explicit violent act that justifies the reaction in any way shape or form? Not a chance.
Also basketball is NOT a contact sport. Making contact with another player is by definition a foul. Of course you have to give some leeway or you would be calling a foul every second and the game would be unplayable and unwatchable. But basketball is not a contact sport. Are there bad offiicals at every level of the game that turn it into one by allowing people to get away with fouls? Yes, but that’s not the game, that’s bad officials.
As for the people screaming he needs to be prosecuted. The victim of the assault isn’t pressing charges. You cannot prosecute an assault case without the victim pressing charges. It was a pretty weak assault anyway. He pushed him on the shoudler and then dragged him to the ground. It certainly wasn’t the “Body Slam” that the headline claims. The only reason it looked as bad as it did is because the ref didn’t try to defend himself, which is more than likely out of fear of a lawsuit.

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 2:33pmI agree that he should be prohibited from participating in all school athletic programs.
And charged with assault.
What would have happened if the referee blocked the initial shove and countered with a teeth-removing blow to the face of the young man?? We’d all be calling for criminal prosecution and banishment for the referee, now wouldn’t we!
If that were my kid, I wouldn’t allow him to play sports again, until he could demonstrate appropriate maturity of behavior. Participation in a sports program is a PRIVILEDGE, not a RIGHT.
And I’d be having him make a full and SINCERE apology to the referee, the coaches, and the athletes from both teams.
And please fellow posters, let’s practice some degree of maturity amongst ourselves.

Yes we would, because that would be an overreaction from an adult vs an overreaction by a child, the adult, being a referree afterall, is held to a higher standard.
In the NFL, players are ejected even if they come to help break it up. The same is in the NBA, they aren’t even allowed on the court to intervene, they can’t leave the bench or get a technical.
How much so should a referree be held accountable if he reacts in the way you described?
Your hypothetical scenarios don’t properly illustrate the correct course of action.
Report Post »Rowgue
Posted on December 15, 2010 at 10:31pmA sport cannot be a contact sport when contact between it‘s players is expressly prohibited by it’s rules. Contact is penalized in basketball. That’s why you get ejected when you accumulate too many fouls, and it’s why the other team gets free throws.
You should demand a refund from whatever institution you received your education from. You were clearly shortchanged if you can’t understand a concept as simple as that. But then you’re probably basing your opinion on the NBA which is not basketball. They simply choose not to follow the rules of the game in the NBA. It’s a different game in college and certainly in high school. Corruption in the pro league does not make basketball something other than what it is. It simply illustrates that they care more about making money than the integrity of the game.

I do have to agree with all of you who stated that he will fit right in the professional league. I gave up on the NBA quite a while back. Haven’t watched a game in years.

In your so-called mind, I suppose that Maine is just as violent and dangerous as Compton, CA, right?

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 5:12pmCOBRA BLUE, with all due respect, I personally haven’t attended a sports event 10 times and experienced 9 times that black players were being disorderly.
I don‘t know where you’re pulling your statistics from, but it appears to emanate from your anus.
I refuse to swallow your reality. On the contrary, I reject your reality and substitute my own, you see, reality is determined by the observer. My reality is not your reality. It’s all respective to the perspective and reality is relative to the observer.
I don‘t know what example you can provide that I’m a thug, it seems like you just have some personal issues to deal with. That’s your prerogative.
There is nothing to deny, I already anticipated that some racist clowns (such as yourself with your preconceived notions and prejudiced, fabricated statistics) were going to try to make this incident a race issue, when it is clearly not race related.
It is sad to see however, that this discussion about lack of authority, lack of discipline, and poor sportsmanship is turned into a racial issue by a group of idiots.

The definition of lawless means to not be constrained by law.
If you would apply such a weak context of this defintion to sports players, then every foul committed ought to be prosecuted by law.
As such, by your flawed logic, everytime a hockey player gets into a physical fight with another player, then they ought to be prosecuted and banned from the sport as well.
Seeing as how this is not the case, and the fighting in hockey is in fact celebrated, suffice to say your argument is a non-sequitur.
I don’t think your personal attacks on my pseudonymous screen name have any relevance whatsoever. It illustrates your lack of potent argument on the critical issue at hand.
Unless you take this incident way out of context, there is no way you can describe his actions as “hood” by any definition.

I think this entire premise you base your argument on is naive.

I don‘t know what the hell you’re talking about sir.
I never said I could predict anything of the sort you’re saying.
What I said is that I could predict that someone was going to turn this issue into a racial issue, when it clearly isn’t.
Looks like my prediction rang true.

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 10:55pmSinista Mace…let me ax you something. Do you think two hockey players who get in a fight, both agreed to fight? Do you think this ref who got body slammed by this “child” was fighting with this hoodlum? They are two different scenarios. You are a supreme moron to have made the comparison.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 10:45amTwo hockey players don’t always have to agree to fight.
Sometimes people just get sucker punched and it’s on from there.
Sometimes people just get suckerpunched and don’t get back up. **KO**
Anybody named “WHITE DEVIL” definitely doesn’t have the credibility to call me a “supreme” anything.
You probably call yourself “Supreme Wizard” when you put your white sheets on at night.
