High School Punishes Christmas Sweater Club for Giving Candy Canes

“Littering,“ ”creating a disturbance,“ and ”malicious wounding.” That’s what a group of light-hearted high schoolers are being charged with after they dressed up in wacky Christmas sweaters and distributed candy canes at school:
They call themselves the “Christmas Sweater Club” because they wear the craziest ones they can find. But they also sing Christmas songs at school and try their best to spread Christmas cheer.
But now all 10 of them are in trouble because of what they did at their school, Battlefield High School.
“They said we were maliciously wounding other kids. But nobody intentionally tried to do that, or did,” said Zakk Rhine, a junior at Battlefield.
The boys say they were just tossing small two-inch candy canes to fellow students as they entered school. The ones that are in plastic wrap and are so small they often break apart.
Skylar Torbett, also a junior, said administrators told him, “The candy canes could be used as weapons by sucking on them and making them have sharp points.” He said neither he nor any of their friend did that.
Next thing they knew, they were all being punished with detention and at least two hours of cleaning. Their disciplinary notices say nothing about malicious wounding, but about littering and creating a disturbance.
“It was 7 a.m. in the morning, when kids were coming to school. So I can‘t see how we’d be creating a disturbance,” said Cameron Gleason, also a junior.
The Principal Amy Etheridge-Conti says she can‘t comment on the students’ discipline, but did say there was lot more to it than handing out candy and that the discipline was warranted.
The boys admitted that their incident may have cause litter since some kids dropped their candy canes on the floor. But Cameron Gleason said he spent an hour cleaning up the dropped candy.
The boys’ parents think the school went overboard and that maybe administrators were trying to stop their boys from spreading Christmas cheer.
Mother Kathleen Flannery said a administrator called her and explained that, “not everyone wants Christmas cheer. That suicide rates are up over Christmas, and that they should keep their cheer to themselves, perhaps.”

The administration at Battlefield, is ridiculous beyond belief. They are too wound up in the smallest little issues rather than worrying about the major problems that happen everyday during the year. Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:50pm@Fed Up, Well, I don’t know what to say. I suppose I should thank you for doing me the courtesy of reposting your post for my benefit. I find it very disturbing and wonder if you actually considered the implications of your words?
Victory or Death was George Washington’s motto when he was fighting against the British government in 1776. You do remember that was the American Revolution and that George Washington and all the other Founding Fathers at the Continental Congress were acting traitorously towards their duly constituted government, don’t you. So, invoking the slogan of a mutinous officer who is commiting treason is at least seditious. I also find your rhetoric of “political death” to be very, very threatening. I do support your right to express yourself, but with ideas like you have expressed, screaming at me in all capitals, shows that you do not support my right to express myself.
As to your opinion that you get to decide who the Constitutionally guaranteed rights apply to, well, sorry, but that might call into question your love of the Constitution. After all, why do you get to decide to change over 200 years of legal interpretations? By the way, did you know that we try Somali pirates in U.S. courts? I was at a roundtable discussion lead by three American, four star Admirals and one Canadian at a conference attended by the navies of at least a dozen nations. The Admirals on the panel were all proud of that, they viewed it as proof of the greatness of the American legal system. (Crimes committed aboard American flagged ships are considered to be on American soil.) I would bet that most of these fine men were conservatives.
Please do not presume that I wish to lay down arms and reason with terrorists. My point is that if we had treated the Middle East differently, and been more sensitive in the past, we might not be in the present situation. And you can not win a war against a political/tactical weapon. Terrorism is just a weapon, it isn’t an ideology or a nation. If you persist in demonizing a huge group of people through insensitivity and oversimplification, you will only make the situation worse, not better.
I believe in the values expressed by the Constitution. I admire both Madison and Alexander Hamilton, and recognize their contributions to this nation. Running around wagging the Gadsden flag and shouting about revolution is no way to govern a country. Why does Beck so rarely speak of the men who really created the laws of this country, prefering to invoke the pre-Constitution revolutionaries to the men who actually gave us the Constitution? I am willing to live with the Constitution, as it is currently written, all 27 Amendments. I don‘t want to go back and remove some of them because they don’t agree with pop culture values. Again, you can not save the Constitution by ignoring it or gutting from it the things that you don’t like. This is 2010, not 1776. We are a sovereign nation, with a duly elected government, not some rebel provinces in a far-flung corner of the world.
Report Post »DesertRose1960
Posted on December 21, 2010 at 1:09pm@JandJohnson, Really, I‘m out of line for answering Kate’s question with facts, and I deserve to be called a vulgarity? I may only be a Liberal, but I was raised better. I answered her question with facts drawn from mulitiple articles in Wikipedia: Haymarket, Virginia; Prince William County, Virginia; and Battlefield High School. Why race? Perhaps to show you Tea people, overwhelmingly White, Protestant, and middle class, that these boys had more in common with you than was supposed by Kate’s presumption that the school had to be in California.
@Hugs, As listed above, the information can be found in Wikipedia. I am also enclosing a school profile from the district website. Battlefield High School is 58% White, non-Hispanic, a representation of the county as a whole. Not all schools in PWCS have the same demographics. Freedom High School has a large, immigrant Latino population and Potomac has a higher percentage of African-American students. My statistics were to show, again, that these students have more in common with the average Tea person than they differ. If they are White, middle class, and Christian, and probably from Conservative families, how is their punishment something to blame on Liberals and a fake “War Against Christmas”. Did it ever occur to you that they were just being brats and got busted for it?

The population density was 1,725.2 people per square mile (665.5/km²). There were 337 housing units at an average density of 661.4/sq mi (255.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.04% White, 5.35% African American, 0.80% Asian, 0.68% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.73% of the population.”
@Lonescrapper, Actually, the prisoners at Guatanamo are not POWs nor are they war criminals. They are “unlawful combatants” and are not covered by the UCMJ or the Geneva Convention. They were sent to Guantanamo because if they had been brought to the United States, they would have been covered by the Constitution, and the Bush Administration didn’t want to give them any of the affore mentioned right. Hope that clears THAT up for you, because you have way too many misconceptions to clear up in hours and hours worth of replies. But, thanks for playing just the same.
@Fed Up, I repeat, you can not govern if you are adjutating for a revolution. You are using very dangerous metaphors, even if you don’t realize it. I do not think that you would go on a killing spree. I just think, that if the Tea people get their way, and enforce policies to their liking, it will be the death of the Constitution and the two party system. Governing requires compromise, governing requires recognizing the validity of the other side. Your side isn’t currently capable of doing that, and the country will pay dearly if things keep going down this path. I value the Constitution, the tradition of the two party system and the give and take of American politics and civil discourse. Your side, if it hasn’t abandoned these principles, has twisted them into something I no longer recognize.

Hi
I am concerned, do you wear candy-cane proof vests ?
I think you should requisition them and issue them to all school safety officers.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:40pmI just started a candy-cane proof vest biz
The “gumdrop” regular version is guaranteed to stop the small 2 inch candy canes.
Comfy to wear and can be munched on in a prolonged candy cane seige.
For the larger Candy-Canes, we are coming out with a line of gingerbread ballistic inserts.
We also carry lemon drop spray, that prevents unruly students from being able to suck their candy-cane into a point.
Get them and other survival equipment here:

Is McDonalds the cause of litter when they sell you a meal through the drive through then you cast it out along the I-70 through the beautiful Rockys. No! Same here. Talk about looking hard to falsely bring some kind of charge to hang them with. Sounds very familiar…!

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:52pmIt’s time to get the progressives OUT OF OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS! It’s bordering on the extremely ridiculous in this country. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is out of control, it’s time to restore SANITY to the American public. If you don’t believe the progressives are in the public school systems, pick up a copy of the American history textbooks being used in our public schools this school year, when I did it was very different than what I read about in the late 60′s when I attended school. Most of today‘s youth are CLUELESS when it comes to the Founding Fathers and names and dates of the Revolutionary War and the early struggles this country faced in it’s first few years of independence. It’s up to all of us to make sure the next generation KNOWS THE FACTUAL HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:57pmSadly, this is probably true. I can think of 1,000 things in a high school that are more dangerous than a two inch candy cane. What about a compass that is used to draw circles? You could kill a horse with one of those things. This is nothing more than anti-Christmas PC BS.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 1:59pmYea, maybe they should ban the pencils, pens, lab scalpels, staplers, weights, baseball bats, high heal shoes, metal under wire of bras (they can scratch like something fierce!!) and iPods/ MP3 Players cause you could swing and throw them really hard! Wow really? Alright Ladies and Gents, since Kathleen Flannery was told by an administrator that her child’s actions lead to suicide, and the skol‘s website was kind enough to show the administrator’s partitioned off section of the student body to which they are responsible, you might want to ask her directly how spreading Cheer is enabling suicide.:

Report Post »When I was in high skol, our principle’s jobs seemed to consist of being paid 60 grand a year to gab all day on a walkie talkie and pick up trash. The school is not that big, why so many chiefs? Seems strange to me. Ah yes, the yearly tradition of Government waste. A waste. Just like any administrator that would go so low as to get people in trouble for saying, essentially, “Enjoy this time of year, here let me help you do that. Have this candy.”

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 2:12pmFrakking progressives. Suicide rates are higher because of lack of hope. These kids are spreading hope by letting others know they are thinking of them. When people see them punished for spreading cheer, do you not think that will get them depressed? What about the students that were trying to spread the joy?

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 5:44pmI would be pissed if someone threw a candy cane at me at 7:00 in the morning. Asking someone if they’d like a candy cane and handing it to them is one thing, using it as a projectile (regardless of the intent) is definitely not appropriate in school. I say the punishment fits the crime – clean up and two hours of detention.
School sucks, get over it. Stop trying to turn this into something bigger than it is.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 9:41pmTo PatriotDale;
The anti Chritian movement is marching forward in a politically correct world. We need to condem PC before our freedoms are taken away for ever.
I’m not arguing here, but I’d like to know where you got the idea that the sweaters and candy canes were “Christian”. Seems to me that the comment was that the kids trying to find the “wackiest” sweaters they could and the candy canes, while admittedly Christian in origin, aren’t necessarily associated with Christianity these days. Most people think of them as an addition to their hot chocolate.
Unless you know of something was said or done that directly links it to Christianity, I’d be careful of making that statement, simply because that’s what the Liberals want us to believe. Not all that long ago, a Florida elementary school reportedly banned the colors red and green, and the district had to jump through hoops to explain that it was a misunderstanding. They ended up with major fall out. So, I’m perfectly happy to let this principal step into the kimchee as deeply as she wants to. I hope the parents hire lawyers for their kids. These are students, not prisoners. They are kids, not professional business people. They have the rest of their lives to act like adults. Life is hard. I guess this principal feels that no one should spread a little cheer. Maybe she should look for a job as a prison warden instead of a position in a high school.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 1:52amThe history of the candy cane is exactly what this is about. You could not profess being a Christian in ancient times. The red is for the blood or Christ that washes us clean and makes us white as snow. So the Joke is on the school board!

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 2:37amBeing a Christian, I have no problem with incorporating a symbolism to the candy cane, but it was not originally designed that way. It’s misleading to say so.
Rumors spread so easily, especially in the age of the internet. People should check facts before continuing the spreading of false rumors.
