Hole-in-One? Incredible Video of Golfer Landing a 178 MPH Ball Inside a Moving Mercedes

A favorite for driving range junkies — aside from actually hitting the 300-yard marker with a golf ball — is to start pelting the ball collector when he makes his appearance in the caged vehicle. Nailing a moving target is a challenge and is sure to leave a dent, so you wouldn’t necessarily advise playing this game with a $200,000 car. Still, that’s just what Mercedes Benz and British pro golfer Jake Shepherd did — and the car’s exterior went unscathed.

Making this unique hole-in-one into a Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster set a new world record for furthest golf shot caught in a moving car – yes, there is a Guinness World Record for shooting a golf ball into a moving vehicle. The shot went about 275 meters.

Given that the ball was actually being aimed for the inside of the car and driver David Coulthard was trying to catch it (not with his hand, but rather have it land in the car), you can see that he took the precaution of wearing a helmet just in case the ball chose to land on him.

Check it out:

In this footage you can follow the ball in flight:

For those skeptics who may be thinking this could be a hoax, the official videos are hosted on the Mercedes Benz UK YouTube channel and Mercedes has formally announced the news on its website.

So, here’s your standardized test question of the day: If Shepherd hit the ball at 178 miles per hour, and Coulthard was driving at 120 miles per hour and the ball traveled a distance of 275 meters, about how far away might Coulthard have had to be to reach that speed in order to be in the proper location catch the ball? Note, this is a rhetorical question; don’t expect us to provide an answer for it.

Here Coulthard and Shepherd explain how they made it work:

    If this happened by chance I would have been impressed but the driver knew the direction, the speed, and could see it. All the golfer had to do was hit it in a straight line and all the driver had to do was place himself in that line and match the speed – swerve a little bit for correction.

    About how far away might Coulthard have had to be to reach that speed in order to be in the proper location catch the ball?

    Note: The question asks how far away from the golfer did the driver start. The proper location to catch the ball is irrelevant as it happens after the answer they are looking for which is “About how far away might Coulthard have had to be to reach that speed.”

    From video “The Catch – Single Shot”, you can see that the time from when the driver begins his approach (I realize he was slightly moving already, but it is the best data we have available as it is one single sequence with no editing to throw off the timing) to the time he passes the golfer is 10 seconds.

    Legend:
    v = velocity (m/s) (meters/second)
    t = time (s) (seconds)
    a = acceleration (m/s^2) (meters/second squared)
    x = displacement (m) (meters)

    Variable to solve for:
    displacement (x). This is the amount of distance the car traveled to reach the golfer.

    Equations Needed:
    v=at and x=1/2(a)(t^2)

    Variables Needed to solve for x:
    v,t,a

    Given:
    v = 120mph = 53.6448m/s This is the velocity at the time he passed the golfer.
    t = 10s This is the time it took for him from rest to pass the golfer.

    Proof:
    v =at
    53.6448m/s = a (10s)
    a = 5.36448m/s^2

    x =1/2(a)(t^2)
    x =1/2(5.36448m/s^2)(10s^2)
    x=1/2(5.36448m/s^2)(100ss)
    x=1/2(536.448m)
    x=268.224m = 880ft

    Answer:
    It took 880ft to get up to 120mph when he passed the golfer.

    Note, this is

      Having fun and the money to do it seems to make certain people mad. I could never afford the golf driver used let alone the car, ut I love people having fun and setting a record. It is too bad people look at thing with such a narrow and hateful view. Just my two cents or two pence wherever you are reading.

    I love David Coulthard. He‘s the best thing about BBC’s F1 coverage, especially now that Martin Brundle & Ted Kravitz are on SkyF1. Although, Eddie Jordan is always good for a laugh…

    Last time I checked, the hole on a golf course did not shift 2 feet to the left for the golfer to sink his shot like the Mercedes did.
    Not impressed.
