Hold on to Your Holy Books! It’s International Blasphemy Rights Day!

Cover your ears and cling tightly to your Bible/Koran/Book of Mormon/Bhagavad Gita/Talmud because today, September 30, is International Blasphemy Rights Day. The festivities are afoot mostly on college campuses:

Born in 2009, the growing worldwide movement commemorates the publishing date of the controversial Muhammad cartoons depicted in the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, in 2005.
International Blasphemy Rights Day
You may recall that reaction to the cartoons was varied and widespread. First, Danish Muslim groups held public protests against the cartoons. Then they were reprinted in many publications in more than 50 countries. This led to violent demonstrations throughout the Muslim world.

International Blasphemy Rights Day
Some protestors were fired upon, leading to more than 100 deaths, and soon there were attacks against Danish embassies in Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran. Then many Western groups responded with various "Buy Danish" campaigns in support of free expression.
International Blasphemy Rights Day

The goal of today's International Blasphemy Rights Day is "to support free speech, support the right to criticize and satirize religion, and to oppose any resolutions or laws, binding or otherwise, that discourage or inhibit free speech of any kind. The focus on 'blasphemy' is simply because it is such a salient issue, and one for which a lot of consciousness-raising is necessary," according to the Center for Inquiry on Campus, which spearheads the event.

Students at the University of Illinois are planning to celebrate on the campus quad:

So, what will we be doing on the Quad? Are we looking for trouble or seeking to convert others to the secular persuasion? Far from it! We’ll be out enjoying the same fundamental right our religious counterparts practice in the same location almost daily … the right to free speech!

Illini Secular Student Alliance members will be inviting passersby to add their own blasphemous ideas to our “Wall of Blasphemy” poster and to sell their souls for tasty, tasty cookies. Our goal is not only to raise awareness about nonbelief and nonbelievers on campus, but to illustrate the importance of First Amendment rights, no matter the topic of one’s speech.

The Agnostic & Atheist Student Association at the University of California Davis is raising money with a Blasphemous Bake Sale, which includes (of course) devil's food cake and other treats.

International Blasphemy Rights Day

At the University of British Columbia, the Freethinkers student group is providing folks with paper and markers "so that you can draw all the blasphemous images you want!"

Happy Friday, everybody.

Funny how people point at our “young generation” as being a problem. Sounds like the exact same that happens with EVERY young generation. They are always “juvenile delinquents” or “troublemakers”. This eras youth are no more trouble than the past. It’s just happening now and makes the news on multiple platforms.

Your high profile with a statement like this keeps you irrelevant… but anonymous – not so much: you are known by the very nature of your irreverent quip. We as Christians have only one moral imperative as to speech in that we steadfastly reject blaspheming the Holy Spirit of God as it is the one and only sin cited that leads to spiritual death.
Good luck in avoidance of that death warrant throughout your lifetime.

I feel the exact same about Mormonism, actually. The song from the Broadway hit “Book of Mormon” puts it quite well in their song “I Believe”:

“I believe that ancient Jews built boats and sailed to America,”
“I believe that god has a plan for me, and that plan includes me getting my own planet,”
“I believe that the head of Mormon Church, Thomas Monson speaks directly to God,”
“I believe that in 1978, God changed his mind about black people,”
“I believe that God lives on a planet called Kolob,” (technically He lives on a planet near Kolob)
I believe that Jesus has his own planet,”
“I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri”

Sure, none of it is the ultimate message of Mormonism, but it’s in the teachings. Christianity (real Christianity, not off-shoots like Mormonism) have a lot of beliefs like this too. Is it blasphemy to say how silly they sound? Sure. But technically none of it’s false; you just aren’t adopting the specific guise that that religion requires to make it sound good.

I think a little blasphemy is fine if it’s all in good fun. Also, highly recommend the Book of Mormon. Er, the musical, not the religious book.

However, you’ll be the one who will reap the eternal consequences. God’s a big boy. I’m sure He can take care of himself just fine. He has an eternal and perfect memory. His justice is righteous. Hold on! I talked to God last night and he assured me He don’t blame people who blaspheme today. We don’t live in North Korea, after all. There God has a bad haircut and no sense of humor like the God of the Old Testament. Our new gentle God moves about in mysterious, carbon neutral ways. The old God had the mouth and jagged teeth of an alligator, you could try to open it but it is impossible. Today our God is chatty and casual and feels moist and good like a Utilitarian Universalist church crowd.

Careful now! Every idle word will be brought into account and will be judged! The good news is if a person repents and asks God for forgiveness, those will be blotted out. I marvel that so called institutions of higher learning aka colleges and universities have become so far removed from the Truth that if It hit most of the students in the head, they would have no idea what had happened to them. The word ‘logic’ is a greek derived word from logos, word which of course is biblically speaking the Logos. Make the connections. A ‘classic’ education (mostly no longer available) was in depth study of Latin and Greek, which of course included the Latin Vulgate and Koine Greek scriptures. Sadly most colleges and universities if they hold the Word at all do so in contempt; the Word will hold them all into account someday!

One believer‘s truth is another believer’s blasphemy. As so many Blazers in here are proving, if anybody makes any statement that contradicts the believer’s dogma, then that person has blasphemed, regardless of whether or not the blasphemer is, or was, or was recently, a fellow believer.

The idea that Religionists do not view the truths spoken by Atheists to be blaspheming the Religionists’ own religions is ridiculous, and so here, I do ridicule it.

Your attempts might be the intellectual equivalent of the verbal diarrhea of a 4 year old, but it would not be blasphemy, and it would not insult me personally in any way, unless, or course, it was an ad hominem attack upon my person, but as that would be in contravention of The Blaze posting rules and could get your account yanked. Hey Lesb you are aware that Atheism is a religion, right? Religion is not just believing in a higher power or god-type entity it is a system of beliefs or ideology. Atheism or Non-god religious beliefs still make a person a religionist. Don‘t try to think that because you don’t go to church or believe in the big guy in the sky that you are without religion.

The belief that no god exists is a belief. Atheists seem to think that a god-inclusive belief system is what makes a religion and that is absolutely wrong. Great you are an atheist, good for you, but you still are a religious person.

I say blaspheme all you want, but be aware that more often than not “blaspheme” tends to start leaning towards attacks against groups of people and I know you have reasons to not want the same treatment.

“the big guy in the sky”??? How quaint! I heard an interesting lecture on that, once. The speaker said:
“If you were to search every corner of the physical universe; every galaxy in existence; every black hole; behind every interstellar cloud of what-ever-it-is; If you had unlimited time and resources to do so, even traveling to that point in time and space where the universe first started to come into existence, you would NOT be able to find God! Why not? Because God is not a physical entity. Rather, God is a SPIRITUAL entity, existing in a spiritual dimension beyond human understanding and ability to conceive.”
Or words to that effect… Very impressive, I thought.

How can people blaspheme God? Those who deny his very existence blaspheme Him. “The fool hath said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1).

Whether you belive in your Creator or not, you can still blaspheme Him. Maybe not in yours eyes but certainly in His. Only people who have spiritual discernment can understand this. The Bible says His Word is foolishness to those who do not know Him.
