A highly decorated U.S. Army Ranger was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday during his 14th deployment to the Middle East. Twenty-nine-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Kristoffer B. Domeij and two other soldiers died on October 22 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. NBC Nightly News on Sgt. Domeij’s service:
With his 14 deployments, Sgt. Domeij becomes the Ranger with the most deployments to date killed in action.
Sgt. Domeij “had the value of an entire strike force on the battlefield,” said Col. Mark W. Odom, commander of Sgt. Domeij’s 75th Ranger Regiment, in a press release.
Sgt. Domeij served four deployments in Iraq and another nine stints in Afghanistan. During that time he was awarded two Bronze Stars. ABC News writes that his third Bronze Star, earned during his final tour in Afghanistan, will be awarded posthumously along with the Purple Heart, according to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
Sgt.Domeij had been a member of the team that helped rescue captured Pvt. Jessica Lynch from insurgents in Iraq in 2003. He was also one of the first ground soldiers qualified as a Ranger Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), which meant he was able to coordinate Air Force and Navy air attacks from his ground position.
Domeij’s hometown newspaper, The Pomerado News, writes that the Army Ranger was remembered in a moment of silence at Rancho Bernardo High School Monday where he attended, and principal Paul Robinson described him as being a “fun-loving young man. … He was just a good kid.”
“(He) will be dearly missed by the men of 2nd Ranger Battalion,” said Lt. Col. David Hodne, the battalion’s commander, to the Pomerado News. “He was one of those men who as known by all as much for his humor, enthusiasm and loyal friendship, as he was for his unparalleled skill and bravery under fire.
“This was a Ranger you wanted at your side when the chips were down,” Hodne said. “He and his family are very much part of the fabric that defines 2nd Ranger Battalion. He is irreplaceable … in our formation … and in our hearts.”
Domeij grew up near San Diego, and is survived by his loving wife Sarah and two daughters Mikajsa and Aaliyah, of Lacey, Washington.
Also killed in the incident were 1st Lt. Ashley White, 24, and Pvt. 1st Class Christopher A. Horns, 20. Horns was on his first deployment, according to Special Operations Command.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 9:35pmAllow me to quote the Heyjim55 on the wounded veteran at OWS story:
Are we sure this is a vetran of the military?? just asking anyone can buy uniforms patches and jackets online or by going to a military surplus store and look the part, I feel sorry for this kid and his folks but lets not assume the US military is down their shoulder to shoulder with these Marxists, and don’t think for one moment that Van Jones did not think about using a military fakes to fool the media or the public.

We each have our path to follow…some stupidly (you two even bothering to troll on this site – let alone discuss this honorable soldier) and those that truly examined their lives to understand a greater calling for mankind. I pray for the both of you…however, I feel the prayer will fall on deaf ears.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 12:28amI joined the army in 1984 as an Infantyman, went to Airborne school and was planning on Going to fort Bragg. At this time the Army was starting the 3rd ranger Bat and Most of us in jump school at the time were convinced to volunteer for the Rangers. After jump school we went to R.I.P. ( Ranger Indoctrination Program) for 3 weeks. To be a ranger you have to be a good athelete, smart and very dedicated. i spent 6 months in the 3rd bat until I was injured in a parachute jump in the old t-10-1b chute and was not allowed to jump anymore (several compression fractures to vertebreas). The training and p.t in a Ranger bat is intense; for the entire time there i had one injury to another, from broken toes and fingers (untreated), crotch rot, infected bug bites, etc… as well as every other soldier i served with. For this hero to have been in a Ranger Batallion for so long shows that he was a very dedicated honorable person. I served with a regular straight leg infantry unit until the end of my enlistment until 1988. the infantry is also demanding ,but no where close to the demands of our Rangers. i will pray for him and his family and his fellow soldiers. He was the best of the best and i mean human beings

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 12:53amSurvivor101 . . . Sorry – you’re nothing more than a sinkhole of situational ethics, faux honor, ideological inconsistency, and self-serving pathos. Unless you’re willing to honor all honest and courageous military, your support of a few means nothing to them, you, or us.
Do yourself and the world a favor and grow up before you start bumping your gums again.

Thanks for your service. You endured one of the toughest periods of being a Ranger. When 3/75 was first formed, they really put them through the ringer. The wash out rate was very high those first few years, and they pushed the unit very hard.
I got to Cco 3/75 in 87 when it was over at the 5000 area. The original crew was just finishing up their first four years. They were a good bunch and sure were good in the woods.
Side note, but the evolution of the modern Ranger is rather interesting. I left in 92 to go to college, and the change was starting then. Now days, Rangers are way more special ops oriented. RIP was replaced with RASP. In RASP, the first few weeks are to weed out the week. The rest of the course is some pretty high lever shooting and skills stuff. The Rangers of today are much more similar to delta than what we were back then.
I am sure you can remember the days (pre night vision), where we walked through the woods so much in the dark with huge loads on our back, We gained a freakish ability to walk over and around stuff that we could not even see.
thanks again, enjoyed your post.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 7:04amArmy deployment lengths –
Just so you know. Special ops folks work at a very intense pace. Their deployments are generally much shorter than what a conventional unit (such as the 82nd, 3rd ID, 101st….)
The special ops folks like the Rangers are generally gone for three to four months, then rotate back.
Conventional units generally deploy for one year at a time. In the early days of Iraq, many units were doing 15 month deployments.
I did not see in the article how many months he was deployed, but with 14 trips, I would bet he had to have between 40 to 50 months in combat. That is a pretty good chunk of time for a man with a family. It is a very long time, when you consider he did all of his deployments with the elite Ranger Regiment.
On the conventional side of the house, we have soldiers with up to five or more deployments now. My youngest brother has four deployments under his belt now.
We have many soldiers with a whole slew of combat time in this war.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 10:31amThis man should be receiving the medal of Honor. Having deployed that many times and being in the thick of it like he was so willing to do more than qualifies him for that medal. I imagine with his expertise and competence in leadership many of his fellow soldiers are alive who wouldn’t be without him there with them in many a combat situation. I salute this man and truly believes he does deserve our Nation’s highest honor. May God bless and keep him forever.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 12:07pmWhat a schmuck! What this shows you is how ruthless the U.S. is when it comes to abusing it’s own people, both as combat tools and socially as propaganda tools for its own aspirations. This is called burning the candle at both ends. Sure, its twice the light right now, but you get to where you have to do something a lot faster toward the middle.

I appreciate your respect for the fallen Ranger. He will receive a third BSM.
This man served honorably, but that does not constitute the Medal of Honor. Not being flippant with you, but study the Medal of Honor a bit online, and I think you will see what I mean.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 12:12pmThis is what I believe many of us are thinking. If we are to continue these conflicts, and it is so important to do so, then bring back the draft and let everyone serve, male and female. To do so, the administration will have to show why we are still there and why. The Taliban will continue to exist and succeed as long as Pakistan(at least an element of them) continue to support them. al-Qaeda has been demolished in Afghanistan. Other than protesting and supporting the poppy crop, what else do we need to do there. Send in Blackwater to protect the poppies if the govt; thinks that is so important.
