History Revisited: Nazi ‘Gustav’ Was Largest Gun of All Time

History Revisited: Nazi Gustav Was Largest Gun of All Time

A story from the blogosphere takes us back in time to Nazi Germany to learn about the largest gun ever built: “The Gustav.”

The story goes that back in 1939, Adolf Hitler needed to figure out how to infiltrate the French Maginot line, a highly fortified 930-plus mile long defensive wall along the French-German and French-Italian borders.

To achieve his goal, Hitler planned to simply obliterate the wall completely, hence the need for a “big” gun. He recruited one Friedrich Krupp to engineer a weapon capable of deploying enough ordinance to level the wall.  By 1941, the Krupp company produced the largest gun of all time, the “Gustav Gun.”

History Revisited: Nazi Gustav Was Largest Gun of All Time

Ironically, after the gun was produced, Hitler realized he could just circumvent the Maginot via Belgium.

But why let such a monstrosity go to waste? And it wouldn’t — not with the Nazis in charge anyway.

Hitler got his sinister wish and Gustav was eventually put to the test, but only twice. Once during the Siege of Sevastopol and once during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Thankfully, however, the gun was then allegedly captured by Allied troops and cannibalized for scrap.

The Gustav reportedly weighed a whopping 1344 tons and stood 4-stories high. Apparently, it was so heavy it had to be disassembled and attached to rail cars in order to be transported.

Oh, and did we mention it took a 500 man crew, including a two-star general to operate?

Gizmodo brings us the specs:

The Gustav had a bore diameter of 800 mm (just under a yard) and used 3000 pounds, more than a ton, of smokeless powder charge to fire its two primary shell types: a 10,584 lb. high explosive (HE) shell and a 16,540 lb. concrete-piercing shell—roughly the weight of an unladen 71-passenger school bus, travelling at 2700ft/s.

With a maximum elevation of 48 degrees, the HE shell could hit a target 29 miles away, while the bunker-buster could nail anything within 23 miles—both with reasonable accuracy. The Gustav could basically fire a shell over the widest point of Long Island, NY and hit nothing but water. If it did hit, the HE would leave a 30-foot deep crater while the piercing round could penetrate as much as 264 feet of reinforced concrete (or height of the Seattle Exchange Building).

History Revisited: Nazi Gustav Was Largest Gun of All Time

Apparently, Gustav even had a 7 million Deutsch Mark sister named Dora that was reportedly destroyed by the Germans themselves lest it fall into the hands of Russians.

They were capable of dreaming and engineering anything. If only those powers had been used for good.

The Gustav wasn’t be biggest ever designed. Dr. Bull sold a couple of 1000 mm, and a 350 mm to Saddam, though they were never to the point of being operational. If they had performed to design specs, they could lob a shell over 1000 km, and with the right projectile containing rocket boosters, it was designed to put payloads into orbit.

Unfortunately, for the gun, it was never placed into service. Dr. Bull came to a bad end at the hands of the Mossad, though he had received ample warning to cease and desist in his pro-Iraqi sales effort.

Though Bull’s superguns never made first string, I conjecture that we haven’t seen the last of their family.

Long range artillery is still with us (but without 1000 km ranges). These days the US is working with GPS guided projectiles that have very, very impressive accuracy, and for many applications accuracy counts for more than size.

While I do not disagree that killing is abhorrent… that is a far too general statement.

I sure hope you understand that there will ALWAYS be Evil in the world. ALWAYS. For we are sinners… the fallen.. man always has a taste for power and there will always be some nation that will stir up the evil of this world.

Until we are faced with Judgement and enter His gates.. Good men will always have to defend the life and liberty of innocent people… sometimes that involves killing those that would like to kill you.

A gun that loud when fired would create a ear shattering boom. Anyone nearby that thing when it goes off would probably experiance temporary if not permanent ear damage. Imagine shooting a gun right next to your ear. Now imagine a gun 500x that size shooting next to your ear….

For crying out loud, if you left your front door and windows open and posted a big sign on the lawn that read, “Free Food, Shelter, Cable TV, and College: If You Can Sneak In You Can Stay,” it wouldn’t surprise you when your house was full of strangers. Do not bite on the racist bait. That is what people like him/her crave. It slakes their thirst just as sure as a glass of ice water on a hot day. Nobody alive today in America is responsible for slavery or ever owned another human being. We are not responsible for what another generation did. It is already known that TheBlaze is Beck’s site and he is a ardent supporter of original history but this article written by one of his employees displays revisionism. The Nazis and Japanese were defeated in large part due to Britain’s station of Sikh soldiers in France and Italy.
“As the allied nations stepped closer to the second global conflict, this time with the Imperial Japanese and the Germans, Sikh soldiers once again stepped forward and became the back bone of the British Indian Army.
With only voluntary recruitment into the army, young Sikh men helped to swell the Indian army from 189,000 at the start of the war to over 2.5 million at the end of the war.”
Just like World War I, Sikh regiments have contributed to the allies in overcoming the forces of Germany and Japan. But again, these accomplishments are not noticed in history.

some things never change. The reason the germans didn’t make more of these guns was that they were TOO big. Why build a gun so big it’s a pain in the butt to more, the enemy will see it coming a hundred miles off and it takes so long to set it up, we can mount an invasion before they finish. I’m surprised the navy messed with another big gun, the battle ships were cool and all but a few hits with sea born missiles from so far away the big guns can’t shoot back will sink them.
These things are like the Maginot Line, a waste of time and money.

You both need to look at the clip. The rail gun I saw wasn’t terribly big. The warhead was small enough one men fed it into the breach by hand. It was unclear how much penetration it got on the sandbags — they didn’t show any digging out, so maybe that much is still classified. But ti was one nice clean puncture a few inched across.

C’mon, ya think an old-fashioned Navy five inchers wouldn’t have made a bigger dent? And a real battleship 16″er? Oh my!

Totally right. Ms. Gabbay, author, did not research very well. The 3rd and 4th pix are of rail guns on railroad cars and were much smaller than Gustav, which required specially laid tracks (see first pix) to be transported to the firing site. It required many days to dissassemble for transport by ordinary rail or ship.

The very nature of politicians may be measured in the central portion of 20th century. Had he saved the .8 million German army soldiers wasted on the Eastern front, WW2 may have turned out slightly different the total ‘Unconditional Surrender’. Stalin was not much better at being a General.

Once Russia was subdued, then gone after France and England. No doubt Russia was his downfall but, if he had taken it first, he had all the oil and natural resources he needed and plenty of slave labor to build arms. The flaw in your scenario is that to get to the Soviets, Hitler until 1939 had to go through Poland, which was allied with France and (more to the point) rather impetuously “guaranteed” against German attack by Britain. He tried unsuccessfully to deter the western Allies with the Nazi-Soviet Pact, the price of which was partition of Poland with Stalin. Of course, he never intended to keep to the Pact any longer than he had to, and almost as soon as France fell, and even before the Battle of Britain was well joined, he was wistfully looking east. Had he had his way, he might have invaded the USSR late in 1940, but was persuaded to put if off for six months.

      Hey GONZO,

That was the plan! It all fell apart when Poland didn’t want to have an anticommunist alliance with the NAZI government (Poland was both antiGerman and anticommunist) and when Chamberlain gave Poland a war guaranty over Danzig.

During Muinch/dismemberment of Czecho-Slovakia, Poland participated in the cannibalization of that state and Hitler gave the Poles Teschen in order to butter them up before they would deal with the last disputed territory of Danzig and the Polish Corridor (Poles were making a pact with the Devil [LOL] but in the end it didn’t hold).

After Munich when German military mobilized, Neville Chamberlain felt betrayed over Munich and changed his stance for political reasons and offered Poland a war guaranty, even though there was no way they could’ve saved the Poles without an alliance with the Soviets.

So Hitler and Stalin made a pact (now Stalin made a pact with the Devil; LOL) over the destruction of Poland which dragged Britain and France into the war because of a war guaranty. Britain didn’t give Poland a war guaranty if the Soviets attacked them. The Hitler Stalin pact allowed the Germans to fight on one front, thus an easy victory over France; LOL!

If Poland would‘ve cut a deal over Danzig and the French and British didn’t declare war on Germany, Hitler would’ve attacked the Soviets.

I wonder if France had mobilized during the German militarization of the Rhineland, would we all be speaking Russian!

Excellent points, Whiz! It’ my understand that Poland was the only one of the countries involved in the 1939 crisis where there was real popular enthusiasm for war. The German people were apathetic, the French dreaded war, the British hoped their guarantee would deter Hitler instead of provoking him. In Warsaw they were shouting “On to Berlin!”

I’m part American Indian….the Indians were brutal. I have Blackfoot and Osage in me, and they (as I understand it, and have been told) were bitter enemies. White men are not the only ones who kill. It’s human nature and goes back to Cain and Able.

That‘s the white man’s religion, Guns(and lies)…Never conquered lands(or hearts and minds) with knowledge, love, or numbers. Only by the invention of the gun has the most destructive and deceptive breed of man gained dominance. That is what you people should be praying to.
      >>
Is “to” a typo? who should I be praying to,, or did you mean “too”?.. Either way, why do you feel the need to be telling “you people” to be praying too or to anyway??

White man speak with forked tongue. Well so did Red Man. He played the “Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend” game and lost horribly. They were murdering each other long before the Europeans showed up, and thought they had themselves a powerfull alley to destroy their enemies with. Turns out they were absolutley right.

If you are speaking of the White Man’s lies in terms of the African Slave Trade, well sorry to burst your bubble, but that was spun up by the Africans & Arabs. The “White Man” was the Johnny come lately (by something like 5000 years) to that bit of happy history. Which is ironic because it was the “White Man” who put and end to it in the free world and oh wait for it…..the Africans and Arabs who are still active in the slave trade to this day.

So who is the one spreading the lies then? I’ll give you a guess and a hint (look in the mirror).

Are you talking about the friendly Indian cannibals that lived in upper NY State region? They used to store the bodies of their captives deep under cold water streams to preserve them for future meals.

really? Only white men kill? So tell me, for the thousands of years before white men came here, how did the indians get territory? Though negoiations? I don’t think so. They warred upon each other, conquured land and people and took slaves and prisoners to be torured and killed. Some tribes names actually mean “enemy” (Souix) but they cleaned that up in history. Ever hear of the Erie indians? It was a tribe in upstate New York, under the Iriquois confederation that caused a problem within the confederation and was wiped out completely….by the confederation. Remeber the last of the Mohigans? It was the last of them because the confederation member, the Mohawk, had a problem with them. So they were told to leave the area or face death, so they moved to the west side of lake michigan and intermarried with the tribes there, last of the mohigans, and not by the white mans’ hand.
Learn real history not just movie crap and you will see “native Americans” ain’t what most are lead to beleave. Did we kill indians? YES but we didn‘t do anything they hadn’t done, we were just better equiped to do it. And you can blame the government for the condistions they live under now to. And were DOES all that casino money go to any way????

Are you on dope? You need to go back to school and read a history book. Oh, I forgot. You must be one of those new generation Y types who has been separated from history and reality by revisionism. You’ve had your political common sense replaced by rainbow/gliiter stupidity. And youRe probably one of those people who can’t even find your own state on a map.

I’m well-educated and if you read the paragraph you would notice that I put a spotlight on GUNS. Ever since they came on the scene, the white man has used it to steal not only from their neighbors, but anywhere they landed. Without guns, they would still be starving in Europe. Last I checked,Indians had bow and arrows before the white man showed up.That’s real His-story.

He only decided to attack the Allies in the center when he learned that they probably had intel about his original plan, which was to concentrate in the north. The “sickle stroke” assault through the Ardennes and Sedan only worked because the British and French played right into his hands by moving the mobile half of their forces north into Belgium. His armored spearheads broke through behind them, cutting them off from any possibility of reinforcement or supply.

The article says the gun was ready in 1941, and then Hitler discovered he could go around the Maginot Line. Problem: the invasion of France and the Lowlands began on May 10, 1940. France was conquered (including all of the Maginot Line) withing 6 weeks.
