Hockey Fight: John Scott vs. Kevin Westgarth (With Slo-Mo)

Your hockey fight of the moment comes from Saturday’s contest between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Los Angeles Kings.  The Kings were beaten and so was their enforcer Kevin Westgarth.  The Blackhawks John Scott is the other contender here.

    Take a game that could be interesting and take out all the sportsmanship, you have hockey. I’ve always hated it and always will. Now, go ahead and call me an idiot or ignorant because I don’t understand the game. Is possible to play this game without the hate, aggression and violence?

      CAPTQUEST: I have no problem with you hating hockey … personally … I hate soccer … but I don’t denigrate those who do like the sport. And, personally, I take no offense from your analysis … from your perspective you are absolutely right. But it is YOUR perspective … I can respect that.

      I may have denigrated the sport itself, because I think it seems to advocate unsportsmanlike behavior. But, I certainly do not mean to denigrate the fans of hockey. I’m not necessarily opposed to a degree of violence in a sport either. When a skier pushes his limits and wipes out, or when a race car loses control and crashes, I can appreciate the risks being taken to excel in one’s capabilities and skills. But, the hostility and rage on other players is what turns me off. Actually I think the game would be interesting if more self discipline were required like in other sports.

      …and if I may elaborate a little more on my point; Even pro wrestling I can understand because I know they are acting and it’s all a show for the audience. I can appreciate the art of it if you will.
      but when players are trying to break another players teeth or nose and intentionally inflict injury, it goes against the way I was taught to play games. That is my perspective and with all due respect to the fans as well.

      If I may, another comment addressed the fighting element in hockey…..it is an intense game and there is actually much strategy in many of the fights. They are mutually agreed upon by both parties and a violent dance ensues that possibly changes the momentum of the entire game.
      The spur of the moment fights occur when a player takes a cheap shot at the best player from the other team. It is defending your star as happens in every other sport….like Jeter getting drilled in the head or LeBron flung to the floor …or last week when Ben Roethlisberger got punched in the mouth….others step up to protect the star…..but in hockey, there is the potential for the star to be abused on every shift.

      I appreciate your attempt to explain it WHYBOTHER, maybe I just don’t really understand the game and have the wrong impression of it. I should discuss it with one of my buddies that is a hard core Lightning fan, although I don’t think they are doing to well this year.

    Hocky would be a good game if there were real penalties for this type of crap. When a referee of any sport just stands there and enjoys the fight then that is when they need to be replaced. If players want to fight they should be boxers. I say ban these players who fight for 5 games and dock their pay. If they do it again then ban them for life.

    Both idiots should be brought up on asault charges and banned from professional sports. Regular folks on the street could not engagae in such behavior, so why is it OK for brain-damaged hockey players? And the moron with the cell phone… dysfunctional.

    And we wonder why America is in a toilet bowl death spiral. Sad. Just plain sad.

      THEDHNDRSN … I beg to differ, America is in a “toilet bowl death spiral” because people LIKE YOU (notice I say “like” because you personally may not be completely ignorant although your post makes a good show of it) can’t do simple math. So far there are FIVE COMMENTS condemning this item. Count them: FIVE! You state that you agree with MOST POSTERS … if that is really the case, then you would agree with the MAJORITY OF US who say keep your NANNY STATE out of our sports!

      If you had actually READ the posts, maybe you would come to a greater understanding of the sport other than the simple “AGNES KRAVITZ” knee-jerk response we come to expect from people who spend their time judging the actions and thoughts of others irregardless of any actual understanding of the issue.

    Look I like to watch the occasional UFC fight, or boxing match but why is hockey the only non-fighting sport that allows that crap to occur? Football, baseball, basketball….none of them would even remotely come close to allowing a fight like that to continue.

    Maybe it is because the sport is so damn boring that you need a fight now and then to sell tickets.

      you are obviously one of the above mentioned “watchers”…being from the south, you have little concept of the skill required to partake in ice hockey as there are few indoor rinks and certainly no frozen=over ponds…..HOWEVER….try going to a game, or even visiting your local rink before espousing stupidity.
      Boring is certainly NOT an attribute of hockey. Unless 100+mph shots, 25+mph figures blazing up and down the rink slamming into each other, the impact of which rattles the entire structure is boring.
      Just another brain washed boob spoonfed the lib talking points from the local news rag.
      Good for you…nothing like an informed judgment.

    The “liberalization” of sports is part of our cultural problem.
    Throw a pitch inside and get suspended…..tackle too hard and get fined AND suspended…..drop the gloves and hear cries of jail and suspensions….flagrant foul and get suspended…..
    How about we dispose of the “participation trophies” and start to teach our kids that they won’t be good at everything nor should they. Find your talents and pursue those things that bring you joy…noone “owes” anything to anyone! If you get hurt playing a game for millions of dollars, or playing as a child….too bad! Dont want a fat lip or a bruise then stay inside and play your vidiot games or watch others play on the “boob-tube” But for those that dont mind a bump, bruise or ANY consequence to the pursuit of physical lives, leave us they hell ALONE!

    Hopefully Goodell won’t take over hockey. Some may not like it, but this is one of the reasons people watch hockey, just like watching NASCAR – for the accidents.

    The warrior spirit in it’s last true form. Cut my hair off, that was one of the reasons. I‘m not a very good fighter and didn’t need to be handicapped by hair.       Hey Lion..it‘s not as great as it was in the 60s and 70s when I’d go see the Blackhawks and there were no helmets PLUS there were bench clearing brawls. After Gretzky…they wussified it. IMHO

      I remember Hockey when they didn’t wear helmets, ant the goalies also had no helmets. All the player had no teeth, and when they got wacked with a puck whizzing 100mph into their face. They would get stitched up on the bench and go back on the ice. It was crazy and nobody complained. Today we are such babies and politically correct that this little brawl make headlines. Men now are so feminized !

    I love the tap-out at 0:38. When Scott rocks Westgarth at 0:34, Scott knows the fight is done and has no intention of throwing another punch. The tap-out confirms the end of the fight. Hockey fights are rarely about anger – they’re about sending signals and energizing your team. When either player has had enough, it’s over.

    Hahahaha, brute violence. No one does a fight like hockey players, it is as much of the game and the game. I didn’t understand it for a long time, not sure I do now. But it is a reality and apart of the game and something to watch some of the time.

    GALT70: It’s a part of the game. Notice the tap at the end of the fight … that means he’s had enough and LO AND BEHOLD the guy stops pounding him. I‘m not saying it’s NOT violent … but it sure has more honor than a bunch of black Friday shoppers waiting in line for flat screen TV’s. If the guy doesn’t want to fight, he simply has to say he doesn’t want to fight (believe it or not, the players tell each other ahead of time they’re going to have a “go”) … or simply fall to the ice and it’s over.

    Have faith, GALT70, the low life’s like us who enjoy Hockey and Football are the same dregs of society that will save your ass when the revolution comes!

      I agree with you. What I don’t understand is why the refs let a fight go on like that between a bleeding guy with no helmet and a unhurt guy with a helmet. Anything goes with professional sports these days as long as they’re bringing in lots of money.

      I don’t think that IS the point. I think it‘s you that doesn’t get it. When does an interest in politics or crochet compare to mindless gore and violence? What happens at Hockey and Football, etc. games does not affect my life in any way other than the economic politics of raising my cable rates to pay for sports channels. This site is not the sports pages and this story is not about sports per sé. For all you sports fans out there (and I’m definitely not belittling you), how would you like it if they made you muck around a bunch of cooking articles in the sports section with the box scores? If the violence is what you are after, where do you draw the line anyway??? If that fight had happened OUTSIDE the arena, somebody would be looking at serious jail time… so it’s OK if you have skates or a football helmet on?

      Zaphod….that is EXACTLY the poiint! Thank you….i read many articles on many “political” sites and many comments….the only consistency is the variety of viewpoints.
      America actually stands for embracing the diversity of thought….even amongst those that believe they think alike.

      The nuances between viewpoints are as infinite as the people that eschew them. Everyone should be allowed to enjoy what they like, where they like, when they like and how they like WITHOUT ANY JUDGMENT from any other.

      There is no time when your opinion (generalized) is more or less important than mine.

    GO HAWKS!!! I’m an old Chicagoland resident who voted with his feet after Obama took office. The only thing pure about that city nowadays are the sports teams. For the record, Obama didn’t land in Chicago, Chicago politics landed on him. Of course he was a socialist hack beforehand.

Cubs fans are more…white collar poppin frat dudes/sorority chicks looking to get drunk at a baseball field, because its trendy.       @ MAULEMALL: He definitely got the raw end of that fight, but you take a look at the end of the fight when Westgarth had enough and “tapped out”. The fight was over, Scott stopped and Westgarth patted him on the shoulder as he skated away bleeding, almost like saying “No hard feelings friend”.
      They could have sat down and had a beer together after the game and been best of buds.
      Barbaric? Perhaps, but true sportsmen nonetheless.
