‘History Is The Greatest Weapon’: Glenn Beck Talks About the Failure of Politicians to Understand the Past in Powerful Oval Segment

In tonight’s “Oval” speech, Glenn Beck turned to a favorite topic as a lens through which to dissect the problems of modern American politicians – namely, their failure to understand history.

“History is the greatest weapon against one of mankind’s strongest enemies,” Beck said. “Forgetfulness.”

Indeed, according to Beck, it is forgetfulness that is responsible for most of the delinquent behavior and poor responsiveness of today’s political class. They delude themselves about their own importance, according to Beck, believing that they are the only ones who have ever faced a problem.

“They pretended like they were the first Americans to face a challenge, but they were not the first, not even the second,” Beck thundered. “The circumstances change. The cast of characters change. The culture changes. But in the end, the challenges are the same: Prosperity or stagnancy? Freedom or dependency? Justice or injustice? Unity or disunity? The individual or the state?”

Naturally, no one came in for this brand of criticism more strongly than current President Barack Obama, who Beck accused of holding a grudge against the country due to a combination of historical ignorance and personal arrogance.

“If the current President, or any President, stopped to learn some history, stopped to think about what history teaches him, he might realize that America is better than he thinks,” Beck said. “More independent, more industrious, more more capable of great things.”

But, Beck said, even if the President didn’t read history and understand it, his viewers should.

“We’re going to have to fix this mess, and it would be good if you’ve read the manual first,” Beck said.

    An uncomfortably high percentage of high school history teachers only studied history and got their license to teach history so that they could be football coaches. They don‘t really give a crap about history and don’t care if the kids learn history. My daughter was the victim of one such “history” teacher, who handed out packets of information for the kids to read and answer questions, while he sat at his desk on his computer all day. She said he lectured in front of the class maybe once a month. He basically stopped teaching.

      In todays teaching environment a teaching certification is all that’s needed to teach any subject, thank the teachers union for that ruling. (In NYS)

      Sad but true, and not only in high school. At my local community college, the only full-time history instructor recently retired. He was not replaced. History there is now covered by an assortment of underpaid adjunct faculty and full-time instructors who divide their time between history and other disciplines. Meanwhile, they have seen fit to hire dozens of staff and administrators for this and that.

    I don know where else to share this,got a letter from GMAC a month or two ago saying they and 40 or so other gm co are filing Bankruptcy.ok? so I lost my income. I called to see what i could do to hold off my mortgage for a bit and to let them know i have a problem.I got a guy from mexico city MEXICO telling me not to worry,and all my info is safe ,in mexico.SO,THE PEOPLE THAT HOLD MY MORTGAGE,WENT BANKRUPT,SO I HAD TO CALL ANOTHER COUNTRY,TO CONTACT UNION OWNED GMAC TO TELL SOME ONE IN MEXICO I DONT HAVE A JOB,,,,,This sounds like a dumb question,have we been sold out this badly that quick?AND so gmac can go bankrupt on there debt,but i still owe them? there are to many kinds of wrong going on here.sorry this is off subject,just didnt know what else to do with the info

    Mr. Beck is constantly talking about “winning” so that he will be able to write the history, regardless of the truth.

    Like Fascism is a left wing ideology, ignoring World War II.
    Like the French revolution was violent but the American Revolution was just George Washington being rowed across the Potomac by a black guy and that was it.
    Like the only racists left are people older than Mr Beck, even though his next statement is the pendulum has swung to far the other way in favor of minorities.
    Like Star Wars is real and the best model to use for political analysis.

      @marybethelizabeth Well stated and let’s be clear that nothing GB does is “powerful”. But you have to give him credit for figuring out how to extract absurd amounts of money from his audience. And yes people will pay money to have their news selected for them and then presented in a biased that reinforces their ideology and beliefs. And anyone over the age of 15 knows that someone who is constantly referencing God and highlighting how truthful they are….. Are neither Godly nor truthful.

      Why do you Liberals even watch Glenn Beck??? What he says doesn’t make sense to you because you believe in something totally different than Glenn. I watched the video, and it made perfect sense. UNLESS we LEARN and REMEMBER our History we are doomed to fail, over and over again.

    Unfortunately, the first and only thing politicians learn when they get to Washington is what to do and say to hang onto their jobs until they can retire with a huge pension and megabennies. They should have term limits because the voters won’t do it. Voters vaguely know it is their duty to vote so they trot out to the polls and vote name familiarity or for which candidate will get them the most perks.

    Comrade Beck is very correct, there is very little that is new in history but we are probably going to experience something never before seen in history. The Geniuses are purposely destroying the WORLDS banking system. Overnight every penny you have saved, invested,or worked for is lousy toilet paper. Commerce will slam to a halt. Massive lay-offs will occure because there is no way to pay the workers and no way to get rid of what they are making.
    Your supermarkets will be out of food in hours. Food distribution centers will be empty within a day. Without additional supplies coming in the riots will begin almost immeadiately.
    Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?
    According to the think tank that explored this possibility, at best 10% of Americans are alive one year later! Worldwide perhaps 15% of human survive, primarily because third world countries still live on farms.
    There is an interesting e-book out The Death of Civilization; The Apocalypse Begins by Nathan Hale that chronicles this, as well as the ensuing war. It‘s a good read and what’s really scary is that most of the authors predictions and pre-conditions have already happened.

      I can only tolerate a few minutes of Beck. He has a habit of repeating himself constantly and it drives me crazy. Like the commercials on TV where the address and phone and email information is right in view but they repeat it three or four times, I have counted five too.

    I also enjoy our history Glenn..But when your dealing with people who want to change our history..(lie)..Im thinking this isnt going to matter to them..our government has been compromised with leftist non God fearing communist…This is more about the caliphate and religion rather than history…They probably know our history very well…thats why they are choosing to do the exact oppisite of what history tells us should be done….

    We need to learn from our history with those that believe in Shariah/Islamic law. If you would like to read a letter that explains two of our Founding Fathers dealings with barbarians called the Barbary Pirates go online and type into your search engine “John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Grosvenor Square, 28 March 1786” an d it will bring you to a letter they sent to John Jay, the United States Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Continental Congress concerning their conversation with the Tripoli ambassador.
    As you read the letter keep asking yourself if you see any similarities between 1786 and today’s challenges. Here is a part of the 1786 letter from Adams and Jefferson:

    The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every musselman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

    I suggest you read the entire letter, ask yourself some questions about what happened then and what is happening now. Are we experiencing the development of a worldwide Caliphate mentioned by the Tripoli ambassador?

    What does the Muslim Brotherhood have in common with the Tripoli Ambassador? Why hasn’t our government placed the Muslim Brotherhood on the terrorist list? Wake up folks

    I liked it but the opening monologue of the show was quiet funny!

    He played a mock communist commentator going through Beck’s usual news items. I recommend it. I think they might have it posted on glennbeck.com if you don’t have gbtv.

      Soviets in Afgahnisatn, British in Afgahnistan(twice), Russians in Afgahnistan, Timurids, Mongols, and Alexander the Great, all invaded Afgahnistan, but none could keep it. Actually invading Afghanistan led to all of those empires collapsing. The question is how do we dimantle the American Empire? History gives many lessons on those empires that willingly dismantle (Britain) or those that collapse unwillingly (Soviets, Romans, Persians, etc.)

      I just because one does not subscribe to Ron Paul as the US president they are not make one a fake-conservative/libertarian.

      I consider myself a Libertarian on just about every issue but I an not a 100% Ron Paul guy. So I am a fake libertarian?

      I agree with everything including drugs, that our foreign policy is a mess (left & right), flat tax, auditing and ending the FED etc etc.

      All you ever do is attack the people closes to our movement. How does that help us? How do we move forward without allies/friends?

      All of the thing I mentioned above Beck has voiced that he agrees with and also supports candidates who who supports those issues. Just not Ron Paul for president. He supports Rand Paul etc.

      You do more damage then Glenn does. If you are the truth and others are the lie than go start your own pod cast or radio show, tv show, write books and stage events. See how many will follow your doctrine negativity anti-body.

      I’ve seen you clam Christianity in the past, so remember everybody will and can not be perfect. Like Jesus don’t go out to tear down other but rather to build your message, not by how wrong other are but by how right you message is.

      This comment I agree with. But you are not practicing the first part though. You can not pick and chose Christ teaching and justify it and that goes for all parties involved.

      RealEnrico, Brother Smith is zealous in his beliefs, as am I. I was a huge fan of Glenn Beck, when he talked about the Founding Fathers, and how we needed a candidate that fit their mold to the point my wife thought I was obsessed, however, …Glenn turned his back on Ron Paul, who he praised just a mere year ago, for what? For his belief of some debt we have to Israel? He believes that we need to protect Israel? He dismisses Benjamin Netanyahu pleas for the U.S. to let them be sovereign and make their own decisions?
      He backed Santorum, who despises Libertarians. He backed Santorum, the guy that voted liberal on many things in the past, believed that government should direct what you should or should not do in your bedroom?
      Glenn, the biggest opponent to Progressivism, now backs Romney, the Progressive candidate for POTUS? Backs the candidate that will lose to Obama? I cancelled my GBTV two months in. Sometimes he says the right things, but now I do not believe him whole heartedly. I believe this country is in big big trouble, and I believe that our economy is going to crash and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it at this point. If ever in history we need a POTUS and Congressmen that take their oath to protect the Constitution, seriously. Romney has already shown in the past that he will not. Ron Paul has shown he will. What we do this election is going to have ramifications to our children and grandchildren. Do we want to kick the can down the road to them?

      @West Coast Patriot You make a much reasonable argument that I mostly agree with. He did or does not need to throw people/Ron Paul under the bus to promote another candidate. I agree 100% on Rick the liberty basher.

      I believe and think like Rand Paul all issues he would my ideal president. The only problem that I have with Ron(which is the same that Glenn has)is he is too neutral on foreign affairs in term of people who wish our destruction. I’m not talking about meddling but influencing.

      Check out Rand Paul’s budget plain, it was the best I have seen to date. I agree that we doing to much around the world meddling, nation building, unconstitutional wars, waste of aid tax money, being a world police etc but at the same time I don’t agree with Ron foreign policy and believe it would pose a immediate threat on our national security.

      I agree that our nation is will actually collapse. I too fear for children, grandchildren and even my future in the likeness of our collapse, which how close I believe it might be becoming. Any major attack on us of any kind will also send us over at this stage.

      Some of thing that Paul says and doesn’t say is also troublesome like 9/11 truther comment that he shared with that lady.

      I don‘t agree with Glenn on everything but I don’t believe he is the or a enemy. If thing are so dire then again why attack one of the only mainstream voices preaches almost all/every single issue & candidates. Allot Ron people found/find the truth o

      Like you said Beck is one of the only people who not only defends Ron Paul but also give him much praise. Glenn is just not 100% in with him and voice his disagreements and why. I do agree that Beck might go to far at some instances.

      He is not perfect but still actually one of the good guys. My point to Brother Winston is not anti Ron Paul but is not to be anti everyone who is not 100% Ron Paul. Its does not help his your own movement, most on his can not stand you’ll who do this. You can never change one’s heart on any of these issues this way. All that people see you as being anti everything.

      Just about everything in you last post is not honest. You jumped right around every bit of context of my questions. You are attempting to twist my word to say/what I didn’t. You not answer even one of my questions in the context that I asked them.

      Beck did not twist her word or trick her into believing conspiracies. She was not some hit-job.       I honestly believe out of the whole original field of candidates that Ron Paul if nominated would win by largest amount and with you most ease.
