Higher Education Blogger Fired For Criticizing African-American Students

Academia’s outsized love of political correctness is, by this point, infamous. But did you know that journalism pertaining to academia is now being expected to follow similar standards?

No? Neither did Naomi Schaefer Riley, a higher education reporter with 15 years experience who was recently fired from the Chronicle of Higher Education for criticizing several black PhD students for giving their discipline a bad name by writing about unserious topics.

Let’s start from the beginning. On April 20, 2012, the Chronicle of Higher Education ran an article titled “A New Generation of Black Studies Ph.D’s.”  The article was essentially a collection of five short profiles, which are reproduced below for the reader to peruse:

That’s what I would say about Ruth Hayes’ dissertation, “‘So I Could Be Easeful’: Black Women’s Authoritative Knowledge on Childbirth.” It began because she “noticed that nonwhite women’s experiences were largely absent from natural-birth literature, which led me to look into historical black midwifery.” How could we overlook the nonwhite experience in “natural birth literature,” whatever the heck that is? It’s scandalous and clearly a sign that racism is alive and well in America, not to mention academia.

Then there is Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, author of “Race for Profit: Black Housing and the Urban Crisis of the 1970s.” Ms. Taylor believes there was apparently some kind of conspiracy in the federal government’s promotion of single family homes in black neighborhoods after the unrest of the 1960s. Single family homes! The audacity! [...]

But topping the list in terms of sheer political partisanship and liberal hackery is La TaSha B. Levy. According to the Chronicle, “Ms. Levy is interested in examining the long tradition of black Republicanism, especially the rightward ideological shift it took in the 1980s after the election of Ronald Reagan. Ms. Levy’s dissertation argues that conservatives like Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, John McWhorter, and others have ‘played one of the most-significant roles in the assault on the civil-rights legacy that benefited them.’” The assault on civil rights? Because they don’t favor affirmative action they are assaulting civil rights? Because they believe there are some fundamental problems in black culture that cannot be blamed on white people they are assaulting civil rights?

The initial response to this blog post was, to put it mildly, apopleptic, as the comments rapidly degenerated into accusations of racism and bullying. This prompted Schaefer Riley to write yet another blog post defending herself from the most commonly made attacks:

The comments regarding my post seem to boil down to the following:

I am picking on people because they are black (and I am a racist).
I am picking on people even though I don’t have a Ph.D.
I am picking on people who are too young and inexperienced to defend themselves.
I am picking on people even though I haven’t read their entire dissertations.

Let me take the first two criticisms first. My qualifications to post on this blog consist of the fact that I have been a journalist writing about higher education for close to 15 years now. My work has been published in every major newspaper in the country and I have written two books on the subject as well. The editors at those papers and those publishers and at The Chronicle have all been aware that I hold no advanced degree. Black studies is now an academic discipline at most universities, which means I get to comment on that too. If the dissertations in question were written by white people, I’d call them irrelevant and partisan as well. Moreover, I have called other disciplines (having nothing to do with race) irrelevant and partisan.

I find the idea that there is something particularly heinous in criticizing graduate students or dissertations to be laughable at best. Just because they are still called students doesn’t mean they’re not grown-ups. When someone in their 30s (me) criticizes the dissertation topic of someone in their 20s, that’s “bullying“? Boy, life as a graduate student in a trendy discipline at a prestigious university sure is tough.

Schaefer Riley was, as the above profiles indicate, too hard on herself regarding the ages of her targets. One of them is nearly 40. This makes her possibly older than even Schaefer Riley herself. Nevertheless, the Chronicle apparently found the idea of having these beautiful, unique academic snowflakes criticized to be too much to bear, and fired Schaefer Riley with this explanation:

S]everal thousand of you spoke out in outrage and disappointment that The Chronicle had published an article that did not conform to the journalistic standards and civil tone that you expect from us.

We’ve heard you, and we have taken to heart what you said.

We now agree that Ms. Riley’s blog posting did not meet The Chronicle’s basic editorial standards for reporting and fairness in opinion articles. . . .

This is an ironic admission, because just a few days earlier, on May 3rd, the same person writing this official explanation for firing Schaefer Riley had said this:

I urge readers instead to view this posting as an opportunity—to debate Riley’s views, challenge her, set things straight as you see fit. Take a moment to read The Chronicle’s front-page story about the future of black studies, written by Chroniclereporter Stacey Patton and weigh in.

Please join the debate.

So much for “joining the debate.” The original article is now behind a paywall, and Schaefer Riley has been fired.

But, of course, this story wouldn’t be complete unless we heard from the students who Schaefer Riley criticized. In a feat of either sheer self-aggrandizement or courage (depending on your point of view), they published a lengthy statement attacking Schaefer Riley for her “hit job” on their work. So far, the only publication to carry this statement has been the Socialist Worker. Highlights follow (Warning, some offensive language is included):

Instead of taking her own advice given to her readers to “just read the dissertations,” Riley displays breathtaking arrogance and gutless anti-intellectualism by drawing such severe conclusions about our work and African American studies as a whole based on four or five sentence synopses of our dissertation projects. In fact, Riley has never read our dissertations, as they are in process. Nor has she read a chapter or even an abstract of our work, but that does not stop her from a full throttle attack on our scholarship and credibility.[...]

One can only assume that in a bid to not be “out-niggered” by her right-wing cohort, Riley found some Black women graduate students to beat up on. Despite her attempts to silence us personally, and indeed the discipline as a whole, her exhortations confirm the need for the vigorous study and investigation of Black life in the United States and beyond.[...]

Our work is not about victimization; it is about liberation. Liberating the history, culture and politics of our people from the contortions and distortions of a white supremacist framework that has historically denied our agency and subjectivity as active participants in the making of the world we live in.[...]

Finally, shame on the Chronicle of Higher Education. As students we welcome the vigorous interrogation and examination of our work that comes with life in the academy. We do not welcome smug attacks by lazy bloggers, in your employment, who resort to racial caricature in a pitiful attempt to drum up controversy and interest in an otherwise underwhelming and pedestrian career. Riley’s rant is typical matter for personal blogs and anonymous postings in comment sections.

There’s an important sentence in there, and no, it’s not the one that involves the n-word. It’s this one: “In fact, Riley has never read our dissertations, as they are in process.” The disingenuousness of this sentence is breathtaking. Bad enough that the authors conveniently ignore the fact that the problem is not that Schaefer Riley thinks these women will produce slipshod work, but rather that she thinks they never should have been permitted to start writing about these topics in the first place. But to attack her for not reading dissertations that no one aside from these womens’ dissertation advisers have been allowed to read, in whole or in part, and which have not, as yet, been given any academic credibility by anyone because they have not been written? Give me a break.

In other words, for the crime of criticizing dissertation topics for dissertations that have not been vetted by peer review, and that for all the Chronicle of Higher Education knows may get failing grades, but were unfortunately written by people who happened to be black, a 15 year veteran of Higher Education reporting had to be fired by the Chronicle. This is a sad day for journalism.

    Sounds like these folks have an ‘Advance Ph.D’, that is one that is granted to those who haven’t yet written their dissertation, nor survied the rigors of peer-review! Clearly, they‘d rather rummage around in the garbage can of their ’hire’ education, than mingle with those who could truly make a difference for their cause–a difference based on the self-sufficiency and basic intellect of the individual, black or white, rather than depend on the crutch of group-incited racism! I guess education credentials have gone the way of home mortages and auto loans–just borrow from the future and maybe, someday, you won’t ever have to pay if you holler enough!

      I attended two colleges, and have a masters in education. I have sat under four african american professors. Had any of these four not been black, I can guarantee you that they would not have been hired. Outside of the “black” issue, they had no topic. Dr Chepenaytor Thompson at the University of Georgia had to be the worst of the bunch. She was dumb as a brick, and had the common sense of a stone.

      This is racial bullying by the priveleged minority on full display. Their “studies” are political and if you read some of the key words in both their work and their backlash comments to the blogger—it smacks of Derrick Bell and “critical theory”. You know….the theory that racism is inherent in the U.S. and will NEVER go away, so therefore you have the right to rail against and silence any member of society who disagrees with you in any way until you have fully drained them of their reputation, earning a living, and forced show of respect that would only be given to dictators out of fear. Let’s face it, this is what these people believe. They do not believe the world is “just” until they have white people in chains.

      Latest info on fauxcohantas Warren shows she not only isnt cherokee, she isnt a scholar either. A review of her scholarly works found them way below harvard undergrad standards, not just minoroty female professor standards. Yet she still claims her lie was not done to benefit her career. Being right about affirmative racism does not make me feel better about the lifetime of being cheated by these phony dips. Payback is going to be a beach.

      I never heard of this woman before today so I don’t know which way she leans politically but she certainly seems to be spot in her observations.

      Sometimes academics and media types suffer from momentary bouts of clarity and pay the full price for their indescretion.

    There are many countries trying many different things. Many have a number of different ethnic groups & have tried socialismor communism.

    After another 10 or 20 more years of political science, economic, social science dissertations by many different people from many different countries will the thesis of the people in this article stand the test of time?

    I think not.

    But they will have collected their salary & say it is all water under the bridge.

    I feel really sad for everyone in this article. Everyone loses. The students will continue to be enabled along into a ‘pretend’ life and the one person who sincerely made the effort to awaken them back into reality has been dismissed by the enablers. So sad.

      I am sick of this and do not feel sad one bit for the whiny black students. to some all they see is color, the universities enable this, so does affirmative action etc etc. there comes a point when racism begins again but for different reasons because I am sick of being a 30 year old jewish white woman with money who votes republican who is blamed for every colored persons problems. you want to be smart you want to be educated? don’t waste your precious college education in black studies it is ridiculous and then please oh please do not whine one second when you are criticized for being an idiot who cannot see past your own skin color and allows your extra melanin to dictate your life and purpose

They are OWED for hundreds of years as slavery, having to drink at segregated water fountains, lynchings by southern white mobs, school segregation, and on and on.     Anytime your point out something to black person its racism its arrogance amoungst blacks that they believe that they are infalable. The truth of the matter is getting a PHD today is not what it used to be and the standard is no where as tough. Giving people degrees that haven’t earned them just because they are part of racial group does not serve society as a whole and set up the minority for failure. I have seen in the corporate world minorities promoted to high level of authority with no experience or ability and simply done so because of the racial group they belong to. And 90% of them fail miserably because the were set up for failure and didn’t get the position because of merit. This race to push giver out degrees not earned to correct some fantasy of inequality that liberals say is there is the worng thing to do.

      I think someone needs to write a book called “The true History of Black people.”
      Pull no punches and only use facts. Cover the Black population from every corner of the globe, former slaves and never been enslaved. Compare the current lifestyles of both those categories….Would be an eye opening experience for everyone, but mostly the blacks in America.
      Even with nothing but historical facts, devoid of opinion, the book would be called racist.

      In one of the chapters please explain how 27% of blacks are on food stamps and less than 1% of whites are. Then explain how the only reported stat (by blacks and whites) is that there are more whites on food stamps than blacks.

    The bogus degrees these things are given, have made degrees worthless. I’d take a junior high dropout over any day, for any purpose, over ever black PHD I’ve worked with over the last 30 years. The dropouts, know they don’t know anything about anything, and are easily taught, the black PHD drones, think they are experts, when in reality, they are to stupid to even realize that it doesn’t mean much to have a phd in electrical engineering, when you haven’t taken any math above algebra.

Why shouldn’t your topics be scrutinized? Why shouldn’t you be held to a high standard. Are you children that must be coddled? You should have stood up for her right to criticize you and intelligently countered what you disagreed with. To make it all about race is beyond disgusting. Grow up and step up because the rest of us aren’t going to shut up.

    Race for the top…(key word Race) Atlanta Teacher erase students answers and replace tests with the correct answers in order to receive big stimulus RACE for the Top dollars.

    The education system, in America is sinking like the big T in the Sea. PC, Big Key Low G doo doo dollars won’t educate the kids… because the administrators and kids will take #2 pencils and erase the wrong bubbles and replace with the right bubbles.

    For an adult lifetime I have strived to genuinely understand why American blacks crave victimhood. Crave it. Opinions and hysterics on this are easy to find, but rarely do the claims survive even elementary examination. It would be curious if it were not so tragic.

    This has to do with the education bubble as well. The educations people are getting are not worth what they’re paying. It’s fine if you want to learn about transgender poetry from the 20th century. Just don’t take out a $60,000 loan to do it. Do it in your spare time.

    Science, business, nursing, etc are valuable degrees. PHD’s black radicalism are no different than buying a fancy car. It’s a luxury good.

      There are plenty of minority achievements listed in regular coursework. The fact that they have tremendously less historical achievements is their own fault. Their are millions of blacks that were never under the yoke of slavery, but they are not better off than the people who were. In fact, most of them are far worse off than the sons and daughters of American slaves. (not justifying slavery by any means…)
      So why don’t they take the hard look and find out why and fix the problem within their own culture? You cannot overcome what you refuse to acknowledge.

      Note that 4 out of these 5 students wrote about a subject within the black community .. isn’t that racist? I think that anyone who still clings to the belief that they would be better off in their “home country” (after generations in America) they should have to go and spend a year there trying to survive.

      I wonder how many of these “African” Americans could survive? Would they then have a respect for America and all they have been offered (and with affirmative action .. an unfair advantage at that!)

      I believe that more people than we know are beyond sick and tired of the weak as p*ss “it‘s because I’m…(fill in the blank) arguments coming from every side. Black, gay, fat, disabled, you name it. None are so institutionalized as the black plight, and seemingly beyond reproach. The liberal-minded know no bounds in their inflicting the cost on society to assuage their guilt, and it’s reaching a crescendo. Having grown up in the South, and being acquainted with regular folk who happen to be black, and the larger group who happen to be human secondarily, one wonders how much longer the ‘victims’ will restrain themselves (relatively speaking) in their quest to make victims of us all. There will be resistance, and then what they seem to thirst for will have begun.

    Ron Paul values are not good enough for the sheeple? They want good looks, charm, and high energy jet setting types.
    So when Your children are threatened with nukes right here in the USA by Russia over Iran, just suck up and huddle in Your beds hoping. When someone You know and love is forced into the armed service by new policy and comes home in a body bag, remember Your vote. When Your car is stopped at gun point by para military and You are stripped searched just remember You voted for someone else. When you wake up in a FEMA camp and have to be thought retrained, remember who you voted for. When you go to the grocery store in a mad hurry and the shelves are empty because no body wants the US dollar, remember your vote. When the riots come to Your community remember your vote. When Your children are hungry and scaried remember You voted for the same old marxist policies. If You don’t take this seriously, You might when Your son or daughter dies for this mess.

    it will take many generations more for the self hate to be leeched from the black comminity..unfortunatly it getting to the point where nobody cares anymore..were all just to busy to give a flip…thier choice, thier lives, thier hate…not to worry,,,they will allways have progressives who pretend they care

      Nothing is so satisfying as letting the Left read the words of one of their glorified founders. Why blacks on the Left aim so low for a mediocre result is beyond me – maybe it’s the best they can do. But I think not. When pressed by higher goals and standards by black teachers they respond in similar numbers as non-blacks. Leftist blacks are the result of the bigotry of white Leftists. Destroy their morality, keep them stupid and angry then pay/reward them to stay that way, then give them the vote.

      That speech was about 8 minutes long and was given by a black minister named James David Manning. I have listened to it 7 or 8 times. It’s on the computer, but I can’t explain how I get there.

      Darwin was right. Eugenics. Africa will never be any more than what it is because the gene pool is very shallow. BTW, those dissertations had to be boring. They need to study something that will contribute to society. That is too difficult, though. It is much easier to take. They are their own worst enemy.
