Hilary Rosen Apologizes to Ann Romney: Lets Put the Faux War Against Stay at Home Moms to Rest

Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen came out with a statement Thursday afternoon apologizing to Ann Romney for saying the wife of GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney “never worked a day in her life.”

Rosen’s initial comments Wednesday night ignited a firestorm of controversy and prompted several high-ranking Obama administration and Democratic Party officials — as well as first lady Michelle Obama — to condemn her remarks. Ann Romney hit back at Rosen during an appearance on Fox News Thursday morning, saying she made the “career choice” to be a stay-at-home mom.

Rosen’s statement, via Talking Points Memo:

Let’s put the faux “war against stay at home moms” to rest once and for all. As a mom I know that raising children is the hardest job there is. As a pundit, I know my words on CNN last night were poorly chosen. In response to Mitt Romney on the campaign trail referring to his wife as a better person to answer questions about women than he is, I was discussing his poor record on the plight of women’s financial struggles. Here is my more fulsome view of the issues. As a partner in a firm full of women who work outside of the home as well as stay at home mothers, all with plenty of children, gender equality is not a talking point for me. It is an issue I live every day. I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let’s declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance.

Rosen‘s statement came after a CNN appearance earlier Thursday in which she didn’t back down from her comments. In a subsequent appearance later in the day, she reiterated her apology and said this was “not a debate between stay-at-home moms and working moms.”

“I have been a stay-at-home mom,” Rosen said on CNN. “This is not a debate about stay-at-home moms vs. working moms.”

Rosen said the point she had been trying to make was that Mitt Romney should not hold his wife up as his top surrogate on women and the economy because Ann Romney has not had to work to make a living. She also accused the Romney campaign of forcing the issue as a way to distract from the former Massachusetts governor’s record.

“I applaud your decision to stay home and raise what are obviously five wonderful boys,” Rosen said in comments directed toward Ann Romney. “I think your husband needs to stand up for women’s economic struggles. So far we have not seen how he’s going to do this on the campaign trail.”

TREATY…Rosen didn’t apologise. In typical liberal doubletalk she apologised for any offense taken, not for her illwill towards women who stay home to raise their children. Her words were clear in intent and thought, Ann Romney is married to a wealthy man and stayed home to raise her 5 sons which in Rosen’s warped world view does not amount to anything resembling “a day’s work in her life”. Even ignoring the fact that Ann Romney has been dealing with cancer and MS on top of raising her boys, Rosen has in this one sitting openly disparaged all women everywhere who stay home to raise their children because their husbands have the means to accomodate it. The words were clear, they‘re weren’t “poorly chosen” or “misspoken”. Rosen’s words said exactly what Rosen believes..that women who choose to stay home to raise their kids because their husbands can afford it have not done a “hard day’s work in their lives”.

Home schooling is not a job or a career – its called being a PARENT. I come home from work and make dinner and do dishes – its not a job, its called being a HUSBAND. Home schooling is a luxury, not a career. I wish i could stay home and teach my kids – instead i have to wait until 6 pm to try to undo the damage that was done at the government school. Hopefully, in a couple years we will be at the point where we can afford to send them to private school

For those who say it is a career. BS. It is a choice – and a great choice. Yes, it can be hard but it should not be work (or else you wouldnt be doing it). Community service is not a career but it is also a great thing.

Besides, i’d b willing to bet the romney kids had bigtime tutors and some sort of private program on the side. Lets not pretend ann did it all herself

Hilary said exactly what she said because she meant it. Appearantly she not only thinks that house wife isn’t a real job she also begrudges a woman because she has a good man to earn for the family while she takes care of the home and children.

There are many women who want to stay at home with their kids but cannot due to finances. A major part of this financial problem is GOVERNMENT TAXATION. There are taxes hidden in everything you buy including phone service. If liberals were really on the side of the working mom, they would do everything in their power to decrease government taxation. Then, more moms could be required to do only one job instead of three – being a mother, being an employee, and being a slave to this government.

A Conservative group truly needs to do a study laying out all of the promises made by the women’s lib movement decades ago and compare them with the state of our nation, our children, the family and women today. Is anyone in America better off because of the women’s movement? I, for one, HATE pumping gas and having to get out of my car at all at the gas station. I miss the attendant.

I am sorry but she has angered the wrong group…I have had up to three jobs at once, but when I had children they came first. Sacrifices were made and I now stay home and homeschool our children. I work WAY harder now then I did when I had 3 jobs and worked 65 hours a week. Because mom‘s don’t get days off, or sick days and when you go on vacation the kids come then too. The only time I get to myself is when my husband takes the kids for a day and lets me. Even after they go to bed at night, I have laundry and dishes and a husband to attend too. I think the last mom’s day off I had was over 6 months ago.

If anything makes me want to vote for Romney, it’s this stupid, self-serving attitude of people who think a woman staying home (not in public sector) is not capable of being a real woman. Now, my attitude is: the women who have to work, or prefer to work are not doing their God given jobs, to raise children.
No wonder most of today’s children are failures in everything they do, they needed a mom & a dad to help them be responsible and respectful and have good values of a home life.

Jews like Hilary Rosen have a profound contempt for stay at home mothers. For 2 main reasons
      1. They have more children.
      2. They home school.
They would much rather have women be careerists and not have children. Those that do have children will immediately turn them over to the nearest indoctrination center (daycare, schools, college) and proceed with their #1 priority…their careers. Good for Ann Romney. Even though i can’t stand her husband.

The 1st thing is the family unit is in real trouble. There used to be stability, comfort, suport and direction.Back in the late 1900′s was when the family was one man one woman and how ever many children came along. And now april 2021 the family unit is nothing like when I was a child. The parent‘s continuesly have to see who is watching or listening how you deal with your children or your spouce and in some accation’s they put they‘re unwanted medling witch in some sitchuation’s not knowing all the fact’s(and why should they?)this gose also to husband and wife. When I was really young my mother was raising 5 of us we were on wellfare because of a divorse but she tried her best.At age 12 there was a need for me to be placed in a foster home where there were 12 of us foster and adopted. The family‘s ecconommic’s were the opposite of my biologicle family.I don’t know when it was coined but the fraise stay at home parent is a lie.Weather there is 1 child or 20 kid’s.That parent dose not only has the lion‘s share of the child care as well as the domestic ressidencial duty’s and they do the shopping school isseu‘s the doctor repiar people the pet’s end up in there too.It was a major insult and it as it seem’s was only to target Mitt.I had the abilety to be poor and not poor and both my mother’s in no way could be seen as not working. And they worked harder than those in the 9 to 5′s!So now with family’s cohegtion dieclining. I’m confident Ann Romney was a hands-on mother. I’m a Mormon mom, and now a lawyer. But I stayed home with my six children for 20 years, because, like Ann, I know that shaping the intellect and values of my children was too important a job to be delegated to some minimum wage worker.

The issue is not whether the Romney’s have had maids or nannies or butlers or serfs!

The issue is that an Obama insider disparages EVERY WOMAN who chooses not to be employed outside their home as “non-working”. Whoo. That wouldn‘t cut into Obama’s base of the food stamp legion he has been working so hard to cultivate and keep on the plantation, right?

The apology is an attempt to differentiate between Mrs. Romney and EVERY WOMAN who chooses not t be employed outside their home, and twist it into an economic argument. If Ms. Rosen is not aware, economic concerns of women who do not work outside of their home is even more attenuated as BUDGETING SKILLS become much more important, unlike this president who has yet to submit a realistic budget for the family of Americans he is supposed to have in mind, or the Romneys, who do not appear to have to mind about money.

WEBWITHDEB…what Rosen said makes more sense today when the Democrats stated that Rosen is being attacked because she’s a lesbian (cue victim card). I doubt many of Rosen’s detractors even realised she was a lesbian before this was announced. But it makes perfect sense now. A militant, angry lesbian would have a problem with a traditional family that allowed the mother to be home with her children to raise them. It’s made even worse for Rosen in light of the fact that Ann Romney has been dealing with cancer and MS while raising five boys. Ann Romney should be applauded and held as an example rather than vilified and belittled as Rosen attempted. But as I began to say..it makes perfect sense. Rosen has been fighting against the traditional family for years…a father and mother having and raising children together (with no third parties involved), the mother at home raising the kids while a strong and successful HUSBAND provides for them all. It’s everything a miltant lesbian like Rosen sees against her topsy turvy homosexual perspective. Women like Ann Romney have had people like Rosen’s gun sights on them for years. This isnt‘ just another stupid liberal who’s mask fell off it goes way beyond that now..this is an angry lesbian trying to devalue the traditional family as part of her agenda.

Wouldn’t it better serve you and everyone to try to emulate that success rather than disparage it? Like I said..spare us the “I hate rich guys/poor widdle me” routine it has no traction here. Let me give you a clue lady…Romney will be the nominee and the conservative base will rally behind him. Another four years of Barack Obama is a death knell to this country and conservatives know it. A Barack Obama not beholden to the voter is a very dangerous animal indeed for this republic. So reserve your “I don’t like rich guys” blather for the huffpo crowd where it’s appreciated…savvy?

@ AVENGERK: As usual, you are spot on! Hearing (reading) GODLOVINMOM whine about “poor pitiful me – the rich have life easier” reminds me of what is wrong with America today: Socialist liberals jealous of the wealthy, wanting to tax them more so their pitiful little lives will be more “fair”. Whatever benefits in life the Romney’s have enjoyed were hard earned and a gift from God – which he acknowledges every year by paying a 15% (no, not 10%) tithe to his church. Or, perhaps the “GODLOVINMOM” is angry because Romney’s flavor of Christianity is different from hers – and of course only HERS is thr RIGHT religion! Good Grief!!! Let’s all just be happy that the future President of the United States knows how to earn money, create jobs, and balance a budget!

GODLOVINMOM is a regular poster here and certainly no leftist-leaning “troll”. I think she is expressing what many of us felt over Romney not being our first choice. Even though he wasn’t even in my top three of the nominees, I will vote for Mitt as I believe GODLOVINMOM likely will. However so many Conservatives don’t connect to Romney for a multitude of reasons.

      1) He was the establishment’s choice and was promised support after bowing to McCain in 2008
      2) He couldn’t even win the nomination against McCain……for goodness sake.
      3) While the Romneys may have not always had massive wealth, they surely have for many years…..and good for them! But, it is difficult for them to connect with struggling Americans. The Obama campaign will be hammering on that fact from now til early November. That was/is the entire point behind the Occupy insanity. Dems also knew Romney was going to be the GOP pick.
      4) Romney was Governor of liberal Massachusetts…..not exactly the most Conservative state in the country.
      5) He implemented RomneyCare which is a (pun intended) tough pill to swallow.

      What did I miss?

My point is…..MOM is expressing her disappointment that the Conservative voice in America didn’t end up with a nominee we can really rally behind. Did we learn nothing in 2008?

And, hey…..cut MOM a little slack, she is still working at her full-time, extremely valuable job which was the point of the above article to begin with.

Perhaps Romney‘s connect with as many American’s as the Obamas but that actually was my point. Conservatives were looking more for of a Tea Party candidate instead of getting the nominee the GOP chose for us 4 years ago.

I can assure you I have no problems/biases with Romney’s success. I applaud it. However, the Dems are going to attack his wealth at every opportunity and continue this faux class warfare of the Occupy idiocy. I don’t see that boding well for Romney over the next 6 months.

The fact that you are perceiving any bias against success from my post is incredulous.

What I meant to say was Conservatives didn’t want a Moderate Republican who may “connect” with about as many Americans as the Obamas. That isn’t exactly very comforting. The midterms made a conservative statement that the GOP ignored and Conservatives felt we deserved a better choice than the nominee got received the nod four years ago. It doesn’t make me feel very good knowing I like Mitt slightly better than I liked McCain. I’m not very confident Mitt will energize the base sufficiently to win. I’m for ABO but most people want to be “for” the candidate, not merely “against” the one currently in office.

Seems to me a waste of a life and they never get anywhere so they “blame others” for their “blight”in their miserable-little-small minded lives. It does not have to be, but this is what they choose.
I did not approve of the hlth care Romney passed in his state but he did explain it was the state’s choice etc.. Back handed apologies always leave me more mad than the issue itself. if your not sorry.. don’t say you are.. The reality here is that even colleges and employers recognize that stay at home mothers are not unable to read, are aware of current events, even occasionally subscribe to newspapers. They volunteer in their communities and therefore often have a much more intouch view on how policies do effect on the bottom rather than how the top derives it to look. At home mothers ( and fathers) have every right to be offended at this.. a choice to sacrifice “more” for the raising of their children is not a declaration of head in sand syndrome.
