History Revisited: Skull Found at Pearl Harbor, May Have Belonged to Japanese Pilot

Skull Found at Pearl Harbor, Could Have Belonged to Japanese Pilot

(The Blaze/AP) An excavation crew recently made a startling discovery at the bottom of Pearl Harbor when it unearthed a skull that archeologists suspect is from a Japanese pilot who died in the historic attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

Archaeologist Jeff Fong of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific described the discovery to The Associated Press and the efforts under way to identify the skull….

The author Kurt Vonegut said that WW II was the worst thing that could happen to the American people because the enemies we fought really WERE monsters. In Western civilization, wars were typically two kings who were cousins having a disagreement, and sending their knights out to chop up the rival king’s peasant infantry. They always demonized the enemy, but almost always nobody really had the high ground, morally. In WW I the German soldiers had belts with the message, “Gott Mit Uns” (God With Us), while the Belgians and French had cartoons showing German soldiers eating French babies.

WW II was different. Hitler put Jews into ovens and Japanese soldiers in the Rape on Nanking threw Chineese babies up into the air and caught them on their bayonets.

That experience conditioned a whole generation of Americans to believe that our government was always right and always did the right thing. When we have smart and moral people running our government, that’s largely true. Unfortunately, we don’t always elect that kind of people. Our founding fathers knew that government is a dangerous beast that will eat you alive if you don’t keep it on a tight leash.

As bad as the truly evil people who make it into government are, they are really so few as to usually not be that big of a problem. There are many, many more who just aren’t very bright. After all, all it takes is a good speechwriter, a slick tounge and lots of money to get elected. Take a good look at Washington.

It may surprise you to know that we gave military funerals, with honors to some of the Japanese pilots who died in the attack. There is a famous photo at Kaneohe Base of one of the burials. There is also a story of a Kamakazi attack on the USS Missouri where the pilot’s body ended up on the deck. The Missouri Captain ordered him to be buried at sea, again with military honors. When it comes to Honor in Battle, the American soldier/sailor/Marine makes me proud, again and again.

It was war – and a long time ago. Send the skull home. During the Pacific war, both sides were extremely brutal as they had to be. Read “With the Old Breed” by Sledge to understand how the troops prevailed. One thing the US Marines and the Japanese solders shared was neither side tended to take prisoners for it was a fight to the finish.

As a retired soldier I say send the poor pilots bones home, that is what I at least would want if I had died fighting overseas. Remember soldiers are stuck fighting the wars while the politicians (be it military politicians or civilian ones) stay clear in the rear.

LOL, You’re as bad as me! I went on the tour of the Arizona memorial with a bunch of them laughing and yucking it up. I reminded them they were on a burial site and that I would show respect if I went to the Hiroshima or Nagasaki memorial. They all acted like they didn’t understand but, they shut up. They knew what I was saying.

Glad they found this reminder of one of the darkess days in our history. Lest we forget this kind of dire event could happen again. 9/11 was a sneak attack by Islamic extremists and actually killed more people in the attack then died at Pearl Harbor. “The price of freedom is external vigilance”.Don’t be lulled by any BS from the Government.

I have been lucky enough to been invited to dive on the USS Arizona before which is very rare so have a very emotional connection with Pearl Harbor gives me chicken skin just thinking about it !

I do have a great photo of a Japanese soldier skull that I took you can see the side of his face was shot this was from South Pacific ship wrecks some 20 years ago no emotions toward it ? just a great shot diving on the sunk Japanese wrecks but great emotion to have dove history and glad we came out on top ! so have been in the position to have handled a Japanese skull and bones but no emotion I feel the same for the found skull ? Identify it and send it back if they want it ?

Yes they were brutal horrible soldiers for the most part but also brain washed by a gov and told lies about the enemy etc… ? so sadly I feel more sorry for them more than anything that a nation can become so brain washed and makes me HOPE this nation with some of the stuff I see does not rely so much on the gov and what they say etc.. lucky most found out the truth lets hope we can keep this nation from falling into that path !!! scary how they just fell into line and did what they were told and believed what they were told without ever questioning any of it !!!!

I can not stand what they did ! but its history lets learn from it not repeat it

I agree….they were more lied to than just against us. That’s how you get a whole nation behind you, lie to them. Isn’t that what our current president is trying to do?

      Hmmm…

      Since it is already unearthed…

I have mixed thoughts on this.

Offer to give it back seems the moral thing to do.
Prohibit further diving/excavation also seems the moral thing to do.

However, offering to return it COULD set off an international issue where they may demand complete excavation of Pearl Harbor and ALL remains identified/returned.

I‘m just not sure that is a can of worms I’d open.

War has strange effects on people. Some good, some bad. What is past, is past. Our society has the belief that forgiving is right. The people of Japan are our allies now and really the time has come to forgive the past. We should never forget, but that was a different time. Honor that pilot for he gave his life for what he believed was the truth, just as our brave soldiers are giving their lives for today. We just pray that these lives are being lost for freedom rather than capitalistic greed.

And because Americans are such great people unlike most of the rest of the world, we will honor this pilot and lovingly return the remains to the family. I was just thinking recently after the devastating earthquake in Japan and the reaction of the people how amazingly different the people were from the war time era. Of course it was the leaders who were crazy then but I thought about the effect we as Americans had on their culture when we helped them rebuild. They are amazing people and it shows when you reach out in love vs hatred what a lasting effect you can have. It is a shame the Muslims don’t get it. They will live like animals as long as the put hatred first!

Welcome to the Islamic world of sharia. These people are animals with an evil ideology. The Japanese are inherently good people. They were monsters back in those days (please don‘t jump to any PC attacks on that statement until you’ve read “Under the Samurai Sword” by Cal Graham thank you) but they are not inherently evil like the Muslims are.

      You must know history!

Talking with my sister in Japan, she told me that the Japanese don’t recognize Pearly Harbor, may have no clue many don’t want to admit it that their country could do something like that. That was a regime in Japanese History run by the military and the Japanese are ashamed.

Much like some German when they speak of Hitler, they too are very ashamed.

I just wish that the African American community would also be ashamed of the Genocide that they are doing to their own unborn. Yes it is the number one killer of blacks in America. Here is a video I found that explains that: http://url2it.com/gaki

You have to remember, soldiers don’t start wars, they just fight in them as ordered too. The one’s who usually start the wars, aren‘t the one’s who are on the front lines.

I have a hard time giving any respect to Japanese from that era. They were a brutal and rutheless people who took pleasure killing innocent people. They were no better than the Nazis, probably worse. Do some digging on Unit 731. Do a google image search on the Rape Of Nanking. Read up on Bataan. If that is a Japanese skull, put it in a museum as a reminder of what they were.

When you do, certainly go see the Arizona memorial, it’s very moving, particularly from seeing the last of the Greatest Generation making their final journey to pay tribute to fallen comrades.

But definitely go see a place that most people never heard of or go see…the Punchbowl National Cemetary. A beautiful place that rivals Arlington National Cemetary in solitude and reverence.
