High School Soccer Team’s Goal-Scoring Trick Play: Dirty or Really Clever?

This could be either really dirty or really clever. After you watch it, we’ll let you weigh in.

The team in blue below is the Bryant (Arkansas) High School boys soccer team. They’re playing Conway (Arkansas) High School in white. Bryant appears to have been awarded an indirect kick, meaning it can only score a goal if more than one person touches the ball. So what’s the best way to do that? Of course it’s by distracting your opponent with a fake injury so you can slip it by the defenders to a teammate streaking in front of the net.

Here’s what I mean:

Yahoo’s high school sports blog reports that some are questioning the move, wondering if the “actors” should have been penalized (which is a legitimate punishment in soccer). But here’s what author Jonathan Wall says:

I understand the debate about the play, but we’ve been seeing misdirection and bizarre plays in high school football for years now. From trying to bring on a player at the last second to pretending to call a timeout and then throwing it down the field, plays like this are nothing new.

If anything, Bryant should be commended for using its imagination and coming up with such an ingenious play that resulted in a goal.

So, what do you think?

Nothing dirthy here. I once scored a touchdown by picking up the football and WALKING 19 yards to the end zone. Everyone just stood and looked at me, wondering what the devil I was doing.

Yeah, Truth, we did that once too. The line was blocking and loudly growling like crazy, the offensive backfield was running back and forth doing fake handoff like they were doing a reverse and the QB walked (WALKED!) 5 or so yards into the end zone. We were at an away game and all hell broke loose from the home fans on that one

I’m a big fan of John Wooden, and his view was that there was a correct and an incorrect way to play games. His method of winning was to be better at all the fundamentals than anyone else. He didn’t scout his competition: he just showed up prepared for anything.

In warfare all should be allowed, but sports are preparation for participation in this society, in which hard work confined by moral principles, done in a competitive environment, creates wealth and success for all. To my mind, this is the equivalent of the used car dealer bait and switch. Yes, you sold the car, but you damaged the spirit of trust which is necessary to be a community, and not just an agglomeration of self minded individuals.

I bet you suck at sports AND life.

A game is part of life and if you do not violate the “rules of the game” then you have done nothing wrong.

I have to agree with Barrycooper, but without the big words. The team wins for cleverness and trickery, the other team loses for failing to keep on eye on the ball and not anticipating a rogue play.
This is a lose – lose situation. Fun to watch, but I would not want my daughter to marry any of them.

Why not just do like in football every score is six points and if you score on free kicks it would count as three points. There, see just like football a real high scoring game.

    There’s no crying in soccer!

Okay, it’s a trite quip, but still.

It was an indirect kick (two or more attacking players touched it before it entered the net) and there’s nothing against the rules in two attacking players colliding with each other and falling down.

    Fair goal.

Nice trick play, but the keeper played it badly. He tried to defend from the goal line when the ball was rolled into the goal box, instead of rushing the ball. If he pressures the play, no goal.

For everybody saying this was dirty, most goals scored in soccer (as well as points in other sports) use some amount of legal trickery. It’s no worse than rushing to the line and snapping the ball while the D is changing players for 5 free yards in football or stopping to take a charge in basketball.

      @Rogue You are correct sir.

I can understand the guys up front being faked out on it. What I can’t understand is why the H the goalie would let it roll by him doing 2 MPH either way. Dude was hurt, wasn’t hurt, who cares. You have a ball roll at you that a 2nd grader could have kicked that hard, and you are making some sort of decision on whether or not to field it? He could have literally walked to that can just kicked the sh*t out of it. Good lord… Goal.

Brilliant. It distracts the players on the other team? Coach should teach them to watch the ball and not the players! Plays that come to mind. The hidden ball in the first baseman’s mitt. Bouncing the inbound ball off of opponent’s butt to self for lay up. Hidden football under jersey with fake handoff, QB runs to the end zone for score. All legal, and all brilliant, alas, they all work once!

One of the reasons for exhaustive physical conditioning during practice is to build mental discipline and remain focused on the game no matter how tired you are. Trick plays can only be pulled off if the other team is sleeping at the wheel. This was an honest play pulled off by a more disciplined team.

I beg to differ. This form of play, under the guise injury is just plain unfair and dishonest.
These methods may be considered legal in most sports, but by the same token they are unethical and beneath the spirit of competitiveness.

Trickery and deceit only sends the wrong message to our children. Hopefully, they will not attempt to use unfair play in real work life, be it legal yet unethical.

You do not tell your opponent.. .”Hey, we are going to play act a fall, and while your looking at them, I will kick the ball the other way” Get real people.
