High School Curriculum May Teach Teens How to Handle Unwanted Babies

Following two incidents in which young mothers abandoned their babies, New York State officials are considering some sure-to-be-controversial proposals. These lawmakers are looking to have high schools teach teens about the legal avenues they can take if they give birth to a child that they do not want to keep. NBC New York writes:

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, State Sen. Eric Adams and State Assemblyman Hakim Jeffries are proposing state legislation requiring the change to high school health curriculum.

The officials envision students being taught in public school about so-called “safe haven laws,” which allow a parent to leave a newborn anonymously without prosecution as long as the newborn is abandoned in a safe way.

I may get some flack, but I really think this is a good thing. Sometimes young mothers think they can do it-then reality sets in and they realize they can’t. They should know what to do if that happens, for the babie’s sake. I was adopted, taken back, then given back whe she realized love was not enough. I give thanks she had me, my life has had vaue, and I am so gratefull she in the end made the choices she made. If it stops babies being treated like trash, I’m for it.

WHAAAAT????? They should be STRESSING abstinance, not what to do with the accident. These schools have their priorities all wrong. OH YEAH, I forgot: The public schools and the communist teachers unions are forbidden to teach anything resembling Biblical morality. The communist plan to destroy America tells students: If it feels good, do it. The end justifies the means. Anyway that you can accomplish your goals is OK, even if you run over someone else along the way.

This is another clear example of the complete moral meltdown of America.

All right guys, I read your posts, I don’t agree. We need to deal with the facts here: 1. 1 in 3 women have had abortions. 2. Young girls are not aware of their options, sans the abortion or adoption options. 2. We could rely on the parents; but look how successful THAT has been so far. 4. I would put $ down on the fact that even the parents don’t know that there are safe havens for babies- or where they are.

Maybe there will be fewer abortions if these young women know that they can anonymously give the child to someone who can help the baby. Almost every week I read a story of how a newborn has been thrown in the trash, this option can help redeem the mom and save the child.

I am sure it wouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to explain the concept and the locations of drop offs (hospitals and fire departments).

30 minutes in public school time would turn out to be a 2 year plan and would teach them the proper ways to have deviant sex.
Interesting that you think that they dont know their options, they navigate the web blind folded and know how to make a baby. hmm

Man no wonder they don’t have time to teach the basics. Home school them, find people doing the same, share resources and there are plenty of older people, recently retired, with time on their hands and I bet they would be willing to assist.

Put an add in the paper and start up a co-op…

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but if we want to teach abstinence only sex-ed we will see alot more of this. Alot of you may not remember being a teenager. You cannot stop young adults from having sex, its part of growing up. It is borderline idiotic to think we can make our youth into some kind of celebate monastic order. Teach them to use protection and this wil not be a problem.

i hate to say this but in Texas that program has been around for years, maybe not taught in schools, but at the clinics, and by the state and cities, just go to any fire department, police station,or city hall, and you will see the signs, all you have to do is tell some one you are leaving the baby ,no questions,no nothing, just walk away,we have even heard of parents leaving kids as old as 13,because the parent said the kid was mean and there was a parent who left a 5 year old ,because the baby was interfering with her life style,no questions,no no nothing, just like dropping off old cloths at good well, can’t use them ,get read of them, don’t worry,it was not your fault you got pregnant at such an early age, no big deal, you go on and go back to whatever it was you were doing, and don‘t even think about the little child that will never no it’s mother or father, but go on now, o by the way,if you decide to get pregnant again, and you don’t want gods creation, then drop him or her off again, no question,no limit.

To teach them how to handle unwanted babies, all they have to do is take these high school kids to an airport, and let them watch how the parents of children who couldn’t care less of what happens to their kids, watch in utter silence as the TSA/NSA thugs man handle, grope, feel up, and abuse their (what appears like) unwanted babies. I’m sure that this would be an eye opening experience, maybe they can learn enough from watching it first hand, that they may graduate into the ranks of the TSA/NSA one day.

Totally agree with TheGoverness! If you consider yourself to be pro-life, then you acknowledge that the legal murder of these babies is a much greater atrocity. Giving young girls the information and resources to see that an infant is safely cared for, (and can go on to be adopted into a loving family), is something we should all support.

Unfortunately, parents don’t parent, they expect teachers to do the job. The school administrators tell the parents to be a best friend to the child. What hogwash! You are a parent — that means being a benevolent dictator to the young child and gradually easing off the reins as the child shows his/her growing maturity. DUH…

Of course if we wait a few years they‘ll be so confused about their gender there won’t be this problem of unwanted babies..(Sarcasm intended) On a more serious plane, It is the responsibility of the parents to teach theior kids about their choices, but that doesn’t always happen..I don’t think the public schools are the place for this to be taught, but if they still had Phys-ed they would get the basics, like we did lo those many years ago. We also had MANDATORY cooking and sewing classes. (I’m dating myself here) The main things we taught however was reading, writing, arithmatic, science, and English lit + history. We were also taught the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Gettysburg Address..Most of which are no longer taught in our schools..Now it’s Islam, Planet Green, Hate Corps, Parents are stupid, (ask Al Gore) and how to use tech to get out of learning to use their brains..

That is true, that for a baby to end up at a fire station or hospital is better than killing it. But these girls also are getting off the hook for irresponsible behavior. I don’t think that this kind of thing really the kind of thing that schools should be teaching. Thats the problem that I have with it. It would be better to teach them that there are consequences to their actions.
They actually had a daycare at my high school. I don‘t know but maybe that’s the norm now. Maybe that only encouraged kids to be irresponsible, because they could bring their kid to school and leave them in the “baby barn”. On the other hand, I wonder if it might have prevented some bad things happening to those babies, when a girl found herself in a hard situation.I don’t advocate baby barns in high school, but those are the things that I wonder about.

      (SARCASM ALERT)

Well, who doesn’t understand that a fetus (can’t call it a baby or child…) is equivalent to a pair of shoes? I have one of those drop boxes right across the street from me. I can drop off shoes or clothing very conveniently.
I think someone should provide “Fetus Drop Boxes”.
FDB Inc. is my new company idea – set them up in inner cities, generally.

There will be a sophisticated scanner to weigh the fetus, and check all vital signs. If the fetus is “viable” there will be an alert sent to the nearest hospital, police or fire station so the fetus can be “collected” ASAP.

The “Mother” or “Father” simply then swipes a credit card, welfare or bridge card.
      Here’s the brilliant part:
They will receive a CREDIT based upon the weight of the viable fetus!
      Brilliant, NO?!!?

Man, you could write a really scary piece of fiction based on this. Puppy farms, anyone…hmmm…?

I feel a little sick right now.

Correct me if I’m effing wrong, but given this and the story from california where they are teaching K-12 ‘gender-sensitivity’, is it NOT the responsibility of the PARENT to teach our children these things IF WE SO CHOOSE? How is it the responsibility of the state to teach my child about the ‘diversity’ of genders?
I have a suggestion. Allow “public’ schools teach this, but give every parent a choice. Send your child to this free, indoctrination program, where the kids are destined to fail in society, or, because you rate what property taxes ‘gives” you, you choose to send your child to a religious school or a private school. I personally am sick to death of my Country telling me this is the ONLY answer. Public school. Is is the only way to send my children, and therefore my country, to its death.

I am totally against this type of governmental interference however, as much as I’m against things like this. The absolute most important thing is that if it saves even one baby’s life it is worth it. The life of a baby is more precious than just about anything. They don’t need to start this sex ed stuff and all that but to save life then it can be tolerated. The way that I see it, what is more important? I believe that God would say that the life of a child is more important. When the government interferes in our lives we all suffer; when a family member dies, the family cries; when a baby/child dies, everyone in Heaven cries. The one thing to remember is that the liberals and the liberal government has caused this situation to even be necessary because of them taking God out of everything and to that effect, God WILL require answers from the ones responsible and while God is Perfect Love now, He will be Perfect Judgement when the time comes and these people will pay for these abominations far beyond anything that they could be able to comprehend. I pity their souls when answers are required and that will be a far worse thing than what could happen to them on this earth!

How can anyone really be against this if it helps young women safely turn over babies that they have no intention of caring for instead of leaving them in garbage cans or dumpsters or shallow graves. That innocent human being deserves a chance. If you are opposed to abortion then you must be willing to help young women do the right thing, with or without their parent’s knowledge or blessing. The reality is that there are millions of dysfunctional homes in this country where you don’t have a caring, involved mother and father sitting at the kitchen table just waiting for their children to bring their problems to them. Instead we have homes in turmoil due to (please pick one or more of the following) drug/ alcohol/ sexual/ physical abuse, ignorance/ apathy/ sloth/ etc. You do have to be concerned about the children from those homes. And the children they bear, wanted or not.

It take a village to raise a child and, so too, does it take one to give that child a fighting chance.

Eric, I’m not trying to argue here, but actually, this is not a new idea.

Before the advent of the pill and abortion, there were orphanages and convents where single mothers could take a baby. They had some kind of arrangement where there would be a small two door to a compartment in the outer wall where the parent would place the baby and then ring a bell before walking away. One of the caregivers would be on duty and open the inside door to get the baby. At that point, the child was considered adoptable.

People have taken babies and young children to hospital ERs where they have been admitted for ear aches, fevers, and whatnot. The parent leaves and then never returns, which leaves the child in legal limbo since they are unadoptable. Then they are funneled into the foster care system, where the parent can come back any old day and claim the child.

Cold as it may sound, I prefer the first option. The child is free to be placed in a home with parents who have probably waited years for a child rather than warehousing that same child in the foster system.
