High School Students‘ ’USA! USA!’ Victory Chant Deemed Racial Insult

In what is being described as an incident of racism, a school district in Texas has filed a complaint after some rival high school students chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!” to celebrate a basketball victory. And some of the students involved have now been punished and forced to apologize.

Student supporters at Alamo Heights High School started the celebratory chant after their team clinched a regional championship against San Antonio Edison High School on Saturday, the San Antonio News-Express reported.

Edison High School is predominantly Hispanic, and officials at the San Antonio Independent School District took the chant as a racial insult from supporters of the largely white Alamo Heights team.

According to the News-Express, the chant lasted only about five seconds before Alamo Heights head coach Andrew Brewer quickly silenced the students. Nevertheless, SAISD athletic director Gil Garza on Tuesday filed a complaint with the University Interscholastic League, which oversees extracurricular activities in Texas public schools.

“Our kids try real hard and work extra hard to get to the regional tournament, and then we have to worry about them being subjected to this kind of insensitivity,” Garza told San Antonio’s KENS-TV. “To be attacked about your ethnicity and being made to feel that you don’t belong in this country is terrible. Why can’t people just applaud our kids? It just gets old and I’m sick of it. Once again, we‘re on pins and needles wondering what’s going to happen.”

Alamo Heights Independent School District Kevin Brown apologized to SAISD officials for the incident, and said some of the students who participated in the chant were Hispanic themselves. The dozen or so students identified will apologize and are barred from attending Thursday’s state semifinal game, local NBC affiliate WOAI-TV reported.

“Obviously, we were disappointed that this happened,” Brown told KENS. “That‘s not who we are as a community and that’s not who we are as a school. It‘s not something that’s acceptable for us. Our kids are very respectable. We have to remember that they’re teenagers, and kids make mistakes.”

He continued, “We have tried to use this as a teachable moment for them. We have talked to our students. We’ve taken responsibility for it, although what happened is not representative of everybody who was there.”

According to the News-Express, Edison coach Art Vela said his players were already in the locker room when the chant erupted and that they didn’t hear it.

Nevertheless, it’s the second year in a row such an incident has occurred after the tournament. Last year, students at a different high school chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!“ and ”Arizona! Arizona!” after they beat another school. The “Arizona!” chant was in reference to the state’s illegal immigration bill.

“Our kids deserve better than hearing what they did after the game from those Alamo Heights students, even if it was just for a few seconds,” Garza said. “Once it’s out, it’s out.”

Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo — a nationally syndicated radio host based in San Antonio and frequent fill-in for Glenn Beck — on Wednesday blasted the local media coverage of the controversy, saying reporters demonized the “U-S-A!” chant, rather than presenting the story as students misusing it as a taunt. Isn‘t Obama’s America wonderful? Divide, divide, divide.

Maybe Mr. Garza can tell us how many kids on his team are actually in the country legally. “Once again”, Mr. Garza, the citizens of the USA are on “pins and needles” wondering how our country is going to survive the plentiful “entitled” ILLEGALS on the USA’s dole.

O K, enough is enough. This is indoctrination gone nuts. When they tell American Citizens — who just happen to be students — they can’t be proud of their heritage while they let students in California take down the American flag and replace it with the Mexican flag, it’s time to raise hell in the streets. The parents and Citizens of Alamo Heights BETTER march in the streets carrying American flags, and call for the ouster of the entire school board.

If they don’t, expect the same thing at the next olympics.

Let’s not get “stuck on stupid”. The students did mean this to be racial and it only painted them to be a bunch of ignorant hicks as every student in BOTH teams was American. These students were a bunch of idiots. No, there is nothing wrong with the USA chant. But it didn’t belong there. How would it have sounded for the crowd to chant USA, USA after the Giants beat the Patriots in the Superbowl? Pretty imbecilic. Well, that’s how these students sounded.

Both were high schools in the U.S. If the team felt the need to chant USA instead of their school name it seems safe to assume this was racially motivated. These students were trying to alienate the other team as not “real Americans” because they are Hispanic. I suppose you also would support a team that chanted “white, white’ after beating a predominately black team.

I believe that if these students are to be punished then those Mexican students who marched and chanted with Mexican flags should be punished as well. That is what is happening to America. When you do not assimilate then segregation results and you run around trying to make accommodations for all different groups and there is unequal and prejudice “justice” and application of the rules. In our PC climate the minority rules the roost and the majority is silenced and intimidated. We have schools teaching anti-American/pro-Mexican rewritten history, we have illegals getting federal money, we have politicians that knowingly ignore the laws currently on the books and this is all breeding a current of resentment and prejudice against these people unfortunately. Our politicians are not just ruining this country politically but they are changing who we are as a whole because of their corrupt self-serving agendas and idiocy……Man I hate most all politicians….

@ ROBMAC……….I agree. If you read my post before my response to you, you would see why it is occurring though. The inability to understand that the problem is not overt racism is missed on many in the media and unfortunately those who speak against it. You know as well as I that most of those kids would not have any overt prejudice or racist feelings toward Hispanics except that our current government policies towards those who are here illegally and their inaction against illegals that are committing egregious crimes against US citizens. These kids as with many are fed up with feeling like they are being overrun and paying for those who are here ILLEGALLY. It is the lefts policies that are breeding the divisions all the while they sit back and yell RACISM, HATERS. You have to see the greater picture otherwise you will fall right into the trap that they have set. Were these chants aimed at Hispanics, no doubt, was it because these kids are haters without provocation? We both know why and if you did live on the border you would have a better understanding of the resentment that exists among many citizens. You are calling out a symptom and ignoring the disease. Deal with the disease and the symptoms will soon disappear……

But I did not want to make the mistake of ignoring the feelings of those other KIDS if they truly are Americans. Kids will always rub noses of other kids in a loss when it comes to sports. The problem is that some Hispanics have been in this country longer than it has been the USA. Lots of bigots do not know that. They think everyone that is Hispanic crossed the Rio Grande yesterday. So, a group of Caucasian Americans are trying to diminish fellow Hispanic Americans by insinuating that they are Mexicans. It isn’t that complicated. In that crowd were some patriots chanting USA and in that crowd were some bigots trying to diminish Americans of a different ethnicity. Which are you? Was this misplaced and ill advised no doubt but the problem are not “bigot kids” the problem are the divisive “progressive” policies of the fed. Ask yourself, are we more unified with a liberal in office or more divide across all lines. Rich/poor, black/white, white/Hispanic, left/right, male/female, young/old. After teaching on the border for seven years, unfortunately, most of the students I taught, 100% Mexican didn’t seem to have much use for America. I not saying all but a great many of the kids in my classes stated that they hated the USA and would not fight for it; however, they loved to brag about Mexico, I’m sorry, Crapco. One of the most dangerous countries in the world. I would say at least 25% of those students I taught were here illegally and they were some real turds. They come over here, get themselves a mailbox and get food stamps, free medical, free education, free breakfast, free lunch, free computers, and it goes on and on. I saw it first hand. I would walk into the grocery store, women with their five children would pull out their Lone Star Card. She couldn’t speak a lick on English, but man, could they ever use that Lone Star Card. They keep getting things given to them and give nothing back except being some of the biggest turds I have ever taught. Most of them are probably here illegally anyway and living off the taxpayers dollars. What a shame for the coach of that patriotic team to apologize and tell the team to stop saying USA!!!!!! What is the great young nation of the United States of America coming to when outsiders tell us to take down our flags and to not the Pledge of Allegiance and to stop bragging about our great Judeo-Christian nation that so many brave warriors have shed their blood to defend.

I really do wish everyone would take a big deep breath and relax. We are getting on each other and arguing if it was or wasn’t appropriate. This my fellow Americans misses the point and frankly is a diversion. No one is asking the reason why these kids felt the need to chant this at a high school game where everyone was American. Is nit not because the America we all grew up with is being threatened with extinction? Rather than integration we are being forced with toleration. Tolerate the illegal who hates our country but loves the free stuff. Tolerate the Muslim who may hate our way of life but enjoys the freedoms we hold dear and that protects them. The issue is that this wouldn‘t be a topic of discussion in the freakin’ federal government did what they are supposed to do and protected our borders and provided a safe and legal way for people to immigrate to this country. It is the leftist progressive policies that are tearing this country apart and pitting one group against another. It’s what they thrive on and how they maintain power. Make everyone a victim that only a powerful central government can protect or provide for. That is the real story behind the story, instead we spend time defending or criticizing a bunch of teenagers that don’t know much about much. Are youth are simply a product of our society. When we encourage segregation through “cultural sensitivity” bull-crap then we get segregated kids.

Such anger Darla. Unable to even realize what happened there. Students used our USA pride chant as a weapon against students that don’t look like them on the outside. I, however, don’t think that the students should be punished. The more you bury the hate that is inside of folks, the more it grows. I’d rather know who thinks what and not be lulled into a sense that all is well. This is a result of years of progressive thought. You make excuses over and over for one group (illegal aliens) and expect that the oppressed groups (non-illegals) never voice their outrage at the abuses. All people of all colors look the same inside . Please realize also that some of those brown students might be here legally and are proud Americans. Some of their dads might be in the military. Remember what you were told … not to judge a book by its cover. Chanting USA when you defeat another American team that looks different than you do is not patriotic, but you think it is Darla. May God Bless the USA… we need it.

      cesium, your answer is simple,

I live near the border and many (not all, but many) of the mexican immigrants are not here to assimilate into our society. A very large number of illegal mexican immigrants feel that CA, AZ, NM, and TX rightfully belong to mexico and they are here as occupiers.

They want to fly foreign flags, speak foreign languages, and celebrate foreign holidays but then feign indignation when someone treats them like a foreigner.

If they want to maintain their allegiance to mexico, that’s fine. But you can’t expect the rest of us not to notice.

“Once again, we‘re on pins and needles wondering what’s going to happen.”

Well, then, let me set your mind at ease so you won’t be on pins and needles wondering.

This nation is headed toward civil war for many reasons, one of the main ones being that multicultural nations always fail, with most of them erupting into armed conflicts.

Why would this one be any different, considering that every tribe here is trying to dominate the white power structure and take over?

I hope that helps. Here’s three other reasons…out of many.

“We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population… I love it. They are ******** in their pants with fear. I love it.”, “We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him.”– Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas. (Still employed there.)

“California is going to be a Hispanic state, and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave. They should go back to Europe.” — Mario Obledo, co-founder and President of MALDEF

“Republica del Norte,” the Republic of the North, which would include the present U.S. states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, plus southern Colorado, along with several current Mexican states, is “an inevitability.“ The new ”Hispanic homeland“ should be brought into being ”by any means necessary.” — Charles Truxillo, professor, University of New Mexi

      @ RabidPatriot

{Quote} So, a group of Caucasian Americans are trying to diminish fellow Hispanic Americans by insinuating that they are Mexicans.

I agree everything you stated save for this one part. It isn’t that the Caucasians thought were insinuating they were Mexican. It is they were insinuating the Hispanics as being non-American. IE they were judging legal status simply based on color of skin. However, seeing as this was Texas, most likely most Hispanic students are of Mexican descent. So, you may still be correct.

My big problem with the behavior displayed is that this gives the progressive more power with their attacks regarding profiling as a means of racism with verifying legal status. We wouldn’t want police targeting white citizens that live in the rural areas as militants and threats to the nation. So, why would we say it is acceptable to target any other race. Stick to the facts. If a person doesn’t speak clear English, has no license, has no registration for their vehicle, has no insurance… It is not racist to ask for a Visa or Green Card. It is reasonable doubt.

Situations like this just help muddy the waters.

Yo make excellent points Except for: “These kids as with many are fed up with feeling like they are being overrun and paying for those who are here ILLEGALLY.”

However, a few things to consider:
      1) Are these kids paying for anything of the Hispanic? As far as I knew, kids do not pay taxes. Even if they have a part time job, they are credited back most of their taxes due to their age.
      2) At what age do teens understand political policy. They may think they know, but as all of us would admit, we know more now that we are older than when we were kids. This is in tandem with the quote: “Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains.” — Winston Churchill

Most teens and college students are extremely liberal. Very rarely is it that they are conservative (though it happens). Either all these kids are sharing a prejudice from their parents, or have a common insensitivity to others around them. You may call this wuss-ification of America, but what is it was a group of white kids being berated by a group of blacks? Like:
      http://www.theblaze.com/stories/report-black-mobs-attack-white-patrons-outside-wis-state-fair/

The only difference is violence, but the motivation was similar in association that race was indeed the motivation.

Sorry you not yo in previous post….

However, these kids are too immature to understand the impact they are having on others. Much like most American do not understand the impact they have on their neighbors by expecting food stamps, unemployment, welfare (EITC), healthcare, social security, etc. We are an extremely self centered nation. I am all for U-S-A! chants, but in the appropriate context (Olympics, World Championships versus other countries, success by the military, etc). A High School victory versus another American High School is not one of these areas. It should be assumed that the kids are American (though some if not many are not). Otherwise, are we to presume guilt first in the court of law in America? We must stand for the principles which define us and represent these in our actions – despite what our prejudices hold.

Note i am not discrediting that what you say is partly true. I just refuse to accept that all cases of this behavior follow one set of guidelines. Like the choices, motivations are always a case by case basis that is only able to be judge by the content of character in situations like this.

My point is that through our policy of “toleration” and cultural “sensitivity” we are actually producing or fostering increased racism and segregation in our kids. Rather if we demanded legal immigration and assimilation then we would actually foster more cooperation and less division. I simply believe that to focus on whether the kids acted appropriately or not is the wrong question and the wrong place to focus our energy. I believe it would be aimed at the progressive policies that are tearing this country apart politically, socially, economically, and ethically.

Ignorant hicks?? Well, well, well. Says Dr Pot to Dr Kettle. I am from Appalachia. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this “h” word in my lifetime. I can tell you about discrimation. And I AM from the USA. Discrimination by any other name is still discrimination and still hate speech. It doesn’t hurt any less just because the elite media and Hollywood deems it OK to use such terminology against a class of people in this country. Only small minded people like you would use hate speech and slurs to call someone else out for using hate speech and slurs. Priceless.

That being said, I am still standing and refuse to fall into your PC craptrap. Try as you might, you cannot force Americans into your Marxist PC ideology. The severe actions of the school will only reinforce the divide and hatred between the races. I am glad the students are aware of what is going on in government and how their rights are being taken from them. This will only strengthen their resolve against unfair practices and against the Marxist PC speech police.

When you were in high school, and you played another school, you root for your school, not for your country! No one is against the USA, and this has nothing to do with that. These were spoiled white kids making fun of other kids who do not look like them. If a child is born in this country, he or she is automatically a citizen, and those are OUR laws in the United States. I have many friends from Texas, some are Mexican, but they are third or fourth generation. Just because you are of a hispanic ethnicity, does not make you illegal. Should we go back to calling people dumb mics and japs? Does anyone remember when Japs were the big “immigrant” group that was disliked, or the INNA signs in the 1800′s (INNA: Irish Need Not Apply). If you want to have the immigration debate, you used to just be able to show up on a boat at Ellis Island, and that’s it, you are a citizen. Unless you are of Native American decent, we are all immigrants. If we made it easier for SOME to become legal citizens, and then cracked down on those who come here and don’t get a job or pay taxes and remained illegally, that would solve the problem. Most people do want to come here and work, and if given the option, would happily pay taxes and pay for their healthcare. We make it very very difficult just to get a green card or become a citizen. That is why the Russians are willing to become mail order brides, just to get citizenship. This used to be the land of opportunity, but no more.

What made this team feel the need to chant “USA, USA”? Are we to assume that all the children on the other team are “wetbacks” and that them and their families snuck into this country illeagally? Think of this, what if all the hispanic kids on the other team are Americans and that their families have been here a few generations, Now you have a team feeling the need to point out they are the real “USA” citizens and because the others are hispanic they will never really be a citizen. This is morally wrong and has nothing to do with political correctness. In the Olympics, the other teams are from other countries.

They could have turned this around without having to get politics involved, and humiliate the racist kids at the same time. What makes me wonder is why didn’t any of the other team take up the chant? Did they not have enough time? Or maybe they consider themselves Mexican or another Latin Am citizen? My biggest beef is that the other team had a gigantic opportunity to take a bite out of racial tensions and instead made it worse.

When are we ever going to get off of this “perception” that everything “IS” race based? and grow up? I hate (yes, I said ‘hate’) to say it, but if we are ever going to get out of this cesspool of stupidity, some one has to show some spine and a little skin, sooner or later.

“….an incident of racism…“ would be students chanting something like ”Whites Rule, Wetbacks Drool“ or ”Knock the Brown Down“ or ”Brown Can, White Can’t“ or ”Americans Rock, Mexes Suck” and vice versa of any of the above. Yep, I’ve heard all of them. And I don’t approve of or tolerate any of it. I wonder if students chanting “Mexico, Mexico, Mexico” would cause the same uproar?

BAIKONUR Some so assimilate but a good portion don”t. I live in Florida and travel to Central and South Florida a lot, you would think that at the most there would be signs in both Spanish and English. However, I see more and more signs in only Spanish. I see more and more people speaking only Spanish and refuse to speak English. I see them instead of going to Italian or an American Diner they go to a Mexican or Cuban restaurant. There have been times where I have gone into a Mexican Restaurant and only one out of ten people (including me) is speaking English. Is this assimilating? It‘s not while others are I’d say most, at least here in FL don’t.

This is saying the exact opposite. It is the team chanting ‘USA’ that is making the other team feel un-American. This was a match between two teams from the USA, not an international match between two nations. Why would one of the teams chant USA? The implication is that the other team is not ‘USA.’ And yet they are, they are Hispanic, but they are as American as the Anglo-Americans.
